Had a cold today so sat around playing games a bunch.

Picked up Gemini Rue again.  I'd played the first 20% or so and it was just ok, but playing the Primordia demo had me hankering for a short adventure game that doesn't have a horribly slow or clumsy UI/gameplay (like the Cognition demo...yikes).  I'm probably about 75% in now and it's alright.  It's really slow for a while, and there's a lot of "walk 2 mins across the map to try something" -> "doesn't work" -> "walk 2 mins back across the map to try something slightly different" which definitely irks me.  But ever since it picked up the pacing has been good, the art is great, and the writing is solid.

Tried Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and goddamn does it look good in DX10/11 mode (though framerate maxed is probably 30-40ish for me).  Definitely want to play this.  I really enjoyed the DS remake of the original years back.

Also started playing Hotline Miami - LIVES UP TO HYPE.  Awesome awesome game.

Ending up finishing Gemini Rue

Hmmm...that was....surprisingly good.  I can see why people liked it.  The game is so weird, the first half of the game (aka first 2 hours or so) is this slow paced detective/space jail game with tons of backtracking & very few locations.  Then the 2nd half is a very, very linear excitingly paced sci-fi action thriller.

I really enjoyed the 2nd half and the twists and turns and ending were actually pretty good and satisfying.  And the art/music were great throughout.  Overall I found it to be a lot better than Resonance, but that's probably just because the story in Resonance was fairly dumb in the end and stories make or break adventure games.  If you have 4-5 hours to kill, you could do a lot worse than play Gemini Rue.  I'm definitely up for playing more Wadjet Eye published stuff in the future like Primordia.

Gonna finish up Last Story, try to finish up Kid Icarus, then I think I'm gonna start Fortune Summoners, I'm a sucker for side scrolling action RPGs/Metroidvanias, even the better with :uguu graphics.

Hotline Miami is either just really, really difficult or really really difficult to control on a trackball mouse.  Think I'm gonna try using a X360 pad.

I actually didn't like using an Xbox360 pad for Hotline Miami, just felt way too sluggish.

Yeah, I tried it and I did way better with the X360 pad, but it also has its drawbacks.  The "click L3" in to lock-on gets triggered accidently so much that it can cause a lot of deaths.

Dustforce honestly isn't that great.  It has amazing music, good art, and the concept of speedrun style game is a great one.  That package should create another Super Meat Boy, Cave Story, vvvvvvv classic indie platformer.  But the controls are not very good.  You can do the stages, but it never feels smooth.  It's always jerky and trying to get from one motion another just right.  I almost never felt like I was "in the zone" and having fun like when you're speedrunning a good platformer.  It's a decent game, but not a great one.  One of those cases where Soundtrack > Game.

I don't like how Dustforce is open. A game like that thrives on linearity. You need a very controlled incline in difficulty in something like that.

I'm with Timber on this. The controls took a while to master, but once you did you could fly through the easier stages on your first try.

Yeah, the key system didn't work that well, and I feel sorry for anyone that strolled in to the lab first.

Gonna watch that vid later, but the demo isn't particularly great. Sword Mode (or whatever it's called) might be the most overpowered ability in action game history. You can slide into grunts, hold LT to enter sword mode and rip everyone to pieces by mashing X/Y before they even have a chance to react. Then you can zandatsu to refill your meter and do it again. Hopefully it's more balanced in the full game (or on higher difficulties).

Hotline Miami

Is it just me or is the "fists of fury" mask totally overpowered?  You pop into a room, then run at and hang by the door and 1 hit kill everyone as they run out with your fists.  Works surprisingly often.  It's like always having a knife on you.

The only thing that bugs me is how enemies who are standing facing a direction while smoking a cig instantly see you when you walk up behind them from the other side.  Seems kind of bs.  Otherwise it's GoTY.

i totally hate this about zelda.  I'd go exploring in TP, find some cool offshoots that took some time to get through...and find rupees that don't fit in my wallet and can't be spent anyway because there's nothing to buy.

what's the point of bloating the overworld to include this stuff?

Finished Hotline Miami

Really good game.  There's definitely a few flaws but overall the gameplay is really exciting and satisfying and the story presentation is tops.

I think as you get further and you learn how dumb the AI kind of takes away from the smart planning and makes it easier as the game progresses.  Likewise the story is super super interesting until the last act where they kind of drop the ball and just have some so-so ends.  I thought it was going to be a more interesting Killer 7-esque tale than it ended up being.

Not sure if it's Goty, but it's close for sure.  I think their sequel really has a chance to be a 10/10 goty title if they just smarten up the AI while still keeping them fair and not BS.

I do like all the replay value with the different masks and score rankings.  Will probably run through it again trying the various masks.

After trying to dig into some of the games in my backlog and being short on patience for just about every one, I flipped on The New Tetris for N64. I never get tired of this game. The last round I played I got ~1500 lines, hit rank 30 and felt pretty awesome about it. I agree with the opinion that the infinite-spin kinda breaks Tetris, and this version has a variant of it. It's not apparent at low speed, but there were a couple times where I pressed the hard drop and tried to direct the next piece only to slide the previous one around and fuck myself over towards the end.

Still, I feel pretty good about my skill in this game. I think I might go for an older version without the infinite-spin and 4x4 gimmicks, though. Maybe one of the PS1 versions or just spring for the NES classic on Virtual Console.

EDIT: Also, one of my favorite things about this game is the rant of a disgruntled programmer hidden in the code. It's worth a read if you've got a minute.

Jesus Christ, Masamune Date.

This nicca needs more health. Even at level 16 this dude doesn't have life that goes past the second musou bar. ???

Also, these generals in SW2 die real easily. On one map as Masamune, I killed that twerp Kanetsugu Noae and then was in the middle of whacking Keiji Maede, when the bitch made commander of my army suddenly dies. From who? From mooks and not an enemy commander.  :-\ Samurai Warriors 2 bringing the heat. :bow

On the flip side, Masamune is fun to combo with.

I am increasingly of the opinion that Zumba Fitness is making fun of me.

It wouldn't be off-base to make fun of my uncoordinated dancing while trying to mirror what the onscreen instructor is doing, but the timing seems so suspect. The only time the game compliments me is when my body is at rest. When I'm standing with my legs still, "Nice legs!" when my arms are at rest, "You're really working those arms!" It has to be sarcasm.

The game's UI is asstastic as well, but I imagine it is pure folly to expect anything from a partnering of Foundation 9 and Majesco.

Apparently Zoe Mode was later brought in to handle the series, and it becomes less of a trainwreck.

i beat MGS2 HD last night and understood all the end cut scenes perfectly.

it taught me that when you have a child, you pass your genes to them and that you should also pass on culture and things you've learned, and that's what our purpose is on this earth.  then i went into existential crisis because that's too boring of a reason to be alive.

so MGS1 ending -- you must live!

MGS2 ending -- live, but also have babies and pass culture on to them.

gonna play 4 then 3 then peace walker.  The patriots are such a cool plot device but I know it gets shitted up at the end of 4.

well that's a pretty dumb reason to not play MGS games  :-\

anyway, 3's story is legitimately awesome and doesn't have as much shlocky crap.

don't touch 4 with a 10 foot pole. I think it's literally 50% cut scene.
