The Matrix is overrated and super derivative imo, the Wachowskis havent really done anything showing outstanding talent. The property they were involved with I like most is probably Assassins, dunno how much they had to do with that.

:iface

The Matrix brought layered depth to a wire-fu SF movie. It questions politics, human existence, and the nature of perception vs. reality.
Speed Racer is the best live-action adaptation of an anime in history.
Bound is a tense, exciting crime film.
Cloud Atlas is engaging and thought provoking, but largely better intentioned than well-executed. Still, it took more chances than 99% of other Hollywood movies.

I'm not super-fond of V for Vendetta, and I'm torn at assessing just how badly they mangled the two Matrix sequels.

As for Assassins, der wiki says they tried to have their names removed from the screenplay after Donner's scribe re-wrote it, but the WGA refused them.

Never watched that movie because of how it took off, lol. Is it actually a good movie? I just kinda avoided it because of the whole 4chan ordeal.

It's worth seeing. It's got some good performances in it, and the political message is interesting. Plus: Hugo Weaving making kung-fu and stabbing fascists!

I wouldn't recommend V is for Vendetta either, I like small specific parts of it, but there isnt enough for me to ask people to give up time to watch it over the myriad of other amazing films.

i thought the underwater part in resurrection was pretty cool and sorta actually tense

tho watchin it on youtube it not as cool as i remember though it's the only time the CGI aliens look any good

although they do kill off like half the cast in just these five minutes by like only one alien which is kinda neat  :lol

i gotta admit i've probably watched resurrection more than the others because it'd always be on late at night with other sci-fi films of the late 90s like Event Horizon, Demolition Man, and stuff around like 2003-ish, though it was usually probably like a TNT version all chopped up and dubbed...I've seen Lethal Weapon 4 too many times because of this, Jet Li not speaking any English and beating the shit out of Riggs and Murdoch is pretty hott still probably

Re-watched the MCU Thor movies. The running theme is "Not enough screen time for this many talented actors." Hopkins and Hiddleston get their time, but Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Tadanobu Asano, and Stellan Skarsgaard don't really get their day in the sun. The latter two get a bit more time in the second movie, but then Eccleston is mostly trivialized as the main villain. I disliked the first movie so much that it took me three tries to get through it, but now I enjoy the character interaction between Thor's cadre of warriors, and the goofy humor that runs throughout. I wonder if the "Converge" holes warehouses was stolen from The Animatrix sequence where the kids were playing with the glitches, or if it's just happenstance.

Get Out

Great movie. I was expecting a bit of overhype on my way in, but it really deserved the glowing reviews and word of mouth.
It's just come up for purchase on iTunes, so I'll watch the moment it becomes rentable. That trailer for it is chilling.

I gotta give a hand to Amazon. They made, as in, fully produced the two best movies I've seen this month. Their formula seems to be to give an established filmmaker money and get out of their way, I'm cool with that.

The Wall is as Spartan as its title. Two soldiers (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and yes, that John Cena) in 2007 Iraq get injured, isolated, and pinned down by a sniper in an unknown location, and that's pretty much it. It has refreshingly little to say about the Iraq war, or even all that much about its characters (81 minutes long, I raise that as a selling point), its really only interested in being a performance piece and wringing as much suspense as possible from its scenario. In that respect its pretty successful. I'm a sucker for a well done, stripped down thriller, and The Wall is so near to the bone as to be anorexic.

Even better, and, well obviously much more ambitious is James Gray's very British The Lost City of Z. Its smart about how to make a movie about an exploring Englishman in still colonial times for a 2017 audience, also while making this avatar of imperialism a compelling and contradictory figure. Its about the real life Amazon explorer Percy Fawcett, but moreso its about a man's search for meaning, and obsessive quest for enlightenment while damning all consequences of its search. David Lean's ghost is probably digging it. Its a rich, sometimes thrilling, always deeply atmospheric film. Charlie Hunnam's career is probably going to take a major hit by the now but all assured failure of King Arthur. Hope he can bounce back because he's amazing here.

Seriously, go catch The Lost City of Z while you can. Theatrically (purrty jungles, natural lighting), its likely to be on my best of 2017 list when all is said and done.

Sam Raimi shot the fuck out of that thing. No big cgi finish, just one tired and bloody hero. Parker learning lessons the very very hard way.

First off you really have to watch all the prologues or you will be left not caring about most of the crew and this will work to your determent as much of the drama is very relationship oriented, plus they are really fucking cool prologues. If you wanted a thriller like Alien, dont bother, this isnt it, but imo that's a good thing. We're never ever going to have a tense thriller with an Alien stalking a crew, familiarity has stripped us of that, I used to hate Cameron for making Aliens an action movie but years later as the series evolved and I watched other series evolve, I sort of understood why, series - especially horror and thrillers - needs to change genres as they evolve, it's natural it's needed.

So Alien:Covenant is a sci fi adventure, go in expecting that and you'll be fine. Sadly it carried over some negatives from Prometheus - stupid fucking scientists doing stupid fucking things - but is also brings back the best part of Prometheus [redacted] turned up to 10. I'll spill below in the crackpot theory spoiler. This movie together with aliens has effectively moved the Alien franchise from being about this terrifying stalking Alien to be more about the cycle of creation and i love it. The visuals are spectacular, I'm going to pre-order the blu ray the second it comes out, there's some really fucking gross proto-aliens in here that makes my skin crawl when I think about them, also if you were expecting to learn much more about the Engineers forget it, they're background decorations and it's more about the cycle of creation and sentience as a concept. There's some stupid cliche horror deaths scenes in there, and you pretty much can 100% predict who's dying next and how as the movie makes it super obvious, apart from those complaints and the stupid scientists I wasn't taken out of the movie too much and enjoyed it. It's going to be a polarizing movie though, people have expectations of Alien movies I dont think can ever be fulfilled, it's shifted in genre now and it needed to.

I'll give it a 7.5/10, this may seem harsh but I tend to rate movies harsher than most, there's some deleted scenes and content cut and the theatrical cut has some things I feel could have been dropped to add in some of the prologue stuff so people arent lost to the relationships between the crew. I'll probably revise my score upwards with the directors cut.

CRACKPOT THEORY WITH SPOILERS
spoiler (click to show/hide)
So if you watched it you know David is still alive and is pretty much the antagonist of the series with Xenomorphs being his creation, I believe at the end when Walter confronted and tried to end David, David transferred his consciousness into Walter's body, it doesn't make sense time wise that he could have changed clothes, did his hair, burnt off his hand and make up for all the differences in the short time he has, why is this important? Over the last two movies there's been this AI called mother running the WY ships and I believe at the end of Awakening David is going to upload himself to mother and run WY as an AI for centuries, we know in the future still the WY company is obsessed with experimenting on and creating aliens just like David has shown, and Weiland and his daughter never showed much interest in, so WY has to shift into this somehow and this is how i see it. This also means that David has and is the antagonist in every.single.alien.movie.every with Aliens being his tool to experiment on and create superior new life as his father did.

We're way too familiar with the xenomorph for it still to work as a horror though, it would for new people, but for fans of the series, it would pretty much be Star Wars 7.
Quote
Scott really put it front and center, to the film's detriment IMO. He squandered a whole lot of the movie's running time with scenes that don't do anything but advance the themes he's going for and lack any real narrative purpose.
Agree with this, like i said the theatrical cut wasnt quite balanced right, hopefully he elevates it in the directors cut

When it first came out, I saw in theaters on the opening weekend. I was in the USA and I saw it with a bunch of friends who are also Alien fans. We were all remarkably disappointed. Mind-bogglingly disappointed.

I have seen it one more time since then, and didn't dislike it as much. It is beautiful. There is some quality acting happening. But people are stupid only because the plot requires it and that is pretty unforgivable.

Omg Covenant is fucking hilarious. It's even DUMBER than Prometheus, and all the characters except one are DUMBER than everyone in Prometheus, and she basically shits on how stupid the concept of the plot is about a half hour into the movie. Lmao. It's more entertaining, though, so there's that.

The flute scene was so (Image removed from quote.) holy shit I literally could not believe what I was seeing. And then Fassbender kissed himself.  :neogaf

When it was good (monster stuff, David/Walter stuff) it was really good. When it wasn't, it was like Ridley rewatched Prometheus and thought "I could make that dumber".

Hang on, they brought back the space flute ?  :neogaf :girlaff
Your opinion is pretty much what I expected out of the film (I decided to pass. Wife was dragged at it by a friend and had pretty much nothing to say about it which is damning).

Prometheus done right (including the space flute)  :nsfw

A Cure for Welness was a bit disappointing. Started out very good, atmosphere was OK too, but the story got very cliche"d and a bit too predictable.

Pride was a typical feel good UK movie in the veign of Sing Street or The Commitments, but with gay activism instead of music.

The Stuff was amazing classic trash. Also funny ànd with a message of sorts.
