Blair Witch Project mainly plays on simple fears in a incredibly efficient fashion. Being stuck in the woods combined with a spooky backstory, with really demented shit happening later in the movie, its all cohesive and works.

Cloverfield felt like a overly melodramatic, overly serious Godzilla movie from the perspective of street people. Nothing can be done to make that work for as a movie. Maybe if the main characters constantly flew or fled to multiple cities and the monster comes after them constantly.

Cloverfield was good except for the love triangle, general dialog writing, and the ending. The rest was highly enjoyable, but those parts dragged it down. I liked the movie overall, but only very tepidly and was never really clamoring for a sequel.

The most interesting parts of Cloverfield for me were the very small quick flashes of horror that they did nothing with. That scene/s where their friend gets quarrantined and we see something burst out of her? That shit doesn't go anywhere. I want more of that. Horrific shit happening to young pretty people. Not just buildings fall and infastructure failing them.

Cloverfield was fun the first time, but doesn't hold up to multiple watches and any scrutiny.

Maybe not that new or unique but it was one of the few moments in cinema I can remember thinking "I wasn't expecting this and it's fucking rad!"

That was another good one! I mean this is a very real threat to unarmed humans. You have a giant monster destroying your city but on a street level you have these dog sized monsters in the dark who may also be inefecting people. They do as little as they can with it.

Watched The Martian - Which was great.  Expected an oscar-bait film about a guy surviving on Mars.  Plus I think Ridley Scott is old, crazy and sucks these days.  Turned out to be incredibly entertaining with a sharp script and just top of the line performances from every single person.  Even Donald Glover was awesome.  Great movie.

Then watched M. Night's The Visit after hearing it was actually good.  Kind of conflicted.  On one hand it was a great mix of creepy, tense and silly, so it did a good job with the atmosphere.  It was also funny and decent writing.  But then I didn't like the twist and the aftermath.

What was a silly film ends with kids killing crazy old people, tonally it just felt off and unsatisfying.

The end just felt kind of stupid like all of his twists after Unbreakable.  I gave up on M. Night at Signs, I'll go back to not bothering with his stuff after this one.

Watched The Social Network.  I know that it's just a movie, and liberties are taken left and right, and everyone has an agenda, but it sure makes Zuckerberg look like a dickball.  Just in Timberlake also was nice to see in a rule that made him look like an opportunist scumbag.  Great cinematography and a fantastic soundtrack, but the script was so overly dense that it was a little hard to follow at times. I bet that the actors loved it.

I also watched Grosse Pointe Blank again. Man I love that movie. Great soundtrack of all my favorite high school music, considering I graduated in 1985: a year earlier than Martin. Minnie Driver was so sexy in it.  I kind of wish that John Wick and been made as a Grosse Pointe Blank sequel.

Suicide Squad will likely be total shit but it's already gotten me sooooooo much entertainment via the Mega64 podcast. For real.

What's even better is that six months before Leto was announced as the Joker, they made an Arkham Knight spoof where Bruce Wayne was so broke he couldn't go to a 30 Seconds to Mars concert. :lol :lol

I dunno, didn't Heath Ledger hermit down in a hotel room for a month or two for The Dark Knight, climbing walls looking for 'inspiration' probably not for the betterment of his mental health? Not saying it's something to admire, just that (I think) it happened.

Problem with those Leto quotes is that they needed a douche-chill trigger warning.

I think it's actually a great film by an hit and miss director (Girl with the Dragon Tatoo was total garbage, it's partly up to the source material, apparently but not only). Does it matter that it is truthful to the real personal story of Zuckerberg ? I'm not certain it is. I found the movie pretty clever in how it stages all those forms of socializations and the characters compelling.

You're correct, of course, that as a movie it is arguable that capital-T "Truth"  (if such a thing can even be said to exist) is a secondary value to the quality of the film as a whole. I also enjoyed the juxtaposition of various social connections and activities over the course of the film.

It was also good to finally understand why people were excited about Armie Hammer. I'd only seen him in The Lone Ranger previously, and seeing actually act was entertaining.

It depends. Sometimes there's more of a meme/jokefest thing happening and other times it's more of an external, internal and story monologue that are all aware of each other and separate personalities/perspectives. Really depends on the writer. There's pretty much never any fourth wall though.

My older sister really wants to see it and she's the last person I'd ever expect for that, so the marketing must be working.

I'm excited since I've heard the script was amazing ever since it leaked years and years ago. And Reynolds does seem enthusiastic which is nice.

Some parts seemed pretty clever and some seemed groanworthy. So it's pretty accurate for Deadpool.

I love love love the suit, and the action looks pretty awesome (actually making use of the R-rating, unlike The Wolverine.) Could go either way but I'm pretty positive on the whole thing.

I think the majority of superhero movies are okay and good at best, but Suicide Squad actually looks a lot more entertaining than a lot of stuff in the past few years.

Looks incredibly tacky and gaudy, but that seems purposeful. Its nice to see the tackiness and cheese of comic books applied to movies wholeheartedly.

I kinda want this to be the secret best of the five* for some reason, the vibe in the two trailers is like perpendicular to everything else, except maybe Deadpool. And in Deadpool it's kinda inherent to the character, they didn't have to make a Suicide Squad film that embraced being nuts. The comic of SS has been all over the place over the years.

*Deadpool, BvS, Civil War, X-Men: Apocalypse, Suicide Squad...though I guess it's six now with Doctor Strange.

The tattoos are all still there, they don't stand out as much against all the colors on him just in general, he does look extra white in some shots though.

Also some of the shots in the trailers are from what I assume will be brief flashback origin stories. You could see Deadshot's family in the first one, they released a still of Harley at Arkham as a doctor talking to The Joker, there's a brief shot of the "old" her in this one, etc. (EDIT: Also Enchantress going through the caves in the first trailer. Either that or they accidentally spliced in clips of a secret Tomb Raider movie.)

The shot of The Joker lifting her out of the pool, might be something like her getting his chemical bath too with him jumping after her. Maybe?

I've liked the music they've used for both trailers, they've been kinda working that perpendicular vibe I noted with those instead of EPIC ORCHESTRA. Song from the first trailer (obviously they used a different version):

Yeah that Suicide Squad trailer looked good. Other then some cool looking shit, it looks like actual adult fun. Fun, but not losing that sense of gritty that the DC film verse has taken up. Which I guess kind of makes SvB look bad because it always looks extremely self serious.

Also, I think Deadpool looks annoying as fuck.

Margin Call was a pretty uplifting and heartwarming film about the self-correcting nature of markets. Fit in well with The Quants which I finished reading the other day.

Disappointed in lack of smashed monitor count that was in the book though.

EDIT: Also, I can see why Spock decided to switch over to Starfleet academia. (Hard not to hear his Spock "matter-of-fact voice" sometimes in this role.)

I think DC's output thus far has been terrible (not taking Nolan Batman into account). And the new Batman vs. Superman movie looks like a successor in terribleness that was George Clooney's Batman.

But Suicide Squad looks like a fun, goofy movie. GotG was also that, but what this has that Guardians doesn't have and vice versa is more grounded characters or more relatable characters. Besides that, GotG has more of an adventure feel, while Suicide Squad looks more grimy and nasty.

I think Suicide Squad could be a diamond in the middle of a lot of shit.

I would think the Guardians of the Galaxy fanbase would have more interest in sci-fi aspects of that franchise.

This seems more like the ol' war movie with a messed up ensemble behind enemy lines. Like Tropic Thunder and Battlefield: Bad Company (r.i.p. in peace) parodied.

GotG was close to being Star Wars' Galaxy Quest.

Sticking Batman and The Joker in this movie is really brilliant to rope people that are just Batman film fans in, especially being more than just a Nick Fury stops by to chat cameo. Assuming the film is good and then gets people to try less popular future ones. Like oh, I don't know, Cyborg's film.

I think after the initial introduction films D.C. would be better off thinking about doing team-up films than more individual ones like Marvel is doing before heading back to an Justice League/Avengers collective film. Especially to prop-up the lesser known characters by sticking Batman or Superman or The Flash along for the ride. Like the old Brave and the Bold comics, or Green Lantern/Green Arrow, or the Batman/Superman book, etc. Marvel's started to do this, but still under the banner of...well, under the banner of Captain America really is about it.

And I'm not saying this just because it seems the most plausible way to get a Blue Beetle/Booster Gold film.

I thought FOX should have salvaged their Fantastic Four franchise by attaching it at the hip with X-Men for a film or two rather than whatever the fuck that last film was supposed to be. There's enough crossovers to mine for that.

If Suicide Squad does well, then they could also use it as like a "team up" with The Teen Titans in order to launch that who probably nobody knows outside of Robin. (Another Batman bonus!) Just do it like both teams trying to accomplish the same goal, whatever it is like maybe fighting Deathstroke, only, you know, with slightly different methods.

Unfortunately from that Snyder interview he said they just figured out what to do with Justice League after BvS and nothing really beyond this first wave. Marvel's at least got that nutso 20 year plan (from Iron Man forward) to at least help tie all this stuff together better. The Avengers -> Civil War -> Infinity War -> Planet/World War Hulk. (Okay...that last one's just me.) Maybe Johns has a better idea of what they'll be doing after he gets his Cyborg movie.

I'm not so sure. I think it'll do well but not nearly as well as Avengers or Iron Man, and its performance will raise questions of whether a successful multi film franchise can truly be spawned from it. Plenty of people legit like Transformers and think the films are awesome....not sure audiences will have that reaction here.

I'm kinda leaning towards BvS being so bad that word of mouth hurts it.

If by "bomb" people means grossing only 650+ millions like Man of Steel (which apparently was under what they expected) then it might or it might not.
I'm a bit lost with that fascination for the boxoffice race. We'll see how popular the film will be when it's there anyway, what's the rush apart from priding yourselves from your higher state of understanding of the mindless crowds  ???

Even if that happened, Warner would still do films based on DC characters, so really... does it matter that much ?
