Saw The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug last night...

I'm so fucking torn.  It was a good movie in its own right.  But you can really see in this one where they're stretching themselves thin for 3 movies.  Though I honestly believe if you're not familiar with the book it won't bother you or you won't care.  But so much of it is so unnecessary and they skip over things in the book that they actually could have expanded upon for just completely made up portions of the story.  It got a great reaction from the crowd though.  Smaug was really, really well done.  His voice, the animation, his design.  Incredible.  They brought him to life better than I could have imagined.  The pacing is uneven.  But it's PJ so is anyone surprised?  But even with that everything is extremely well done and interesting.  If you liked the first Hobbit you'll like this one.  Oh and the ending is a cliff hanger cock tease of epic fucking proportions.  If I didn't know what happened in the book I'd be fucking pissed.  I couldn't believe where they ended the movie.  No resolution whatsoever for any of the story arcs.

So in short:

+Gorgeous movie
+Smaug is fucking incredible
+Nerd porn through and through
+Fun adventure
+Bombur is more than a joke in this one and redeems himself

-Uneven pacing
-Cliff hanger/awkward ending
-Rapes the fuck out of the book

Since I'm sure someone will ask. Here are some spoilers...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
They go through so much effort to shoehorn in a really unnecessary love story.  That's probably the most offensive part of all the added shit.  And they end the movie with Smaug flying to Lake Town.  But this is after a thirty minute chase through Erebor where they run in circles and eventually cover Smaug with melted gold and really do nothing.  It's a pointless chase, but it's pretty to look at.

on Sunday we watched Zoolander at the Film Society of Lincoln Center which featured a Q&A w/ Ben Stiller.  I'd never seen it with an audience and it was just amazing to experience in a giant theater full of Zoolander fans

The Wolverine

This is... not a good movie. It's not a horrible movie, but I felt sad for some of the stuff in it which just felt out of place. There were a mess of weird gunfights in the movie, which was presaged by seeing a lot of guys openly carrying submachine guns outside a temple in Tokyo. Yeah, I know I'm complaining about realism in a movie about a guy who can regenerate himself, and pops claws out of his hands. It was just oddly jarring to see so much stuff done right, and still get so many big things wrong. There's a lot of stuff that just doesn't make sense; on the run, Wolverine gets them to a discreet location to hide, and then they just decide to go to her home and not-hide, which was what they said they wouldn't do. There are lots of things like that; Mariko barely escapes being bulleted to death, and she says "I can take care of myself from here" at a crowded train station. Wat? Has she missed the creepy characters who have been following them and shooting at them the whole time? Is she bulletproof, secretly?

I didn't like the Venom or Viper, or whatever the other mutant was supposed to be. The woman playing Mariko does a fair job, but she is cursed with writing which has her character acting in a self-contradicting manner. Yukio is pretty awesome, both as a character and just as a presence. My son really liked her; he thought she was the best character in the movie. Hugh Jackman has got Wolverine down pat, and I don't think I can get tired of seeing him in the role, but I hope the next installment is smarter.

Overall, it was better than the 2nd half of the other X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, but still not a good movie in itself. Meh?

Open Grave - a thriller / mystery / horror film from the director of Apollo 18.  Wait! Come Back!  This is actually pretty good.  It's so close to being excellent, but a few things keep it from going into "unabashedly recommended" territory.

The logline is fairly simple and intriguing; "A man wakes up in the wilderness, in a pit full of dead bodies, with no memory and must determine if the murderer is one of the strangers who rescued him, or if he himself is the killer."

This very basic premise goes in several unexpected directions as the mystery of who these people are and what is happening is slowly revealed across the running time of the film.  The film does kind of get bogged down towards the end when you're just waiting for the genre conventions to catch up to the cast, but the previous hour and fifteen minutes are very well structured marred only by some flat b-movie acting (including Erin Richards who looks like a poor man's Naomi Watts mixed with a poor man's Nicole Kidman in this film, it's quite odd).  The ending is nicely fatalistic but it pulls back at the last minute which kind of annoyed me.

It's a Chrysler commercial for space exploration.  The 15 seconds from the movie makes it look like a reboot of the astronaut farmer yet it's more captivating than most trailers.

still mulling over Inside Lleywn Davis and I want to see it again.  I'm still mulling over scenes from the film and going back through the structure to make sense of certain actions.  I expected it to be similar to A Serious Man tonally but it was far funnier than that.  the cinematography in this is just top notch.  great shots, great lighting and some of the sound (not the music) just adds this delicious texture to the whole proceedings.

still amazed over it.

Rise was way better than I thought it would be, given the history of the franchise past the very first movie. Lots of credit goes to Andy Serkis on that one, too, his performance as Caesar really helped pull it all together.

Kick-Ass 2

Yeah, that was pretty bad.  It's like one of those sequels you don't talk about like Batman Returns or X3.  The first movie was so good.  It was a great story that mixed real world superheros with the actual archetypes of superhero comics, had good character development, and the action was comic and pretty darn awesome.  This has...none of that.  I'd heard the comic sequel was really bad even before filming began on this one, and yep, the story sucks and is shallow, doesn't have much to say, and the direction weak with boring action and none of the style or charisma that the original had.  Hit-Girl is the only saving grace of the film, but even her arc sucks and is just a stupid arc to waste a movie on.

I'd say the only positive thing about it is that it doesn't kill the franchise.  It wraps up all the connections to the franchise (in sort of a MGS4 terribly forced way), so at this point they're free to do whatever they want, and that really can only help the series if they ever decide to do another one.  I think a Hit-Girl spin-off could probably be pretty decent.  The problem with Hit-Girl vs. Kick-Ass is that Hit-Girl can actually fight and defend herself, so it makes her fun to watch whereas Kick-Ass sucks and just gets the crap beat out of him most of the time and it's not really enjoyable though maybe he'd be a lot better by the next one if there's a time skip.

Still probably worth watching only because the first movie was that good, that you want to see more of these characters.  But definitely, and unfortunately, not a good movie.

Rogue, last we saw, wasn't even mutant any longer. And she was always pretty poorly used, despite a competent acting job. Weird that she's in the preview, but has been cut. They're going to have to do a lot to get DOFP to be coherent for non-comic fans.

MPAA handed down a rating on Robocop.

PG-13

Enjoy your shitburger Total Recall-esque remake, Middle America.  :clap

Amazing, considering the original first received an X-Rating for violence. Well, technically, it failed to qualify for an R-Rating, and they could self-elect to take an X-Rating.

Spike Jonze wrote and directed.  It is partly as you described, except the movie presents the central relationship as no less intimate than a living one.  The way it pulls this off is a large part of what makes it great.

That was fun.  Not as fun as, say, Chan-Wook's Thirst, but still quirky, light dark (I swear he's one of the only directors who can pull off dark subject matter in a fun way; I attribute it to the quirky unrealistic narratives he creates that you just gotta role with and enjoy), gorgeously shot and a total love letter to Hitchcock.  It's not an amazing film, and a lot of people probably won't like it due to the unrealistic nature of how everything plays out and the actions of the characters, but it's still a neat coming of age story that's a lot of fun to watch just like Chan-Wook's other films.  Would recommend.

Vin Diesel basically has ZERO charisma on screen. Riddick has some awesome things about it:Dredd looking seriously gay, everything about it look wise; but VD is just boring.

Much of the film consists of weird video game and Disney tropes, blended in with his obviously HUGE lack of irony. Which in a way, makes Riddick even more amazing.

The action bits were shit too.
