If you're at the part I think you're at (the part with the elevator right?) don't worry about the minions. Fight the Titans and ride them like a horse and THEN take out the minions while the titan is wailing and going batshit.

Fighting Poison Ivy and I'm starting to see a bit of a trend in this game. It relies pretty heavily on the "fight fodder enemies while some other annoying bullshit is also going on" design choice a tad too much.

Yeah, I don't mind enemy swarms. It's just when I'm swarmed with enemies AND trying to accomplish some other annoying task simultaneously (ex. every single boss fight in AA).

to address an earlier question, it's not that you suck, just that you're impatient (probably).

when dealing with crowds in AA/AC you really shouldn't be trying to beat on one guy.  just wait it out, dodge, counter, and pull off instant takedown moves when your combo meter is high enough.  for larger enemies, just dodge them.  those titans can even take out other enemies for you.

AC does a better job at crowd control because there's a quick way to use items in combat.  It's balanced by introducing new enemies that require different tactics.

The boss fights in AA were the weakest part of the game.  You can tell Rocksteady really took that criticism to heart for the second one, to some success.

AC had the best boss fights I played last year.

Just barely beat my old DOJBL score with 232m. I'm so inconsistent at chaining it's not even funny. I can full chain stages 1, 2, and 5, I can chain stage 3 in two separate bits, and stage 4 is a lost cause. A perfect first loop from me would be about 600m, but I can never chain everything in a single run. Guess I just need to keep on grinding until I've leveled up my skillz enough. :-\

RAGE. I like the game in parts, but a lot of decisions are really annoying. Like the INTENSE music, all the time. Why doesn't it chill out after I've killed everyone? And the enemies are always mouthing off about what they're doing, "Falling back!", "OH SHIT HE'S KILLED EVERYONE" feels very contrived and stupid. Sat in a multiplayer lobby for a while but no-one seemed to be playing. The whole time some horror movie string music was playing... I was waiting in a lobby, I'm not getting freaked out id! Just really annoyed. AI sucks in this game and LOL Insane difficulty: Enemies act the same and are just as difficult, you just take more damage. id has fallen so far. The gunplay at least feels good, it's a pity the enemies and scenario so far feel uninspired.

Bastion was good.  A lot of the praise was for the presentation (narration, music) and that stuff is neat.  There's some clever design too like these difficulty modifiers you can turn on for bigger bonuses (TWEWY does it, and the Kid Icarus 3DS does it too).  Problem is the actual action isn't great.  Combat is simplistic and boring and all the levels are walking down a straight path.  But more than the sum of its parts or something something.

yeah I've learned that my taste in games is pretty "refined" (for want of a better word) after 20 years of playing these things. I generally don't know wether I'll like something or not until I play it. Having 50 5/5 reviews isn't enough to sell me. I don't trust reviewers.

Well I've almost done everything in Vesperia now. The xbox is running on Auto and my characters a grinding out Fatal Strikes. I just need to farm a few more synthesis items and clear the 100 man melee for all the items, then tape down the left stick with Ba'ul for the world map marathon cheev, then it's speed run time.

Totally back on the JRPG dick now. Gonna get back to Last Remnant after I 1k this. Then I might try starting Infinite Undiscovery again, but the game is kinda ass so I dunno. I should get Resonance of Fate. I want to get 1000 on all the JRPGs on the 360.

Yeah, definitely get RoF!!! It's not too difficult to 1000 (I beat it on PS3 so I platinumed), it's just that the arena is a total slog. Rest of the game is amazing though...

I beat Brain Lord and Shatter today. Shatter was particularly awesome, due to its stunning soundtrack. It's a combination of oldskool Amiga-esque .MOD music, Daft Punk, and Anjunadeep-style progressive house, which really hits all my good notes. Gameplay is a fun, standard Arkanoid-clone with a few neat twists. But damn it's worth it for the soundtrack!

sweet, I'm just about to start Darksiders myself. Looks like a nice easy 1000 to boot.

Currently the Xbox is playing itself again. Got my left stick rubberbanded down with Ba'ul flying in Tales of Vesperia, for the 100,000 km world map achievement. Is good as I can get down and dirty with some REAL WORK for awhile. I'm going to make Shopify my bitch.

After that I just need to farm ~3k more Grade and I'm onto playthrough 2. I was going for Collector Book 100% in playthrough one, but one of Rita's weapons was only available for a limited time in Heliord, and I missed it. So boo.

Regardless, theres a minimal amount of shit to mop up playthrough 2 so I'm pretty close to 1000. What a great game! I forgot how much I enjoy postgame RPG shit.

from what I hear Darksiders is a 15 hour game with no bullshit. As opposed to a Zelda game with 10 hours of actual good dungeons, and 40 hours of chaff

and man this achievement in Vesperia is bullshit. This fucking dragon has flown around the world 300 times, word is that it will take like 5 hours for this bad boy to pop  :(

Rayman Origin

There's an off feeling to the movement and controls.  I think I'm too accustomed to the NSMB and DKCR platforming.  Rayman feels stiffer and doing the slap attack slows you down temporarily.  It's hard to get into that groove where you're rolling through the level.

Otherwise, it's great.  I really like how each level is broken into smaller chunks.  It feels like a mix between NSMB and Super Meat Boy.

Also, it looks amazing.

from what I hear Darksiders is a 15 hour game with no bullshit. As opposed to a Zelda game with 10 hours of actual good dungeons, and 40 hours of chaff

yeah, I don't remember Darksiders having much padding but the combat drags on.  It tries to be Devil May Cry and enemies take too much damage.  That was the main thing that bothered me about the game.

FF Theatrhythm demo

This is ....really bad.  Fuck.  I love FF Music and I love music games and I wish to Wada that they had hired Inis to do an Ouendan/Guitaroo-man style FF music game instead of ummm...whoever did this.

PROBLEMS:
1) You have to play entirely on the bottom screen with the image on the top screen.  This is a weirdly bad disconnect.  Should've had the game on the bottom screen like Ouendan.  Or not made it touch based and used the buttons/d-pad.

2) The taps per second on the higher difficulties are ridiculous.  It's faster tapping than even the hard ouendan stuff and you are CONSTANTLY tap tap tap slide tap tap tap and I felt like I was going to break the touch screen just from a few demo plays.  I would be AFRAID to buy this game and break my 3DS.

3) The biggest killer is that the commands you do don't really match up to the beats of the song.  It's a really weak effort and nothing like Rock Band/Ouendan/Guitaroo-man.

4) Also the graphic style and presentation make it seem like a $5 iphone game.

Even with Japan worshiping the ground FF walks on, I can't see this being a hit over there.  It just isn't particularly good or fun.  It's like they took an ok-ish mini-game from FFXIII/FFXIII-2 and sold it on its own as an isolated experience for $40.  passss

bebs continuing his theme of disliking a demo virtually everyone else has liked

Because in general, people like to gushingly praise over every demo made in Japan.  If it's on a Nintendo system than even more so.  If it's by SE than doubly moreso.

I'm huge supporter of the Japanese music genre.  Beatmania, Ouendan, hell even 3nd Impact seems legit.  But this isn't very good.  The commands should have been on the touch screen like ouendan and the motions are pretty nonsensical and don't go with the songs (sliding up/down/left/right/diagonals).  It's very amateur and everything about the game seems on the level of what you'd find on the app store.

Elektroplankton was cool, but it wasn't really much of a game.

The problem is, when you have a very limited amount of people with access to games on a niche system, people tend to like EVERY GAME and praise them all in order to justify their purchase and stealth brag that they can play these games that most people can't.

I mean, c'mon gaf says BOOB NINJA is a great quality game.

They also tend to be like 12 years old and/or weaboo/japanophile/company shill.  I mean FF Type 0 comes out and the ENTIRE OT is ungodly praise.  "THE BEST FINAL FANTASY IN YEARS" etc... then months later I come into the thread and say it sucks mainly and is a 6/10 game and the few people left pretty much agree with all my points.

Fuck me. I just started a DOJBL run from the beginning of stage 2 (with 32m points; ie. a full chain of stage 1), and played continuously to the end of the first loop, hitting every one of my chains and finishing with 531m points. But this score isn't completely legit because I started from stage 2. God damn it.

It's doodoo

I agree after having played the trial version.

Bastion's presentation is top notch: gorgeous graphics, great music and I enjoyed the narrator. The game just wasn't any fun to play due to the clunky feeling combat and I didn't like the whole floating island assembling thing. It would have been much better if it was a more traditional arpg with fields and shit, like Ys: oath in Felghana or something.

I started Darksiders and it's pretty great. The premise is ludicrous and corny, but the seriousness in which the game approaches the narrative makes it pretty endearing. They managed to hit the sweet spot.

The combat is simplistic, but quite satisfying thanks to lots of good gore and killing animations. I'm playing on 'Apocalyptic' difficulty and I've died a few times already. The game will be cake though, just gotta hunt down a few early Heart Containers and I'll be set.

Picked up humble indie pack 4 for my Mac mini, threw some 360 controllers with a driver and I feel like I'm back to gaming again. Shank is fuck awesome, even though I had to do some weird shit to make the pad work right. Bit trip runner is a blast and actually somewhat challenging, love that in games like it. Can't seem to get super meat boy to work with my 360 driver correctly.

Jamestown is an awesome little multiplayer shooter, if only one person stays alive you can revive your partner so I've been playing with the little dude and he's loving it. Gonna blast through it this weekend.

VVVVV looks interesting haven't played it much yet. Haven't even booted the rest yet. I'll probably start picking up any of these types of games that support the 360 pad well on Mac.

If it was a complete world, that would destroy the entire point of Bastion. You're unraveling the world like reading words on a page, as spoken aloud by the narrator. The world is opening itself up like a book.

I'm still working through this with the bro-in-law in co-op. It's good fun, and gorgeous, but you're right that the controls feel somehow off.

13-2 and I love it so far... I like the whole Noel being the last man alive, sent into the past to change the future plot angle...
