Alien Covenant is pretty bad. I don't see how anyone could enjoy it. As a sequel to Prometheus it's shit. The interesting plotlines that movie introduced are thrown away so quickly. Ridley just dosen't care and it's so obvious he dosen't care about the series. David caught his attention and whatever fuck the previous movie's plot and main character. But the problem is now the movie feels like a mashed together Prometheus and Alien movie. Prom was almost there with being able to stand on it's own and a sequel could have made it better in retrospect. Covenant does do that but in the bad way. Since somehow Covenant has even worse characters and then falls apart into yet another typical Alien movie. Prometheus feels somehow far more unique and ambitious.
I mean Covenant has Billy Crudump as the most unbelievable captain perhaps in movies ever. I get that he only becomes Captain thanks to James Franco's death, but he was still 2nd in command and man is he so weak willed that it's almost pathetic. You also can't use the excuse of say Alien where these people are just space truckers, blue collar workers. No, these are new frontier brave explorer people. He also just makes the stupidest actions around David that makes the idiotic scientists in Prometheus look good. I know in these movies you're supposed to allow characters make bad choices, but it's insulting here. Also off the top of my head I can't think of most characters making really bad or unmotivated decisions. Crudmp has no reason to trust David, in fact he has all the reasons to not.
But also the movie decides to further muck up the Alien mythology all for the sake of making David a better character. David is a good character(though clearly evil to the point I can't see why anyone would trust him). Making the Alien less mysterious has been a lame choice, but Prometheus still kept them kind of up in the air, but having David just making them because he is fascinated with creating life is not that interesting on a worldview level.
Beyond that I find the ending forced and mean spirited. I guess Alien movies all have that 4th Act ending, but I don't know it just felt too by the numbers. The cast also feels pretty lifeless despite having an interesting premise for them.
