Dark Souls is nothing like Skyrim. It's not open world either. It is one giant world you have to explore to find the next place to go without any hints, just logic and exploration.

@magus: you gotta play Demon's Souls mang. It will heal you from your jfagness.

Demon's Souls is a j-game.

Did you like the game overall, arch? And what can you say about Dark Souls? Did they change the game for good or bad? I've read it's more like an open-world experience like Skyrim?

Dark Souls takes place in a large interconnected game world. Not like Skyrim where you have large open areas but rather imagine all the levels in Demon's Souls connected together instead of split up.

Borys, the "open world" in Dark Souls is a little closer to Symphony of the Night in 3D than Skyrim, and there's no map at all. imo Dark Souls improves on nearly every aspect of Demon's Souls. The production value, music, armor/weapon sets, voice acting, enemy AI, level design, everything. The weapon upgrading is more straightforward and less of a grind, and the game is less grind-y overall. It's just a way more polished game. Demon's Souls feels like the "beta" of Dark Souls in a lot of ways, despite having its own unique charm that some people seem to really love.

It's my favorite game from current-gen. I own three versions of it from different regions. I imported the Asian version day one on a whim since the screenshots reminded me of Eurojank RPGs.

I didn't get as much enjoyment out of Dark Souls because it was poorly balanced at launch. It's probably a lot better now. Get the PC version with the fanmade patches. The framerate in the PS3 version is atrocious in some areas. It's not more open-world than Demon's Souls, they just got rid of the hub world system and instead you have one enormous area with shortcuts between different parts.

I had the same first impression as you, arch. I was there at Dark Souls' launch, didn't think much of it after I rung the first bell and put it down. It wasn't until I played it on PC that I really fell in love.

I fell in love with Dark Souls and then lost my save when my PS3 died and haven't restarted on PC!  Excited to get back to it, but also want to wait until I have a solid chunk of free time to dedicate.

Plus I don't really want to fight the Capra Demon again  :lol

more dragon crown, path B of the different stage's have been... disappointing, there aren't any new set piece or monster in path B,this would be the bits where you guys go "ah-ah! you got vanillawared! told you magus!" but luckily the path B of the various stages have been so far incredibly short, some of them don't even have mobs and just let you go straight to the boss! my playtime now says 6 hours and in that single hour between this and the previous post i've done done 5 stage + 2 fucks up... so at least the game doesn't drag around like odin's sphere! the bosses remain amazing in their execution too, from lowest to higher level

spoiler (click to show/hide)
boss 1 - the medusa i mentioned earlier,as i said if you look at her when she does her special move you take a lot of damage and get petrified, cute idea but not really impressive

boss 2 - a bunch of cyclops, they come from a gate which one of the player has to seal,as you fight the two of them, the cyclops inside the gate try to pry it open and one of the player has to slash their hand so that they stay inside, otherwise they join the battle

boss 3 - one of the stage takes place on a fortress as a battle rages on,path A doesn't really care about that but path B does and the boss battle involve taking out the fortress gate while getting swarmed by orcs and goblins, you get accompanied by a bunch of knight's NPC (which including your whole party makes this boss really chaotic) and at a certain point one of them brings a cannon and you have to load and fire the cannon in the midst of the fight while the orcs try to destroy it

boss 4 - is a killer rabbit,i really wanted to see this fight but truth to be told it was disappointing... yes,it's pretty funny that you get to fight a rabbit but all he does is jumping around, biting you and occasionaly summoning a tornado which also makes the battle really easy... the only real gimmick of the battle is that as i was dealing the last few blow,he instakilled me for some reason complete with an animation of my character neck getting breaked (i guess they really wanted to make the monty phyton reference obvious)

boss 5 - is a wraith, you can't actualy hurt him when the fight start, after breaking some wall you escape into another section of the level and this section has HOLY LAMPS,by lighting holy lamps you can then hurt him, while him and other zombie and skeletons try to destroy the lamp... the number of lamp is limited and if you run out of lamp's you are forced to forfeit the fight (i didn't realize that and the first time i fought him i just ran away thinking that was the whole point)

boss 6 - is a kraken/giant octopus, before you get to fight him he assault your ship and you have to repel him by loading and shooting at him with cannon's... it's a really cool sequence and really shows the co-op arcadey spirit of the game, the AI is luckily smart enough to load the cannons by itself (but they tend to die somewhat quickly truth to be told) after the ship sequence you get to fight him in a cave and you have to slash his tentacles before getting to the main body,as the fight goes on he tries to wreck the cave around and if he succeed,he causes a flood and escape and then...

[close]

i think i need to go back to sidequest mode again... the next boss has a suggested level of 26 but i'm only level 21

Started Extermination, for the good old PS2. Apparently one SWERY worked on this. Not the reason I'm playing this, but interesting nonetheless. It's an early PS2 action game, which means kind of shoddy controls and camera in a not so pretty package. The only thing that really annoys me so far is the bad quality of the VO. Not just the acting, but the sound quality as well. I think the PAL conversion has something to do with it, but I can't imagine it to be any more intelligible at the proper speed.

pinball arcade, done taxi, done goofers, only tables missing before season 2 are star trek, twilight zone and genie... i've got a really good run at twilight zone scoring 2,500,000,000 points but i'm still missing a lot of goals, having 2 goals related to whetever the game decide to give you the powerball is really frustating

There's a rhyme and reason with the Powerball. When you boot up the table it's always the third ball that spits out of the gumball machine. I'm certain that there's a youtube video with strategy for Powerball jackpots.

yeah but it's pretty annoying having to hit the gumball 3 times each time to get a try... and beating the power for the actual jackpot it's sort of random in itself! that said,i'm almost done with cactus canyon... just missing the save polly objective, the magical seems to magicaly drain as soon as the mode starts >:(
That Polly Peril goal is pretty challenging, that's for sure.

Can't wait to try some classic Stern tables.

Hopefully, Seawitch and Star Gazer are next, those look like fun.

Dragon's Crown

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand finished
final level - 30
total playtime - 11 hours and 15 minutes

i spent around 3-4 hours sidequesting bringing my character from level 21 to level 28 after that i mopped the rest up of the game with the last hour... the rest of the game goes as following

spoiler (click to show/hide)
boss 7-B - is a chimera,a huge chimera, take the whole screen, there is a lion head,a goat head and a snake head and they each cast spells of different element, the lion breaths fire, the goat cast thunder and the snake spit poison and ice,as the fight goes on the floor crumble's and you get taken to the floor below,if you take too much time you get to an underground grotto, the chimera falls into the lava and you get nothing... one pretty cool detail is that as you beat the goat head it goes all scheletric

boss 8-B - eh this is actualy really cool, you have to stop the resurrection of the demon king, you kills a few grunt then you get teleported to the hell where you get to punch the demon king (which i swear really looks like diablo) in the face,i know i've said so many times that the game looks gorgeous but i think the demon king is one of the goodest looking mobs, but wait! the demon king isn't the boss, the boss is actualy a smaller archdemon,he teleports around and cast spells and frankly kinda pales in comparison to the demon king sequence... they should have made the demon king the actual boss

boss 9-B - and of course,to end the dungeons & dragons bestiary you obviously need what? a dragon (it's right there in the title) he sleeps around in a mountain of gold so you get the first strike, you can fight him in the room where you start (if you do,everytime the dragon moves the coins of it's mountain of gold scatters everywhere and it's a really neat detail) but you are actualy supposed to escape to the next room, after escaping he chases you around and you punch him in the face in the meanwhile, once in a while he charge's his breath and you have to pick up shields to protect yourself otherwise you get burned to a crisp, there is only one shield so the other party member are forced to close on you to block the attack which i guess means plenty of trolling opportunity when playing multiplayer... if you get chased up to the end of the bridge, the bridge crumbles and he falls and you get nothing exactly like the chimera and the kraken

after doing all the bosses, you get to the final boss and there isn't even an actual final dungeon, the game is like "here is the final boss,go ahead,i don't mind" the final boss is... a bigger dragon,no it's not the same dragon fight, just another different bigger dragon,he flies around and when he breaths fire you have to hide behind a bunch of walls otherwise you die instantly,oh and you can't credit feed because he's the final boss and they wanted to be jerks for some reason... it kinda feels rendundant,i understand the game is called dragon's crown but couldn't they have puth some eldritch horror or something? or make you fight the other dragon boss at a different time?
[close]

i'd say the biggest problem of the game are the RPG element itself, they aren't very deep... when you level up you get skill points to spend but the skills are all small stuff... i have one that let me do very small shockwave when using my up attack, one that extends the duration of my aerial attack and one that let me auto block... apparently the spell caster classes get to spend their skill points on actual spell and attack but as a warrior,i'm like "oh yeah,i haven't spend any skill points in a while" each skills require you to be a certain level before being able to be upgraded too so you can't just decide to spend all your skill point on a single thing and do a build a-la diablo

the loot is sort of half assed too, each piece of equipment has a level and you can't equip it unless you are equal or higher than that and you always seems to get equipment that is your level or 1-2 level above no matter what sorts of dungeon you go,each equipment has a rank and higher rank items have special powers but these too feel like barely tought and are stuff like "increase damage by 9%" and "deals 10% fire damage" the game throws you a lot of rank B,A and S items too so there is rarely a reason to use lower ranked stuff,it's pretty far from a dedicated dungeon crawler like diablo legendary items or collectable set

the game is basicaly a 5-6 hours arcade beat'em up,it plays fine and looks so good and amazing it will make you forget all the next gen stuff... as i said and repeated i can't imagine anyone who enjoyed the D&D sidescrollers (or arcade beat'em up in general) not liking this one barring the most hardened asshole but it gets stretched up by another 4-5 hours as you need to level up (this is amplified by the fact that the last 3 boss will escape and leave you with nothing unless killed in time) it feels more natural than odin's sphere repeating just for the sake of repeating and it's not as painfull since the stage are pretty short and you are focusing on clearing the sidequest but i can't help but think the whole thing was done just so that people wouldn't just buy the game, finish it and then sell it back in a flash

finishing the game unlock PvP,a random mode where the room gets mixed around and you fight a random boss and hard mode,i tought i would have to redo the game as a whole for hard mode but you start right away with all 9 stages unlocked, from the second leg of the game, the bosses all get an increase of level and it's pretty obvious they want me to level up more by the fact that ending the game also unlocks a shitload of new sidequest (mostly involving soloing a boss or defeating it under 2 minutes) so frankly it kinda seems more like "drag it around a little more" than "hard"

there is no actual plot need to finish the game with the other classes but each class you finish the game off gives you a ps3 trophy related to it,so yes if you want to get the platinum you have to finish the game 6 times (and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the hidden trophies are "finish the game on hard" and "finish the game on extreme" so finish the game 8 times?)

other pet annoyance

- you can't actual open any chest or door in the game by yourself,by moving the right analog stick you move around a cursor and with L1 you click things ordering your thief friend to do the dirty job for you,it's kinda puzzling why they decided to do this as you have to wait for the thief to open stuff for you, some chest are trapped but the thief is invincible and he's the one who takes the damage so what's the point?

- after a certain point you get magic runes that let you get special effect, some of the runes are inscribed on the level and some are brought by yourself and by combining 3 of them you can get effect like gaining an extra life or summoning a bunch of fireballs, the problem is that while the game tells you what runes get you an effect,it only does so when speaking to the wizard NPC... forgot what a combination do? you're on your own

- the AI is not bad,if a situation calls for a special action it will happily do it and if it has low health it will pick/use health items, but it tends to die somewhat quickly and i've seen it standing on top of traps quite a few time

and yes as i said of those 11 hours, only 6 are actualy playing the game from start to finish, the rest are powering up by replaying zone you've already done and finishing optional objective so that you can actualy finish the game

anyway i made some more progress in pinball arcade,i got cactus canyon polly peril, got all dr.dude objective (double jackpot was the one i was missing) and even done all of central parks (i swear old-ass table are the worst, featuring huge gaps everywhere and crazy-ass goals... the thing that makes me even more mad is that they have tilt! was tilt even a word back in 1960?) so the only new table remaining are centaur and white water... playing centaur is really something... like being stuck into wizard of wor FOREVER

ferrari - have you ever heard of visual pinball? it's a pc program that use fanmade 2D rendition of tables paired with MAME emulation of tables rom to get some pinball action going... it's not as good as the actual pinball arcade but it's pretty nice to use as a preview of upcoming tables or to discover other one

"Finished" Extermination. Failed on the last boss (ran out of healing items) and youtubed the ending instead of trying again. Decent enough for an early PS2 game. Always thought of it as a launch game, but apparently it came out a year after. Nothing special, but fun enough for the couple of hours it takes to finish.
Also, the y-axis was inverted, with no way to change it. That's just evil, but it had a lock-on function at least so it was tolerable.

On to Klonoa 2.

Aliens Infestation

its... ok. The first 20 minutes of the game are weirdly really difficult considering the first boss. I get the feeling that the game means for you to lose some of your marines early on so you understand that once they're gone, they're gone. However I don't think they pull it off gracefully enough and I felt like I was just failing. Or maybe I was, whatevs.

The controls are a bit awkward to get used to and the "cover" shooting mechanics are kind of boring.

Buuut, walking around with that music, the motion sensor sounds, the atmosphere, it's pure fan service for me.

does anybody here enjoy/still play the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer? I never got the chance to play much when the game was coming out, but I've been playing it lately and really enjoy the combat and the intense challenge of the enemies they throw at you. It's too bad most random people you matchmake with tend to suck a hot load of ass at playing, and can barely scrape to the end of a Reaper fight on Bronze without some serious carrying. If you're interested in joining me sometime, add bigbobslamjam on Origin and shoot me an IM :)

I played it some back when it was more current and it was actually fun for a while. I eventually managed to regularly beat Gold difficulty with randoms. At first because there is a particular map (the small Cerberus base with the landing pad outside) that was easy to beat by camping a particular spot for most of the match if you faced Geth. That was good for farming currency until I eventually unlocked most of what was available at the time and branched out into other maps with other enemies. I think I did every map on Gold, though it was a lot more tedious on some. The Turian moon base was very difficult if you faced Reapers. The Banshees would regularly end matches by themselves. But it also produced heroic moments, where only one or two people would survive the wave and pull everyone through (that hadn't left the match, anyway).
I got bored before the last few updates came out. The trailer fopr the new classes looked neat. Especially the big Geth destroyer or whatever they are called, but I'm not gonna re-install just for that. The ping would probably be really bad if we played, anyway.

Klonoa 2 feels like Sonic in many spots. Jump pad sections, slides, superfluous companions and a weird friend with disturbing eyes, etc. Some levels are pretty big, too. The scenery at least, not the path through it. They have multiple stages where you get shot into the background and return or get catapulted further, backtrack to open doors with acquired keys, solve a puzzle to start generators, etc. So it's more invovled than the first game, but it still plays well.
There are also a bunch of cutscenes and a world map, which I found surprising. The cutscenes bookend every level and you always go back to some sage who tells you where to go next. Thankfully you can skip the dialogue at least.

The latency has been messed up, yeah :( what a bummer. I had the game when it came out, but I was too excited to see dat ending and wanted to take a break when I saw it. I'm thankful there are still some people playing, but it's surprising that players this dedicated suck this hard. Maybe they're just dumb kids?

Could be. The dedicated players probably did everything there was to do fairly quickly and then moved on to other games. As surprisingly good as it is, there's not much longevity with no new content coming out any more.

Yeah, I caught that much before I clicked the rest away. It's surprisingly dark in some spots, actually. Shortly before we were in the nation of Volk which was in the midst of a (civil?) war. We almost let them be blown up by an exploding reactor. One of our buddies' comment was along the lines of "leave 'em, all they do is fight anyways".  :badass
Also notice that the war-like people sound germanic. Fuckers. :lol The amusment park nation next door has a French sounding name.

I can't help reading some of that stuff. I was very surprised to see it interrupted by so many cutscenes after the original, which was, as you say "WAHOO!" and off you go.

They GBA games are on my list already.

@Brob
Only thing I ever saw of them was a war machine. :heh
Unless those little black Kirbies with guns were supposed to be Volk soldiers.

does anybody here enjoy/still play the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer? I never got the chance to play much when the game was coming out, but I've been playing it lately and really enjoy the combat and the intense challenge of the enemies they throw at you. It's too bad most random people you matchmake with tend to suck a hot load of ass at playing, and can barely scrape to the end of a Reaper fight on Bronze without some serious carrying. If you're interested in joining me sometime, add bigbobslamjam on Origin and shoot me an IM :)

was hype until i saw youre playing the pc version :( im always up for a round of me3 multi, but only on 360.

Played about an hour of Mega Man X

it's a hard game. I picked the Chameleon Man for the first level and couldn't beat him. Then picked the Penguin dude next and beat him. Then some electricity dude next but couldn't get by the mid-boss. Finally capped it off with Eagle Man.

And that's where the little pleasure centers in the brain started firing off and the key to what made Mega Man popular kicked off. I used a power I obtained in a level to beat the boss in another level. A power I may not have had at this point based on what levels I decided to go with.

Specifically I used the dash move to counter Eagle Man's wind phase to get in on his face and fill it with BUSTER. There was a big dumb grin when I killed his bird bitch ass and got his power.

I def enjoyed it. Will play more.

If you would like to watch me be bad at Mega Man, you can watch the recording here: http://www.twitch.tv/fistfulofmetal/b/438429990

Done with Klonoa 2. Holds up pretty well still. The levels just flow very naturally. No filler, nothing repeats too often, just very well paced all around. Difficulty wasn't that high, but god help you if you don't have a few extra lives saved up for the last level. You can fall to your death in almost every of the 10 or so sections. The hover board bits were a bit annoying as well, but I tend to overcompensate in the turns so it could just be me.
As far as the story (I apparently hadn't tried pressing start before, as that skips the cutscenes entirely...) you basically end up fighting the lonely and depressed last survivor of a destroyed kingdom. Huh. Oh, and the Volk look like hedgehogs.  5/5 Wahoos, I guess.

I need to try Klonoa 2. I've only seen a bit of it at a friend's college dorm some years and years ago before she swore off anything Sony/Japanese and became a hardcore Xbot. Really liked the first game, or at least the Wii remake. It's cool how you have a fairly limited moveset but the level design has you stretching the moveset to the absolute limit.

I've been playing more MGS Rising. Still not feeling it, a lot of the mechanics are poorly explained, and fuck rotating the joystick real fast Mario Party style when you are in hitstun. I'll stick with it a bit more, then go off to play Penny Arcade ep 4 or maybe finally play that copy of Asura's Wraith my brother lent me last year that I haven't played much of yet.

I am loving Demon's Souls. Best RPG I have played in the last 20 years and I've beaten over 150 RPGs in that time period.

Klonoa was great. The sequel was well done, but those hover board sections were horrible. The whole game is about 2D gameplay, so adding z-depth crap was not only poorly implemented, but an antithesis to the game's larger philosophy.

Surfing, snowboarding, skating. I didn't know what to call them, but if that thing works on solid surfaces without wheels it must be a hover board.

And yeah, those sections weren't very good, but they were doable. I had perspective issue in some other places as well, but at least you know that you can make a jump on a 2D plane because there's no other way forward.

Aliens Infestation is kind of totally badass. I like the style of linear Metroidvania they are going for.
