Just did the Beelzebub fight in DS.  That was pretty nasty.  First real trouble fight for me.  Had to just bum rush the dude and kill him in 2-3 turns before people started dying left and right from bugs popping out of them >_<

I like how they were able to transition the epic BIG SCARY DEMON fights from normal megaten into SRPG form.  Works really well and they're still cool bosses.

I was just playing Soul Calibur 4 with my cousin and the fucker wouldn't stop grabbing. 4-5 ATTEMPTS EVERY FUCKING ROUND. I seriously contemplated breaking my arcade stick over his head.

If I had seriously got into fighting games when I was a little kid, I would've got into a lot of fights over cheap shit like that. I'm still pissed off right now. He took all the fun out of the game.

I could have sworn you can throw escape in this game.

You can, but when you can throw with A+G or B+G, you have to guess which one you're opponent is gonna do to escape it. I end up eating at least 2 throws a match because of this shit.

It's depressing, it has everything I should love about a game and the atmosphere is incredible but there's just something missing for me. It doesn't help that all the weapons you find early are fucking useless

That last Bel Beliot guy map was holy craaaaaaaaaaaap hard.  I had to cheap it and skip the long switches way.  +7 & flying support skills ftw.  Still was a total bitch getting to him, but when I finally did after an hour I one-shot'd him.

Guess I'm at the final boss now.  Hope it's nice and easy!   :lol

Bah, after almost 2 hours of fighting on the map I got to the point where the battle become unwinnable at Bel Berith again just before the very last form.  This boss rush is retaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarded.  I run out of MP early on and then I'm dead.

Guess like SJ, I'll be grinding for 10 hours tomorrow so I can see the ending :\

The way I see it, Tekken has gone through 3 versions.

Tekken 1-3, Tag all play pretty similar, with each one improving over the last
Tekken 4 plays uniquely.  Has a Virtua Fighter style 3d feel.  Lots of good ideas, although not all of them worked.  Like VF3 it's the black sheep of the franchise.
Tekken 5-6 play similar in a new way that is more like 1-3 but with some of the ideas from 4 and some new stuff.  Combat feels more balanced.  Less about back forth juggles.

If I had friends who were into Tekken I'd probably like it almost as much as VF and really explore the depth of it.  But since they don't, I only play Tekken at a basic level and it's fun for a few weeks each time but then it gets boring and I drop it.

Tekken 6 is supposed to be extremely balanced, despite its huge roster.

Also you might see people saying Tekken 5 is better than Tekken 6.  This is bullshit; what they are actually babbling about is that Tekken 5 DR Online on PSN runs at 1080P, while Tekken 6 (home version) does not.  IIRC it's not even a true 720P game.  Graphic whoredom in full effect-- Tekken 6 only builds on Tekken 5 and has more characters and moves.

Tekken 6's resolution is all over the place. On the 360, if you have motion blur on, it is sub-hd. If you turn motion blur off, it is 768p with no AA. On PS3 it is always sub-hd, but if you turn motion blur off you get 2x AA.

I'm playing Yakuza 3 and Kiryu is helping orphans solve their problems. Seriously, I need to put someone's face through a fucking windshield stat or I am going to lose my shit

Yeah this is the downpoint for the game. Although I don't think these orphan sections are bad, they certainly aren't what I'm playing Yakuza for.

Ok, once I actually stopped and leveled a bit in the final leveling map, got some good skill cracks and made some high level demons the final map was pretty normal.
Once you get:
-MP regen after each battle
-Revive
-and Heal everyone to max + status ailment

on all 4 characters...it makes it a lot easier!!  :P  Before with my underleveled party of low-level demons I was always just rushing the boss and trying to kill it in a round or two before the demons caught up to me and murdered me.  With those skills/spells your party can just take it nice and slow and fight anyone in their way and heal back to full afterwards.  Wasn't too bad although the very final final form went crazy when he was down to about 1 hit left and instant wiped 2 of my chars, lol.  But then I killed him in 1 hit after and got the ending, yay.  Did the Amane path because I accidently told Gin and Kaidou to fuck off at the last minute and lost their paths.  Amane's no Haru, but she's cute enough.  I usually go with whichever girl is cuter when choosing my megaten philosophies.  Except for SJ, because the blond in that game was wtffff by the end.

Overall I thought the game was really great.  9/10 for sure.  Not as good as SJ, but pretty close and up there with the better megaten spinoffs.  The story was interesting although it got a little too ridiculous non-stop plot-twisty near the end.  The characters were cool although some of them got annoying at the end.  The visuals/music atmosphere rocked.  Character designs were sooo good.  And the gameplay did a great job at taking everything that makes megaten and transferring it to the srpg realm.

Things I would like to see fixed/changed in the sequel:
-Skill crack system.  It's kind of cool, but it's also kind of dumb because it makes you play like an idiot sometimes because you don't want to kill someone else's target.  Need to streamline it a bit.
-Better UI.  Other than search function, the UI was crap.  Like is there even anything that shows how close you are to getting a skill set bonus?  I remember when it was introduced they said it's a meter that fills or something but I never found it visually.  Just would randomly get skill sets.
-A little better branching consistency.  By the end there was a lot of repetition in conversations that I'd already had with someone else and the MC didn't acknowledge that.
-maybe some actual multi-screen dungeons
-A game timer

But overall it was great.

Now I'm ready for ACE R tomorrow, yay!

Also, everyone said that Devil Survivor is really hard for the first 3 days and then really easy for the next 4.  Yet my experience was that the game started out really easy and the difficulty gradually increased each day, building up to the final day which was pretty damn challenging.  I'm not really sure what I did differently, but it seemed like a balanced game with a straight line difficulty curve.  While you got better demons/spells, as the game progressed the enemies started getting REALLY strong and able to 1 hit KO your demons or sometimes your character + stopped having weakness + started reflecting half the elements, etc..etc...Toward the end you had to be pretty careful about not getting ganged up on and killed between your actual turns.  Seemed fair to me outside the final boss rush which was kind of nuts.

I died a couple times on Wendigo in Devil Survivor, but after him I never had any problems. I think I died once on the final mission but other than that it seemed like the pretty standard SMT difficulty. I can't remember what path I did though... maybe Naoya's?

"Like is there even anything that shows how close you are to getting a skill set bonus?  I remember when it was introduced they said it's a meter that fills or something but I never found it visually.  Just would randomly get skill sets."

The meter for this is hidden. It's a nice bonus but I think I only made use of it two or three times.

I also liked that you had to kill the target with the skill you wanted to crack with the appropriate character. It adds another layer of strategy imo and makes it more interesting. I like Devil Survivor more than Strange Journey, but it's an apples to oranges comparison really.

Actually, after I finished Devil Survivor I tried to go back and play TWEWY since the games are so similar thematically, but I still couldn't get into it. I should finish that after I'm done with Portrait of Ruin (just finished the Pyramid map tonight, and it was actually pretty good. More stages like this and I might flip flop a little). The soundtrack for TWEWY is pretty godlike though.

Your DS experience mirrors mine, Bebpo.  I thought it had a perfect difficulty curve.  I never thought anything was too easy or too hard (except for the last boss where I was woefully underleveled).  I didn't need to grind until the very end.

A Farewell to Dragons

It's pretty rough around the edges [for example: there are noticeable typos in the dialog] and it's pretty clear that the game was made on a budget since there are no real cutscenes and no voiced dialog. There's also a distinct lack of music, maybe 3 or 4 different tracks so far. But, it taps into that Dragon Age/Baldur's Gate style of RPG that I do so enjoy, so I can't be too hard on it as long as nothing about it is particularly broken and so far I haven't seen anything that is. The main problem is just one of not really breaking in new ground on any level, it's generic through and through. It does, however, add in a little steampunk and I am of the opinion that adding in a little steampunk to your sword-and-sorcery fantasy is never a bad thing.

I tried starting a new game+ in Devil Survivor, but it reminded me why I don't replay rpgs unless it's like 5-10 years later and I've forgotten the plot.  Having to tap tap tap A through sooooo many lines of dialogue just kills it for me.  Unfortunately with the way the dialogue choices are in the game, there's no way to just entirely skip all the story parts on replay.  I got about halfway through day 1 but it still took like an hour and was boring.  Battles are boring because you're overpowered, story is boring because there's so much of it you have to tap A through.

I'll just read the detailed summaries of the other routes from one of the faqs.  Who is the hidden boss added on new game+?

you know it's so frustating how the cpu seems to have like 7-8 heroes and they all go around just waiting for you to leave a city defenseless so they can enter free

Booted up tried to play Fable 2 but I quickly got reminded why this series is so mediocre and stopped. It's almost impossible to pick up a game if you stopped playing. You can't remember or find out what you own. What side quests you have done. What books you have bought or haven't bought. The map sucks, etc, etc. Just can't stomach all that to finish it.

Finally got over the hump and I'll probably be able to finish the game now within a few days. For what is supposed to be a mainstream RPG this game is so poorly explained. I constantly have to look up shit on the internet to figure out how to do basic stuff. Very non-intuitive.

Going back to Deathspank, can't seem to find how to progress past the swamp.

I've got the three orphans up the swamp. One was with the leprechauns, one was a brat with the demons who wanted a mess of stuff, and one was more or less a freebie. I've unlocked the map up to the swamp, but can't figure out what I've missed to move further.

After about 5 hours you'll never want to see it again. Great setting, poor game. It's the opposite of say Alpha Protocol which works well despite it's flaws. Every function of gameplay is terrible in The Saboteur

I hit that point last night, about 4 hours in.

The missions got to be too annoying.  Well, the missions themselves were straightforward, the problem was that the environments worked against me.  I had shootouts where in spite of having clear shots at Nazi soldiers, the game wasn't detecting their presence, making them invincible.  The hand to hand combat system and climbing buildings are almost pure jank, making sure they work against me at any moment.  Another instance for a mission with Skylar, she would refuse to get into the getaway vehicle.  She was trying to get in but despite having ample room to get in, her character would just frantically move by the passenger side door but not get in.  When restarting the mission, she got in just fine  ???

I really liked Red Faction Guerrilla, my only other experience with an open world game in recent memory.  This game had a much more interesting premise but it needed another six months of work.  Too bad, it could have been a great game.  I'm sending it back into Gamefly on Monday.

I dont know how they were going to top the massive firefight on the zepplin anyway.

Played the first hour or so of the original Mafia tonight in preparation for the sequel. It hasn't aged well graphically, and the interface is terrible (the map is shocking) but I think it holds up better overall than say GTA3. I really love the charm of the shitty cars, and love that they have a speed limiter.

Phantasy Star Gaiden on Game Gear... it's a real awful and primitive RPG. Some decent cutscene pictures for the system but that's about it. Random encounter rate is absolutely ridiculously high. Defenders of Oasis is much better as far as Game Gear games go.

I never cared for Borderland's MP anyway.  It might be different on consoles, but on the PC version if all parties aren't synced up with the same quest then only the host can actually progress in the game (outside of mob exp and random loot drops).  Pretty shitty imo.

Nope that's how console work. You can get credit for sidequests, but story missions is based off the host.

I dunno, some games come together at the end, and others fall apart after making a good initial showing. Assassins' Creed 1 was great at first, fell apart mid-game when it was clear it had run out of cards to play. I'd say most of the RTS games I play in singleplayer come into their own once all the units are available to use.

I never cared for Borderland's MP anyway.  It might be different on consoles, but on the PC version if all parties aren't synced up with the same quest then only the host can actually progress in the game (outside of mob exp and random loot drops).  Pretty shitty imo.

Really? Fuck that then, what a distinguished mentally-challenged game.

Which scene are you talking about? There's one toward the middle of the game that went on forever and I'm pretty sure it actually put me to sleep. :-\

Yakuza 2 is the best Yakuza game, no question. 2 >> 1 > 3

I can see people putting Y3 above 1 because of the gameplay improvements, but the story and characters in Y1 are way better. Kenzan and RgG4 seem to be well-received, but I haven't played them yet.

Oh, and speaking of Yakuza 2, guess who's back for Yakuza 5... (spoilers I guess)

Just 1000'd Dead Space and 200'd The Secret of Monkey Island.

Dead Space was fun, but it would have been a lot more fun if I used something other than the Plasma Cutter. Got really repetitive toward the end. I used the glitch that lets you duplicate items as well, so I didn't need to bother grinding through a second playthrough in order to max out all of my equipment. Game was fun though, bring on Dead Space 2. :rock

Monkey Island was really fun too. It was the first time I played the game and I thought it was pretty great, aside from the part where you have to grind a bunch of insults from the pirates. Will definitely buy Monkey Island 2 when it is on sale.

After playing Sam & Max Save the World, I was starting to think adventure games weren't for me, but I guess it was just Sam & Max that sucks.
