Observe and Report

At times I thought the movie was terrible.  At times I thought it was hilarious in an Office Space type way.  Dunno what to think of it though I don't think it's an actual "good" film, but it might not be a bad one.

^It basically deserves a stoner oscar.  It isn't coherent at all but there's so many completely random funny moments that I enjoyed it more than Pineapple Express.

Hancock would have been awesome as a hard R-rated film about a superhero addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Yes. The first 15 minutes or so were pretty good, the rest is a complete disaster.

The Girlfriend Experience

Well done film.  I liked how it juxtaposed the life of an escort vs. a personal trainer.  Soderbergh did a good job with the direction; good pacing/editing throughout.  Only thing keeping it from being a great movie is I didn't like how it just kind of ended; I felt the character arcs had further to go and the movie cut things short, especially at being 76 mins.  Still, was a good film.  Now I just need to watch Che and The Informant and I'm caught up on Soderbergh again.

I used to be a fan when he was making Out of Sight, The Limey, Traffic.  Then Full Frontal, Solaris, Ocean's Twelve (11 was fun) turned me off.  Then he started making like A MILLION MOVIES A YEAR and I was like ughhhhh.

Right now he's hit or miss with me.  Eventually I'll get to his films and sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't.  But I don't think he's a incredible director who turns everything to gold or anything.  He has plently of misses in my book.

I automatically dislike it for the branding of "FROM THE DIRECTOR THAT NOBODY KNOWS WHO MADE TWO FILMS NOBODY WATCHED".

The branding is much less obnoxious when you consider that its aimed for a Canadian audience who would have heard of both those films as well as the director.  The film itself is pure Canadiana, right down to its casting, and the title is a town in Ontario.

But it's an awesome flick no matter where you're from  8)

This movie is like watching a speeding train race towards a bus full of disabled children. I haven't felt that uncomfortable during a movie in a long time. 8/10

Creepshow isnt exactly a high standard though. The hype is the buzz that has been building for it since it was canned in 2007, and reignited recently with reviews filled gushing praise proclaiming the movie as the best horror movie since Halloween or some other such nonsense. Its not even the best of 2009 (or 2007, whatever).

I really liked it. I will probably buy it.

It's not perfect and I don't think it's the best horror film since [enter 60s or 70s film here], but it's arguably the best Halloween themed film since, well, y'know the one called Halloween.

It's a great love letter to the holiday and one of the stories in particular is pretty memorable. Dougherty, especially as a first time director, pulls off a few incredible shots that I didn't expect from him. How much of that is benefiting from Bryan Singer being on set, I do not know.

I think it's an absolute travesty that it got shelved, though. It's easily better than stuff like Jennifer's Body and The Stepfather. Producing more horror films like Trick 'r Treat and less college coed garbage is a step in the right direction, I think.

Syriana is gooooood.  But he didn't direct or write it ;)  He was just a producer.  It was written and directed by Stephen Gaghan who did the Screenplay adaptation for Traffic.  He did an amazing job with Syrianna and he's done....nothing since wtf :(

... I was already told by critics and a few industry folks that saw it that it was a very flawed, but entertaining flick. I didn't really hear anyone call it the greatest film since Citizen Kane.

Saw Zombieland with some friends this afternoon. What an awesome movie. I typically hate the genre homage type film (Shaun of the Dead being one of my exceptions), but I loved this. The opening was epic and hilarious, and Woody was great. I didn't really care for Jesse Eisenberg's Michael Cera impression, but there were so many great lines and the comedic timing was excellent. Also, I typically hate pop culture references in hipster movies, but this one had so many random and great references that I found myself guffawing throughout the flick (I lol'd at "That 'll do, pig").

Jean Claude Van Damme's first intentional comedy is a low key, but pretty good film that builds enormously off of Van Damme's mere presence.  His now-weathered features and his known personal history say everything that needs to be said about his weary, mostly washed up character character before he even opens his mouth.  The movie is about him suffering a series of personal embarrassments, both large and small, and his involvement in a real-life dangerous scenario that would nominally test his action movie experience, but instead mostly just taunts him further.

The film was very well made, and I'm looking forward to future efforts by the director.  There's some really, really well done long, single take shots, not to mention a well done execution of a tricky but juicy premise.  And yes, Van Damme actually becomes a credible dramatic actor, well done JC.

Caught this at the Memphis Indie Film Fest last night. I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought the zombie premise at a radio station could be fun. I ended up leaving the theatre feeling pretty 'meh' about it.

The film isn't exactly a zombie film, though what the people become exhibit zombie-like qualities. Gore is bare minimum and most of what going on outside of the station is implied. In the last third of the flick there's a twist where you find out what is going on and you will either laugh it off or find it... um... unique. Unfortunately for me the twist led to some rather awkward cheese in the last 10 minutes when our protagonists think they have found the cure to the situation. Sad, since I thought the first 2/3rds of the movie was pretty good and suitably acted (though there was an overreliance of "tense" music in a bunch of scenes that were better off without a score).

Worth a one time watch for horror aficionados but others would probably be better off watching Talk Radio instead.

Van Damme's acting talent has actually been inversely proportional to his career success, as shortly after all his films started going direct to video he actually became capable of conveying differing emotions other then just "I'm so going to kick you in da face."

Out of all of his non-theatrical films, I can easily recommend the eastern bloc prison melodrama/underground fighting film In Hell, which goes way over the top in the dramatics department, but it all somehow coheres effectively.  Out of the three films he's made with Ringo Lam (Maximum Risk and the also surprisingly decent Replicant) In Hell would be his best flick, and one of the better overall films of his career.  So check it out why don't cha?

Watched Easy Rider for the first time last night, mostly because it's free on OnDemand.  The story is a pretty fucking ridiculous and there's too much hippie shit for my tastes, but I guess that was the time for hippie shit.   It was very beautiful at times though - like the sequence with Hopper and Fonda riding through the desert and The Band's "The Weight" played in the background.  Almost makes up for the hippie commune.

The Matrix Reloaded.

I've only ever seen the original, never the sequels (mostly because of the horrible things I've heard). It was alright. Story was dumb but the fight sequences were pretty cool - the highway scene was really great, as was Neo fighting the Smiths.

Don't even bother with Revolutions.

Yep forget Revolutions.  I'm a rabid completionist and I won't even spend money to buy the third DVD, it was so shit.  I'm thinking of throwing Reloaded in the bin and pretending there was only one awesome, awesome movie.
