:lol  I really think they could have done something cool freeing themselves from the book with the "surprise! sequel bitches!" they pulled but instead they were like "now we can just take the main character and some of the lore and make a YA movie!"

Well I just remembered what the happy ending from this movie reminded me of.  There's a scene in Kung Pow: Enter the Fist where
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the main character finds out everyone (except one dude) is actually alive after thinking they were dead and they all start to smile and dance.  At the end Roland is like "so your family is fucking dead and you've got nothing for you here.  Why don't you come with me?  I could use your help." and dons a big shit eating grin.  THAT'S WHAT IT FUCKING REMINDED ME OF

I actually bought and watched Shin Godzilla last night and watched it with a friend.  While the soundtrack was indeed incredible, I could not get over the  :doge looking cgi for Godzilla. His first form is so hilariously bizarre looking when he slides around with his big white eyes, it completely took us out of the movie, and my friend kept calling him "Tardzilla" for the rest of what we watched of the movie.

The concept of the various forms was interesting, but it's just really brought down by the cgi. I'm used to bad special effects, and I didnt mind the old classic Godzilla movies, but I think it's the mix of almost unfinished cgi looking going for the classic rubber look that really, REALLY turned me off.

Seriously..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHlbHer8r9g

I wasnt prepared for the endless scenes of meetings, I get that the movie is a critique of how the Japanese Gov handles crisis, but it honestly felt like 90% of the movie were meeting scenes. It was a bit too much.

I enjoyed the destruction, it really felt like Godzilla was super powerful and the destruction effects were really well made. The scale was amazing.

But yeah.. The CGI. I really tried.

At least the cover is pretty badass

All this has done is made me want to re-read the books and has resparked my interest in reading Stephen King again.

I hope IT is good.

The Hunger Games:
Saw this at the movies when it came out, loved it then and loved it now.

The Hunger Games 2:
Damn, that became dark real fast. I love the plot twist though, although the ending confused me a little.

Watching the 3rd movie now (Part 1 of 2), it has gotten even darker. The beginning was pretty confusing but I caught up. Not as good as the first two, but I wanna know what's happening so I'll keep watching.

I ended up watching those movies in reverse order, and it was pretty clear how much better the original story and movie were from its sequels.

So that's why they felt so.. random and enforced. Thought the first two were really good. Third seemed like a weird filler of sorts. Let's not even talk about the fourth.

Yeah, the CGI is Japanese CGI which is really bad compared to Hollywood. The first time I watched it, the CGI, especially on Mr. Google Eyes bothered me and took me out of it. In the 2nd half though where it's like CGI Rubber Suit Godzilla I was fine with it. On 2nd viewing, CGI looked even worse! Like even rubber suit Godzilla during some of the action sequences looked really bad.

I think it's a great movie in so many ways and easily one of my favorite Godzilla films, but it does have a couple flaws. Mostly that, plus the AMERICA gal's acting was a little too cheesy as an English speaker. Otherwise good stuff.

http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/shin-godzilla-2016

I like this review and I feel like it touches on a lot of the strong points of the film. How it's a new & fresh take, yet how its true to the original, how it's modern and a parable for Japan and the Fukushima disaster, yet how it still rings true on the postwar WW2 themes of the original. Plus how it deals with the whole bureaucracy.

The CGI didn't bother me too much since I went in expecting it to be not really that great. Fortunately it wasn't a movie that depended on the special effects to carry it.

Yeah, if they did I could not tell at all. Still looked real bad!

I kinda gave up on ever expecting anything near Hollywood CG in Japanese movies when I learned about Japanese budgets. Can you believe Guilty Gear Xrd budget was like in the 5 million range? If that was made in the west it'd be like a 30 million dollar budget game. Japan budgets are really tiny for entertainment. Well, outside Kojima, but that's why Konami fired him ;_;

Was checking up on the mumblecore indie horror director scene and what everyone has been up to recently and saw Ti West did a ...western with Ethan Hawke & John Travolta last year? In the Valley of Violence. Reviews seem mixed, but as a big Ti West fan (even if The Sacrament was weak) I'll have to check it out soon.

As to everyone else in that scene:

David Sandberg of Light's Out short -> Feature film has a new Conjuring spinoff - Annabelle: Creation coming out. Currently at 100% RT after 15 reviews.
Mike Flanagan of Oculus/Hush's last was 82% RT Ouija: Origin of Evil sequel and is doing a remake of I Know What You Did Last Summer next.
Adam Wingard of You're Next has Deathnote coming out soon.
Joe Swanberg, who really was never a horror guy and more just a mumblecore guy, had a Netflix movie out a few months ago Win it All
It Follows Director (not really mumblecore imo) has a new movie out this year, Under the Silver Lake

Not sure if I'm missing anyone. I've seen 0 of the bolded movies that are out, so I've definitely got some catching up to do. Kinda bummed to see Ti West moving away from horror since my favorite horror films in the last decade were House of the Devil and The Innkeepers. Even Triggerman was one of the better tense as fuck horror thrillers.

Also most of them are making studio films now outside Swanberg who keeps doing his own mumblecore thing. Still, looking forward to Wingard's take on Deathnote, should be fun.

In the Valley of Violence is fun. It’s not great or anything and I hope Ti goes back to horror, but I definitely liked it more than The Sacrement.

I know some people that have seen Annabelle: Creation and it sounds like a good time. I didn’t really like Lights Out overall, but I thought it was well directed, so I have some hopes for Annabelle.

Still have to see Ouija 2, but I liked Oculus quite a bit. I’ve heard the OG IKWYDLS movie was basically nothing like the book, so maybe this will be considerably different. I have to admit I have a soft spot for the original movie because it is VERY late 90s, and those were my prime teenage years.

Adam Wingard is on notice after Blair Witch. It was an enormous fumble, and I’m slightly concerned his two big successes may have been flukes, given his other available output. Choosing to do an anime adaptation is a bad sign.

Joe Swanberg movies, and mumblecore flicks in general, are worse than the skull walls built by Pol Pot, and less entertaining. The dude is fun when he acts in other movies though. Do not pay money to see a movie he himself made. This is said in both the Talmud and Hadith. It’s not mentioned in Christian texts because it is a false religion, although many gnostic texts mention it.

Watching the first V/H/S movie; first short film, with the bar-hopping bros, was great. Second one, the road trip on Route 66 was longer than needed, and nonsensical. Will finish before heading back to Japan, I hope.

I hadn't seen The Sixth Sense, since its theatrical run, or maybe initial video release. It's still the most tightly scripted movie I've seen of M. Night's body of work.

I thought the second one was pretty creepy if it's the one I'm thinking of with the hotel room. But yeah most of the ones on V/H/S are good. For how forgettable most movies are I still remember like 3 segments from VHS1 pretty clearly, the first, second?, and the final one.

Yeah, that's the one. It was creepy, but mainly benefited from establishing a pace and then sticking with it. It's definitely a surprising increase in action.

It's not bad. It gets compared to Leone because it's a throwback western, but it felt more like somewhere in between Don Siegel and John Wick so you end up with a derivative B-western that can get  pretty corny, especially when it turns its focus to the female roles. But since it's a modern Ti West production it subverts some expectations and is punctuated with some concentrated bits of violence. I really like Ethan Hawke and grew up more with those American B-westerns on cable when I was a kid(Two Mules for Sister Sara instead of Once Upon a Time in the West) so I was alright with that.

I hadn't seen The Sixth Sense, since its theatrical run, or maybe initial video release. It's still the most tightly scripted movie I've seen of M. Night's body of work.
It's fun going back to his early stuff and remembering why he was such a big deal after he's burned all that goodwill and lowered everyone's expectations in the last 10 years or whatever. I thought the same thing about Unbreakable and saw The Village for the first time a few months ago before it got kicked off of HBO. I can understand being put off by the twist but I thought that core movie about the Quaker community was surprisingly mature with a great cast.

---

The Dead Zone.

I had been thinking about Stephen King lately between Stranger Things, Dark Tower and the newest It trailer and saw this come up on Amazon Prime. It takes its time and doesn't have that much violence for a Cronenberg film but I really appreciated this more deliberate pacing and lack of jump scares compared to modern pop horror. It's not as good as Videodrome or The Fly but the way the premise develops and comes together at the end was *really* satisfying for me.

The Village could have been an awesome movie if they just played the premise completely straight.
Honestly, this would improve a lot of M. Night's stuff drastically. The Village is just the most blatantly obvious example.

All VHS and ABC's of Death movies suck ass. I'd have loved to have some decent anthological horror movies going but none of these stand out.

The only segment I remember was the one with the goblin chick going "I like you" over and over. Mostly because my friends kept quoting it and Snorenado once mentioned he knew the people who made it personally.

ABCs of Death, sure. I can't remember a single good short. But c'mon, VHS had some good ones. In fact now that I'm remembering VHS, it's probably my favorite horror anthology since Creepshow. The Jason X/Slenderman story in the woods where the monster can't appear on camera? Genius! That spooky hotel bit that leaves it to your imagination is really uncomfortable. The haunted house where the people are within the walls and stuff? Pretty great. Opening one was clever too with vampire girl.

VHS2...the only one I remember is the fucking crazy cult demon summoning one by Adam Wingard I think? I actually don't like that one because it's just so over the top, but I can respect it for the ambition.

he did what i predicted he'd do, he listened to the criticisms of Prometheus and violently tried to course correct...but the script still sucked. So instead of some half hopeful move about really smart ppl doing dumb shit consistently and paying for it, we get a cynical movie filled with ppl who are more "everyman" but have zero common sense doing really dumb shit and dying horribly. Sprinkle shallow religious themes ontop.

I've read a few reviews which praised VHS2 as being better than the first anthology. I seem to recall most reviews saying that the latest one was straight garbage. Seems like it shouldn't be that hard to do found-footage, short, horror pieces.

Finished the first one tonight. I liked all the shorts to some degree or another, but like any anthology, some landed better than others. The Halloween haunted house one was pretty great; I love a good ghost story. The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger had tremendous potential, but the guy was a bad actor, and the premise felt inconsistently implemented. Even so, a few of the shocks and unsettling bits were perfect. The siren/harpy one that I first mentioned was still the best for me.

Predator nerds hate the super predators in predators (and the movie in general) but i love that movie.

There are no bad purely predator movies. Something I can't say about Aliens...I think part of this is they've never tried to just straight up remake the first movie. Each predators movie give us a new scenario, new types of characters and new setting.

Always down for Aronofsky. Glad he's back to smaller scale stuff after Noah.

Also how does Michelle Pfeiffer look so much better than J-Law in that trailer? :lol

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Loved this more than the first. Much better villains, cooler settings, better character arcs, better music(Flashlight!), the 3rd act wasn't mindless, and it leaned harder on the 60's pulp Sci-fi look and silliness.

yeah and ngl, the father stuff fucked me up  :'( :'( :'(

Jane Eyre meets noir in the confusingly titled Lady Macbeth. Which is just gol-dern great. The direction and dialog is austere, but the performances are anything but. This doesn't actually have anything to do with Shakespeare, its actually based on a classic 1800's Russian novel, but it easily transposes into the mid-1800's British setting it occupies, in fact that it was written for anything else seems strange. The power dynamics of its time and place are particularly key to how the story progresses, making it a rare period piece with a contemporary attitude. But mostly its a brilliantly performed piece of acrid history.

Artsy lowbrow comes to life in the genuinely delightful and sweet Lost in Paris, in which the late middle-aged husband and wife duo of directors/writers/stars go on an adventure in well, Paris that involves lots of madcap sorts of shenanigans. The 89-year-old Emmanuel Riva (yes, from Amour) plays the third wheel/catalyst/macguffin in the film, and for a very elderly person its a surprisingly physical performance. Its slight, but pleasurable, like a better feature length version of Mr. Bean than Rowan Atkinson actually made.

Most art isn't about the impermanence of itself. Hell, many artists are shooting for some sort of immortality to begin with. But the charm of the subject of The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman's Portrait Photography, is in how little of a crap she gives about posterity, which is a funny stance for a photographier to take. Its an Errol Morris documentary, but he breaks from his usual form, the interviews with his subject aren't conducted through his 'interrotron' but in what appears to be Dorfman's archival room. She talks vividly of the past that her life work evokes, but its not necessarily a wistful film. We get to spend some time in the company of an idiosyncratic artist as she details her life's story and her process, and Morris himself seems to be enamored with her as she is with her large scale photography. I got to be too.

ps
spoiler (click to show/hide)
there's some purely accidental similarities to the recent Kiyoshi Kurosawa joint Daguerreotype, what with the photography mechanics and the driven artist. Its like the non-sinister version of that.

Nah that's Highlander 2 and always will be Highlander 2.

Act like Highlander is even approaching the level of classic as Predator, brehs

To be fair, the first Highlander is one of the worst original genre movies ever made, so it makes sense that its sequel would be even worse.
