Why would I rip that?  That's so dumb. :lol

I never pirate from the industry I'm trying to make it in.  That's like stealing money from myself.

Not to mention that the Screwhead Edition will have U-Control, BD Live and all supplemental material from the SE DVDs (not present on the HD-DVD). Combined with the rumor that the Blu-ray might feature a better transfer based on the R3 footage that was used for the Army of Darkness Blu-ray released in the UK last year, the Blu-ray is a way better deal.

Came back from District 9. Great movies, effects were good but they still didn't completely gel with the environment. The modeling and animation of the aliens were fantastic though (you really do empathize with the "prawns", partly because the situation they're in and also because of how lifelike they animated them).

But the biggest annoyance was how obnoxious the main character was. What a fucking douche. Completely unlikable, and I'm guessing they wanted it to be this way but they went above and beyond and I ended up hating the character for most of the movie.

On the plus side, a large pig gets gravity gunned and shot at a group of enemies, it was hilarious and makes up for the Wikus character.

I pretty much had the ending spoiled for me by a short review, so any hype I had for District 9 (didn't really have any) is gone. The Hurt Locker is now playing at my local theater, so that takes priority.

It's not so much that the ending was spoiled, but what the spoiler was. I'll still see it probably, but I wanted to see The Hurt Locker more anyway. I just can't believe it's playing at my shitty town theater.

I don't even remember ever watching one, just the first five minutes or whatever on Hulu.

Just got in from seeing District 9 - for a while, I had no idea where the movie would be going. Started off as a documentary, then started to get a bit freaky, before erupting in balls-out action. Can't believe the movie was on such a shoestring budget,

spoiler (click to show/hide)
hell, the 'mech' parts were more entertaining than Transformers 2
[close]

although some of the effects where people were getting blasted to smithereens kinda looked cheesy. Thought it'd be a bit more interesting if it was mostly filmed as a documentary. Very obvious a parable to apartheid, but still good social commentary, and I liked the Jo'burg setting a lot of course. Overall I really liked the movie.

On the plane, I saw a mess of films. I will review them as Haiku:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Workprint pre-release
had goofy effects and yet
not much better here

Taken
Die Albanians!
O! Liam Fucking Neeson
You are so badass

Goemon
Entirely CG
yet somehow very touching
Better than Casshern

Fast&Furious
Paul and Vin are back,
in a mostly OK script;
Why did this get made?

DeathNote
So-so manga
gets big-screen adaptation
and still makes no sense

Alternately...
Pretty boys on-screen
reading from scripts so murky;
who is the hero?

I'm hoping District 9 is not a late, late, like next year late release here in Japan.

I think District 9 shows if you're really serious about making a good movie and go in taters deep, you can pull off something great even with a moderate budget.

2nd Darren Aronofsky I've seen after The Wrestler, which I thought was great, and now I don't think I want to watch The Fountain or Pi anymore.

i'd strongly advise against watching the opening before seeing the actual movie in the theatre. actually, i hate the current trend of offering 5 to 10 minute clips of upcoming movies online, even worse if it's the beginning of the film. takes away from the experience, sometimes even more so than all those shitty trailers that insist on giving away the whole plot, including any possible twists and in some extreme cases even the ending.  ::)

But I think it'd get one of his friends to want to see the movie, at least.

District 9 - 7/10

Not quite all I had hoped it would be. I thought it would be a lot more documentary-like, but it took Children of Men's filmography and mixed it with Terminator's action. There are plenty of plot holes, but all in all I liked it. The most annoying part for me was that the musical score was constantly in the background, and the "documentary" parts served more as a an epilogue and prologue than an actual story device. I think the concept was much more ambitious than the actual execution.

Degrassi Goes Hollywood - 10/10

Mia is hot as hell.

(500) Days of Summer - 6/10

It's not bad, but it seems very incohesive and not just because the story jumps around. It was Hollywood's idea of what a non-Hollywood love story movie would be like. The whole monologue about gift cards being an evil institute that says it's empty emotions where you should be able to say your own struck me as ironic, because this movie is meant to elicit emotions that you've felt in a relationship. In attempting to appeal to everyone, it comes off as unfocused. Just like all Fox Spotlight pictures these days, the "indie" appeal seems like an afterthought (throw in B&S reference here, hire Zooey Deschanel, play Regina Spektor and Feist in background). All in all, it was better than I expected and a fun movie, just not as good as I had hoped.

I am watching Ultraviolet on Syfy.  This may be the worst movie i've seen in a decade. I am not sure there are any real people in this movie. I think they had milla come in, do gymnastics on a blue scree, carefully map her face and then handed her a check.

And the plot is just... well it's like someoe playing a joke on all the Hollywood gurus. It's fast moving, and full of action. It's perfect! Infact, as soon as a person/group/semblance of story shows up, it is blown away in glorious CGI shootouts and then the next enemy spawns.

i had not liked aronofsky until the fountain, which i loved to death. one of my favorite movies now. and then i saw the wrestler, which i also loved. pi was ok, requiem for a dream didn't do anything for me. so don't worry if you didn't like requiem.

that's reassuring.  I'll probably check out The Fountain sometime soon.

tbh, the only reason I wanted to watch Pi was because an old professor kept mentioning it to mock the class.  Darren Aronofsky made the film in college and funded it himself or something like that.

Watched "Pokemon: Arceus' Conquering of Space-Time" with my 10 and 4 year old kids in theaters. So happy Japan's theaters have excellent air conditioning and serve draft Yebisu beer. Other than that, there is nothing worth saying about the movie; the script is a series of sound effects (WHAM! SWOOSH! BANG! PIKA!) and not even much beautiful scenery or interesting character design. My 4-year-old fell asleep, and my 10-year-old collected the wi-fi spot distributed pokemon from the hotspot. Wooo.

Tried to watch Transporter 2 which was showing in HD on broadcast TV, but gave up. Statham is one of my favorite action heroes, but the movie relied too much on mediocre CG to stage the car stunts, and Statham didn't get his fight on enough. Also, the movie didn't even make consistent internal sense. I don't mind a lack of realism, that's what action movies are for, but they have to at least make sense within their own context.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The kidnappers get Statham to drop off the kid at their hideout, have guns on him, can easily shoot him straight in the dome, but they make him get back in his car, let him drive away, then say "OK, now blow up his car!" Dumb. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Sharks-with-frickin'-laser-beams would make more sense.

Magnolia

Why is this movie 3hrs+ long? It starts out great but the last 40-60min are just too much, for the most part. It seems like the tragedies of each story are stretched farther and farther to the point where any emotional connection is just lost.

Great acting, some amazing camera work etc. The movie starts great as well, and overall I'd say it's good. Just eh, too much

Great acting, some amazing camera work etc. The movie starts great as well, and overall I'd say it's good. Just eh, too much

It's basically version 2 of Boogie Nights. if you haven't seen BN, see it, it's infinitely better and my favorite P.T. Anderson movie. although magnolia is a must-see for Tom Cruise and Tom Cruise alone.

pineapple express didn't know whether it wanted to be a fun-loving pot movie or a balls-out action movie and kind of failed at both.

I think it knew it wanted to be Shane Black-esque action movie and it succeeded.

I really liked Pineapple Express. I didn't quite love it as much the second time, but I still found it pretty awesome.
