Brave was entertaining. Definitely lower tier Pixar though.

Lawless was entertaining but pacing was slow in parts. And some of the accents were terrible. Still a fun movie though. Tom Hardy is a badass

Re: Lincoln

I just can't get excited for biopics about infamous people. It was like the Thatcher movie from last year, I am sure I will enjoy myself (and the acting) if I go watch it ... but I never get that urge to spend 2 hours watching it.

there was a Lincoln biopic to be directed by Ringo Lam and starring Chow Yun Fat.  That I'd have liked to have seen

oh, I watched The Pact over the weekend after reading a decent review of it.

It's interesting.  It's a haunted house movie where the haunting isn't the most malevolent thing in the film, but unfortunately this is really the only bit of originality.  Well that and the whole "why the hell would I stay in this house if it's haunted?" attitude of the lead character.  It's worth a watch as it does some fairly interesting things with a few tropes that don't get aired out too much any more, but it's not really scary by any stretch.

It's on netflix, give it a whirl.

However, protest developed from the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Foundation, based in Washington, D.C., when they heard of the script. They believed that the script desecrates the life of Abraham Lincoln by inserting a fictional Chinese character into the story when no such figure existed in real life. They further complained that for a film about the life of Abraham Lincoln, the president's role is reduced to a secondary figure head, giving more attention to Chow Yun Fat's character.

I wonder if the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Foundation had any such troubles with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

just watched this depressing ass Japanese drama called Akunin (Villain).  A girl gets murdered and it's essentially about how the act destroys two or three families.  The  accused, the family of girl who was murdered.  Very good acting all around.  It's a bit melodramatic but not as bad as the Korean version would be.

Finally watched Drive Angry. This is a silly movie, but was ultimately a lot of fun. The special effects are uneven -- REALLY uneven -- throughout the movie. The police blockade and hydrogen tanker truck sequence was some of the worst CG I have seen in years. Fight scenes were a lot of fun, and the cars were badass. It would have been interesting to see Ed Harris try on the role of Milton, if they'd wanted to handle the same material just a bit more seriously. William Fichtner's Accountant character made the movie for me. Amber Heard looks like a cross between Scarlett Johannsen and Addison Rose, with the acting abilities of the latter.

If there's a sequel, I'll see it in the theaters; it was a fun ride which would have benefited from a silver screen.

Re-watched Batman Returns for the first time in years. There was a lovely blu-ray disc at the rental shop, and I couldn't resist. It was gorgeous; a couple people stopped by while it was running, and asked if it was the newest movie. It holds up pretty well; it feels very much like a Tim Burton film. The Penguin is a superbly designed character, visually, but the "main" plot of Schreck and Cobblepot's bid to take over the city is a poor foil against the Catwoman/Batman romance and examination of the duality in all humans. I understand that The Penguin is also dealing with some duality issues, but they're so muddled and pointless compared to the angst which drives Batman and Catwoman, they should have dropped that portion of Penguin's story theme. Keaton is, still, to my mind the best Bruce Wayne in the Batman movies.

so I just watched Beyond the Black Rainbow.  I really wanted to like it but I found it horribly dull.  The aesthetics made for a great trailer but weren't interesting enough to carry an entire film.  Dialogue was completely prosaic and clashed hard with the films attempt at visual allegory.  And the ending....

spoiler (click to show/hide)
where, like Sunshine, the film is reduced to a dull slasher.  Unlike Sunshine the rest of the movie isn't anything to write home about either.

Its a modern day age B movie classic in my opinion. Its not perfect, but its not as contrived and forced as some movies that pose as B movies.

Saw Skyfall a few days ago.

Visually striking and well done. Thank you to whoever decided to keep practical effects in the movie. The cg what little there was of it was just awful. The scene in Turkey on the rooftops was just badly done. The scenes in the later part of the film were most beautiful. It reminded me of the bond from yore.

Now about them characters:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I thought the introduction to the new "team" was well done and all of the characters fit. You've got the minister, you have a black money-penny, and a obnoxious q that's always teasing 007 with his intellect.

I thought that Haviar Bardem's character was well done and spot on but I think I was expecting more out of this villain. His fight was too centrally focused on M and not the surrounding damage he could inflict on the world around her. And in the end his person vendetta was his undoing.

I was very suspicious of the minister's character especially during the shoot out in the parliament. His character was not defined until he was sitting at the desk at the end.
[close]

Some random thoughts:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Title sequence sucked ass, thank you for using some real women and not cg everywhere. But it was just awful, and no I don't want to see my bond in the opening credits.

Lack of using that beautiful Island set piece for nothing more than a few minutes, what a waste of potential.

Another thing, was it just me or did it feel like the grounds keeper of Skyfall should have been played by the man himself, Sir Sean Connery? It's like the made that roll for him, but he didn't want to participate. It would have been so cool to have him killing the bad guy at the end of it all. Like everything has come full circle, it would have been nice to maybe explain the grooming process for the double 0's.
[close]

Thank god it wasn't another Quantum of Solace, that's all I asked for going into the movie. And I got exactly that!

watched a documentary on Dario Argento which was kind of interesting.  Typical hagiography which barely touched on his relationship with Daria Nicolodi but there was a fairly revealing moment with Asia Argento when she said "it was always interesting to me how many times my father has killed my mother in movies, but never me.  he's even killed my sister a few times, but never me.  he's only had me raped and beaten.  i try to not think too much about why that is."

Wreck It, Ralph
Very fun movie.  Made my random game knowledge seem applicable to something. yay

Skyfall
Gorgeously shot and really fun.  The theater loved Javier Bardem in this.  I loved the simplicity of it all.

Red Dawn
Surprisingly fun.  The action was also pretty entertaining.  Nothing mindblowing but I was honestly expecting a clusterfuck of a movie and it was actually decent.

Lincoln
I really liked it.  I think it kinda fails as a biopic but it actually succeeds at being a political drama.  For people who aren't interested in politics it actually breaks down how doing the right thing can be really difficult politically and why.  I loved the slippery slope scene as it really draws out the logical jumps that are needed when you're dissecting political maneuvers.  There were a few scenes that really shined when it came to humanizing Lincoln and not making him this larger than life character, but for the most part anything regarding Lincoln's personal life is the fluff that you were probably expecting from Spielberg.  All in all I thought it was entertaining and worth seeing but not for the parts that most people would expect.  DDL is a lock for best actor IMO.

Finally saw Disney's Tangled. What a gorgeous film; parts of it looked like a Maxfield Parrish painting sprung to life. I'm a sap for Menken musicals as well, so hey. Tomorrow I'll re-watch it in English to appreciate it more fully, but it seemed a fairly biting criticism of overprotective monster parents' effect on those they raise. It was super fun.

Actually, I guess it didn't much comment on that... Rapunzel was naïve but not unbalanced or schizophrenic, so scratch that. It was still fun.

I was dreading Red Dawn but it turned out good. People bitched about the ending but I liked it more than the original's ending. Thor made it awesome, and I think it did a much better job showing the resistance than the original.

Even as Spike Lee continues shooting on his Oldboy remake, another Korean film from director Chan-wook Park is receiving the English-language treatment. The production company behind this year’s critically acclaimed movies The Master and Killing Them Softly has announced a remake of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance A.K.A. Lady Vengeance.

The original was the final installment in Chan-wook’s Vengeance trilogy, which included Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Oldboy (2003).

The Americanized Lady Vengeance will star Charlize Theron (Mad Mad: Fury Road) in the lead role, with Charlize also handling producer duties. The original film wove a complex tale about a woman serving a prison term for a crime she didn’t commit, who later gets out and seeks revenge on those who did her wrong.

The English version is being penned by William Monahan of The Departed and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For fame. In the past, Monahan’s name has been attached to a remake of the Korean hit The Chaser as well. Stay tuned to Cityonfire.com for further updates on these anticipated remakes.

Watched the Wonderboys and holy shit TDKR was a fucking mess, Bane sounds like a seriously whisky'd camp Scottish uncle after watching one too many Connery Bond films, using an iPhone 5 app. Maybe that one made by the black man, um, he has dreadlocks Max Condition or Harmony maybe is his name.

Anyway Inception was a better film my candied Drive fixated.

Jeremy Brett only seems to have the acting capability of a twelve year old child with severe autism. It helps that he has young facial features.
