I beat Metal Gear 1 and moved on to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.  Holy fucking shit, this has to be one of the most advanced 8-bit games around!  It's basically 2D MGS1.  You all should check it out.  It's a little annoying at first because the "AI" is way better than one would think it could be for a 2D game and you really have to keep track of what's going on on your radar, which covers about 9 full screens at a time.  It's pretty amazing...

No spoilers plz, but are the "3 single player missions that = over an hour of gameplay" in the Assassin's Creed 3 deluxe addition worth $30?  ($50 vs $80).

I'm guessing no, but thought I'd ask anyways before I pre-order the PC version.  I guess you also get the season pass for that $30, but I'm going to assume it's going to be mainly multiplayer maps & skins and I don't play MP.

Those bonus missions are never story related. It would be complete bullshit. Even the DLC crap from the previous ACs werent really tied to the story. Just more of a "side-story"

Well, yeah I don't expect them to be story-related.  Just wondering if they were good missions or bad ones.  Like the bonus missions on AC:B the Copernicus missions or whatever were fricken terrible.

I tried finishing Miami Hotline but it keeps crashing on the same mission every time.

Booted up Borderlands 2 but haven't played it in a month and don't feel like i'm in it anymore.

Wanted to play Torchlight 2 but I kind of need to grind for a bit so meh.

Would like to play Walking Dead Ep 4 but my gf aint home and we play that shit together so got to wait till tomorrow.

Installed Dota 2 last night and played 1 game, then uninstalled that  :lol

All this make me want to buy the WiiU so I looked at the launch lineup and there isn't a single game I want to play either.

I'm playing Parasite Eve for the first time.  Good shit.

Man that game is awesome, the whole setting etc. I miss good ole Square. Maybe I should buy FF7 pc.

it is really awesome.  And the story is distinguished mentally-challenged in the best Japanese way possible.  I'm leaving NG+ and the Chrysler Building for later...but that looks like it'll be the best part.

After Parasite Eve, I beat the MSX versions of Metal Gear 1 + 2.  Metal Gear 2 still handily beats the shit out of most games today.   I was surprised to find that a lot of the lovable quirks from MGS1 were actually in this game first.

Now I'm playing MGS1 again, along with Castlevania Chronicles and SOTN for the millionth time.  Just ordered VR Missions.

:bow Old games :bow2

I dunno about that FF7 PC port...i just don't trust it!  I'll probably get the PSN version eventually.

Playing a mess of Toy Soldiers (original) and enjoying it a bunch. One of my friends who likes tower-defense games says, "it's not a tower defense game, it's an action game." Inasmuch as being able to take over a unit and start shooting Fritz when, where, and however you like, I can kind of get the distinction.

Also finding that Rock Band Blitz is much more fun than I originally gave it credit for. I find the power-ups can be specific to each kind of song used. It's weird, but Depeche Mode's songs seem to break my standard "win" strategy (Jackpot/Blast Notes) the most consistently.

Finished New Vegas. Such a fucking improvement on Fallout 3 in the story / dialogue department.

Old World Blues and Lonesome Road were actually the first two pieces of DLC I've outright purchased (if we're not counting GOTY / Ultimate / Whatever editions). Old World Blues was fantastic and I spent almost 10 hours with it. Lonesome Road was really linear and boring, but the dialogue with ED-E and Ulysses was worth the purchase. Watched a walk-through of Dead Money, and now I regret not picking that up instead.

Still not in the mood to continue playing EO3, so I'm thinking of playing Morrowind (after tinkering with mods for a few hours) or maybe Last Story.

I'm gonna play Peacewalker after 3 for sure.

I'm not sure what order I want to play them in.  I've beaten all the games already (except PW). so I was thinking of going 1, 2, 4, then 3, PW.   If I had planned it out, I probably would've gone 3, PW, MG1, MG2:SS, 1, 2, 4.

I'm a few hours into Resident Evil 4 (360 ver). I originally wanted to play through the entire RE series, but RE2 has a bunch of sound problems on dolphin and it looks like crap, so I'm just skipping straight to 4. It's the one I was looking forward to the most anyway, since I haven't played it in like 7 years.

Yup.  It's like they went "Hey, you know how Leon and Claire did stuff in Raccoon City and were chased by Mr. X?  Well Jill was there too!  And she got chased by Mr. X Nemesis!"

RE3 was still a good game, but it was disappointing that they didn't move the storyline or setting forward.  But Code: Veronica came out less than a year later IIRC.

You know, Sleeping Dogs has that problem that some GTA games have where you're only in cars for like 30 seconds at a time (usually more like 10 seconds) and so you hear snippits of songs on the radio but you never actually listen to any full songs.  I really like how in SR3 you'd spend longer time in vehicles moving around and get to listen to songs and how sometimes songs would play during missions.

Really all they need is a freaking ipod in these games that lets you listen to the radios while you're on foot.  I don't get why they don't do this.  You'd think it'd take a few hours to implement and make the radio stations a much bigger part of the game.  I found a couple of bands I really enjoyed from SR3's radios so kind of bummed I'm butting dozens of hours into Sleeping Dogs but I've barely heard any of the music on the radio stations.

Considered, and ditched, apparently:

Quote
What's good enough for Solid Snake was almost good enough for Niko Bellic.

But the creators of "Grand Theft Auto" have confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that a plan to give Niko Bellic a portable music player was removed from the game late in the "GTA IV" development cycle.

Snake has his iPod. Niko, as recently as a couple of months before release, had a cell phone that could play music from game's radio stations. Edge magazine mentioned the feature in its cover story prior to the game's release. But it was cut.

Instead, Niko can only listen to music in cars and a few buildings, pretty much the "GTA" franchise norm. So why did Rockstar keep it that way? Here's what they told us...

“Some people on the team didn’t like the music/mobile phone idea for various reasons, but they went back and forth on the idea until the very end," Rockstar spokesperson Darlan Monterisi explained in an e-mail on Tuesday. "This is VERY common. We do it in every game we make. We still prefer the balance of music in car and the ambient world’s noise on foot, but we are constantly reviewing this stuff."

It's not hard to see how the feature could divide any group of people passionate about "Grand Theft Auto," to say nothing of a development team that has thought deeply about how music functions in the series.

Niko Bellic is a modern man with a modern phone and many radio-enabled cars to drive. Should he have also had an MP3 player?
We'll have to see if they include on in GTA V.

They should suck it up and put it in there.  Their customers and reviewers doesn't care about artistic choices like the balance of outside ambiance and will think the ipod is a cool feature.

80% through the story missions/sidequests after tonight's session in Sleeping Dogs.  I need to stop wasting so many hours on the collect-a-thon aspect.  I didn't even do all the car steal jobs in SR3.  That stuff just makes the game feel long and draggy.  Love all the main mission/cop mission stuff and the sidequests ("favors") are pretty fun.  Just the suitcases, security cameras, lockboxes and races that are a bore (races are fun but 18 is a bit too many).  Will probably finish up the main story and sidequests next time I play and then decide whether I want to spend 5 hours just picking up collect-a-thon stuff for 100% or whether I'd rather have my time.

I guess I kind of like the collect-a-thon aspect in these games just because it's cool to see treasure chests and such while you're on your way to something and grab it (see feathers in AC as well).  It only becomes a drag when you're going out of your way to get them all for a silly achievement or self-OCD-satisfaction of 100% in some videogame you're not going to remember in a year.

Finished Sleeping Dogs.  Took ~22 hours and did pretty much everything 100%.  All the races, all the collections, sidequests, found practically every lockbox (missing like 1 in Central, 1 in Arberdeen, 2 in North Point and not gonna bother with a map and checking every location in the game just for some cheevs).  That's because it was all so enjoyable I didn't want to stop playing if there was something more I could do!

I'm going to start on the positive because while I have some complaints, the overall game was great!  It's extremely polished in almost every aspect of the gameplay and story.  The martial arts was fun and smooth, environmental attacks were great.  The gunplay was surprisingly awesome.  In fact, my favorite moments were almost all the pure Max Payne missions because the slow motion diving and chaining headshots to lengthen the slow motion gunplay was incredibly satisfying and one of the most enjoyable shooters I've played in a while.  Driving controls were great and I had about as much fun doing all the street races as I did in Criterion's NFS MW.  The chases were fun, and the side activities were usually enjoyable.  The city was nice looking, especially in the rain and at certain times of day and it was a pretty meaty game length and I liked that it had a conclusion and was not TO BE CONTINUED IN SEQUEL.

What I especially enjoyed came down to 3 things: The writing, the missions, and the sidequests.  The writing & cutscene direction & voice acting in the game was fantastic!  Yeah it's still not exactly high brow cinema, but compared to GTA or most "gangsta" videogame stories, Sleeping Dogs is a huge improvement.  The game did a great job at making character's that you could actually like, even if they're gangsters, and it really helps because suddenly you're not totally detached from the story because it's about a bunch of despicable jerks you couldn't give a crap about.  Wei is a great character and the family aspect of the gang ties the player to the cast.  I think only issue with the story/writing is that it's a little rushed at times and that I wish it wasn't completely linear and had multiple paths at the end based on whether the player choose the cop life or his new triad family.  But it was a very enjoyable linear tale.

The missions were great!  Reminded me of some of the best missions from Just Cause games.  They did a good job mixing up the gameplay systems & locations to really make a lot of good story missions out of this sandbox HK they built.  The sidequests (favors) were just as good for the most part.  Overall good gameplay design.  The last 2 stages (the 2nd to last one especially) are really fantastic and badass for a sandbox game.

Now areas where I felt it could've been a little stronger is the linearity of it all.  Despite being a sandbox game, there's almost no freedom in how you do anything.  The combat is always very same-y because you have the guys who always block and you have to grab them and slam them into things or break their bones, you have the big guys that you just have to do the same xxxx(X) combos over and over because that's all that works.  Despite a decent amount of moves, the combat is never as creative and interesting as the Yakuza games and is more just linear like Batman.  It works, but having more combat freedom to mix up your battles would have made things more interesting.  Especially when every other lockbox is guarded by 3 guys that you gotta fight first (although your one freedom here is running them over in a car first, which I did a lot lol).  Same with the chases where you could never really catch the guy and just ran down a linear path until he stopped for a cutscene or a fight.  It's the illusion that you're doing something when you're really just holding forward and hitting A a few times.  And the missions were all extremely linear, go to this point, beat up guys, grab this gun, go down this hallway.  The mission designs were great and entertaining so it worked, just the game really has almost no freedom which is a little strange for a sandbox game.  I guess GTA is like that too, but I don't play GTA much.  Saints Row 3 had a lot more options to how to approach stuff.

Other things, the mini-games were ok except the LOCKBOX SAFE CRACKING WHICH YOU HAVE TO DO LIKE SIXTY TIMES IN THE GAME.  Oh my god that got old and annoying.  They really should have dropped that mini-game.  The side activities, while fun, were never super fun like the Saints Row 3 activities.  The leveling system was ok but it's too linear (like everything else in the game) and could have used more SR3 style upgrades.  It's also totally unbalanced how you get cop xp from Triad missions, Cop missions, and Drug Busts whereas you only get Triad xp from Triad missions.  So I maxed my Cop XP & Face XP like 60-70% into the game and meanwhile my Triad levels slowly built until the final mission.  Could have used more unlockables for cop/face so you didn't hit walls and stop gaining anything.

Then there's the ending, which was good and satisfying but
spoiler (click to show/hide)
if they had worked Pendrew as a gameplay boss in the final mission as well, it would've been a lot more satisfying then seeing him being defeated in a cutscene
[close]

Overall I think my main takeway is that Sleeping Dogs is a game that does everything VERY GOOD, but almost nothing ever reaches that true greatness of moments like Saints Row 3 when you're parachuting into the building to Power or the final mission when that song starts playing.  The combat is polished and solid but never reaches any OMG moments of the Yakuza/RGG games, the story is good and polished but never blows you away like the last hour of MGS3 or anything.  The side stuff is fun but nothing amazing.  etc...etc... It's a 4/5 game from start to finish, but at no time does it ever even attempt to hit those 5/5 GoTY type moments and that's fine because it never drops down either.  It's just a very consistent, very good and enjoyable game experience.  Not incredibly ambitious, but rather incredibly polished.   Definitely one of the best games I've played this year.

I think my sandbox gaming ratings still go:

A-tier:  Red Dead Redemption, Saints Row 3, Assassin's Creed 2, Burnout Paradise (sorta counts?)
Somewhere between A & B tier:  Just Cause 1 & 2 (because they rock and have incredible scope and moments but also SO MUCH COPY & PASTE repetition in them)
B-tier:  Sleeping Dogs, AC: Brotherhood, Crackdown
C-tier:  GTAIV, AC1, AC Rev
D-tier: Crackdown 2

I know I'm forgetting some sandbox titles I've played this gen, but that's off the top of my head.

19 hours into Natural Selection 2. Great game, maybe a little too much exactly like what I expected (feels like I'm playing NS except the graphics are better) but that's not a bad thing, game is tight though it would make the game a whole hell of a lot better if it had good tutorials, all they have is youtube vids linked through steam of their devs playing the game and explaining things over the top and if you fullscreen the vid or improve the quality it freezes or crashes. Yeah terrible effort on introducing people to play one of the more complex multi shooters out there. Luckily the community is pretty great, at least on Australasian servers everyone's helpful and there's a heap of rook servers :p

At this point it is important to take him to K-Bar, where players will be asked to provide some girls to entertain him. One of these girls is named Ilyana Sweat and she is a key character.

After the mission, players should give her a call and ask her out. Ilyana Sweat likes to work out, so, to impress her, Wei must beat her in a race. Once he does, all Lock Boxes in Sleeping Dogs will be added to the minimap.

Yeah, that makes them show up on the mini-map, but after you find them they disappear.  So the only way to find ones you are missing is to download a big map with all the locations and go one by one until you see the correct one show on your mini-map.

Nope. You can select them on your regular map. It shows all the locations of any discovered health spots, lockboxes, and such

playing Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition. I found it a little dull at first but now I've gotten my teeth into it, I'm enjoying the game a good deal.

Go to the Mojave Drive-In at Midnight as soon you hit 15 or so. Old World Blues is the best part of the game.

Sweet will do. Just did the mainline quest with the ghouls and the rockets, that was fun. I already pissed off the Legionnaires so I'm getting these bullet sponge kill squads chasing me around. Kinda annoying but they drop good loot.

Also I didn't realise all the DLC was on disc 2 and you had to install it, I was wondering why the DLC quests weren't showing. As a plus all the "Couriers Stash" pre-order items all went into my inventory at the same time, now I have some sweet weapons and armor, and tons of health packs.

Played a bunch of stuff this weekend:

-Mega Man 9 and 10 - replayed these up to Wily's castle. Honestly I'm not sure how high I'd put these on the pantheon of the original series, I definitely like 2 3 and 5 better. 9 is a bit worse than I remember it, probably because when I first played it I was so hyped that there was a new 8-bit Mega Man. But the level design is a bit too frustrating. 10 feels a lot more "me too" than 9 and doesn't have as good a soundtrack, but the graphics are definitely better.

-Robo Aleste - SEGA CD shmup by Compile. Definitely one of the better SEGA CD games I've played though Blazing Lazers/Super Star Soldier/Soldier Blade on Turbo are all the better Compile shmups. The alternate history plot of the game is pretty amazing - during the whole feudal Japanese era, the westerners give the Japanese giant mechs to duel it out, and you control Nobunaga's mech, or something. It's ridiculous.

-Mischief Makers - I beat this a loooong time ago back in college so I felt I'd replay a bit. Really awesome game, best reason for me to leave the 64 hooked up.

-Bangai-O 64 - I like this version a lot, don't really care for Spirits or the XBLA one but 64 and DC I like the best. This plays better with the N64 controller using the analog to aim than the DC controller using ABXY to aim, but the resolution isn't nearly as crisp because the N64 has shitty graphics output.

-Last Story - Just made it onto the boat and not sure what I think yet. Not really feeling the battle system and feel while the art is nice, the game looks a bit monochrome. Story seems predictable so far. Definitely not as good as the Mistwalker 360 games that's for sure.

FUCK YESSSSSS

the background music is so boner. JAPANESE ENGINEERS MANAGED TO CREATE AN 8 METER TALL HUMANOID ROBOT

I love it how he goes through the names of the Shogun and is obviously being guided on correct pronunciation  :lol

Oh jesus, Dustforce. I can't play this. I'm a perfectionist and the amount of time I'd have to put into being even slightly good at this game seems insane. It's just too much for me. /sissy
