Now 6 hours into Avernum. Game rocks, love the oldschool feeling with the modern streamlining. Also yay, a western rpg where magic is actually useful right from the start.

Once my new notebook arrives I'm going to attack my Steam backlog. First up, the indie games I have, Tribes Ascend and Modern Warfare 3.

i've been playing that unchained blades rpg that xseed has recently brought over,it's okayish, plot goes that you play as an uber powerfull dragon and he decides to go bother the goddess of the world so he can discover who's the strongest in the world, but the goddes get pissed at him and send him all back to level 1,he then meets a wacky golem prince and a white mage chick with the power to petrify men and mostly important boobs big and bouncy enough to be featured in at least 3 article about japanese videogame being sexist and after that you simply dungeon crawl in first person a-la wizardry

the game is definitely harder than your average rpg but certainly less hard than what you'd expect by a first person crawl, the main gimmick is that there is a monster collection aspect but you don't use the monster directly in battle, instead you pair monster to characters and they help the character in various way like absorbing blow and doing follow up attacks

the most important part about pairing monsters with characters is that every character has some skills that they can use only when they are paired with certain monsters,so for example the main character is fire-themed and he can use some of his fire shits only when he's paired with a fire monster and an attack monster,if you want to use the more powerfull healing spell you have to pair the healing chick with an healing monster and so on

the big problem with this system is that catching monsters is a huge pain in the ass, each time you strike a monster there is a chance he'll get "unchained" and once he's unchained you can catch him but more often than not you just end up piling all your attack on a single monster and as such he gets unchained only to get killed by the next attack before you have a chance to recruit him,you can try to solve this by attacking multiple monsters but then the chance of the monster getting unchained is so small that in the end you just end up taking more damage for no reason

even more annoying,in some part you have to partecipate in a special battle where all the monster you caught partecipate in a big brawl,so if you don't have enough monster to clear the brawl you have to walk around like an idiot hoping to catch more

there is also a system where you get charisma points depending on how you did on battle, the less damage you take and the more quickly you killed the opposition, the more charisma you gain, when you gain enough charisma, your charisma level ups and you can pair yourself with more monsters/more powerfull monsters

leveling up is a pretty standard affair, when you level up,you get skill points which you spend in a sphere grid like board, most character are themed (so for example the golem is all defense stuff, and the main hero is all about attack and such) some of the more powerfull skill can only be gained when you fill certain parts of the board so you can't go cherry pick

there are a lot of monsters in battle's in fact,it's even possible to get attacked by up to 15 monster (currently the game didn't go over 10 though) when there is a big group of monsters they are usualy lead by a single monster in the center,if you kill the master all of the minion gets affected by a random status ailment which usualy buys you enough time to kill them all before things get nasty

and uhm... really it's sort of an unimpressive game but at the same time i've played worse,i guess someone like borys might dig it

Tried playing Dungeon Fighters Online. If I could play it like a coop beatemup, it could be pretty fun. Been doing stuff in Guild Wars for more Hall of Monuments points. Going to play some Super Meat Boy later.

Currently playing:

A good 15 dollar game. I think there is still a lot of work to be done in increasing the random quality of dungeons, encounters, and enemy types. You generally run into a lot of mutant animals, or dudes with guns. There's still strategy/tactics at play, but they dont change often. Most of the customization, adaptation is found in the implants, boosters, special items, and team make up. I've actually gone with TWO tanks and a healer, using booster implants to essentially create a DPS tank- which is kinda nice.

The game is huge, but again- this means not a whole lot until dungeon variety improves. The game is a work in progress and future content updates are included in the initial price so im not really sweating it. I've put almost 10 hours into the game so far, but hit a minor wall as I need to upgrade my booster implants to make my rank 15 dudes strong enough to even survive in the next major area.

The setting and writing is quirky and fun, the music is great, the game has a great look to it- the gameplay is interesting but needs improvement, but they're still working on the game so i'll stick around while I continue exploring the world.

Finished the first minor arc- its ok; pokemon mechanics aren't deep enough to translate to a turn based strategy game- so theyve introduced some stage mechanics to compensate, so far the game hasnt been difficult for these things to matter. Its ok I guess- probably wouldnt recommend it to folks; good news though- hard to find this game cause lol Nintendo.

Game is cool- I am having some major issues keeping track of quests n such, but the combat system is crazy fun and the pawns are actually useful- except I still have no clue how to tell them to run the fuck away from things.

I totally borked a quest last night though- went into a bandit camp and started attacking them on site as every single bandit up to this point tried to kill me. Turns out I was supposed to talk to them- something I realized after I threw the bandit leader on my shoulder and hauled him to a cliff and tossed him off. Even after finding and hauling him back to his camp he just wanted to kill me- so I had to reload my save to the last INN visit. HAW HAW god damnit.

My friend let me hold his copies of MGS4, God of War 3 and Uncharted 3. What have I been playing? The Streets of Rage Collection on Xbox Live. :lol

I'm just now realizing how great the third game is. The 2nd has the best soundtrack, but the gameplay in the 3rd feels so quick and fluid. Currently getting all the game specific achievements and then I'll go about beating them all.

Xenoblade - after 145h, finally beat it... great ending with an awesome plot twist too...
Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - after 65h, finally beat this too. Another interesting plot twist for the ending, just when you thought everything was wrapping up nicely...
Ax Battler: The Legend of Golden Axe - just started playing this game, it's a frustrating Zelda 2 clone, but nice visuals for Game Gear
Penny Arcade ep 3 - I never played the other 2, but this game is great so far, Zeboyd makes some games with interesting refinements on oldskool RPG mechanics. Great graphics too.

i don't know what they changed in the XBLA version other than spiffier graphics but the original spelunky is awesome

anyway i've been continuing that unchained blade game,i finished the first dungeon (i had a lot of trouble with the boss until i learned a limit attack that basicaly shaved 80% of his total HP in a single blow) and after you finish the first dungeon the game hands you a new set of adventurers and then tell you to start all over again! no items,no money,no caught monster and the new character all start at level 1 too... it's kind of a low blow but i don't really mind too much, the new party is all female and include a snotty princess,an idiotic fox girl and a black mage with some weird skeleton bones coming out of her mantle, she's also the least animu character in the whole game,i mean compare

apparently each character was created by a different artist which i guess explains why 2 characters that look completly different are featured in the same game

Tried two F2P games on Steam, Tribes Ascend and Blacklight Subtitle.  Both are very decent, and I'd keep playing Tribes if I could wrap my head around all the F2P stuff.

I thought Tribes would be another hackneyed attempt like that other F2P differently named ski n jetpack shooter from years back.  It's actually pretty awesome and feels like Tribes 2.

Blacklight is Call of Duty with a cyberpunk/future aesthetic.  Other than the hacking system and mechs, it's pretty standard stuff, which is impressive for F2P.  My experience with F2P before this was one of those badly made ones for a steam gift...crimecity or something.

I didn't find the Witcher that sluggish (apart from the swamp area and the grid-like movement of Geralt), I mean it's no more sluggish than say the original Mass Effect or Fable 2...

finished chapter 2 and 3 of unchained blade, the second boss is a lot easier than the first one, even if you are down one man,the boss does only 2 attack per round (as opposed to the 5 attack per round of the first one) and never pull off any special trick out of his hat... the third chapter begin with AGAIN a 3rd party, once again,no monster,no equipment, level 1,best of all the third party is a one man party consisting of a lone kickass swordman (he even uses katana) which make this chapter incredibly annoying,i must have hit the game over screen at least 5-6 times, the third chapter doesn't end with a boss but it has an equaly annoying final fight since you fight in a 6 vs 1 brawl and you don't have any group attack so you have to handpick each enemy singulary,in the fourth chapter you finaly regain control of the first party and unlock a lot of nice new toys

one thing i didn't notice with all the party switching is that the game has an item creation system which i didn't use because the item you could made all sucked so it was just a waste of money and time, well turns out that by doing a lot of junk items you unlock better stuff and coincidentaly now that i got my first party back they have access to better ingredient so they can actualy take advantage of it

I started to wear on it by the time I hit world 5... not really a fan of the whole, bite sized levels with a billion ways to die... sometimes it felt more like luck than skill getting through the levels. I much prefer traditional platformers...

Been completely absorbed by Divnity 2: DKS for a week. So much fucking jank at times, bosses that should have never left QA (if there even was any), but the open environments and movement combined with Dragon Form dicking about is too much fun.

Legendary: The Box.  First thoughts were "Yeah, this is definitely by the people who did Turning Point." It's not horrible,  though reminds me of a competent C-level OG Xbox shooter. There are some really neat ideas here with the variety of enemies. In the hands of a better dev it could have been a really awesome game instead of just *shrug*.

32 hours into EA's 2006 Godfather game. I'm still surprised at how engaging this game is, despite its ugliness. And it's quite ugly, throughout the entire world. The cars are pretty nice, for generalized period vehicles, and there are a few nice downtown areas, but there are these interstitial areas which are just mind-bogglingly warped "building hallways." They feel entirely unnatural. But the gameplay is pretty tight; extorting businesses and getting the maximum payout was interesting. Now that I've finished the main storyline though, that minigame succeeds automatically, which is kind of sad, but I imagine with 80 shops still to bash into submission, it would have worn thin pretty soon.

beat Borderlands.  got to level 36 doing support soldier class.  I had a lot of fun, but became pretty much unstoppable around level 20 or so.

Still playing this, with a friend in local co-op, but we've got it on two different TVs and using XBLA now. It's "local," in that we're in the same house. We almost tried system link, but because we are on XBLA another friend was able to see us playing and jumped in.

This new guy has a mess of high-level characters, but he joined with his lowest level character. This made the level harder on us, because the monsters were beefed up, but this guy couldn't do any actual damage to them. It was still pretty fun!

Ax Battler - just got to the final "password" hut, I have resisted the temptation to save scum but if the end board gets too annoying I just might, just to get this out of the way. A mediocre Zelda 2 clone for Game Gear. Some nice ideas, but it's a bit frustrating.

Sylvan Tale - very good Game Gear action RPG. You get different monster transformations like the Wonder Boy games and the graphics are really good for the platform. Only thing that's bad about it is the annoying status screen music. According to the walkthrough, I'm halfway done.

Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 3 - Zeboyd's best game yet, even if a few of the fights drag on for a bit too long, and the game is a bit lacking on side content like their other games (there's an arena with a few tough boss fights and... so far that's it). Up to chapter 9, a descent into hell or something. Seems like I'm nearing the end.

Nice to play some less time-consuming games after Xenoblade and TITS.

been continuing unchained blades... in chapter 4,chapter 1 and chapter 2 party joins all together so now i can finaly switch party members around even tough the chapter 2 party is 5-6 level behind chapter 1 party.i've also been recruiting tons of monsters thank to my new super charming power, plus i got one special monster which i defeated in a special fight which is extremely stronger than the rest which has made that annoying monster battle's a moot point

uh other than that there isn't anything much to add,it's not the most various game, new dungeons sometimes introduce new gimmicks but otherwise it's always the same crawling affair

This is my second attempt, I remember feeling overwhelmed by the games insistence on having the gamer change almost everyones class to meet the needs of certain individual battles. But I've been sticking with it. Everything outside of that is atrocious. Every conversation touches on some sort of deep existential bullshit that makes me want to die.

I'm gonna fire up Test Drive Ferrari: Racing Legends and see if it's any good. Still plan on getting to Lollipop Chainsaw and Max Payne 3 eventually.

unchained blades is getting pretty boring,my party decimates anything with just normal attacks, the boss of chapter 4 was so weak i didn't even need to heal, the difficulty curve has took a huuuuuuuuuuuuge dip while the dungeon just become bigger and bigger,i'm having flashbacks of all the half assed rpg on psp i've started and dropped somewhere in the middle like brave story and crimson gem saga
