I fought the first boss for nearly ten minutes, used my meager supply of supplies in two seconds, and got totally owned despite blowing through a ton of special move. Worst RPG ever. tri-Ace needs to die in a fire.

I figured that's what the problem was. Never bothered learning blindside because the battle tutorial was taking forever and I just wanted to PLAY the game.

But let's get serious here for a minute and bring in some Real Talk. Mass Effect is way better than Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

It's frightening, but that's kind of the point. Plus, I mainly stock the good stuff with only a handful of the seedier stuff, so it's all cool.

I'm still in the Star Ocean 1/2 mindset, where's it's all pretty much button-mashing with a few special attacks thrown in. But I've got it going now.

Yeah, but it's a game about a terrible has-been rapper (yes, I don't like much rap, but most rap fans don't even like the guy). SO4 is an RPG with an awesome battle system, cool locales, and complex item creation/skills systems. Fuck, I'd rather play the Wu Tang fighting game for PS1.

vesperia did it, why couldn't the technical masters at tri-ace achieve it? i know i know different visuals styles, but they should have done SOMETHING to get the battles out of sd territory

I'm sure if they took on the simple visual style, it could have been done. But Lighting plus detail and environment obvious takes a toll.

Unfortunately, this is true. Texture work is okay, but the resolution isn't all that great and they lack a lot of the flashy mapping seen in other games. AA is non-existent as well. Frame rate chugs sometimes in the field.

The only aspect of the graphics that I've been impressed with from a technical perspective is with some of the larger environments where you can see a lot of things off in the distance.

It's possible that while watching these films, the japanese may have understandably got the idea that all fictional "American" heros have stupid names (or at least the ones in the 80s). About six hours in and I'm really loving this game so far. Yeah, the problems are still there. Yeah, the graphics still aren't more than slightly above average at best. But, I just blew through a 3 hour session like it was nothing and I'd be playing more but I really need to take a break for a while.

One of the things that I like about SO4 is that it has a bigger emphasis on the scifi aspect of the series. Whereas in the previous installments there's some scifi stuff and then you get dumped on some backwoods planet in the middle of nowhere, this time around you actually have the ability to travel to different planets and interact with another space-faring race.

Got this and Yakuza 3 today in the mail and the graphics are both are irritating. Goddamn Japanese developers learn how to fucking program or stick to making your DS rpgs.

The choppy framerate/slowdowns on the map, the PS2 looking battles, the shimmering in the cutscenes and just overall blockyness of everything in SO4 is ewwww. I love that the textures are sharp, but everything else is a mess and the lighting is just screwy. The camera is sooooooooooooooooo bad too on the field.

Also the lack of music in most cutscenes reminds me of SO3 cutscenes which were terrible. Rpgs are supposed to have MUSIC during cutscenes, not dead silence outside the characters speaking and some monitor beeps.

Gameplay seems ok. I haven't played a Star Ocean game in 6 years or something since SO3 first came out in Japan in like 2002. I don't remember how SO plays, so I'm re-learning it.

This game is growing on me, but is it normal for the first boss (the tentacle crab on the beach) to have taken like 10 mins to kill when normal enemies die in 15 seconds? Like it wasn't a hard boss, but I kept doing sight off and comboing him from the back doing rush when I can and I'd only do like 15-20 damage per hit and my other party members were doing like 10 damage per hit and giving how long it took for him to die he must've had like 1000hp. Was there some trick I was missing? I really don't want all boss fights to be loooong battles like that.

the graphics are pretty shitty but the gameplay is sooo good. thankfully the story doesn't seem to be total trash like so3's was. it is still not very good but at least it's bearable

and the VA is decent. considering some of the complaints i was expecting it to be just as bad as IU's was

The problem with the graphics besides the alaising is that everytime you exit battle the framerate is shit for the first 1-2 seconds on the field again. Since you are getting in and out of battles ALL THE TIME, it's kinda annoying looking.

I haven't really noticed that either and I'm playing it off the disc.

Also, most of the boss battles have only taken about 5 minutes for me. But I've done some level grinding, so that might be part of it.

I'm playing from the hard drive. Everytime I get out of battle and on the map and hold forward, the framerate is choppy for the first second and then it's fine. It's like it's streaming the field back in.

I just beat the first boss and I'm fucking loving this game... much better than 3, combat feels so awesome, and it's addicting with the battle bonuses and attempting some of the battle trophies. Yeah, the environments are low-polygon and blocky, but the lack of much load time, palettes used and the texture detail more than make up for that. Then again I don't give a fuck about graphics in games.

Bebpo - after chipping off enough of the first boss's 'shell', you'll see a glowing blue spot on its side. Target it and you can do like 50-100hp of damage. Edge and Reimi were around level 7 when I beat it.
