Finally watched Knives Out. Didn't know the movie had a ton of social commentary in it, thought it was just going to be a well done caper film. Not that the social commentary bothered me, I just wasn't expecting it. I will watch the inevitable sequel.

That Uncut Gems snub though. :goty Still pretty crazy. Thank god baby's first anti-capitalist rambling aka Joker didn't get anything over a smart concept like Parasite  ...I think? tbf I slept through many parts until best director and also... 8 Mile? :confused

Uncut Gems and Lighthouse being snubbed was ridiculous. 1917 deserved best cinematography but Gems shoulda been nominated for everything 1917 was nominated for. Good to see Parasite do well.

Uncut Gems excelled at sustaining an intensity rivaling the most absurd clusterfucks I've ever seen. Upped the ante on what they did with Good Times too, and for my enjoyment at least it was to the detriment of the film itself. It felt like an exercise in keeping the atmosphere taut at all times, but also felt forced and fake. Imo, it's kinda overrated, but I guess it depends on how much you respect the novelty of the direction. The climax was perfect and Sandlers performance was close to his best though (PDL).

As someone who completely abhors Adam Sandler, considers him a major contributor to the moral decay and mental rot of an entire generation, and thinks the world would instantly be a better and brighter place to live in the moment he drops dead, should I still watch Uncut Gems?

Immigration or something?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
There's a lot of immigration related stuff, the whole Trombley family can't keep track of poor Marta's families country of origin but they know her mom is an illegal. Some fake progressive rich white people shots, some rich white people who love Trump shots, teenagers being alt right nazi trolls. Plus the classic rich people trying to bully and scare the poor person.

The ending shot of the movie is pretty on the nose as well.

Heh, The Neighbors' Window won best live action short. Eh, I admit I prefer the audio version I heard on podcast more than this film re-imagining, but it's alright. Twas the only American project from the 5 film selection.

Loved that Joaquin brought up his brother River in his best actor speech. He's kinda been open to bringing him up this year it seems which is nice.

Parasite for best picture did catch me off guard, but that was my favorite movie of 2019. I liked the director's second speech. His Scorsese quote was a nice bit.

-----
Watched Before Sunrise yesterday. This was long overdue for me as someone who loves Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater. I love the dialogue in this movie even when you disagree with what the character says. Like you almost want to butt in as a third person to join in on their convo. I saw the last film of this trilogy in theaters so I knew more or less that
spoiler (click to show/hide)
our characters will indeed bump into each other at some point again
[close]
, but that didn't take away from the movie as in the end it doesn't actually matter. It's just getting a chance to watch two young adults talk about their ideas of love, hate, loathing, questioning, sense of self. Now I just gotta finish it off with the second film.

Well here is the thing. Look at the spoiler if you don't mind knowing the ending.

You get your wish. Muthafucka gets capped

But other than that. Do you enjoy movies where every single last character is a total piece of shit? And the stakes are high and you are constantly on the edge of your seat cause even though Sandler is a jackoff that keeps messing up, he's still the guy you root for?

It's a good flick if that sounds up your alley. Really cool cgi intro too.

Michael Bay fest, as my brain needed a vacation. Instead, I just felt  ??? all the time during these:

Bad Boys - I forgot how hot Tea Leoni was in this. Martin Lawrence is not particularly annoying, and the plot makes sense to some degree.
Bad Boys 2 - Kind of chewing through this a little at a time. Was Bay up his own ass at this point? I don't know, but he definitely is for:
6 Underground - OMFing-Gee, this was long, poorly edited, structured like ass, and was incoherent to begin with. This is like when Zack Snyder did Suckerpunch, but Bay proves himself even less competent than Snyder. Holy shit. It's hard to know if Bay pretty much just wanted Netflix to never call him again, and this was the easiest way to make sure it happened. Just a weird, inexplicable shitshow from the opening scene to the ending.

I remember being fond of this movie. I still love the soundtrack.

Thankfully it’s not an “Adam Sandler movie” despite him starring.

Played hooky from work to go and see The Gentlemen.  It’s comfy and indulgent Guy Richie Brit-gangster-wank, so don’t go in expecting anything brand new.  That said, both my ladyfriend and I enjoyed it a good deal, and felt Grant and Hunnam were fun to watch bounce off each other.

I give it three hatchet harrys out of four Frankie four-fingers.

I'm finding it funny how on Twitter people are discovering that subtitles (and non-English films, apparently) are a thing, after the Parasite win, like they discovered a new atom or something.
Still, of course it's a positive thing, despite the reaction itself being odd.

Rick Moranis is returning to one of the franchises he helped build. The actor will appear in Disney's upcoming reboot of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Joe Johnston, who helmed the original, will direct the new take, with Josh Gad attached to star as the son to Moranis' character, Wayne Szalinski. David Hoberman is producing the reboot, with Todd Rosenberg penning the script.

LTTP but Spies in Disguise is not half bad. Saw it with my kids earlier today.

It was dubbed and not the original English version so, save for a few scenes, you could forget this was a Will Smith movie (some singing/rapping though).  :phil

So having watched A Portrait of a Lady on Fire it would have been my fav film of 2019. It currently stands as my favorite for 2020. Both it and The Souvenir handle the life and experiences of an artist and expression in wildly different ways but both are just as profound for me.

A Portrait of a Lady on Fire has this meditative quality about it that I adore. It's allows the two women the space for furtive glances and really building towards sensuality. It doesn't feel cheap and unearned either. It's all gracefully conveyed, ending on an absolute gut punch.

Sanic The Hedgehog: And None of His Shitty Friends - I'm shocked. This was actually a fun kids movie. Better than Detective Pikachu (especially once we leave the city in the Pikachu movie where it becomes a bore). Some jokes land, some don't, but they keep the jokes coming constantly. They even throw in a few jokes for the adults in the audience. Some of most pathetic product placement I have ever seen too  :lol. Like the only thing worse is probably some car movie or Wayne's World (except "dat's da joke" in WW). Jim Carey is a funny dude in this being kind of a more cartoony version of himself. Not exactly a full on transformation into Dr. Robotnik where you forget it's Jim. No it's obviously Jim and his shtick. I love how he's such a galaxy brain asshole who thinks he's better than everyone.

Decent references to worlds and items which would be unkown to anyone who doesn't know the early games. I like that they were subtle enough about it. Nice special effects. If any of you see it, you will know what made me groan the most. The dance. That fucking fortnite dance. FUCK!

But yeah, otherwise if you're trapped to go see this with your niece/nephew or your other nerd friends, you'll actually be having a laugh every few minutes.

Stosta, have you not been introduced to the cult of Jeffrey Combs? He’s one of those actors that can make just about ANYTHING watchable. And I mean anything. I have watched some serious drek for just a few minutes of that dude and I rarely come away disappointed.

The sequels are both p good too, especially for horror sequels, but less essential.

Basically just go watch Castle Freak.

Let’s all watch Castle Freak, right now.

Quote
Director Stuart Gordon was in Charles Band's office and he noticed a poster entitled Castle Freak with a Quasimodo-like man chained to a wall being whipped by a woman.[1] When Gordon asked about it Band replied "Well, that's a castle and there's a freak."[1] Band said he had no script but if Gordon wanted it, he could do whatever he wanted with the idea as long as he maintained the concepts of a castle and a freak.[1]

A lot of people think the Bride of Re-Animator is even better though I'm not sure I agree.

You should try From Beyond (same core team, less focused but goes place) & Return of the Living Dead (the first and the third with Melinda Clarke) for that sort of tone.

From Beyond is awesome. In some ways I like it better, but it’s played completely straight and if you don’t have much tolerance for 80s cheese, it might not work for people.

Also, stosta, Barbara Crampton from Re-Animator re-teams up with Jeffrey Combs and the same director in From Beyond and Castle Freak. The three of them make a great team. I really should have mentioned Barbara Crampton in my first post because she’s an absolute queen as well.

Anyway, shosta, knowing you have big gaps in horror cinema, have you tried giallo? I think you should go watch Profondo Rosso or Tenebre.
