Any game with custom character creation (especially one as extensive as SR2's) needs to have a screenshot option.

Forza 2, Halo 3, & PGR4 did it.  Why not Volition?

S0 should I get this game or is it as bad as SR1?

I won't play multiplayer, I play sandbox games for the story.

You're posting this question in a thread with 8 full pages of comments about how exceptional and surprising the game is, but they also all clearly enjoyed SR1.

I can't tell if you're too lazy to read or trolling.

Play-Asia finally submitted1 to my will and has shipped Saints Row 2 without waiting for their DEAD SPACE reshipment to come through. W00t!

spoiler (click to show/hide)
1 Actually I asked them nicely once, they demurred, then did it anyway. I suspect if an order goes over 5 days with shippable items, they just eat the separate shipping cost and send what's available.

finished all the missions now.... the final mission was awesome but the ending did suck. The secret mission was cool too. Good to know what happened at the end of SR1. Going to do the collectables shortly....

I gave online multi a go, it was pretty fun. Noticeably less lag than SR1 online and game modes are more fleshed out and fun. I especially like Strong Arm as theres heaps of variety. Havent been able to connect for a couple of hours though  :(

absolutely. I dont get all the complaints about shit like Resident Evil and Metroidvania with 'backtracking'. When you fail a mission in GTAIV you have to drive all the way to the mission start icon again then drive all the way to where the mission is (often halfway across the city) thats like 10 minutes of BS boring driving right there. Such terrible design. Does GTA4 have helicopter missions where you blow up heaps of shit? Can you spray fecal matter all over buildings and get paid for it?

Saints Row 2 might be too 'funny' and 'novelty' for those kinds of losers

Who fucking cares, it excels as a video game way harder becuase It knows its a fucking game and wants to be super fun. No emo Nico Bellic giving his girlfriend a lift shenaningans here

Yeah, I honestly am confused about how anyone could hate on Saints Row 2.  If anyone claims they like any 3D GTA (3, 4, and the in between) then Saints Row 2 is basically the same formula expanded and with good -- or not garbage -- core mechanics.  It's like people sit around thinking "boy, I wish I could have trouble making a 150 degree turn while going under 20 mph", or "I wish my character had trouble walking through a door because he is unable to grasp the concept of having a body", or "I wish I could target a guy running across the street as I'm getting shoot by someone a few feet from me", or "I wish I didn't have fun playing a video game", or "I wish I could fail a mission because my character died by tripping on stairs".  I can keep the list going on for a while, but you get the general idea.

And the characters in Saints Row 2 are so much better than the shitty cast of shitty friends in GTA4.  Arguably the best character in GTA4, Brucie, is outdone by one of the lesser character in Saints Row 2, Pierce.  For all the "Oscar worthy script" nonsense, the alluding to Pierces homosexuality was more tasteful and entertaining than all the shitty dates and phone calls you needed to 'experience' for Brucie.  Driving in a car only to have Pierce start singing Usher is brilliant.

Yeah the characters rule, I really like Johnny Gat personally. Couldnt stand Shandi though, I fucking hate pothead dreadlocked bitches. Maybe the character might be exotic to some but Ive met so many shitheads like her in real life

There was one cunt in GTA4 who was the worst, most annoying character in a videogame. Even worse than the pig in Beyond Good & Evil. That stupid 'cleaning up the streets' cunt. Ugh, at least he died. One of the few things GTA4 did right

the fegs who complain about saints row are losers like bishop or sporks who claim its not original and terrible because it steals from other games. even if the game is awesome they cant like it because it "sets gaming back" or some shit

i hope that GTA steals some fun from SR.

It was probably Ne-Yo (I don't even know who the fuck that is), but I don't really listen the that style of music and Usher was the first name I thought of.

In fairness to GTA IV, the above statement's not really accurate to IV. The "restart mission" function on the cellphone worked OK, it would start you at the onset of the mission. It was still inferior to SR1's restart mission, which allowed you to continue with the same armor and ammunition, as well as THE SAME CAR PARKED IN THE SAME F'ING PLACE. GTA makes you go buy armor again, and keeps your ammo depleted, so it still requires mad taxi rides and cash.

My copy of SR2 shipped two days ago, so I should be joining you homeslicez on tha' Row in a day or two.

MY problem with GTA4 isn't just how it wasn't fun. It didnt even let me TRY to have fun. Every free minute I had it was my fat fuck relative in a fucking pinch. Then i'd have to jump in a car, didnt matter which they all drove like I was getting a piggyback from a drunken irish man, and wobble to the shitty cutscene.

It was like Urban Ico. People bitch about the tedium of fucking Saints Row 2? Jesus christ there is NOTHING more tedious than the fucking dates and the fat fuck relative and the shitty driving model and god damnit jesus fuck GTA4 fans.

wow you dont have to do hitman, chop shop or racing for the crime lord achievement, just unlocked mine

Online multi is super addicting, just played like 10 matches. Got thrashed but still managed to get a couple of badges

I think I'll take a break from this game, feeling a bit Saints Rowed out. Got around 500 gamerscore so that will do for now. I'll probably start on Orange Box tomorrow and play that until Gears 2 comes out

From the crispygamer review:
Quote
This is a game about running prostitutes, customizing a cool car and keeping it in your garage, going up to a high building to see if you can base jump, watching fights that have nothing to do with you break out on the street, trying to fly a plane under a bridge, or plugging away at a difficult challenge because you know something good is going to be unlocked when you finally complete it. This is a city built as a bustling amusement park or a lively arcade. This is your virtual playground.

OH, MAMA! So stoked that at least one sandbox game developer remembers what made GTA fun.

I think there was something like that in SR1, where almost everything dropped new stuff in your Crib, like a weap or increased daily pay, but there was a mission that just said, "hey have some cash! congratulations!" I recall being vaguely disappointed.

Then GTA IV came out, where everything was "hey, have some cash!" or maybe "enjoy this lifeless new thing for your wardrobe."

I won't lie; I enjoyed GTA IV and played it, but it was disappointing compared to the GTA III-era games, in everything except visuals. Now that I've started playing Team Fortress 2 (LTTP, I know), there seems no reason to go back and torture myself with the endless grind of GTA IV's multiplayer.

Piece is awesome.  The best is when he goes in the strip club and is talking about something serious, then he gets distracted by the strippers boots and is all like "dang, where'd she gets those boots?"
