The mad king was a Targaryen.

do they ever get into the past of the series? because I'm a bit confused about how things went down

like, how did Robert (?) become King when Jamie killed the previous one? sounds like the previous bloodline of white haired people, and the mad king (?) were all butchered.  And Robert was a soldier with Ned, and some Starks were killed by the mad King or something?

Ya the mad king killed Neds father and brother.  His sister also died, who was Roberts love.  Can't remember exactly why the rebellion started but it was because the mad king was mad.  Robert became king because his family was the closest in blood to the old rulers.

It started because Ned's sister ran supposedly kidnapped by Rhaegaer (sp?) Targaryen, who was Daenarys' brother, and Ned's brother along with Robert started the war.

Spoilering speculation that's almost considered a given:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
she wasn't kidnapped but ran off with him instead, and Jon Snow is their child, not Ned's bastard

The spark of the war happened at a tourney when Rhaegar Targaryen, Dany and Visery's older brother, won the jousting tournament and gave the winner's rose to Lyanna Stark instead of his own wife. At the time Lyanna was betrothed to Robert Baratheon, and he was sitting in the audience.

Some time after that Lyanna disappeared from King's Landing, and word spread that Rhaegar had kidnapped her. When Brandon Stark, Ned's older brother, heard the news he rode to King's Landing with some men to demand his sister be returned. The Mad King arrested them all, then sent letters to the north demanding their fathers come to court and explain themselves. When they came, including Ned's father, they were tortured and killed, as were the sons. Afterwards the Mad King sent letters to the Erie demanding John Aryyn arrest Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark, and hand them over to King's Landing. Aryyn had fostered them both through childhood and refused, instead calling his banners. The Starks and Baratheons eventually called their own banners, and the civil war broke out.

The rebellion won and Robert, who was a distant cousin to the Targaryens, was proclaimed king.

edit: here's the history of it including battles, if you want. No spoilers for future books

I wonder how far the show will go in regards of how she's abused in King's Landing. We'll probably get a preview in ep10, but in ACOK she gets slapped around and shit. Dunno how having a 15-16 year old girl abused like that will play out on television.

Could be one of the best finales ever, but I'm worried about something specific

spoiler

The dragons...given how average some of the CGI has been thus far, I'm not too enthusiastic right now. Sure the CGI backdrops have been great thus far; the Twins looked excellent last week for instance. But this is going to be a living CGI character (well characters). I really hope they don't do it exactly as in the book, with the dragons breast feeding from Dany. Even the best CGI couldn't make that NOT cheesy imo.

If the dragon looks like this

I won't be disappointed. That's from a 10 year old film.

the fuck? who are you people

In some ways the show regurgitates the book's dialogue while handicapping the scope, both of its action and world building. I have no gripe with that; I realize a show couldn't possibly match the novel's scope with a $60 million budget, and years before the pilot came out we were told it would be more of a character driven drama than some balls-to-the-wall fantasy epic. But it makes it impossible to compare the show to the novel.

The writers have done a good job filling in blanks for new viewers like Etoilet, but there's so much else that's often missing or quickly glossed over. And I'm not a fan of some of the more ridiculous attempts to shoehorn exposition into scenes, using sex to distract viewers.

Regardless, the show is good, and the last few episodes have really seen it elevate to impressive heights. I must admit I almost teared up last week when Robb emerged from the Whispering Woods; seeing Catelyn's emotional reaction+that soaring music was a sight to behold. I've probably watched that scene 10 times. It doesn't happen like that in the novel, where things are more bittersweet. The show is full of good changes/improvements like that, but there are also ones I don't like

Well, he is a terrible prose stylist, and there is a fuckload of it to read. That's kind of a serious handicap. All the books do well is plot and character. That's plenty, but the show is doing a great job on those fronts too. Plus, it doesn't take forever to get where it's going.

Great ep.

Good epilogue for a story that didn't have a conclusion :P  Did a nice job wrapping things up following what happened at the end of last ep.  Season 2 seems like it should be awesome.

Going to start reading the books once I finish up the book I'm currently reading.  By the time season 2 airs I can probably get through at least the first 2 books, if not the first 3.

Holy shit @ the finale. They fucking nailed it. I went in with a host of reservations and fears, some of which I had since the show was in development, but the creative team put them all to rest tonight. Definitely one of the best season finales I've seen.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't help but think back to the day when Catelyn was recast, and how many of us freaked out over her appearance. The actress has been wonderful all season, with tonight being damn impressive and heartbreaking. The mixture of sadness and rage on her face tonight was quite stunning. That emotional tension flowed through the rest of the episode as each actor and actress turned in great performances.

I'm quite impressed with how many of my favorite scenes from the end of the book were portrayed. The King of the North was quite impressive, although I didn't like the change in Catelyn's reaction; it's my favorite moment out of the book series, and overall I thought they did a damn good job. Tywin's scene with Tyrion was great; Dinklage has been amazing all season, and Charles Dance was quite a welcome addition to the second half of the season. Finally, the dragon scene was done perfectly.  The dragons looked pretty damn good; I had feared they would look cheesy. Damn Dany was perfectly cast.

nice finale

Dany has been awesome and redeemed was what was the most boring part of the previous episode.

Though everything right now hinges on a character turn for prince bratty and that kind of frowns me. His character feels like a heel turn instead of a natural product right now.

I loved that Varys/Littlefinger scene. The Prycelle one was good too; it was fun seeing him pretend to be a feeble old man in front of Ros, who must be a spy for Littlefinger. But I feel that scene could have been placed in S2 instead.

We'll see the comet in S2 so I'm not worried.

Book 2 spoilers:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tyrion's storyline. The chapter where he sends the Lannister guard to escort Frey back to Robb then he accosts Pycelle about betraying his trust and accusing him of killing Jon Arryn. Man that scene right there the culmination of some good as storytelling. When Tyrion is going on saying how he told Varys one thing, Littlefinger another thing and Pycelle the truth yet Cersei somehow knew of the truth my mind was racing trying to remember the previous chapters. I spent a good amount of time trying to focus my attention and remember things because I knew they're going to be important but man I didn't catch that he was telling them different things. BUT! I Did catch that he saw the Tears of Lys in his collection and I remembered that someone.... (Pycelle himself?) suggested that tears of lys may have been the poison. I called that he was involved right then and there so. The stuff a little earlier about the reveal that Bronn has been looking for a thief, a poisoner, a mummer and a murder was kinda lost on me. I know that Bronn has been recruiting sellswords but that kind of blind reveal went right over my head.

After a relatively average launch of 2.2 million viewers, Thrones continued to edge higher in the ratings all season. With its season finale, Thrones hit a number HBO has been targeting: 3 million viewers. Adding the show’s repeat at 11 p.m., a total of 3.9 million viewers tuned in. The show continues to average 8.3 million viewers when you include all repeats, DVR and On Demand viewing.

Guess those readers pledging they would stop watching after Episode 9′s shocking event couldn’t stay away?
Quote
And in the UK, Digital Spy reports that the episode drew 667k viewers on Sky Atlantic, to end up as the second highest episode to date (the premiere delivered 743k). The UK numbers have been up-and-down all season, so I never know what to make of them, but the good news is even the lows have been higher than just about every other Sky Atlantic show.
http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/06/season-finale-sets-a-ratings-high/

Impressive ratings growth all season. After such an amazing finale and DVD sales next year, S2's debut could be very big. Although I do hope HBO decides to release the DVD this holiday season, which would break tradition; Boardwalk Empire just came out on DVD iirc
