I can't imagine it being worse than Superman Returns.  The cast at least guarantees that much.

Amy Adams :-[

The cast of Superman Returns had no problems. Frank Langella was a great Perry White, Lois was just fine, Cyclops was good as her husband... and Routh did a fine job as Christopher Reeves as Superman. I think Routh did an even better Superman in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, as that's the kind of casually arrogant character I picture Superman could actually be. My point is, it wasn't a problem with the cast, it was the director trying to remake a 1980s Donner film.
I can't really remember a single person outside of Kevin Spacey.  I remember Routh was in it because people keep sying his name, but not much else.  I had to google who was Lois and the other characters.

But I remember the cast of Superman: The Movie just fine, despite not even being born when it first came out.

Superman: The Movie and II did set an impossibly high bar for superhero movie casts.  Terence Stamp and Gene Hackman?  :noah

FWIW, two friends who went to a Superman screening on Tuesday loved it and said that most of the audience felt the same.

They both also thought that it was way better than Iron Man 3,

Reviewers and Nolantards were probably pissed it wasn't ultra serious "lets rank this above The Godfather on IMDB like TDK cause legitimizes comic book nerds" realistic shit. If its all action I'm happy.
Or maybe because it's a Zach Snyder movie and he really isn't good at much besides making things look slick :yeshrug

Also reviewers loved the Avengers, and that was all cheesy comic book fun.

I've heard that The Avengers is a very fun popcorn summer blockbuster. There's always a film like that in the summer, that becomes a hit with audiences and critics (Spider-Man 1 & 2, Iron Man 1, The Dark Knight, etc). There are also plenty of blockbusters that get average reviews yet still become hits with audiences; The Amazing Spider-Man comes to mind.

I have a feeling Man Of Steel is going to be a blockbuster that gets shitty reviews but a decent to good reaction among audiences. Similar to the recent GI Joe, POTC2, or Clash of the Titans. The problem is that Man of Steel's budget is pretty big, and the marketing budget is huge. It's going to need legs, and bad reviews could fuck that.

I'd imagine the metacritic ratings for the FF films are in the 60s so it's a good comparison. I'll probably never "get it" but people LOVE those movies.

Actually it's the opposite, critics that disliked Superman complained that the film is too dark and gritty.

A silly complaint, imo, since many of those same people complained that Superman and his stories are too clean and perfect.

I think  it's refreshing to see Superman evolve with the times.

Nearly 800m worldwide, it did quite well.

I guess I was focusing on the American numbers, since those are the critics we're focusing on.  It seems like the American audience wasn't very happy with it.  Worldwide, it was quite a drop from SM3 as well, even with 3D and huge new markets opening up in the intervening years.

The drop was to be expected as such a quick reboot, and even with a new cast it was only off by what, 100m?

SM3 got pretty bad reviews and still made bank. Man of Steel could do well, especially considering it doesn't really have any major competition on the horizon; didn't Shrek and POTC2 come out shortly after SM3 back in 2007? MoS has the summer to itself unless I'm forgetting something.

Personally I can't stand Superman and don't see why anyone would want to see this movie  :yeshrug

Not a far off comparison.  Batman is one of Burton's best.  Man of Steel is one of Snyder's best.  Of course, there are only like five good movies between them.

Honestly, I don't really care too much about the approach they take with Superman as a character.  Gritty reboot, Avengers-style popcorn movie, or Speed Racer earnest goofiness would all be fine by me.  You know, as long as they do a good job.  I'm just not married to any particular version of Supes.

I went from not planning to see it when Snyder was announced as director to anticipating it once I saw Superman punching guys into buildings.  It's almost definitely not going to live up to the trailer, but it could still be fun.  The question is how far does it fall short?  Like standard action movie that looks better when you make it a 90-second action montage, or are we talking Triplets of Belleville here?

I remember talking to my finance professor about Persepolis, after a class. She was raving about the film, going on and on about how amazing it was; I hadn't seen it at the time. A slacker dude in the class shook his head and said "it had nice art but was pretty boring for a cartoon." Maximum rustle over-occurred.

I watched that Halo 4 movie on Netflix

surprisingly not bad. a little cheap in some areas but they hide it will.

I liked the fact that they make the Covenant out to be fucking scary strong and overwhelming. TBH Master Chief showing up was the low point because they had to have all these "hero moments" throughout. Was kinda cheesy.

But yeah, enjoyable if you're into the Halo mythos.

I did wish the dinner scene was about half as long. I get it, these other couples are Celine and Jesse at different points in life. But why all the talky talky pretentiousness? It takes away from the talky talky Jesse and Celine action that we love so much.

But perhaps the most arresting memory that they take away from being on set with living legend Judi Dench is not her boundless fascination with acting but her penchant for subversive needlework. Her work certainly did not resemble the delicately stitched roses of a Mrs. Bennet. "She makes these like needlework embroideries on set in the tedium of filming", says MacFadyen, "but they are all: 'You Are a Cunt'. And she gives them as presents. And it's Dame Judi Dench. And she is doing this beautifully, intricate, ornate (work). You kind of see the work materializing as the shoot goes on. Like: 'You Are a Fucking Shit.' Knightley never received her embroidered cushion from Dench but remarks: "I love that! She gives this fantastic air. She just sits there and she embroiders and you think: 'Oh, that's so nice! It's Judi Dench. It's so quaint; she's embroidering a cushion,' and you go: 'What are you embroidering?' And (it says): 'Fuck!' Apparently she's got hundreds of them just covered in swear words or rude sayings."

Spider-Man's a special case.  As long as Sony keeps making Spider-Man movies at regular intervals, their license from Marvel is pretty much forever.  So come hell or high water, there will be Spider-Man movies.  Ditto Fox and the X-Men.

Well, Fox did just let Daredevil slip back to Marvel/Disney, and the same will probably happen to Fantastic Four at this rate. Fox sucks at actually getting movies made.
