Furnace Room Lullabye is one of my favorite records of all time. I saw her in Tacoma a few years ago and she performed Thrice All American and South Tacoma Way. It was killer.

Finally listened to XXX, but I was tired and fell asleep. I liked what I heard though. I'll give it another listen before the day is over.

A friend of mine asked me to list 10 rap albums from 2011 better than Wale's and J.Cole's, but then she started shooting down most of what I said because they weren't considered to be albums or they weren't retail releases. Made me realize that most of the best music that I heard this year weren't official studio releases. And that J. Cole and Wale's average albums will actually get some nominations next year.

Oh yeah, my rap album of the year right now is either Section 80 from Kendrick or L.A Riot from Thurz. Well Done from Bronson is somewhere up there for me.

Last year I specifically left a mixtape (Friday Night Lights) off my best of lists, arguing that it didn't qualify because it wasn't an album. But given the direction of music lately I'm not sure it's particularly logical to do so; a mixtape of new, exclusive music is certainly an "album" by today's standards.

Conversely, my AOTY is a mixtape: House Of Balloons. And my hip hop AOTY is a mixtape as well: Section 80.

I would also agree Cole's album is quite average, and it would be easy to make a case it's not a top ten hip hop release. It has some of the worst production I've heard on a major release this year; just empty, boring production. I was listening to Take Care yesterday, and while I'm no big fan of the album there's no question the production is good. It sounds like a full, lush piece of work that has a consistent sound sonically. Whereas Cole World feels like a handful of forced club songs (that don't bang) mixed with piano tracks, some horns here and there. It's not a bad album, just disappointing. Dude needs to either take a lesson on EQing drums or get a good producer to handle his stuff.

That's how I feel, but I'm guessing she meant shit that would be recognized by award shows and shit. I don't know why though. She listens to more mixtapes than I do.

El Camino is pretty great. Doesn't quite reach the heights of Brothers for me -- I miss the bluesy, downtempo numbers, and there's nothing here as nearly as good as their cover of Never Give You Up -- but it's probably the most consistent thing they've done, and certainly the most "fun", beginning to end.

That's mainly what I like about it. And that the sound is mainly guitar heave, not pianos and a bunch of other instruments like Mylo Xyloto (not knocking it, I actually liked it).

I think I've told this story before, but The Black Keys are pretty great – both of them are from Akron, the city I grew up in. I interviewed them for my highschool newspaper before they got huge...I think 10 AM Automatic had just been released. They live in Nashville now as well, and I see Patrick Carney at Harris Teeter every once and a while. We catch up pretty regularly. Really nice, solid guys who happen to make great music.

Undun is pretty damn good. You can really tell it's an album they took their time crafting. I heard Questlove had Phone re-do his verse more than 10 times, and Blu was kicked off the album after refusing to re-do a verse as well.

I can't say I like some of the singing on the album, and a couple of the guest verses are annoying but overall it's solid. I just wish The Roots had another member who matched Questlove's talent and ambition. Yea they have a pretty good guitarist and keyboard guys, but I still would like to see something more daring from them. I miss Hub

i had written off PJ Harvey's 50 Words for Snow initially as none of the songs grabbed my attention as i passively listened to it but having played it on a long car ride, my opinion has completely changed--love it. it's like the complete opposite of PJ Harvey's White Chalk, which i feel has alot of similarities from the structure to even the instrumentation but the big key difference being in tone, one being blinding with its light while the other nearly suffocating you with how black it is.

Watch The Throne isn't bad. The problem is every other Kanye verse is dumb as hell. Jay-Z actually drops some nice verses, especially on New Day. The production is great overall

but The Joy shits on every other track; Pete Rock cotdamn. I'd give Q-Tip the second best song/beat on the album (That's My Bitch). He's been working with Roc Marciano all year, can't wait to hear that shit next year, plus I hope Tip releases a solo album. The Renaissance was great
