I watched the second Fantastic Four movie and thought the Silver Surfer was pretty great. Only because Doug Jones is quality.

Silver Surfer turned out looking and sounding good. He was a lot more badass than a dude covered in chrome riding around on a flying surf board had any right to be. Shame about the rest of the movie though.

Before Midnight

 :rejoice :rejoice :rejoice
 :fbm

Shit happens, people argue sometimes. Life goes on and we sometimes stay together. I think they'll be ok.

I did wish the dinner scene was about half as long. I get it, these other couples are Celine and Jesse at different points in life. But why all the talky talky pretentiousness? It takes away from the talky talky Jesse and Celine action that we love so much.

Can't wait for the next one in another nine years!

Watching the Before movies is like deja vu. Almost difficult at times. I am continually amazed how well they do Celine and Jesse in these movies. The dialogue felt real before but it's almost uncomfortable here like I'm watching something private.

Celine still has it, fat ass or not.

You can tell that they REALLY miss Pixar.

Disney's CG movies had been trending upwards. Chicken Little was terrible, Meet the Robinsons was pretty bad, Bolt was okay, Tangled was great, Wreck-it Ralph was excellent. Now there's this thing, I dunno. The synopsis makes it seem like the snowman is a minor character, so maybe this is just some crap the interns whipped up over the weekend.

this is somewhat unexpected
The New Yorker gave WWZ a good review?

http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/cinema/2013/07/01/130701crci_cinema_denby

Quote
“World War Z” is the most gratifying action spectacle in years, and one reason for its success is that Pitt doesn’t play a superhero. Gerry Lane is tough and infinitely resourceful (he could reset his own broken arm if he had to), but he doesn’t fly, he doesn’t pass through walls, and, in the long tradition of unpretentious movie heroes, he’s reluctant and terse. Early in the film, the Under-Secretary-General of the U.N. (Fana Mokoena), who seems to be one of the most powerful men left alive, tells Gerry that entire cities have fallen to the creatures, and he is the only one who can save the planet. So Gerry sets off in search of the first victim in order to find the cause of the outbreak—whatever it is—and then a cure. As he flies around the world, the audience is pulled slowly but ineluctably into the horror. At an American military post in South Korea, the soldiers know exactly what they’re dealing with. They call the creatures Zekes, and they would rather be shot than become one of them. The sequence is forbiddingly dark, rain-soaked, terror-streaked—a fleeting nightmare that recaps the pace and the charge of the Philadelphia scenes. You can admire a movie like Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion” (2011), a realistic rendering of civil breakdown caused by a spreading pathogen, but the horror-film version of disaster in “World War Z” stretches the senses to take in more than you may expect. Pop dynamism can tear through normal expectations when the fantastic is as precise as this.

Movie hopped with friends today:

Monsters University might be up there as one of my favorite Pixar movies.

I expected way more zombie wave hordes from World War Z, but its still a good movie.

This is the End was actually funny. If you hate the main cast, I doubt it'll be enjoyable for you.

loved This is the End.  Every second with Micheal Cera was gold, Neapolitan ice cream, good shit.

The East is almost a pretty good movie, kind of falls apart in the end, the main character just sorts of gets pushed around.  Its like a really good first draft of a better film.

Renting movies like a mad freak:

Quartet: Very touching movie about creative people in their later years; beautifully shot. Billy Connolly was awesome, but the main actor, Tom Courtenay, was flawless in a very nuanced performance. I'm going to look up his back catalog.

Killing Them Softly: Disappointing, to be honest. It felt like it was trying to be more clever than it was with the savings-and-loan scandal playing on every background device. There was absolutely no-one to pull for in the movie; it was just a bunch of losers in a two hour tragedy. I'm happy I saw it, it was not a bad movie, but my hopes were too high.

Reservoir Dogs: Hadn't seen it in at least 10 years. Holds up super well. Amazing how little Tarantino's signature moves have changed.

Jackie Chan retrospective fired up yesterday at Lincoln Center

Drunken Master 2 is still as near a perfect kung fu film as you could imagine, and is a hell of a lot of fun on the big screen.

Tuesday it's the Project A films for me then Thursday it's Police Story.

Then this weekend is the start of the NYAFF

Going to be spending a lot of time in the dark ths coming week

Tonight it's the Armour of God series which is fun, but I have too much other stuff to do so I can't go.

Tickets still avail for Project A and the Police Story films on Thursday.  If you haven't seen the uncut / undubbed Police Story 3, I highly recommend it.

Pretty solid. Got a little repetitive at times, but I was surprised how much Spielberg managed to get out of so little. Amazing how little wind-up there was to Spielberg's career. He was excellent right out of the gate.

My aunt went out and saw Duel when it was in theaters; a few days later, she panicked when she thought she was being followed by a truck right up behind her, tailgating dangerously close. Turns out her trunk had popped open and was filling the entirety of her rear-view mirror.

lords of salem

was alright i guess, enjoyed the part where the author had tea with the witches.  never really get to see the fruition of the rise of the antichrist which was disappointing.  other good parts were with the old timey witches who were very convincing,  wonder where they got the lead old witch lady from, she looks torn up.
