I never particularly cared for Ringu.  I really really really like Hideo Nakata's Don't Look Up though and it's a damn shame that it was never officially released in any format in America.  I happened to catch it on the IFC Channel years and years and years ago and have not seen it since.

I think Super is a great film, well put together and well acted all around.  Excessively dark without being GRIMDARK.

Last night I watched what probably counts as a forgotten gem.  The Silent Partner (1978) is a fairly good neo-noir wherein Elliot Gould plays a bored bank teller who finds out that someone is going to rob his bank.  He has the idea of robbing it first so that the robber gets the blame while Gould gets the money.  The robber finds out and then it's a battle of the wits to see who gets the money.  There's a few scenes which don't work well (including one incredibly violent scene that just looks really quite fake) but the great amount of footage at a Toronto mall in the late 70s is pretty fascinating.  Lots of 70s nudity.  Good acting and a remarkably straight forward story about a good man making bad decisions out of greed and apathy really cement this film

Paranoia

This was a pretty fun movie. I love watching cheesy tech thrillers like this. As on one hand it's dumb as hell and on the other I love the glossy unrealistic looks.
Liam Hemsworth works at a tech company owned by Gary Oldman him and his team fail a pitch and get fired. Hemsworth gets rehired by Oldman to become his mole at a rival company owned by Harrison "dialing in my performance" Ford so he can steal a new product his working on, Harrison used to be Oldman's mentor but they'd had a falling out.

Amber Heard is also in it her and Hemsworth meet in a club, eyes lock and she dances seductively while there is a lot of space around her, they don't even talk he just starts dancing with her. It then cuts to the following morning in her bedroom, She kicks him out. A while later in the movie he goes for an interview for Fords company guess who's also there as one of his directors of marketing?  Only in a movie does that kind of stuff happen. :lol

I thought it was alright certainly a OK way to spend a lazy Sunday. Me and the wifey turned it into a say the cliche watch

I saw a trailer for that, and it gave away more than your summary, which felt rather complete. It was one of those "Thanks! Now I don't have to even see this movie!" trailers.

Like I was discussing with Patel/Treesong earlier the movie, as dumb as it was, was much, much more enjoyable than any of the Nolan BATMENS.  Better action, better visual design, gleefully dumb in parts, Amy Adams and that girl that plays Faora.

If you can read a comic for the art, you can watch a comic movie for the set design & action.

I guess that makes Nolan's "realistic" Batmans the cinematic equivalent of tracing.  :lenowned

True but at least he looks like Superman.

For superhero movies, miscast actors are even more annoying than bad acting.

I never watched the Tudors but wasn't Cavill supposed to be decent in it?  Maybe they just didn't give him a chance to show his chops.

I find it funny that fans give credit to Bales for his deep, mumbling Batman voice and then the much cheaper voice actor in the Arkham games sounds almost exactly the same.

It's hard to tell if it's the writing or his acting (it's both).  Other fine actors like Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Christopher Meloni have clumsy dumb moments.  But Cavill's semi-awkward American accent doesn't help.

This would be my exact review.  It's definitely one of those twisty crime movies where you don't want to go back and look too hard at logic of the characters' choices, but it's a fun watch regardless.

I really dug Trance.  Yeah, I suppose its a minor work, but man, there's all sorts of kickarse, next-level directorial shit (that opening heist, that omg ending setpiece).  Even if all the elements don't quite cohere (I suspect all of Boyle's direction to McAvoy was "act just like Ewan McGregor would, just not as well"), its still a wickedly entertaining, highly accomplished thriller.

watched the single movie in two parts White House Olympus Has Fallen Down, I think I less disliked the Gerald Butler half, which at least wasn't an action movie in air quotes, and had lots of violence.  It had the courage of its deeply stupid, hackneyed convictions.

2 Guns, it's almost an insta-classic from the 1980's.

Yep! I kept thinking if this movie had came out in the 80's, it would be considered an instant classic. People always look at 80's movies and say, "Why can't the make movies like that anymore?" Well, it's because everyone is a douche nowadays, ready to pick apart something, forgetting how to enjoy themselves.

Could you imagine if "The Goonies" had came out in this era?! My god, that movie would get destroyed by these so-called critics today.

Errn Man 3

S'aight. Not as great as the first one, but not as bad as the second one. Ben Kingsley was great for the 10 minutes that he was in it. Having a superhero with PTSD seems kind of a weird move for a mainstream superhero movie; not that they really did anything with it other than have RDJ run around in circles every so often. Overall the plot was pretty dumb, why did he spend half the movie repairing the one Iron Man suit if he had 40 more back at his house? It undermines a lot of the earlier tension with him being without the suit. It's a comic book movie tho, and RDJ was still good and the action was pretty decent, so I'll give it a pass.

Took my kids to Frozen. It's better then the trailers suggest but not as good as Tangled (which I found kind of uneven).

The first 30 minutes has terrible pacing and you feel like you are watching a bad Broadway adaptation. But the action kicks in and it becomes an enjoyable typical Disney movie.

Three or four good laughs and maybe one good song.

The animated short beforehand is nice to look at, but too spastic to make you laugh.

Sleepwalk with Me - Good little movie.  Some pretty funny bits throughout.  Now I wanna check out one of the Mike Birbiglia stand ups.

The Curse of Chunky - As the first Chucky movie I ever watched, was ok.  The movie was fucking creepy until Chucky himself started moving and walking around with CG animation and then it was just kind of lolz walking maniac doll.  The movie had like no story and was kind of pointless until the last 15-20 mins and the ending was eh.  I heard this was quite good, so I gave it a shot, but other than being creepy for the first half, it was kind of a waste of time imo.

Stark is a messed up dude in the comic, constantly battling his alcoholism. I feel like there were a few to many beats devoted to PTSD, made to coincide with the whole Agents of SHIELD thing -- or maybe it was Shane Black just loving having psycho, broken, tragic heroes in the lead. If Black can't even get away from wintertime snow falling shots, he probably really has a hard time leaving broken heroes behind.

Watched two docs on Netflix last night.

Stuck - about what a nightmare the (international) adoption process can be. It was okay.

Burn - follows the lives of some Detroit Firemen. Excellent. It really gives you a sense of the city and the difficulties it faces. Wonderfully shot, with some amazing moments of cinematography.

The whole thing is on YouTube:

Also watched the anniversary recital of Les Miserables Dream Cast thing. I'll spare you that one, because it put me in an even worse mood.

It's a terrific awful movie. And unlike most awful b movies, it keeps up its pace. How they didn't make sequels to this kind of blows my mind.

Someone has the full movie up on youtube.

Amazing Spider-Man 2/Rise of Electro poster.  It's spoilerly so it's in a spoiler box but it's a poster meant to be seen in theater lobbies so I don't know.

Looks like a big stupid dumb mess  :omg  Happy they're going for broke before studios find another type of movie to latch onto.

I liked the first one far more than I expected, so I'll probably see this.

That's pretty cool that they got Emperor Palpatine as the villain in this one.

Actually, that's Jamie Foxx, and the movie requires you to cheer him on, so say, "GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR"

Do you listen to the podcast "How Did This Get Made?" They did a great episode on that movie. I've never seen it, but still enjoyed them riffing on it.

When I was a dumb kid, I really liked that film.  It contained enough weirdness to keep my interested even though I knew it was horrible.

How Did This Get Made is some great listening but the constant ad breaks are really starting to get to me.  I'm a huge fan of The Flophouse though and highly recommend it to anyone who "likes" bad movies and or whatever the equivalent to a riff k-hole would be

I was in a mood, and watched the 2011 production of Stephen Sondheim's Company, with NPH, Stephen Colbert, and Jon Cryer. It was great!

My wife is a gigantic Sondheim fangirl, I should probably watch that with her...

Sleepwalk with Me - Good little movie.  Some pretty funny bits throughout.  Now I wanna check out one of the Mike Birbiglia stand ups.

Check out the This American Life episode that the movie is based on.
