The Interview is basically a modern day Farrelly bros movie, where they had a couple of gags they thought would be hilarious and they had to make a movie around them.  Strangely that movie was about assassinating a real life dictator.

Having the white guy be the most fervent and violent of the group was a nice touch and I liked that they only really pointed it out once and iirc it was to insult him.

Exodus - wow this was boring

Hobbit battle of the five armies - easily the worst of all 6 ME movies. Felt so unnecessary.

I liked both of the other two movies more than BFM.

I mean, BFM had some pretty cool battle scenes, but...that's all it was for nearly three hours.

You thought AUJ was better?
A lot better. I felt like the pacing wasn't so frantic and sloppy and it seemed more like an adventure. The five armies felt like a mishmash of tones. I was mostly bored in it. I also liked DoS quite a bit

Selma is so fucking good.  Great acting, great directing and it works to show dispel the "great man of history" interpretation of the past by allowing other actors and systems to show the work which they had done to get to the point where Selma could even be a possibility.  Some beautiful shots, but the DP did kind of blow out some scenes which was unfortunate.

the parallels in the first half of the film and 2014 are very powerful

edit: the actor they got to portray Malcolm X was uncanny

The worst part about Journey to the West adaptations is that the book is my favorite book but no one can seemed assed to do a decent adaptation of it that isn't rife with bullshit. The only exception I can think of is the original Dragon Ball and that's just a loose reinterpretation. I have no idea what the point of turning Journey to the West into a rom com considering the original source material is already fucking hilarious in that it has a talking monkey that fucks up heaven and gets drunk on all the deva's and bodhisattva's wine. Who would wants to watch a rom com featuring two nobodies and not a monkey who raises an army of apes? Not me. I just don't get it. Holy shit. :(

Gone Girl and Nightcrawler are probably my top two for the year.

my head says GG is better all around, but Nightcrawler is just so frigging fun.  Yeah, I was expecting Gone Girl to be great, no shit Sherlock, a good Fincher film, well I never.  But Nightcrawler knocked me on my ass and kept surprising me delightfully all the way through.  Its great stuff.

Speaking of Jake, watched Enemy and liked it even though I was definitely WTFing at the ending shot.  Thinking about it and reading theories, it makes sense and is a pretty good Lynch-esque story, but:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm a little bummed that the theory that it's just 1 guy fighting the internal struggle with his cheater self is basically it.  While watching it, once they did the "we have the same scar" thing I was hoping it'd be more of a Twilight Zone sci-fi short story of two versions of a person that stemmed from a choice (stay or leave) branching into alternate dimensions who by some odd event exist in the same world and then forces of the universe work themselves out and bring them back to one by the end and one takes the place of the other.

Although the first hit that comes up on google is a critics' theory about how the film is Invasion of the Body Snatchers about a Spider-race taking over mankind without them knowing it.  Kind of neat how the same movie can have that as one theory and a realistic subconscious battle as the other.   heh.

I was digging the first half of The Guest, but I think I was kind of let down by the second half.  I was very into the mystery and really dug the acting, but then when it shifted into second gear it feels like it comes out of nowhere.  It's still entertaining, but it's not really what I had hoped for

edit: I didn't like it nearly as much as I did You're Next.  More mumblecore horror, less mumblecore action films.

Clerks II was great, everything after that though :kobeyuck

Clerks II was like 1/10th as clever and funny as Clerks 1 or Clerks The Animated Series.  It wasn't awful, but it wasn't nearly on the same level as his Clerks/Mallrats/Chasing Amy writing.

Saw Birdman.  I can appreciate the craft that went into it but it kind of ultimately left me cold.  I think the best thing about it was nerd reaction to the trailer before it was released and the breathless speculation about how it was going to be an arty superhero movie.

Why is 70s exploitation film so rape-y?  Saw Don't Deliver Us From Evil as it was playing at a small DIY theater and I liked it.  It's about two girls who say "fuck the police" and become Satanists in their small French town which means just being mischievous until they accidentally kill a man and then must suffer the consequences.

I liked it, but it felt difficult to enjoy; which I guess is the point, right?

Honeymoon - this small scale horror film is worth your time if you like small scale horror films.  Good psychological / relationship horror mystery with an excellent final act as everything clicks into place.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones - trash? i dunno.  i hated the camera pov character for this film.  I did like the whole "let's go shoot the shit out of some witches" scenes and the "hey i have super powers" scenes.  horrible final act that ties it into the rest of the PA mythology.  More like miss-ology, amirite?!  ha ha it's terrible.

Inherent Vice is awesome filmmaking, but people will probably hate it because they're stupid and can't just sit back and appreciate a glorious mess in the hands of a master filmmaker. Don't be a fucking wanker, go see this movie and if you hate it, just know that in 10 years you probably won't. Probably gonna see it again soon.

My son was excited to see a few moves Jackie Chan pulled off in The Karate Kid remake, so I rented Armor of God and enjoyed it again for the first time in over a decade. I’d forgotten that the opening scene was the one in which he nearly was killed due to the breaking branch on that tree. Yikes! Also, ‘80s shoulder pads in full effect, and the boozy, sexy Satanist drug cult was more awesome than I remembered. Were any of the amazon kung-fu chicks in the cave actually dudes? They had killer shoulder and back muscles.
