So I did the leveling stuff with hallelujah -> re-pep -> electro light -> hope-you-can-kill-them-before-they-run and gained about 3-4 levels just from normal enemy fighting while waiting for them to get pepped in the manglegrove flight area with occasional metal hands and then pulled that off and gained another 3 levels in one battle. So around 47-48 now instead of 40, which is probably fine for Act 2.

I skipped most of the act 2 quests because the story was moving, so have like 30 quests to clear up and then will finish up this act.

I finished Act 2 at Level 60, the final dungeon is great for grinding, I had 8 Bunny Tails on so I was getting the rare drops to save on money and materials.

My electro light only spawns 2 metal slimes with red eyes and 1 liquid slime w/red eyes. I mostly use Erik's guaranteed critical attack to kill the one worth the most xp and just hope to get the others, but usually at least 1 runs away.

Let me know if Act 3 is worth it. If it's just normal DQ post-game I'll probably pass on doing much. If it's like a full act with a story like Act 1&2 like it's part of the main story I'll probably finish it.

If you need multiple pepped-up characters, you can bench the one that's pepped up and it'll preserve the pepped up state. That makes those quests a lot easier.
Also act 3 is somewhere in between a typical DQ postgame and a fully fleshed out story. IMO I wish the game ended at act 2 but that would be a bit too dark for DQ... act 3 goes by a bit quicker than act 2, especially if you grind.

Yeah I swap out a character anytime they are pepped to reserve them for later.

But if you just need some characters pepped, like a sidequest I'm doing now where I need Sylvando pepped. It just feels like it takes foreever. I guess the fastest way to get pepped is to take damage? So just fight the highest level enemies you can and sit and defend until you get pepped?

The whole pep system is stupid and is my biggest complaint with DQXI. So many interesting skills all locked behind this dumb RNG and then you use them once and that's it for the battle probably unless it's a really long boss fight. The pep quests are terrible and it just makes the skill trees and character build options feel really small since a lot of their unique stuff is their pep attacks which you just can't depend on and make a strategy out of in real combat.

I know DQ8 had a similar system, but I don't remember it being like this.

fwiw, I am enjoying DQXIs. Definitely one of the best jrpgs in the last decade. I think some stuff could be better, but overall it's pretty good. Amazing graphics, great cast, great story stuff, fast battles that are fun, good music.

It's probably like a 9/10 to me so far.

It's hard to find high quality jrpgs anymore. Outside DQXIs, the only jrpgs I'd put at 9/10 or above in the last five years are probably FFVIIr & Persona 5. Been moving more to wrpgs honestly.

I downloaded Cultist Simulator the other day on my new phone and.... I have no idea what I am doing, but I am weirdly enjoying it.

Until shonuff gifted me his Xbox One, I had been strictly PlayStation 4 for the previous console generation. So I never bought Rock Band 4 despite playing the hell out of the first three games on 360. All of my hardware is for Xbox platform, and all of my DLC is on Xbox.

Now that I have an xbone, I had a copy of RB4 sent from America, but still worried that they DLC might not download on a Japanese Xbone.

The installation process is weird. I guess disc installs have a “minimum install” scenario where you can play most of the game. But I couldn’t download anything new until it’s finished doing it 15 GB patch and install. When that finished, I looked through the menus and tried to figure out where all of my DLC is. It told me it had successfully downloaded 13 pieces. I have significantly more than 13 songs on this series.

Then I found the separate menu header that said exports! There was only one header, for RB3, but it had a error where it just lands on a blank dialogue. After looking it up online, it turns out I waited too long and the RB3 Export was disabled last December. I missed it by 6 weeks.

In-game, I see a massive tracklist, and it shows me that I have purchased a good portion of the library, but it hasn’t automatically downloaded anything. I download a couple tracks, but it is slow and requires click through on several menus and system dialogs in every case. I’ve got some thing like 400 pieces of DLC.  I go back online and look for more information, and find Harmonix’ own how-to for automatically downloading all previously purchased DLC. Unfortunately, it is for a previous version of the X bone interface, and is inaccurate.

I think I finally figured it out though, so whole bunch of stuff is downloading now. We will see if the game finds it properly.

DQXIs - I've spent the last hour playing roulette while listening to podcasts for this dumb quest, which apparently is the hardest quest in the entire game. The bunny girl says she feels like someone is going to win soon and I've probably done 100 spins since and gotten within 2 spaces a few times but otherwise nothing.

Only reason I am wasting my time on this is I read if you win the jackpot for this quest you get so many coins you can buy a ton of pep pop and then clear out all the pep sidequests pretty instantly for the rest of the game. So will save time on that end. But yeah, this is terrible. Bunny girl obviously has a strange definition of "soon"

Also apparently most people flag this is an Act 3 post-game sidequest, but somehow I unlocked it in Act 2 and was going down my quest list clearing all of them and got to this and so this is where I've been for an hour.

Took me about 90 mins, I started going and doing 10 runs per table in case the RNG luck of the day only applied to a specific table. Ended up getting the jackpot on the 10 coin one so all I got was a measly 30,000 coins instead of 1,000,000 :|

Plus it turns out they don't even sell pep pops until Act 3 at the Casino so doesn't matter.

Got all the non-retro quests done outside one on Mt. Hoji since I haven't gone there yet and a single quest that is still greyed out . Started back on the retro quests, just gotta clear the ones I have out and then all caught up and ready to do the rest of the Act II story. I forgot how insane the encounter rate is in the retro quest monster areas. Holy water non-stop there.

*ok* finished up all the retro quests too, back to main story! I think I burned through like 40+ quests today jeezz; gained a few more levels though and got a few good pieces of equipment so not bad.

DQXI has made me realize that part of DQ's DNA is just RNG even though I dislike RNG. Like between the Pep Powers, the Casino stuff and the enemy spawns that only appear after a certain number of normal enemies killed (the killer robot one in the frozen fjord took me like 20 mins of killing dozens of them). I get the feeling DQXI's probably a slightly better game if you just ignore most of the optional stuff and just do the main story in the acts.

Where do you get that quest? I don't even have that... maybe it's locked until I finish one

There's a girl in Octogonal. She didn't have a quest marker (bug?) but the quest book showed in white and said there was a girl looking for a statue and I was able to get it.

Oh and forgot the all party RNG turn loss attacks and iirc from past DQs, the final bosses with instakills. Yeah you can mitigate this all to some degree, but out of all the rpg series out there I'm starting to feel that DQ thinks RNG is fun and it's a part of the franchise design.

I finished Ys 9 and went right back into Ys 8 to finally finish it.

They are good, but both have the same problems. Too much story and game diversions.

Falcom games look mediocre and the story scenes are stilted and boring. I also simply don't think they write good stories. It all feels like trite and bland fantasy stuff. Ys 9 is a bit more interesting, but it takes over half of the game to get there.

Also playing as Dana in 8 and regular Adol in 9 is just boring. I want to be out there on the field with my party running around, doing what these games do best. Not your attempts at mixing up the game. These games should be shorter, not longer.

It does kinda suck when you don’t know what the boss attacks are before going in.

Plus the bosses have a pattern of doing all party turn loss status effect x 2 attacks in a row. So if they miss your whole team the first go around they get a second shot.

In the end I’ve only died once on a boss so far this game so it’s not a big deal, just annoying. Really depends on how far act 3 takes it for the tougher boss fights + rng.

There are plenty of status effect rings and that one Ribbon-like one but you really need them all 3-starred for full effect and tbh swapping accessories around to make yourself immune to the bosses RNG flavor of choice is sort of boring.

Act 3 is great. Lots of "clean up before the final battle" and it helps close the story out. Imagine quitting at Act 2 thinking you beat the game. Lmao

Act 3 has all the best fights in the game playing on normal though. It was fun finally having a reason to use pep powers.

For status effects, if you don't have the right items you could also use the Snap Crackle Poof spell for immunity to everything. With the right setup you can get 3 copies of it on turn 1 even.

Hopefully you don't need +3 gear. I usually aim for +1/+2 on first attempt and only rework if I don't even get +1. Pretty rare I get a +3 and don't want to put in the effort. Plus getting the mats and stuff. I think the forge is pretty fun as long as you're ok with not perfecting your gear.

Also probably stupid but I blew my entire game's savings at the casino turning it into chips for that roulette jackpot quest yesterday. 200,000+ coins. But catching up on sidequests, especially the retro quests I got back like 75,000 so I still have some money. But mats can get pricey if I need to be doing a lot of crafting in post-game.

XB1 is still pretty straight forward in this regard.
It basically goes Break -> Topple -> Daze. And then there's a bunch of buffs and debuff Aura's like defense, tension, poison, speed etc. .
The start of the game is a bit heavy on the 'Break -> Topple' mechanic because you can't hit the Mechon otherwise. That is less of a problem once you unlock Enchant and finally the anti-Mechon weapons.
The game opens up more with additional party members allowing for different strategies. Shulk is just the all-rounder, Dunban is offensive, Reyn is defensive, Sharla the healer, Melia the mage, Riki the trickster etc.

XB2 is much more convoluted in this regard. Having to perform specific actions with Rex or his different blades, chain attacks with or without blades and that robot doll thing that works completely different from any other character in your party with chips you need to level and equip. Then you also have Pyra/Mythra swap later in the game. I think about 30 hours in you still get new tutorials. Dunkey even made a video about it

DQXI S - Got the master sword (nice cutscene) and got a bit into the final dungeon for this act. I like how the crystals are used to shortcut the tower levels. With the master sword cutscene I can see why people compare DQXI to Zelda a bit.

Also what are some good damage dealing attacks for the characters? I've just been using greatsword with the hero and unbridled whatever as my main attack but at some point I noticed that Jade's 7 hit multifeet does even more damage so right now she's my main damage dealer. Erik is alright with divide into critical claim.

Serena/Rab can do like 1/2 that with their biggest spells

Sylvando is my main healer with hustle dance and is good for some buffs like Oomphle on Jade/Hero and Rab using Sap on the boss for max damage for Jade/Hero, but in terms of damage output Slyvando can't do jack shit. Then again might be my fault because I've been using Sylv as a whip build and whip doesn't seem to have any good abilities in this game. I guess if I respec'd to 1H sword maybe there's a good damage 1H sword skill in there somewhere.

for Knight guy I just use the attack that does like 100 damage to him in exchange for heavy damage output with Axe and it does about the same as Jade/Hero damage.  I'm using axe because I like having a shield on him so he can tank/buff & heal if needed

Basically no one does any real damage in boss fights besides Hero/Jade, so like 2 characters hitting hard, 1 heals, 1 buffs/debuffs every round.

Then again I've become so overleveled none of this matters anymore. Those retro quest bosses add a shitload of boss xp every quest. I'm hitting 57 with my highest characters at this point and all the enemies are just running away from me.

Finished Wither 3: Heart of Stone DLC and am on the Blood and Wine  DLC.

Honestly, it's the first time for me that an expansion has been better than the original game. Honestly, I'm damned impressed.

DQXI S - Spent an hour forging gear at the final dungeon so not only really overpowered at lvl.60 party (so many King Metal Slimes in this dungeon) but also really overgeared haha. Have like +3 weapons/armors on everyone. Respec'd skills too to get the highest damage attack for the Hero.

Btw, can we talk about how lulz it is that everyone in the party is dramatic and expressive in cutscenes and the Hero always looks like a mentally distinguished fellow.



Anyhow got to the actual final boss save for the act. It's already pretty late so if there's gonna be a bunch of cutscenes and stuff might leave it for tomorrow.

Also I really enjoy the costumes for this game. Really detailed and like 3-4 per character at this point. This is a game I'd probably have paid DLC money for costume outfits for the cast. Ironically the only cast character I don't have a costume on is the Hero because his all suck. There's basically DQ8, full armored knight zzz, and the circus outfit which is fun but too goofy. So he just looks plain and everyone else is stylin'

Ok, finished Act 2. Yeah, that would have been kind of a weak place to end it. It's fine but so far the "story" of the game is pretty basic in an 8-bit/16-bit way but with modern gfx and great presentation. The characters and town vignettes are really great though.

Plus the whole Edwin's Lantern arc outside Gallopolis was really weird and basically a prelude to Act 3 dealing with it.

Looking forward to getting started on this arc. I read somewhere that the expected levels are like lvl.50 by the end of Act 2 and lvl.70 by the end of act 3. So you don't have to grind to 99?

Is it like there's an Act 3 w/ending (lvl.70~) -> post-post-game after (70-99 extra dungeons/secret super bosses)? Or is this all just Act 3?

Oh and getting that ultimate blade skill for the Hero was pretty worthless. It eats an insane amount of MP and somehow does less than Unbridled Blade? Is that because it's based on lvl/character stats whereas Unbridled Blade is based off Greatsword stats? For the end of Act 2, Jade was still doing the most damage with multifeet while on Oomphle. Was hitting about 1,000-1,100 damage per turn and Hero was doing like 600-800 damage.

Finished Wither 3: Heart of Stone DLC and am on the Blood and Wine  DLC.

Honestly, it's the first time for me that an expansion has been better than the original game. Honestly, I'm damned impressed.

Blood and Wine is even better. 

Didn't like the plot nearly as much (mostly because the 'big bad' is an idiot), but the environments - the environments.

I can agree on the plot, but as closer to wrap up everything was pure bliss.

Wow wow wow. Y'all weren't kidding. While Heart of stone sorta felt like an extension of the story, Blood and Wine was like a whole additional game. The city and everything you could do. An amazing experience. And I love how your choices actually matter. This is so much better thought out than any 3d WRPG I can remember.  And the feeling of accomplishment and resolution at the end? with that 4th wall break at the end?
