Of course it is. It was crafted by a superior Nippon artist, not some lame-brained gaijin writer trying to appeal to base Western tastes. :smug

Apparently, Edge of Tomorrow is really good:

I saw it at the Toronto premier last Thursday (Cruise made an appearance before the screening). I loved it. It was surprisingly funny.

Maidentrip

A documentary following the journey of 14-year-old, maybe-Dutch, maybe-New Zealander, maybe Neptune's own brood, Laura Dekker. Born on a boat, and spent the first five years of her life sailing, this film follows her attempt to become the world's youngest person to circumnavigate the earth alone in a boat. Gorgeous film, well paced, and inspiring.

Much of the film is shot by Laura on her boat, and on land with assistance by a film crew. Laura's not rushing around; she visits many ports on her journey, meets a number of interesting characters, and sees many overwhelmingly gorgeous sights. On the water, we see a number of unbelievably beautiful vistas, sunrises, sunsets, and an unfortunate set of storms.

It was an interesting set of mental gymnastics for me. I was worried for her throughout, and also cheering her on. I couldn't let my daughter try something like this, even if she was interested in doing it. Laura's father has raised one of the most independent and singular characters I've ever seen.

I'm interested for several reasons. One is that George Lucas is out. Two is that the people they've lined up to take over do actually have some talent relative to the positions they're tackling. Three is that Star Wars generally has a pretty cool universe.

And Abrams wants to do lots of practical effects where possible, so I'm totally down for that.

"This shit again" ???

What shit? The prequels were bad because they were objectively poorly made by a hack director. This movie has an entirely different creative team behind it. Hardly the same shit.

Also, Nintards love everything Nintendo puts out. Nobody likes the prequel trilogy.

poor Abrams, forced against his will to spend $185 million making a terrible Star Trek movie

let's review JJ Abrams' filmography

Alias: The Arrow of the 00's
Lost: :gurl
M:I III: most famous for that scene where Tom Cruise washes windows in Dubai
Cloverfield: remember Cloverfield? exactly
Star Trek: this is okay I guess
Fringe: Fringe was pretty good for 1.5 seasons, too bad it ran for 5
Super 8: if you are nostalgic for 80s Spielberg movies, this is like a bad cover version
Star Trek Into Darkness: let's remake Khan only he's white and we don't tell anyone he's Khan (but he's Khan)
Almost Human: it's the future and robots are black and everyone uses Bitcoin (CANCELLED)
Believe: (CANCELLED)

oh wow what a superb track record, Star Trek VII is in GREAT hands, simply the greatest!

1) Star Trek 1 showed he CAN direct a fun action-scifi movie
2) He's not George Lucas

Add "in the last 30 years" and you get a true statement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Kasdan#Filmography

He's written a NUMBER of stinkers.

Meanwhile, Brackett is a serious, genre-defining SF author with serious Hollywood bonafides, able to provide both the SF grounding and the romantic/tragic sweep that makes Empire such a classic.

I predict a solid C movie.
