Yeah I've seen Melancholia, it was alright. Prefer Hellstar Remina for that kind story.

Watched Thoroughbreds. Was good. There are glimpses of some cool direction in there with nice hitchcockian music tones and camera angles. There's one shot with ave maria playing and framed very nice. The script by the writer/director in their first film debut is really tight and delivered great by the two leads + Anton Yelchin (RIP). Will check out what the guy does next. And I guess either they had to re-write the plot after Yelchin died hence it just coming out now, or the studio sat on it forever.

Jus got out of Thoroughbreds and I almost completely loved it. Maybe re-routing the movie after Yelchin died had something to do with it, but the direction of the movie felt a little off, although there are lots of well done scenes and moments. I think the script could’ve been maybe been made into a fantastic movie with different writing, editing, and scoring decisions. The score for most of the movie is very percussion based, as would fit a tense thriller, which this movie is not.

Ugh, I just made it sound like I didn’t like the movie, but it’s really good, I swear. The characters spoke to me and it’s also very funny. This probably could’ve been turned into a comedy with different editing.

Overall, I highly recommend. I think this is a future cult classic.

London has Fallen

Trash, like taken waaaaay too far from the get go to be exciting. The terrorist attack is so complex and stupid it destroys all suspension of disbelief.

The Ritual

Mixed bag, opening 30-45 ish min are strong (with some great landscape shots), but the horror reveal is weak as is the finale. Overall would recommrnd a try to horror people.

What the fuck was going on with Daisy Ridley during production that made her whole head so bloated every few scenes? Did she she have booze bloat and then went to rehab? Or did she booze it up heavy before reshoots? There are scenes where her whole jaw structure looks like a different person and her head is sinking into her neck. Shit was weird.

:lol I think this is the first time anyone's ever commented on this.

I HATE the music in this trailer but I wanna watch this

Watched it, it's a little different than I expected lead character wise, they dont dip into his circumstance and motivations too much (happy about this) and sorta just lets the audience insert some of the finer details in our imagination or wonder about it (i mean if you're the type that can be arsed). I liked it, but I honestly cant recommend it, if you're new to the genre I have about 10 Korean films I'd suggest you watch over this, if you're a genre vet, this movie is about as stock standard as you can get, literal boilerplate code lol.

Saw 3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri and while great character writing and performances are their own rewards, I did find the last quarter or so to be a little aimless and the movie maybe a little too satisfied with it's theater of misery. I'm not sure what they were getting at beyond "love each other, you bunch of motherfuckers".

Watched Amadeus again... maybe for the 10th time. F. Murray Abraham is astounding in this role. The way he drifts among admiration, hatred, sorrow is just so amazing.  It was about someone who not only lost his faith, but then held a contempt for a God who would bless someone he saw as beneath him with incredible gifts. Just amazing.

Also watched Thor: Ragnarok. I enjoyed the goofiness of it, and my wife was really let down by it. She felt the entire time on the garbage planet was just a wasted plot and was boring. She also doesn't like Jeff Goldberg. I finally have come to the realization that the Marvel movies are just being made like comic book stories - solve the main character's personal crisis, have a guess hero if you don't like the main hero, and move the overarching multi-issue back story forward about TWO CENTIMETERS FORWARD every issue. That way you buy the next issue or watch the next movie. What's even sillier is that a lot of the overarching plot between the movies is given in the credits scenes.

I'm a little slow on the draw obviously.

Also I had no idea that was Karl Urban as Skurge.

Thoroughbreds

This is one dark ass flick. Up there with Good Time for bleak amorality. Its equal parts sharp dialog and mood piece which I was surprised with. Some good long takes and just... mood. I dug it. The ending is also a little shocking and ambiguous. What I pulled away from it was darker than the other way it could be interpreted.

Its Heathers without the camp, yet its still humorous in parts due to the sharp writing. Sleek and cold which is fitting considering the environment these characters come from.

Watching some reviews and apparently the DP on this did "A Girl Walks Home Along at Night". You could see the confidence and intent in a lot of the shots. Another aspect I walked away surprised with.

About to start second flight, watched a bunch of movies on first flight. Just wanna say that Mike Birbiglia’s Don’t Think Twice was really good! One of the most genuine and emotional dramas I’ve seen in a while. Out of everything I watched that clicked with me the most. Having done an improv troupe summer class set with upright citizen’s brigade years back I connected a bit more with it I think.

Yeah, it’s pretty stock standard.

Feels like it was a straight yakuza movie and then the producers said, “What if it had a white dude as the protagonist?”

Jared Leto’s foreign-ness, his “Outsider-ness” could easily have been portrayed by a regular but asocial, non-yakuza Japanese person, and it would have paralleled Orochi’s backstory perfectly, showing how we are subject to the consequences of our individual choices. Aside from Emile Hirsch’s cameo scene, the entirety of the film would have worked with a non-gaijin lead.

I liked the period set shots more than anything else.

I've never seen either version of The Italian Job, despite being a big fan of heist media. I watched the remake with Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron. In many ways, it's an action movie of its time. It feels like they spent about as much on it as a James Bond movie of the same era. They roll out Donald Sutherland for some dramatic credit, and predictably fridge him so Mark and Charlize have something to motivate them… only they're remarkably cavalier about their situation for the entire run.

It's a fun movie full of people who were stars on an upward trajectory.

I'm gonna track down the original next.

Annihilation- finally got to see this on netflix. shame, it does the movie no justice and i enjoyed it a lot less than i would have if i saw it in theaters. This movie is about visuals, and not seeing it on the big screen kinda ruins it.

The original is a lot of fun, though certainly of its era as well. Unsurprisingly it's more memorable than the remake of only for Noel Coward hamming it up and the song at the end.

Yeah, Korg was funny but the Marvel Mickey house is doing these gag riffs in every single fucking movie now. Even the Last Jedi they did this shit, which was completely out of place. It's so odd to because it's like they want the movies to be more like SpaceBalls than actual action hero movies.

I don't get how people aren't tired of it.
