Mirror's Edge thread
« on: November 11, 2008, 01:39:47 AM »
I just heard Australian retailers have their copies, but it's too late for me to get to the store.  Tomorrow I shall be parkouring my ass off though if I can get a copy.

Who's buying?

I'm not terribly bothered by game length (hell, I got 26 hours of entertainment out of Dead Space for my first run).

Time trial leaderboards, finding routes, and finding bags are going to eat some bulk hours I suspect.

Me too, but since the only other game I want is Banjo and that's only $40 I think I will go for it anyway.

That Eurogamer review didn't sound so hot but I get the feeling that he just sucks at the game. Hopefully getting all the bags will take a decent chunk of time and the thrill of the gameplay will keep the game alive for me.

I hear that, C. Everyone was talking about what a quick 8 hour game Dead Space is, and I was at nearly 2 hours midway through Chapter 2. Of 12, apparently.

6 hours of Mirror's Edge for a hardcore gamer equals 18 hours for me.

Lets see if you're wrong again after Fallout 3, WrikaWrek . (still have to play Gears 2 but no doubt you're wrong on that one too)
The demo itself isn't even worthy of being called the "most lineair shit", there are multiple paths and ways to go from point A to point B.

Did you also play this one at your friend?

What the fuck, this game is like 4 hours.

Feels more like an episode of some T.V show than anything. Doesn't feel "feature" stuff.

Game gets fun later on though, blazing through dudes, disarming sons of bitches, pretty cool.

The last part is pretty cool, but what i'm trying to say is, it's very "light", in everything. Game gets better, i hated it at first, but then i started liking it.

Horrible cutscenes though, the animated style is just ugly.

Sure, but early on in the game it's like, all you can do is go forward. That's not fun.

This game is jaw-droppingly awesome and controller-smashingly frustrating. It's great when you pick up speed and race through a level like Sonic the Hedgehog, which is about half the time, and frustrating when you have to retry a portion of a level about a dozen times to aim a jump just right, which happens the other half.

However, this game is an amazing thrill ride. The graphics and art style are astounding, the music and sound effects are top-notch, and when you get it right, it's euphoric. Even if you don't want to buy it, at least give it a rent.

Has anyone beat the game so far since getting it? The delimma I have is I can usually sit for 3 hours straight and play a game and if I only get two sessions with a game before its done I feel its a waste. And especially for something like Mirrors edge which doesn't seem to have much to come back to after you complete it other than to master the "tracks" for time trials.

I hate to be shallow but I'd rather play the free 2d beta right now than pay for the game. I'm sure my opinion will change when I get it from gamefly in a few days. But just thought to ask at least how long it was for some of you.

:hyper I got the game and I've been playing way too long tonight.  I've only run through the first chapter and for the rest of the time I've been working on the first time trial.  I only have two stars but it's a lot of fun trying to figure out the path, get a line down and not stuff up.

If anyone is interested in time trials please add me on the 360 - only one of my friends has the game so far. :-\

I disagree.

That's exactly the problem with so many games these days.  Developers try to cram so much bullshit into their game in order to have another bullet point on the back of the package and end up producing a LOT of content that is somewhat average throughout.  Do you really think every game needs multiplayer?  Most people tend to stick to a select few multiplayer games and learn them rather than skip around to every release.  A game like Mirror's Edge doesn't need multiplayer and it would have likely had a negative impact on the game.  I'm still angry that Kojima Productions decided to include multiplayer in MGS4 when they should have used those resources to add more gameplay to the single player package.

This type of attitude is precisely why so many games end up going the sandbox route and delivering LOTS of average gameplay rather than a refined experience.

The backlash we are seeing here is, I believe, one of the reasons why series like Sonic the Hedgehog have gone down the crapper.  Sega is scared to death to release a short game and, as a result, ends up tossing in a lot of extra modes and slower paced characters just to increase the playtime.  Games Mirror's Edge and Sonic are not slow paced by their very nature.  With a game like Gears of War, the developers can get a lot of mileage out of a single room.  With a game focused on moving forward constantly, the player will have crossed the equivalent of 10-20 rooms in the time the player may have completed that single room in Gears.  The gameplay space still needs to be created and that requires time and money.  If Sega weren't so concerned with play length perhaps they would have actually attempted to create a true Sonic game.  I mean, in the Genesis titles, each stage could be cleared in about 1-3 minutes and the games could be completed in under an hour.  If they were to approach those games with a modern attitude, they would have to greatly extend the game.

This obsession with "length" has resulted in so many games that could have been great failing to live up to their potential.  They either include extraneous multiplayer modes that nobody will play or suffer from lots of filler material that ends up dragging the entire experience down.  Unfortunately, the amount of work necessary to create a game like Mirror's Edge is just as significant as many other longer games.  The fast paced gameplay, however, has you covering more ground at a faster rate.

I'll have to side with Dark on the length issue. I beat maybe 5 games a year, out of how many games? Most games I buy are at least 20 hours long, and a small minority of them are even memorable. So whats wrong with a short game, if it manages to trump 80% of the long games out there? Im not saying this is Mirrors Edge, mind you- I just get tired of the length argument.

I think its a really crappy way to judge a game. Multiplayer? FUCK Multiplayer. Would you believe that I actually hate the focus on Multiplayer? I hate how its used as a crutch to replace actual effort in the realm of proper game design. I think the worst trend are these games like Little Big Planet, where the "REAL FUN" is the people who paid 50 dollars making levels and sharing them with people. What the fuck. Or there's the very real situation of C- games getting a free pass cause it "was fun last night with everyone". You know what, MOST things are fun with people, it doesnt make the game good. Fuck multiplayer.

Me? Im avoiding mirrors edge cause there are parts that are apparently extremely frustrating.

I don't mind long games unless they are artificially lengthened with bullshit fetch quests are reused objectives.  I would much rather have a 5 hour game of constant new interesting sections than a long game that ends up getting stale.  I actually like the approach Fallout 3 has where the main story can be finished in under 10 hours, but if you're like me and want to see the whole world, you can put upwards of 50 hours into the game and still not be finished.  Personally I think the best length of a game is around 15 to 20 hours, maybe closer to 15.
