Now we just need Gal Gadot back.
That's the plot of Fast X

Han and Dom team up to redeem evil augmented Gal.

Guessing it's going to be one of these three dumb things:

-He just survived and went into hiding
-He was brought back as a cyborg like the bad guy in Hobbes & Shaw
-It's not Han, but his twin brother

Nah Rock and Vin are in a tissy.

Apparently they squashed this beef and Rock will be back in Fast 10.  Maybe Statham too?  Right now he's trying to do an Expendables spin-off movie.

Paul Walker isn't even dead in the Fast & Furiousverse, so they don't even have to make up some crazy BS to explain him coming back. Just put his brother in there and CG his face up.

Went to see BAD BOYS 4 LIFE or FOR LIFE or BAD BOYS 3.

Bad Boys is of course known for the Michael Bay-ness of it all. Helicopters, almost naked women and explosions. With Will Smith as detective Mike Lowrey and Marcus back on the big screen you expect some real Michael Bay-ness for the new age.
The intro scene makes you think that Bad Boys is back. Mike is racing his Porsche to the hospital while Marcus is complaining he should drive safely. The soundtrack fits, the cinematography and visual presentation has certainly gotten a big upgrade and you get that Bad Boy campiness.

But what follows is not Michael Bay enough. It's a decent enough action flick to stream on Netflix or something, in that it isn't offensively bad but this is not the vibe you want a Bad Boys movie to have.
Gone are the everyone is shooting no one is hitting anything and flying cars antics. Replaced by a rather 'dark' plot about a Mexican drug cartel who's out to get Mike. For this type of movie it actually has too much plot. And sure there's some Bad Boys moments in there but you get a sense that the action is very much toned down in terms of craziness and most of all explosions. Same for the almost naked women although Vanessa Hudgens looks gorgeous in this, Mike is actually stuck in the 'friendzone' throughout this whole movie. The new modern things thrown into the mix like drones are kinda redundant and none of the new characters are interesting. The movie had more to work with. For example, Marcus' daughter marries a Marine. Michael Bay would've probably put in a scene where the dude helps his father in law and turns out to be a real killer or something. Outside of a few jokes the comedy doesn't work either. The plot is way too 'dark' and personal for Mike to joke around about. You don't want to see the Bad Boys breaking down with 'FEELINGS' you want them to blow shit up and wreck a city to get a pound of weed. It also doesn't help that they kill off one of the funniest characters halfway into the movie. And, oh this thing runs for way too long. It's a 2+ hour movie that feels like a 3 hour movie.

It's Bad Boys, how can you fuck this up? Fucking Hollywood hacks  :lol

Most reviewers seem to like that it is more mature and reflective or whatever. GTFO with that shit. I want car crashes and explosions in my Bad Boys.  :maf

Free Solo

Beautifully shot documentary that does well to set up the technicality and structure of the rope-less (free) solo climb of El Capitan by Alex Honnold, helping one appreciate more the build up and gripping footage captured during the 3000ft ascent.

It was interesting hearing him read his climbing notes journal. Micro details of limb placements and strong emphasis on certain key parts to change or repeat for the next attempt, all spoken in his casual, highly unperturbed manner. They took an MRI of his brain and found he has no fear response to their tests, which seems hardly surprising given what he's had to come to grips with during climbs.

There was a touching yet unsentimental moment where he told the crew he didn't want them around him during some particularly dangerous sections as he'd feel badly if they had to witness a friend die in front of them should the worst occur. For those sections they placed unmanned cameras and also filmed using insanely powerful telephoto lenses. A few could barely look in the monitors during certain moments.

The film periodically cuts back and forth with the relationship to his recent girlfriend, who kept reminding me of Ellen Page and Haley Joel Osment. Honnold states at one point she's one of the best things to have happened to him yet she's presented as having been a fairly significant liability in regard to his climbing and focus and essentially admits to having the desire to tone down his ambitions. Seems there's a continual eagerness on her part for more normality while Honnold is shown still rather content as the wild-ish loner. It's a curious coupling.

His feelings on the climb were apparently he'd be making the ascent whether it was ultimately filmed or not. Brought to my mind the documentary Man on Wire where Philippe Petit, the tightrope walker who crossed the Twin Towers in the 70s sans safety wires, reflected on a similarly personal motivation and commented he felt at the time the act was a kind of poetic expression; one man contrasted with the sheer magnitude of such structures.

Blows my mind that by the time it takes me to brew a cup of tea he'd scaled 200-300ft with his bare hands :mindblown

And in the average time between posts on The Bore he'd ascended El Capitan :doge

Kiefer's voice kills me in that movie but otherwise I like it.

Did you watch Director's Cut? The theatric cut has a dumb voice over at the beginning that basically spoils the movie.

Also I LIKED Kiefer's voice.

Darkman, Army of Darkness, and Drag Me to Hell are all comic book-y movies that I think make Raimi make a decent fit for this in addition to SM2. I think the appropriate style is within his reach as Doctor Strange should be especially campy.

In Search of Darkness was fun, but it’s very light. They hit most of the major 80s horror flicks though. There’s like no lesser known stuff. I saw every movie covered in it and most of you probably did too.

Larry Cohen, John Carpenter Joe Dante, Barbara Crampton, and Alex Winter all make for excellent talking heads in it. John Carpenter keeps it real throughout, and shits on the Halloween sequels as they come up (he doesn’t exactly shit on 3 but he’s not proud of it).

He should be very proud of Halloween 3, which is the best of the entire franchise after the original and is probably the best John Carpenter movie made by someone who wasn't John Carpenter ever made.

I did a rewatch of the franchise recently. I was actually pretty wrong about it. It’s a bit better than I gave it credit for around the board. I think the order I’d settle on would be:

1 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 5 > 6

I honestly don’t remember any details of the plot of 5 or 6 other than the stupid cult shit and the dude at the end of 5 burning down the police station, so they’re pretty bad.

I didn’t know the story about Carpenter almost doing Firestarter. That would’ve been really cool.

Larry Cohen was my favorite dude on the thing, I think. RIP. He was like a zillion years old but he seemed like a cool old dude with a ton of stories that you’d like to chill with.

I just limited it to the first 6. I kind of consider H20 (which is a pretty decent movie) more of a Scream clone than a Halloween movie, kinda? It felt like a good point to declare the original series over. Eh, let’s try this...

2018 > H20 > RZ1 eh I tried oh come on you can do it > Resurrection? > RZ2 (did not finish)

I think getting the look and feel of the original right really makes 2018 the clear winner. I recall not really liking some things about how it played out, but getting the look and feel right forgives a lot of sins. Plus it wasn’t so far off the mark that I’m uncertain about the sequel.

BOP looks like a fun movie but not something that necessarily needs a cinematic release.
Would've been a better fit for a streaming platform.

Not to mention that Harley Quinn doesn't have the same clout as Batman or the Joker has.
"Commissioner Gordon: The Story of Gotham's Finest" would've equally bombed.

Saw the live action Oscar shorts.

If I had to guess, Saria will win and that was my favorite "serious" short.

But as for my top 5 ranking:

1. Nefta Football Club - Some good humor and innocence. Doesn't have any Oscar bait, but like I said, this is my favorite and not what I think will win.

2. Saria - Great short based on a true and tragic story. As someone who doesn't even care about Oscars I was really happy for the real life orphans when I saw them react to getting nominated. I guess I feel differently about it when it's like this is the only moment the world will ever know your name at all as a living person as opposed to just being awards for the sake of being awards. Anyways, enough soap boxing. This was damn good.

3. The Neighbors' Window - I heard this story told on a podcast. I guess it's based on a article that was written by some lady. It's a true story. Well the article/podcast episode. The movie alters things which is fine. It's good. The most American friendly short.

4. Brotherhood - This one is a doozy. A tough watch of a family with lots of built up tension. Misunderstandings and judgements that lead to devastating consequences that should have been avoided had their been better communication. Great little twists as we discover the characters' truths. I feel bad I put it down this low, but this is still worth a watch. Easily could be swapped with number 3, really.

5. A Sister - Well, if you never saw a film like this it would be good. Too bad I saw the Danish film The Guilty a few years ago which takes the same concept and just stomps all over this short. It's not really fair to compare almost, but The Guilty is so damn good that this short is more like an appetizer of an appetizer. Skip A Sister and go right into The Guilty.

Dragon Inn (1967)

I started watching A Touch of Zen a while back from this director, but never finished it. Dragon Inn is much easier to get into, the early parts with one of the fighters just messing around with tableware and expertly throwing food around are awesome. After a while I think I started to understand what King Hu is all about. I became deeply peaceful, more than I can ever remember with a movie. I'll have to go back to A Touch of Zen someday.

The Descent (2005)

Really liked this. Partway through I was thinking, even if the whole movie was just the women versus the cave, I'd be happy. It did turn out to be the most intense part, although I liked the rest too.

I think the movie works better if you assume the main woman had lost her mind, and the whole scene where she was told not to trust Juno wasn't real. She could have made it up based on seeing Juno's pendant. It would be fun if you could think that all of it was her imagination, and she was the real murderer, but that doesn't quite fit.

The Babadook (2014)

I get scared pretty easily by movies, and used to have night terrors, so this one had me shutting the closet door tight and keeping a flashlight to periodically check on it. I'm not sure about the actor for the kid in this, at times I couldn't tell if he was accidentally breaking into a grin unrelated to the movie or if it was meant to be the character. Kind of distracting but I guess finding him annoying helps the story.

Birds of Prey bombed, patriarchy strikes again  :goty2

It only made $33 Million this weekend, the early predictions had it doing $50+.

Shame looks good.  Going to go this week.

Wouldnt the R rating be holding back many hopeful ticket sales?

Maybe, but that didn't hurt Joker or the two Deadpool movies.
