I did it at the beginning of the game.

I just had a Hunting Rifle and lots of ammo, and some very delicate VATS headshots.

what level are you? if you're doing this quest at the beginning of the game, not a good idea. You should be lvl 7/8 before doing it. Bring a bunch of rifles, mines and ammo and those ants shouldn't be too much of a problem. And yeah, keep your distance
I did it at level 3. Just use the ant nectar and shoot the antennas. The only problem I ran into was running out of ammo, but I hand two plasma pistols and those have seemingly an infinite amount of ammo, so if you have a couple of those you should be good.

I really need to start playing this again, I was loving it and then I just dropped it for no reason.

Holy Christ, how the hell do you guys deal with the fire ants in Grayditch?  I'm trying to do the "Those!" quest and my usual method of running right up to something and feeding it a shotgun blast to the face is turning out to be a woefully BAD idea with fire breathing ants.

There's a perk that increases damage against insects, could help you out. I didnt use it of course. Early on, stock up on some mines, they are nice to use. Drop them like bread crumbs and the enemy just waltzes over them.

Don't stray too far from Megaton until you level up a bit. And get a gun with a scope as soon as you can.

I grab a bunch of shit, take some Buffout so I can carry more and warp to a place where I can sell it all. Or at least I used to. Now I have more caps than I know what to do with.

That should make life a bit easier. If you get the bomb disarmed, you'll get a key to a house where you can sleep/heal. And if your levels aren't high enough to disarm it, don't forget the various drugs/chems you can take to temporarily boost your stats.

Turd Ferguson had a pretty exciting day in the Wastelands.  Found some dumb chick's younger brother holed up with a bunch of wannabe vampire freaks and in a rare instance of extending an olive branch to obviously sick and twisted people, I convinced them to not only make peace with the pussies they'd been terrorizing but to arrange a peace treaty.  And I convinced the dumb kid to go back to the town.

Then I killed some ants.  A shit load of ants.  As I was wandering around the tunnels some freak showed up after I opened a safe and demanded my recently acquired naughty nightwear.  I convinced him to go away, and then decided to kill him because hey, he's a pervert.  No karma loss!  Sweet.

Then I had to do some more crap for that crazy broad in Megaton.  I'm running low on ammo, so it's time to hang around outside of Megaton all day for the weapon caravan dude to show up so I can continue to dispense more frontier justice.

There's a hooker in some place with a giant sex lamp. I talked to her and she said she wanted out. I said I could take her somewhere. She emphasized interest in Rivet City only but at that point I hadn't been to Rivet City so I told her I couldn't take her there. I thought I'd have the option to take her after I got to Rivet City, but I went back and now I can't take her. It sucks.

Craterside supply in Megaton, plus caravans out in front of towns, and later on Rivet City.

In Megaton there's lots of places to sell shit.  Moira will buy stuff at the supply store, but so will Gob at Moriarity's (and if you're nice to him he'll give you better prices, but the shit you sell him WON'T be there to buy back later if you need it), and Leo and Jenny Stahl at the other bar (forget the name).

Also, roving trader caravans will come by the front gate of Megaton periodically.  Go outside (by the deputy droid and the guy who wants purified water) and just wait around an hour or two if no one is there.

I've been cat-sitting all day, playing since about 4pm. No distrations (except the cat, of course) for a change. All I've really got left to do is complete the final quest, but I've been dragging it out exploring. Every time I think there's no new places to find, another pops up. I remember when I first fired up the game I was disappointed the map wasn't larger.  :chicken

:bow Chinese Assault Rifle :bow2

I found an old food processing plant in Arlington that was full of Chinese ghouls that thought they were still fighting the war or something.  Killing the shit out of them gave me a large stockpile of ammo for assault rifles and a nearly endless supply of those kick ass Chinese Assault Rifles.  CAR in a mid-30 condition takes down a super mutie like it's nothing.

This happened to me once I built the railway rifle. The ground looked fine, but the sky was all messed up, just solid bands of color stretching to the horizon. Only happened in certain parts of the map, but once I sold the railway rifle, the problem stopped and hasn't shown up again. Weird.

it's like a chinese assault rifle but it does about 2x more damage, and holds 10 more bullets per magazine. It's basically a custom CAR as far as I can tell, so you can repair it with normal CARs.

its pretty good in the sense of you can just shoot all the crap you find out of it so you never run out of ammo, and it deals decent damage. Close range face smashing with coffee mugs is pretty funny. Im about 13 hours in and have more caps than I can spend so just buy the damn schematics

iirc, after breaking the sequence, you can go to GNR and talk to Three Dog and still get the achievement for Following In His Footsteps even though the quest is no longer in the list, and do the Galaxy News Radio quest out of sequence.
