I can upload volumes 20 - 33 later.

Looking over a few scans, it seems my respect for null was pure nostalgia. Their translations are almost off the mark as other OP translations. For example, a quick browse through a random chapter exposes that they translated Hatchi as Hati and Bellamy (yes, named after the famous pirate) as Benami (yes, named after the music games made by Konami like DDR). Oh boy.

Yeah, it's sad but the first half of OP manga is horribly to moderately badly translated.  It wasn't until people realized the series was OMG.BEST.MANGA.EVER that more legitimate groups decided to focus their effort on it.

legitimate? The translations are still average.

Hey let's not translate the word nakama cuz it makes us look SO SO SO SO cool!

Legitimacy!  :lol

Ok, the nakama thing is there because it's longstanding and has become an essential part of One Piece.  It's like if they came in halfway through the manga and changed Luffy's name.

I think the translation is pretty good.  I read the Japanese chapter first and then the US one each week and one of the groups (I don't follow which group is which) does a good job.  As good as a "professional" manga translator would do.

I was first exposed to One Piece manga via Viz manga in 2003. In that they use friend.

So when I got to the fansubs/xlations, the whole "let's not translate words that could be translated" thing was homo.

I still see why it's so essential. Replace friend or comrade with nakama and you have basically the same result. Only mega japtards care about "nakama being true to the spirit of One Piece".

One Piece - Ep 422

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The fact that Ace says,"It doesn't matter to us at all. Because Luffy and I unfortunately have the blood of the world's most infamous criminal in our veins anyway." makes me STILL think that the fact Ace is Gold Roger's son, and not TRULY Dragon's son, to be a total copout.

But then, the translation Funi did isn't exactly accurate either given my decent grasp on Japapapa

holy shit this owns, even if about 120 chapters near the beginning were atrociously translated and the quality was horrendous

but now i've gotten to the point where names are actually spelled right (shame, i was enjoying the adventures of 'Rufi D. Monkey') and it's possible to tell what's going on during fight scenes! (well not really, but now it's not just a bunch of tiny artifacted speed lines)

Quote
Japanese moviegoers who see this year's One Piece Film Strong World will receive the "0th volume" of Eichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga. Oda launched his manga about the young pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine 12 years ago in 1997, but the manga in the upcoming "One Piece Kan-Zero" bonus gift will depict the world of One Piece of 20 years ago. In the real world, Oda was a junior high school student 20 years ago when he conceived of the earliest concepts of the pirate manga that would eventually become One Piece.

Good chapter.

Highlight was when we discovered Luffy's ULTIMATE POWER and a realistic reason for why he's going to get through this situation despite being shown to be severely underpowered compared to the other participants.

Lowpoint was the Kuma army.  I'm never a fan of mass produced enemies in any form of entertainment.  Because it just gives the author an excuse to waste pages on characters fighting personality-less generic enemies.  See the end of Gundam OO for a good example.  But here I'll admit that the pacifista/kuma/vegapunk thing has been building for a while and it makes sense the government would roll them out here.

Interesting to see what happens with the broadcasting.  If the government gets their way, this whole battle won't have a huge change on public perception and bounties and Luffy's status with the world.  Which would be frustrating and not satisfying to the reader.  So hopefully at the climax of the battle someone other than the government will flip on the broadcast and show the world what's going on for realz

That chapter was pretty badly translated.  Mihawk and the other dude aren't finishing their fight, Mihawk says "Let's continue this duel another time", and the other guy says "It's in the best interest of both of us to do so".  I'm guessing because they had to move or get pacifista'd, so they're both retreating.

Yeah, that one's a lot better.  The other thing that bugged me about the earlier translation was that they didn't get that the traitor's name is squardo or squado or something (aka, the title of the chapter), which means they totally messed up the 2nd to last page when he shows up.
