So I've been gradually building my knowledge base on Indian film. I'm not gonna lie, its actually kinda tough to get into 'Indian Film' because there's no one Indian cinema industry, there's actually dozens of them, stratified by language, artistic ambition and financial resources. Even people I know who speak an Indian language have a limited perspective ('That guy's movies? I dunno, he's only in Tamil films, right?').

My longwinded point being is that I see a fair number of films that I take something from, but I can't actually easilly reccomend to most people. But the pleasingly nasty thriller Nh10 is a notable exception. Its got a compact running time, minimally intrusive songs, and a simple (and rightiously angry) premise. A couple of well meaning but basically flawed yuppies attempt to intervene in an honor killing, and then shit gets grim. Its a well made thriller that nimbly leaps over many of the traps that much other Indian, and even Asian cinema falls into that makes it a bit impenetrable. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for any outside the mainstream thriller that's even a bit clever, as my previous post may attest to. The same director/actor combo have another film out this summer, so I've got something to see in July and then derail this thread away from a Marvel film. Huzzah!

Does this also add in musical numbers for no apparant reason? I remember watching one Indian film which was like 2 hours normal action-thriller and 1 hour of added musical numbers.

Loving the reviews dunking on Mute.

“More than fifteen years of gestation clearly did nothing for Mute, by far his worst film to date, and easily one of the worst in recent memory, period ... at the very least, serves to make The Cloverfield Paradox no longer Netflix’s worst high-profile sci-fi misfire this month.”

There's songs, but they're brief and occur in the background while the characters are doing not exactly critical yet still narratively essential things (a song plays while the couple is driving through the countryside, for example).

Its not unlike what many an 80's film would do back when film soundtracks where a bigger deal and cramming songs into the periphy made for a good selling point. Stallone films did this a lot (Rocky III, Rocky IV, Over the Top, Cobra).

I almost didn't make it through the first episode of Altered Carbon because is was so hamfisted (I had to skip through the ending and took a week-long break after half of it) :holeup  Maybe it would have been bearable if Bladerunner 2 didn't come out only a few months ago.

Watched the entirety of Boogie Nights last night. Can't believe a movie that long could keep me that entertained. Biggest take away being Mark Wahlbergs performance. He seemed to be in his habitat being this eminently innocent doofus and I loved watching every minute of it. Paul Thomas Anderson somehow made someone losing this innocence funny as fuck. Can't believe I waited till now to watch it.

PTA will never make a movie as great as that. Perfect casting. Many of those actors right as they were hitting their prime.

I would've watched an entire spin-off movie of Dirk and Reed chasing a music career.

Totally. The atmosphere is just perfect. The Chinese kid chucking firecrackers around, the thick smoke, the oppressively loud music while an unhinged Alfred Molina is waving a gun around and holding it to his head. The tension was near unbearable the first time I watched it. So good.

i felt like annihilation has more in common with films like apocalypse now, come and see and stalker than say 2001 and under the skin where the latter are more cerebal and the former are psychological journeys through hell.

eh, AN is like my favorite film of all time (or at least used to be when was emo philosophically depressed teen, probably just top10 now) and Annihilation has absolutely nothing on Apocalypse Now. AN is this amazingly surrealistic journey full of gripping and moments on the journey down the river. Like every scene is amazing in that movie and there's also a lot of character depth.

Like Annihilation doesn't seem that hellish to me. I don't even find it particularly scary. Most of the time it's like walking around the colorful flower land. There's no sense of evil or darkness to it, it's just nature. I think I would've like to see more shit actually happen. But in the end there's just not a ton of stuff there. It felt like there weren't that many scenes in the film and not a ton happens. Idk, I mean I do like Annihilation, but it just really felt like a short story/1 hour TV episode of TZ, and not enough substance for a 2 hour movie. Sorta like how most Walking Sims have a neat concept and are pretty but don't have enough gameplay! :P

Annihilation - Pretty much loved it. Very different than the book. It’s like Garland read it and basically decided to do his own take on the same scenario. Even the meaning of the title is changed. The scenes in Area X often feel very Stalker-y, and there’s at least one shot that’s a direct homage to it.

I need to see it again. Much like BR2049, I was drawn in enough that I didn’t even notice the length, but thinking back, I think there’s either some fat to be trimmed or there are scenes that I need to see again now that I know everything that’s going on.

Put me down as someone that thinks Boogie Nights is PTA’s best. It’s not only a legitimately great movie, but it’s also a fun ride that pretty much anyone can enjoy. It’s got depth and works for a very wide audience. I love all of PTA’s stuff (haven’t seen Phantom Thread yet), but he struck the perfect balance here. One of the best casts ever, too. And that fuckin’ soundtrack is Tarantino-level quality.

In addition to the absolutely amazing Alfred Molina scene, this is one of my all time faves, too.

This YT comment sums it up nicely:
“This is probably my favourite movie shot of all time. Every inch of it screams "these people are idiots" and "God I wish I was at this party".”

I like the movie, but it’s toward the bottom of the list. I’ve never heard a satisfying read on how the climax of the movie ties together all the themes explored (and there are a bunch) in the individual stories. The best I’ve heard is the equivalent of “shit happens.” I’m wondering if PTA’s head got a little too big at this point. Still, it has amazing performances and a couple of great Aimee Mann songs. It also looks great and is impeccably edited.

Watched Call Me By Your Name.

I'm honestly having a hard time understanding what other people see in this. The relationship between the two characters seems more about lust than actual love.

Maybe it's the cinematography and nice scenery that people like. That's the part I like.

Along with those movies, and some others mentioned, it reminded me a bit of The Fountain, as well, in that "explores ideas but doesn't hand out all the answers" kind of scifi/trippyness. Anyway, I loved it. The weirdness, the meticulous pace, the steady descent into madness, the visuals, even the soundtrack and sound effects. It's the kind of movie that comes along maybe once every few years that you can't believe a major studio dropped so much money on and allowed into theaters, because it absolutely does not have mainstream appeal in the slightest.

I didn't mind Moon, but this was Blade Runner theatrical cut-tier. Let's scrap the rules we've established in this movie prior so we can have all the schmalz!

Call Me By Your Name should get a Razzie for being a male lgbt-themed movie that has the audacity to show a girl’s titties but gives us no dudes hanging dong.

I’ve seen it twice and I’m pretty sure there’s at least one dong.

My Asia trip continues. Watched Attack the gas station. What an amazing movie. Makes me want to have a horrible childhood and subsequently rage against society. But only if all is forgiven in the end. Too much of a chicken otherwise. We should have recreational gas stations everywhere to allow our youth to integrate into society better.

:aah

Plan for tonight: Shaolin Soccer.

If there is, it’s like on the edge of the screen for a second or something. My eyes were peeled. Such a disappointment of a movie.
