District 9 - 7/10
Not quite all I had hoped it would be. I thought it would be a lot more documentary-like, but it took Children of Men's filmography and mixed it with Terminator's action. There are plenty of plot holes, but all in all I liked it. The most annoying part for me was that the musical score was constantly in the background, and the "documentary" parts served more as a an epilogue and prologue than an actual story device. I think the concept was much more ambitious than the actual execution.
Degrassi Goes Hollywood - 10/10
Mia is hot as hell.
(500) Days of Summer - 6/10
It's not bad, but it seems very incohesive and not just because the story jumps around. It was Hollywood's idea of what a non-Hollywood love story movie would be like. The whole monologue about gift cards being an evil institute that says it's empty emotions where you should be able to say your own struck me as ironic, because this movie is meant to elicit emotions that you've felt in a relationship. In attempting to appeal to everyone, it comes off as unfocused. Just like all Fox Spotlight pictures these days, the "indie" appeal seems like an afterthought (throw in B&S reference here, hire Zooey Deschanel, play Regina Spektor and Feist in background). All in all, it was better than I expected and a fun movie, just not as good as I had hoped.
