Saw Jason Bourne today, after watching The Bourne Legacy (Renner) last night.

I don't see why Legacy got 53% or whatever on Rotten Tomatoes. It's a serviceable action movie with great action scenes and hits most of the right notes. I think everybody was willing to hate it because it wasn't one of the three awesome Bourne movies we previously enjoyed. There were plenty of plot holes, and nonsensical moments, but it was OK. It's not a Jason Bourne movie, but it's pretty close.

Jason Bourne manages to split the difference between the awesome Liman/Greengrass original three and the over-the-top action and occasional WTF moments of Legacy. The main themes of surveillance and privacy are reasonably well handled, but anyone with marginal technical awareness will be left with a gaping mouth at some of the casual technical errors made in the film.

Heather Lee, the CIA agent played by Alicia Vikander, is my new waifu.

There's one undeniable great point about the movie, and that is Julia Stiles.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nicky Parsons gets kakked in the opening scene, and we never, ever have to deal with Stiles' wooden line readings ever again in this series. I swear I rolled into the theater ready to see if she had grown as an actress, but I'd be willing to bet money that Damon actually tried to make his acting more wooden just so Stiles' didn't seem as horrible. She looks as though she's reading off of cue cards.

I still think Supremacy was the peak. It had a more even tone than the first, better action and a very strong emotional core. Great ending too.

speaking of French animation, I really very much enjoyed Phantom Boy, which tells a not hugely ambitious story but does so with high technical proficiency. The animation style is slightly spare, but its also very distinctive, colorful, and expressive (dat hand drawn art). Its an adventure film for families in a classic sense, as in its not dumbed down for kids even though its main character is a 10-ish or so boy. That boy can perform astral projection out of his very sick body, he meets a stymied and recently injured cop in the hospital, together they work to crack a case that involves a spunky reporter, a spiteful megalomaniac, oafish goons, and a surprisingly effective lap dog. Its also sort of a thriller, at least kind of a low key one. And I'm pretty much an easy mark for any well done genre film that does its business in 90 minutes minus. So I liked this a lot, and if April and the Extraordinary World hadn't already come out this would be my easy pick for animated film of the year, such is life, to have too many good movies to choose from.

Suicide Squad is the comedy of the year. They didn't pull all of the funny moments into the trailers. I laughed hard when Quetzlcoatl appeared. I laughed hard when Katana told her sword that she'll be together with it in death. I laughed when Scott Eastwood sacrificed himself.

I wish the mid-credits scene was like 20 minutes long and in the movie proper. For some reason I feel like I want 20 minutes of Viola Davis as Waller and Affleck as Wayne innuendo sparing.

There should really just be 45 minutes of Davis as Waller since she's obviously the best casting decision by far it's almost embarrassing.

She's a great Amanda Waller. Like spot on. Almost everyone else is forgettable. Will Smith/Deadshot was pretty good. He's pretty much the heart of the film. Those two are the best: Waller and Deadshot.

The Joker was shit. The problem with him is that he's supposed to be a main villain, not a bit character. He's barely in the film.

I rank BvS above this. As shitty as BvS was, it at least had the warehouse fight. Suicide Squad has nothing. It's boring and I was getting impatient. I just wanted the movie to end halfway into it.

Leto said there's like an hour of material that was cut and he has no idea what The Joker was doing after we first see him and when we later see him but he shot other stuff. And that was Ayer's cut, not Warner's.

Maybe they should stop making these ungodly long movies (Snyder's BvS first cut was four hours) and then it won't feel chopped to shreds when Warner's fits it into a theatre.

Or they can keep doing this and then releasing Ultimate Editions, I'm more than fine just waiting on those and never seeing the theatrical mess.

Maybe they should stab Snyder in the throat with a rusty spoon, throw him down the stairs, wrap him up in a rug, and toss him into a Zimbabwean river.

There's parts in the trailers where Joker's face in half-burned. Apparently that's not even in the final film.

I know it's not DC's fault. DC has great stories. They have great comics. They have great cartoons.

The problem is WB. There needs to be a DC Studios like there's a semi-autonomous Marvel Studios. I've been saying this shit forever.

Yeah yeah, Geoff Johns is "in charge" now or whatever. And even though I think Infinite Crisis is the best Crisis, he needs to fucking reboot this shit already.

Keep Batfleck and Davis, jettison everything fucking else into the goddamn sun (including Snyder.) Fuck.

Well, even then, this Joker really isn't memorable. He doesn't do anything to stand out from the other film Jokers except wanting Common to cuckold him.

There was that one Joker scene in the trailers where his hair is messed up and he has like a bomb or gun with him and he's wearing a tux: that's not in the movie. The scenes with those guys wearing panda suits and masks: those last for last then a few seconds.

Warner's policy seems like it's just "here's a hundred million, do whatever, see you in a year" and then they "fix it" into incoherent garbage. (On that Superman Lives documentary it sounds like that was even their policy way back then.)

Snyder had the Ultimate Edition written into his contract after they renegotiated for doing the broader DC Universe films after he was done with Man of Steel. So he's not entirely dumb. He probably did the four hour cut because he knew they would give him so many notes it would hopefully save more stuff.

In twenty years he'll release the note that said "cut all this boring Clark Kent stuff, Batman is the ticket" from BvS, and Ayer can release his "you know, we could use less Joker antics" note too.

I'm not sure that Warner totally knows who they want to make these movies for either. Or how tightly to adhere to the properties or this particular vision of them. Dense*, dark, realistic. But yet they have to at some point welcome widespread superpowers (not just Superman) and galactic events (just to bring the Green Lantern Corps in) and the New Gods lore (Steppenwolf, Mother Boxes, eventually Darkseid) into this all without pulling down the whole accessibility apparatus. They can't easily leap from the currently built universe to how Marvel has handled and will handle Thanos (a mcguffin leading to a big space fight, with quips galore) regarding Darkseid's unnamed but established status as a God.

*In theory. BvS chews a lot of ideas about superheroes/gods in the "real world" (arguably far better than Civil War...from a purely "on paper" standpoint) even if the film can't get it together well enough to explore it. And probably art house filmmakers like Snyder and Goyer were the wrong ones to even attempt this. Especially with an insane Lex with daddy issues as the "voice" of the concept.

I guess they are just filming hours upon hours of scenes and then whittling it all down to two hours. Or Ayer had his vision of a darker Suicide Squad, but then Warner was like "White people it up" and made it more "fun" and "lighthearted"

Shame that some of my favorite moments in the trailer aren't in the film. I hate it when movies do that.

"Extended bar scene with Harley taking everyone's orders. Deadshot calls for a shot, Katana wants whiskey, Croc and Boomerang settle for beer, Harley asks Diablo wants and he prefers water which she jokes, "is a good idea." The scene was featured in the trailers, but in the movie it cuts directly to Deadshot's speech about them all almost pulling the mission off."

There's also that part where Flagg is going over the dossiers while Moon is looking at him and he says "Deadshot shoots people, Harley's crazy, Croc eats people, and you're possessed."

Would have loved this

Quote
"Early reports indicated more backstory for Killer Croc, revealing that he entire life as a social outcast due to his physical appearancr and has convinced himself that he is beautiful in his own way. Croc crossed paths with Batman while working as muscle-for-hire for numerous Gotham's crime bosses, while secretly planning to take over one day. There were also scenes displaying his affinity for making sculptures out of discarded materials. Aside from jokes about Croc viewing himself as 'beautiful,' one of these were retained in the final cut."
Quote
"Also deleted was a scene where he becomes sick at the helicopter escort to Midway City, throws up half-digested pieces of goat, and then eats them again, disgusting the nearby Navy Seals."

But Croc is just there in the movie and ultimately does nothing.

Snyder is not art house. He's shithouse.

BvS does "real world superheroes" "better" than Civil War, because it's not something Civil War was ever concerned with. There's a light hint of it with the Sokovia Accords but that was an extension from Age of Ultron, and didn't even really factor into the overall plot much. BvS is so fucking pleased with itself it brangs on and on about the concept but then actively fails to do anything interesting with it.

Superman in front of a Senate commission? That's an interesting concept. And yet in BvS, Superman does not even say a single fucking word in the entire scene. It's all a setup for some stupid fucking shock moment that doesn't serve the plot in any way.

Fuck Zack Snyder.

It's not, Joker is totally husband material for Harley. Probably wouldn't even kill her because it'd be funny.

There's a reply on there that fixed a scene I thought was confusing, but reading it on the list didn't trigger anything. Harley has a long history of "snapping" free for a bit from Mr. J before returning, and if the scene IS moved to where it was supposed to be it with the way the post describes it completely changes it from her mourning her thought to be dead love to her being done with Mr. J's crap. (Until he comes back.) It also makes Mr. J into a big jerkass.

So they totally did fuck those characters arcs, no wonder Leto, especially, is complaining.

Snyder is not art house. He's shithouse.

"I remember everything." Oh, OK. Now you've got your memories back -- and then they play with the old Bourne Shaky Memory Kinda Mostly Returning effect used repeatedly when he was an amnesiac. There is so much they could do with a Bourne who has all his memories back, is trying to process what it means to be him, but they just have him doing boring hairshirt penance by doing streetfights for which he's overqualified.

I love how they couldn't let their villains/bad guys say racist/sexist things or hint at possibly of one being a rapist just to make him more unlikable.

Or that Joker and Harley are totes in love instead of, you know, Harley having a severe form of stockholm syndrome and unable to get out of an abusive relationship?

What a disaster. Even Batman: TAS had that kind of twisted relationship between them. :lol

batman tas introduced harley.

don't u understand narrative arcs, jeez. Obviously they started out in love, and the abuse began later. I fully expect this to be explored in Suicide Squad 3.

nah someone actually climbed into my mentions once because i was ranting abt how harley quinn's entire existence is problematic and the fact that they've been slowly kinda re-writing her to be more on her own/not joker dependent lately in the comics says it all.
