Thor was mostly boring, except some of the outerspace parts at least looked interesting. Everything that happened on Earth was just...whatever.

if you're lucky Jackie Chan's latest film Chinese Zodiac is playing theatrically near you somewhere in America, and hoo boy, I want to applaud Jackie for putting it all out there.  If you're wondering, just how thrilling can a 59-year-old action star be, this is the answer, this is the best possible answer to that question.

Its a fitting, for good and bad, exemplar of Jackie Chan's career, that its coming so late in his career is unexpected, but wholly welcome.  It fits comfortably along side his 80's and 90's classics like the Armour of God (Operation Condor) series, if not in complete excellence, then at least in spirit.  The plot is a nearly incomprehensible mishmash of melodrama, dream logic, and earnest Chinese patriotism, thank god.  The humor is as constant as the action, and just as enthusiastic, if not as well delivered.  The film as a whole is as eager to please as a newborn puppy, and about as smart.

This may sound like I'm ragging on the film, but I'm not, really.  Its a fun, joyous film that contains a lot a great stunts, good enough jokes, and pretty decent fights.  Its unfair of us to expect Jackie Chan to hit the same highs he hit decades ago, I'm not even going to harp on the guy for the obvious wirework and occasional CGI trickery.  The only thing that matters is this, is the film entertaining.  Oh yeah it is.  Quality cinema?  Not exactly, but who needs a traditional barometer of quality when you've got a rollerblade suit in your opening scene.

Grade: Chinese Zodiac about measures up to Jackie's Who Am I, and is even nuttier.

and speaking of trying too hard, its clear that Robert Rodriguez ain't trying hard enough with Machete Kills, a film that made me feel bad.  I mean, its not wholly terrible, but its a low-achiving, low-aiming grubby little comedy that looks crappy, features more boring exposition then zingers, and wastes the efforts of a considerably stacked cast.  Why the hell even bring Cuba Gooding Jr. to the party if you're not going to give him anything to do, and I can repeat that critcisicm with at least half of the cast here.

a movie about multiple personality having terrorists and sudden excursions into a 70's era James Bond plot should never be this boring.  At this point I'm wondering if RR even has it in him to do Sin City 2 justice, as that particular morsel was the last film from him that felt lively.

Got around to seeing Kill List

Uh, it was definitely well made and I'm all for leaving ambiguous stuff in to promote thinking and discussion, but after reading a bunch of internet articles on theories and interviews with the director it seems more a case of making a competent movie that doesn't really tell a decent story and the director hides the ball to make it seem like there's something there when there really isn't.  The only theories that kiiiind of work
spoiler (click to show/hide)
antichrist initiation, dream, subconcious fantasy
[close]
still don't entirely work when you take all the parts of the film together and even if they did work, they're kind of dumb so I'd rather the film be about something a little more high-brow.  I read a few that said it was political commentary on London's involvement in Iraq but not being from London and not really keeping up with their politics, can't really relate.

It's definitely no Lynch film.

I thought it was rather clear cut

spoiler (click to show/hide)
He was being tested for initiation, not necessarily as antichrist but as their leader. There must have been two kill lists as well, considering all his victims recognized him and were quite happy to play a role in the ceremony. They wanted to know whether his break down in Kiev was a one time thing, or a character trait. Needless to say he quickly proved that he was more than capable of the savagery they were looking for.

I'm not too sure guys, some of the comments I've just quoted are objectively thick as fuck.

Jon Ronson and Alex Jones actually have an awesome history together.

Eric, have you seen the hollow? If you haven't, don't bother, as it's shit. It's actually ok until they drop the ball maybe 3/4 of the way through, which in my mind should actually be a trope.
We need a horror film where there's basically no reveal, and it has a bit with Jason Statham fighting dudes in a moving train, and there's no bgm while It happens.

That's the thing.

Caves freak people out. Are they a welcoming womb, or just a place to die horribly in. It's always the dark, you carve unimaginably horrible shit out of it, using your brain. Which is like a cheaper, and yet more affective version of cgi.

Hey Eric, have you seen yellowbrickroad? I keep wanting to watch that movie, but then I see the overwhelmingly negative reviews and I decide not to. I guess I should just pull the trigger, but there's always something else to watch. I've avoided spoiling myself on it, just in case I do decided to watch it sometime.

went and saw Creature From The Black Lagoon in 3D today.  It holds up really quite well, especially if you think of it as a Lovecraft pastiche.  Group of scientists find a fossil that couldn't exist in the Amazon and go to find more like it.  Instead they find a creature which can't be killed and has an alien intelligence that reaches out to the humans in failed attempts to communicate until they injure him causing him to defend his turf.
There's a few things which could make it creepier, but the story is solid for what is essentially a science fiction b-picture.

The underwater photography is very good, which is important as most of the action takes place underwater.

the 3D effects are very very good.  I was honestly somewhat impressed with the framing and composition of the shots.  There were shots of schools of fish which were quite wonderful at showing the depth of field.

I had watched the film before, but I had never really seen it until today.

Studio Ghibli night, by children's fiat.
Spirited Away
The Borrowers/Arrietty
Il Porco Rosso

The Borrowers adaptation is fairly under appreciated, I feel. It's got some pacing issues, but is otherwise impressive in scope, design, character... lovely.

Spirited Away, I actually am more a fan of the world than the story, which just doesn't click for me. The character design is wonderful though, and I can watch this movie again and again.

Kurenai no Buta is just great, amazing, 100% Ghibli magic. I don't know why it's not as beloved by most as Laputa or Nausicaa. It has all the Ghibli-brand vehicles, characters, landscapes, believable and charming locales -- it's superb.

watching a Mexican horror film Alucarda and it starts off horribly and I have no idea why this is on so many "must see" lists but at about 20 minutes the two girls have sold their souls to satan and are involved in a satanic orgy and shit just goes nuts from there until the titular Alucarda is tearing up a convent Carrie style turning people to fire with the power of Satan.  It's not a great movie but I'm glad to have watched it.

Oh SHIT this is almost as good as the DoFP trailer news! And it's ALSO Singer related!

http://www.slashfilm.com/trick-r-treat-2-announced/

Quote
It’s funny because when I first dreamt up the idea of making the first film, I thought, “How neat would it be if we made them a series?” I’m a firm believer that October should be filled with Halloween movies, or horror movies. That’s something I remember from childhood. Horror movies and Halloween, they go hand-in-hand. And so the idea was, “Well we could probably do a Trick ‘r Treat movie every year or every other year, and that it would sort of just be a new batch of stories and characters. And the common link between all of them would be Sam.” Initially that was the plan, and then things changed as the first film had a very delayed, strange journey. I put those dreams on hold for a little while, so it feels good to go back to that initial plan. … I think it’d be great to make it a trilogy, at least. So fingers crossed. For me, I think every film should explore a different aspect of Halloween. I felt like the first film was the very traditional, suburban Halloween that we all have some memory of. But as I’ve grown up over the years, I’ve lived everywhere from Columbus, Ohio to New York to L.A., and I find that the holiday is very different depending on where you live. Or even time periods. I don’t see why we should be limited to just present day stories. Halloween is an amazing holiday because it evolves depending on where you live and the time period.

Quote
There’s nothing I can reveal yet. It’s still really early in the process, but I can definitely say that we’ll be exploring Sam more and maybe getting into some back story of who and what he actually is.

Quote
I think we’ll shake it up a little bit. There are different archetypes I’d like to explore, different types of monsters. We covered werewolves, vampires, and zombies, but there’s a whole slew of different creatures out there that we haven’t tackled, and I think Sam would probably be pretty good buddies with. So I think it’s time to let them have their time in the sun.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING!

THANK YOU BASED DOUGHERTY

Saw the Loner Anger, for quite a long film, not an awful lot actually happens, I thought Tonto was actually ok, and the guy who played the hero was likeable enough, but the setpieces felt actually empty and not that good considering Verbinskis strong past record.
It felt muddled, like everyone was stirring the broth with too many cocks.

Rented Pacific Rim in 3D. 3D effects and sound were top notch. The movie was about a half hour too long. The whole Kaiju(sp?) black market segment was dumb and should have been cut. Another thing is that I can't take Charlie Day as a serious actor much less a fucking scientist.

I'm done with trailers, I don't know about you guys but theres a right way to preview a movie and a wrong way. And this trailer is the latter, showing way too much of the movies potential plot points. The idea is to tease the viewers not give them the whole fucking story in 2 minutes.

What I did see looked good, but I question how much is future and how much is set in the past. I also think the clash between styles between future and past are a bit too much visually.

Not gonna worry too much about trailers.  Man of Steel has a fantastic trailer.

Either way it's at least got a shot at being fun.  It's from Bryan Singer, who made X2, but on the other hand it's from Bryan Singer, who made Superman Returns...

you think? it looks like it's going to be two short movies back to back.  X-men 4 and First Class 2, with Wolverine connecting the two.  I don't see it going back and forth.

problem with this trailer is that little of the action is ready to be shown and it's got some overused (but great) music. and that scene with people shooting wolverine.

The trailer doesn't reveal really anything other then here is the set-up and characters involved. It doesn't even really say why Wolverine is going back(other than vague things). Hell is that Magneto's new brotherhood? Is he going to betray Xavier? What happen in the future? Is this going to split the timelines? Plenty of stuff to un-spoilerd.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with Rahx.

Also, the trailer was awesome, but there were some obvious weak points. Biggest being the incredibly abrupt cut to Wolverine screaming at the halfway point, did they cut out the first full second or something? Sounded terrible and jarring. Also, the "We need you to hope again" was incredibly cheesy, not a good line to end the trailer on IMO.

But maybe... Xavier was talking to the audience, they could use hope after X3.

I hope the explanation for Professor X being back is "who cares"
Isn't it already?

I mean saying he has a twin brother who happens to look just like him and was brain dead is already pretty dumb.

Speaking of which, is Cyclops in this movie?
:pacspit
His actor was spotted in Montreal while the movie was shooting, so maybe.

12 Years a Slave

Yeah, that was quite good.  The score by Hans Zimmer is wowow, as are the performances by Ejiofor, Fassbander, Dano, Cumberbatch.  It sets itself apart from other slavery/plantation-life movies by focusing on the kidnapping angle and how it affected his whole experience.  Reading up on the true story, the movie seems really close to memoir Northup wrote about his experiences.  Doesn't seem overly embellished.  Definitely worth a watch and it sticks with you afterwards.

Also, I need a really need a good horror movie recommendation for halloween.  Like scariest movie you've ever seen.  I heard the new Chucky movie is good, but is it scary?  Normally I'd rather have a good horror movie than a scary one, but for halloween, something spooky and creepy is best.

I really like POTC 1 & 2, not sure what happened with POTC 3 and Lone Ranger. At least Rango was pretty good, so maybe Verbinski isn't completely out of mojo.
The sword fight in that large wheel thing (?) was the best bit.

Mind transferred to his twin comatose brother, was hinted at earlier in the movie.

His actor was spotted in Montreal while the movie was shooting, so maybe.

I predict he'll be back in the future timeline once it's "fixed", along with Jean, at the very end of the movie. (Famke Janssen was in The Wolverine.) Dude followed Singer to Supes Returns, Singer won't leave his character high and dry.

Anguish - GREAT little horror film from the 80s.  It's a commentary on the audience as participant with horror and features one of my button terrors of eyeball obsession.  Shit's pretty gross at the start but it weirdly calms down as it goes along until you get to the final scenes of the film and it goes for broke.  All killer no filler at an hour and a half long and it is better if you go into it not knowing a thing about it.

Evil Dead remake.  I unexpectedly didn't hate it.  crazy over the top while also taking it totally straight faced for the most part.  is a good horror remake which subverts expectations.
