Watched Cloud Atlas.  It was pretty uneven, and I had trouble trying to figure out what artistic message siblings were giving with the use of the actors in different rooms. However, by the end of it I was enthralled and highly involved. I can't think of a better word movie to watch right now, with Donald Trump in preparation to drive out people who are different.

I love it but it's not for everyone. I rewatch it every year or so when I'm feeling really down. In fact it gets better on rewatches, you spot things and follow it better. Great soundtrack too.

I had the same reaction; lots of nice scenes that felt vaguely connected + the novelty of race switching held a moderate interest for the bulk of it, but the back quarter really pushed it into something else for me entirely.

I'm already planning a re-watch with my wife. I think she'll like it. I'm still working out why some characters were consistently bad (misguided), while others were switched between sympathetic and antagonistic roles.

The race switching was also a daring risk that doesn't entirely pay off. I felt seriously uncomfortable at the appearance of the first caucasian actor in prosthetics to remove his epicanthic fold, but oddly I calmed down when they put Keith David in the same thing. It moved from representational to a theatrical conceit, somehow ablating the racial baggage it carried for me.

Can either of you confirm whether or not Jupiter Ascending has worth or value?

No on Jupiter Ascending. Went and saw it with the wife. Lots could be said about it. I think the best way to sum it up is that when it sends the screen shows "Directed by the Wachowskis" It felt more like a "Here's the idiots responsible for this piece of shit." and less of a "ta-da!"

Cool, I'll avoid it. I could watch it just for Eddie Remayne, but I guess I'll just catch The Danish Girl on video and his second crossgendered part as the female lead in Rogue One next month.

HOW DARE YOU!

but yeah, Jupiter Ascending is traaaaaaash. Eddie Redmayne is laughable in it.
From time to time my wife will drop that awful, "But...I like dogs." line and we'll fall over laughing. Really a terrible movie. I'd rather watch Airplane vs Volcano again. Twice.

I also loved Cloud Atlas. Did you read the book beforehand? It made it much easier for me to understand the movie, even though the book is also written in a disjointed style.

Jupiter Ascending was very awful. I'm struggling to think of something nice to say about it.

I've got Mitchell's other big book in hardcover, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, but not Cloud Atlas. I've been thinking about remedying that.

I love how the armor is literally Mass Effect.

Had no idea what this was and surprised to find out that it's a long-running French sci-fi comic series that has been around since the 60's.  There's even a French/Japanese 'anime' version up on Crunchyroll.  Apparently the creator also has accused George Lucas of stealing a bunch of his stuff for Star Wars, including the designs for the Millennium Falcon and 'slave Leia'.
:leon

Hmm, don't know about this. I was never against the movie, but I don't think making it an origin story for her is really what I wanted.

I feel like they have already missed the point and made a safe " Ima living cyborg movie". Robocop basicly.

There's some parts of this trailer that are almost spot-on from some of the stuff seen in the anime, but if I wanted to watch that...I'd watch the anime.  It looks cheesy as fuck and once again I find it almost comical that most of the cast are caucasians.  I guess it's fine for Batou and if they go with the excuse that it's the major's prosthetic body that appears to be white...sure...but still.  Just...lol.  And that haircut.  :rofl

And damn it, fuck the bodysuit.  Where's the leather one piece? :drool

Ghost in the Shell looks like the cyberpunk movie I always wanted to see as a kid (but was repeatedly let down with crap like Johnny Mnemonic).

I feel like it's a property that's been cribbed so many times that it can actually feel kind of forced or cliched when you finally watch it. Kind of the same experience people had with LOTR and Mad Max.

First time I didn't watch the GitS trailer with the sound.
Welp at that origin angle they're seemingly playing up in the trailer. :doge
Guess it's somewhat novel compared to the source (or the other adaptations) but I'm not excited about that. None of the Shirow stuff is really great to be condensed in a couple of hours anyway, and even the first Oshii films suffered from cutting a lot of the unit dynamics out out of necessity.

Hope there will be insectoid tanks.

I'm kind of worried about Kruse's role in this story. Seems like a waste to use him and not do the Individual Eleven thing. What made him an interesting angle in 2nd Gig was not his small connection with the Major, but his fantastic depiction of a "Someone's enemy is another's Freedom Fighter".

Suicide Squad Extended Cut Scenes, until they're taken down, for an easy 12 minute version:

Apparently this version was the original cut, that the studio cut down even more, and so that long list of scenes that got posted after release aren't even included in this like all the Harley/Joker abusive relationship stuff. Tho the road scene is pretty neat.

Sounds like a trend at Warner. :lol

EDIT: Guess there's maybe more though I don't really remember what's actually new since like most of it was in the trailers: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4e_aUnhj6rq1WRFltAg5Kh1W5XZjrJOZ

Watched Harry Potter in the adaptation of Joe Hill's Horns. The physical effects are great. The CG ones, less so. The "big" reveal is obvious, and I wasn't liking the movie until I realized that the real mystery isn't the "who" so much as the "why," and it's on the wrong "who." So in the end, I liked it despite feeling kind of corny, kind of cheesy, and generally sad. Actually I appreciated all the sadness in it. Also, FANTASTIC song choices throughout the entire movie.

Fantastic Beasts is a lot of fun. I'd watch many more movies in this universe. No need to tie into Potter either, it's just an interesting setting / world that we've only gotten a narrow view of so far.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Farrell to Depp is a downgrade. I'm interesting in Grindlewald story, but not really in the way they're looking to tell it. Scamander, the Goldstein sisters and Kowalski are plenty compelling enough without a heavy handed "hey remember this bad dude from Harry Potter?" running around every movie.

Saw Fantastic Beasts. Kids didn't like it because the story was too convoluted. I thought it was good because of the supporting characters. It's actually a pretty funny movie. The CGI was a little uneven, but the set design was immaculate.

The reveal at the end was stupid.

Maybe some genius can break the movie into 3 parts and make it work. But if they try to cram it all into a 2hr 40 minute movie, it will fail.

because I'll Stan for the magnificently talented Naomi Watts, and apparently I have shitty taste in film, I saw Shut In today. Criminy, what a disaster. Its only strength being that it feints somewhat well towards what exactly sort of thriller it ends up being, that and of course the presence of its star, who is incapable of sucking, but has pretty much nothing to do in this barely coherent and ineffectual mishmash of suspense tropes. Worth your time only if you need a sleep aid. Also this film was a former Black List 'Winner', maybe those scripts really are best unmade.

Better yet is Mel Gibson's newest dose of ultra-violence, Hacksaw Ridge, which has gotta be the most rousing, kickass and gory film to ever celebrate pacifism. Gibson remains a facile peddler of spectacle, but holy crap, does he ever nail that whole thing with the spectacle. And the film's achingly sincere, even corn pone tone and characters ends up working in its favor, as the straightness and the squareness of the table setting first hour contrasts nicely with the gib-flying mayhem of the second half. There's some stuff about religious belief/parables and sticking to your principles and blah blah blah. Its just an underdog story with more exploding heads than the entirety of the Scanners franchise, with some spiritual window dressing, that's not really a bad thing though.

Even better still is Kelly Reichardt's dramatic anthology film set in rural Montana, Certain Women. Its a very poignant, humane, and understated film that successfully fights against every melodramatic impulse it might have (witness the most chill hostage standoff in film history). That's kind of a remarkable thing about this film, it that it finds great drama in mundane experiances, and the terseness of its characters can be so expressive. As a former small town guy myself, this film did a lot for me. There's a sense of lived in authenticity, of space and character. Everything just feels right. I very, very much liked this film.

I really enjoyed what is likely to be a polarizing film, upon thinking about it, its probably deliberately so. How else to take the opening scene, which is hugely confrontational, but has little if anything to do with the rest of the movie? I guess that's one of the things I liked about Nocturnal Animals, in that its a pretty loaded film, about relationships, revenge, and compromise, but its oblique as hell about any of the points it wants to make, or if its even making a point at all. Its a standard issue domestic melodrama about unhappy rich people, and its a grit-infused revenge thriller, and how its two halves interplay and collide off of each other is what keeps things interesting. Performances are uniformly strong, with a special nod towards a dyspeptic Micheal Shannon, who gives a shot of fun into a pretty dour flick.

Does Brad Pitt have some sort of World War II jones that was only ever obvious in retrospect, like how Rachel McAdams seems to be drawn to roles where her partner travels through time? Anyways, Allied is a solid enough if not spectacular WWII-set romantic thriller. Its old fashioned in its storytelling, hell it could be a remake of a Hitchcock movie, but with contemporary R-rated elements added. Robert Zemeckis, who has always been a meticulous craftsman, gives the whole suspense-thriller thing another try, and there's a few nifty set pieces along the way. But while the thriller half of things is fine, the dramatics don't land quite as well as they should, it is a stiff Brad Pitt, the overly familiar (or classical, if you will) plotting, or maybe its just bad timing? Seeing a good film in wide release for an adult audience is only easy to do from November to January (Oscar season), maybe I'd be a little less cool to this in between superhero films a few months back. Anyways, its fine, maybe even a bit better than that, but being the third best WWII film starring Brad Pitt doesn't sound like a great prize.

Rewatched the Gremlins movies last night. I watch the first pretty much every Christmas, but I hadn't seen The New Batch basically since I was a kid. This was a mistake. I don't know if this is a controversial opinion, but I think Gremlins 2 is the better of the two. It's pure, manic, unrestrained creativity. Maybe the best practical effects ever seen in a film.

I fucking love how little it gives a shit about its own lore. Weird meta humor all over the place, it's like an insane parody of the first film. Joe Dante just did not give a fuck and had the most fun possible with this movie. So good.

Darjeeling Limited: Coming to grips with death
Royal Tenenbaums: Reconnecting with your family
Moonrise Kingdom: Love story + coming of age story
Grand Budapest: Murder mystery adventure

Sure his stuff all deals with similar themes but directors usually have a hallmark. Anderson is no Woody Allen in this regard.
