started playing Gears of War 3. Disappointing, easily the worst Gears game. I'm sure it's great if you have some friends to play the campaign with, but single player it's awful. The campaign is obviously designed with multiplayer in mind, with constant bullshit incapacitating spam attacks from enemies. Since your AI teammates can revive you there is no tension or challenge. It's basically Horde Mode with a story, a real shame  :( Glad I rented it instead of buying.

Mechanically it's the tightest Gears game of course, but since I don't have a posse of bros to play with the game is worthless to me, since Epic didn't seem to wan't to offer anything to solo players. I know the first two games were better in co-op, but they were still engaging, fun and challenging as a single player experience. So far Gears 3 is not.

no but it's on my "desperate to play list". I have been on welfare for like 6 months so gaming budget is more or less non-existent. I was gonna rent it but my local video store doesn't have a copy. It is cheap already so I will get a copy once I get paid for some work I have done recently.

One of the first things I buy when I get a job is a fucking gaming PC for dem cheap games.

Currently I'm running an iMac with these specs

2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

2.5gb RAM

ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB

can't run shit

I've been playing Final Fantasy 4 DS, after being turned off from being turned to stone outside Baron Castle.

Now that I've forced my way in, shaft to tip, I am enjoying this version of the legendary classic. The voiced segments liven up a lot of scenes.

GIL is super hard to earn... you get like 60 GIL a fight. lol.

well after playing Gears 3 some more it's not as bad as I said. I just need to rustle up some friends to play it with. I might round up a few copies and dish them out to my IRL friends so we can have some co-op fun. I'm sure the game really shines with more people.

i just bought a HOTAS flight stick and played some RISE OF FLIGHT. graphics are pretty good. it seems like enough of a sim to be challenging but not too bad where it's annoying.

also tried Microsoft Flight which doesnt seem to have much sim in it at all. Not as fun since it only has two boring planes.

Playing Borderlands with no friends :fbm
The downfall of co-op has been the recognition that my standard friends are incompetents who can't remember or recognize maps, let alone process simple mission details.

I played it co-op with two friends and both bailed at New Haven. There was UFC or something to play instead. And they were the ones whining to play co-op.

Playing solo to finish through the game I recognized the lack of their abilities, but I also recognized the lack of panicked sprinting back to warp zone, inability to approach enemies strategically despite demands they hold ground, and refusal to go bug a pack of enemies because we were 200 xp from a level up.

And don't get me started on them attempting to drive around Stillwater or Steelport. Though this is a theme with people I know as they can't navigate in real life either.

And then there's seedless watermelon!

Sylvan Tale may be one of the best Game Gear games, yeah I know it's not saying much... but it's a pretty neat top-down action RPG. Where you change into different animals with unique abilities (like a slow moving turtle who can bash shit with his shell) to maneuver through the landscape. The world seems very small and the dungeons don't take very long, but there are a couple parts where things get challenging, and everything is interconnected/exploration gives you the choice to do things out of order. Graphics are some of the best on the platform too.

finished chapter 5 of unchained blades, the boss actualy made me break a sweat,he had several turn in a round,an hit all spell which hit fairly hard and a full heal spell so i had to abuse group attacks to get over it,i think i'm getting near the end cause chapter 6 is titled "THE FINAL WISH" and there isn't much room for more plot to happen anyway

i really like the boss in this game because they are HUGE sprite that are so big they don't even fit the whole screen, they each have several parts that you have to break and each part get it's own attack,so group attack are incredibly usefull as they let you damage multiple parts

since i got really bored of unchained blades,i've been trying gungnir, stop me if you heared this,an evil empire called menacing empire name holds in subjugation the land of fantasy name but a group of rebels called heroic rebel group name has decided they had enough and decide to kick the empire ass,but before that the hero meet a mysterious girl called bland name and discovers he has the power of mcguffin name

man SRPG adlib is no fun i tell ya

so anyway being a sting game this game is full of weird rules and such which is what makes it interessing in the first place, there are a lot of gimmicks in this game, these include

1. character don't have stats, when they level up instead their carrying capacity gets bigger, which let's them hold more powerfull items, items give a character all their stats and skills
2. death is sort of permanent sort of not,it works like this,if a character gets finished by a really strong attack, then he's dead and you can't use him in battle's anymore, but if he gets killed by scrappy damage he retreats and you can field him the next battle with an HP penality, with enemies if they retreat you get a random item from them but if you kill them you can choice which one you want
3. there is a job system but there are no skills, each job just gets to hold different items, tough i fear this is going to make some jobs too similiar
4. each time you move, you gain tactics point, these points can be used to execute team attacks or activate special skills, but if you hold them some weapon get stronger so you have to balance it out, this also making holding out your position a bad idea as you constantly want to move around
5. at the start of each battle, you need to declare a commander, different commanders use different unit betters so say the hero is good at using archers while his brother is good at using knights, the commanders you can pick are fixed so there are some missions where you can't pick the hero and as such you need to balance your team
6. when you give a character a weapon he initialy suck at using it,but as you keep using it,it's attack power improve and when you have used it enough you can unlock additional attack which comes with area attacks, more damage and status effect
7. each attack has a number between 1 and 4,and each character also has a number and as such if a character keep using an attack with which he's matched,he'll gain some bonus like "improved chance of dealing status effect" or "more damage" and such, the number also dictates if your character can counterattack or not,as you can only counterattack if your pair of shoes and the attack number matches
8. spread over the map there are base's,holding more bases let you hold more tactics point, better yet it gives you more range when it comes into executing team attacks
9. each character also has an element, this is dictates by his initial element's,his equipment and mostly amusing the terrain where he's standing,so if you go into water there's a chance you'll automaticaly turn from neutral to water or from fire to neutral
10. there is an ATB a-la final fantasy tactics (game also takes the idea of spell charging from final fantasy tactics and as such is it possible to get out of the way before a spell goes off) but it works with it's own spin, you see when your turn comes you can use ANY character so if you want you can even solo the whole map with a single character, the catch is that after you use a character he has to cool down for a few unit of times,if you use his turn again before he cool's down, his max hp get a penality like if he retreated
11. another amusing way in which it breaks FFT,you can jump down from a height higher than your jump rating but if you do so,you hurt yourself and lose your turn
12. speaking of unit of times, you can instantly call your turn by spending tactics point = how much you had to wait+2
13. there are no job change,if you want new unit you go in a mercenary guild and simply throw money at it,if you want a unit in particular you can get it by wasting one of your weapons otherwise what you get it's random and you get a penality too if you don't find anything you want,so for example if you want an archer you can pay 10,000 gold and waste a bow

and uh... i don't think i'm missing anything, the cutscene too feels a little inspired by final fantasy tactics,i think it's the background that do it for me,i mean watch

i'm really liking gungnir, which is weird because i usualy hate SRPG,there is so much shit going on,everytime there is a new battle i spend like 5 minutes just thinking into how i can reshape my party, and the best part is that since there are no character stat and everything is decided by the item you hold,i can just introduce a new character in my party without any grinding effort

the AI is a little bit dumb tough,i blocked a bridge with a knight and the AI just stood there dumbfounded while i was nuking it's unit with spells

a while ago i had 2 classes that both used daggers one were the assassin's and the other were the tricksters and as such i had no idea why there were two of them, well it turns out that trickster have special access to dagger which let them place traps around so it's another element added to the game

the weapons have tons of special effect too, right now i got a claw that make an enemy physical defense skyrockets but it 0% their magic defense,i guess this can be abused in a map where the enemy has a huge defense or such

Sounds very decent.  I'm planning on getting it regardless since it'll be on Steam.

Just curious, is a day/night cycle in the open world hub? In videos I've seen it has the GTA4-hazy look.  I don't know if that's a constant or there are moments with clear blue skies or swinging at night.

moar gungnir! one of the stage is an assault at a castle, the stage begins with a pretty powerfull boss unit starting near you who attacks you first,on top of the castle there are 2 succubus who just chills out,but as soon as night comes they swoop down from the castle and start charming your guys so you have to beat the boss before the succubus come or else you are screwed!

the next stage has a pretty fun gimmick too,the whole thing happens on a chasm and most enemy unit have attack that knockback you,but if a unit get knocked into the chasm,he falls down below and die instantly,i got knockback attack from the previous stage and i made a massacre simply by pushing people into death and abusing scramble (the ability to call your turn without waiting it to come around) when you push someone into a chasm the game declares "GO TO HELL!" :lol

Mighty Switch Force OK game.  Great music.  Levels 1 - 15 are pretty fun.  Level 16 rips off that mechanic from Mario Galaxy where blocks are controlled by the beat, only here it's badly designed.  It's a bad level and as part of the game complete.  It's weird too, since the game is about speed running and most stages have a 'par' time around a minute thirty.  Level 16's part time is 5 minutes.

Bulletstorm  I can't tell if I'm enjoying the game or taken by the compulsion to complete the skill shot dictionary.  I'm sure I'd still enjoy it if I weren't aiming for buttholes and wieners for m-m-m-m-m-multiplyers.  Kicking, lashing, and sliding are all fun to do.  The weapons are cool (haven't unlocked the last one yet).  I remember controversy surrounding the writing or story or something.  I dunno.  After Saint's Row 3 games it's hard to consider comedic/overindulgent set pieces as anything but tame.  Only thing that bugs me is that it does that forced walking thing and you can't skip it.

Wizorb It's Breakout with a classic jrpg aesthetic, currency, and magic/mana.  I like it but it gets into the aggravating parts of Breakout where there's a final block your ball keeps missing.  It's why Shatter letting you curve the ball made it so much more fun to play.  Wizorb has some abilities  that are tied to mana, so sometimes it helps, and others you're just as screwed.

It really is. I think too many people tried to play it as a third-person cover shooter instead of third-person stealth RPG and got frustrated when it wouldn't work that way. Not without it's issues, of course, but it did some thing really well.

That said, I don't think anyone should be praising your taste for being months to years late on awesome games, but I was prepared to let that slide.  Was.

DX:HR is getting boring fast due to lack of variety, lack of quests, and too much emphasis on stealth. I love stealth, but when I play an rpg I want to do things in a multitude of ways. Skyrim kind of renders DX:HR obsolete months after its release due to its very existence.

On the other hand, there's Witcher 2, which manages to weave tight narrative with great combat and OPTIONS. Now that's a real rpg, which I can't say for DX:HR.

Still going through Final Fantasy V, I'm on world 3 so I'm near the end and should beat it this weekend. Playing FFV alongside western rpgs really exposes my modern tastes. I still like jrpgs, but even though in many ways they're mechanically superior - and even then, games like Witcher 2 show that wrpgs are stepping up to the plate - they're just so fucking simple. I know I'm saying this in regards to FFV, a game released in 1992, which I adore, but it's just how I feel. It is taking me forever to go through a game that takes me all of sub 20 hours to complete.

Borderlands also owns.

Holy shit. White Knight Chronicles 2 ups the difficulty to insanity-level near endgame. Way to go Level 5.

The Witcher 2 made me pregnant.  :-[

I think the biggest problem you're having, Himu, is that you've decided Deus Ex is an RPG with action/stealth/shooter elements instead of vice versa.

At no point in that game did I think, man, this is some fine-ass RPG.  I was like, I AM AN INVISIBLE WALL-PUNCHER THAT SPITS BULLETS OUT OF MY ASS, ALL SHALL BE TASED IF THEY DAST SO MUCH AS SPEAK TO ME!

Oh. I always thought of DX as an rpg so..

Oh not you too  :'(

For some reason, I am the opposite. Like, I seriously struggle to get through western RPGs. They take a while to get going, but usually at the halfway point - when you have the confidence to explore the world a bit and take on lots of quests - I'm really into it, and then towards the end I get so burned out on the combat (and it doesn't help that a lot of western RPGs like to railroad you through the final parts of the game with nothing but constant linear combat scenarios leading to a mediocre ending). Japanese RPGs I find are just the opposite - start off with a bang, slow middle parts, awesome end parts when all the story-related shit hits the fan and the game really tests you on exploiting the gameplay systems to their advantage (tri-Ace postgames for instance).

The focus in each is completely different, even if there share some similarities. Also, DX:HR is one of the best cyperpunk worlds in videogames, while Skyrim is Viking fantasy.
