Partway through Demon's Souls with one world completed and steadily moving through the rest. Liking the game so far and after beating DS and DS2 it's been pretty smooth sailing. I think I've died more from being a clumsy ass and falling than anything else.

So the world might be mended...

That ridiculous TLoU GAF thread today reminded me I own the game so tonight I'll be starting it and seeing what all the hype is about.  :)

Tip for TLOU. Aside from a couple areas when you kinda need to rush/play it by ear, the game is pretty much MGS with zombies. Make sweet love to the bow and melee weapons.

just finished up the story in Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix in the remix collection.

man the final mix version is waaayy better than the original. you can actually die now! overall the combat is still weaker than the first game because relying on contextual counters is just no substitute for the parrying system in the original. however the new balancing along the with the  massive variety in the gameplay still makes the game compelling. there's tons of postgame content with fifteen new bosses and a new dungeon that seems pretty sizeable. and with the new story scenes and the Days movie from the first remix collection I can understand what the hell is going on!

overall a really fun and compelling game, and way more memorable to me than the original release. after I finish off all the bosses I'll move on to Birth by Sleep, which I only played a few hours of on psp

Interesting. Never really cared for KHII, but I'll give FM a shot. KH1 is my fave.

That platforming and exploration :lawd
Teasing treasure chests and ability unlocks :lawd
Learning to fly and flying all over the map to get loot :lawd
Defense oriented combat :lawd
Huge levels with branch paths :lawd

The more I think of it the less I want to replay KHII. It's so. Fucking. Boring. Compared to 1. I have huge amounts of love and nostalgia for the first game. I thought II was a bad step through and through. Crap game and one of the most disappointing sequels of all time.

kh2fm doesn't fix everything, but it's a way more robust package that forces you to learn details of it's combat system this time around. like you I was really disappointed with the original release; I could barely remember a single thing about it when I picked up this rerelease. however they put a lot of work into it you can spend a shitload of time now tracking down all the hard to reach items, fighting the games many many superbosses, or working on some of the new optional quests. hell, I just spent and hour trying to beat what I hope to god is the final battle of this new dungeon. it's a lot of fun.

I'd highly recommend both of the Remix releases for fans of arpgs. they're both great port jobs, and the Final Mix versions of both games (haven't played bbs yet) are soooo much more refined and fun than their original releases. I'm having a blast.

also where the FUCK do I find Charlie in Shenmue

"He loves his hawwwwwwwg"

Charlie is a biker. There's a motorcycle shop right in front of Heartbeats. There's a man bending over with a blue shirt tinkering with a bike all the time. The two bike gangsters hang out there too. He should point you in the right direction. Talk to the shop keepers on Dobuita like Kurita. Want to do something cool? Talk to the  bike gangsters at a certain time while looking for Charlie.

Big tip for Shenmue: use common sense. You're looking for a criminal and low life, so stick to low life places. Talk to gangsters. Go to Nagai Industries (green door, open at night,  front entrance of Dobuita) and talk to the local yakuza about it. He loves his bike, so talk to bikers. He has a leather jacket, so talk to a jacket salesman. He likes tattoos, so go to the tattoo parlor.

Good luck.

Kurita gives you the skinny. Go to the main shops street in Dobuita at 7pm. After that, I suggest talking to the bike gangsters.

If you're lacking patience, let the game TEACH you patience. If you have to wait till 7, spend it playing darts or practicing moves or collecting toys. The awesome thing about Shenmue 1 is how it forces you to be patient, and that entire mindset is the anti-thesis of pretty much every video game that is not Shenmue 1. Even Animal Crossing allows you to skip time.  Even the sequel does. Every single mini game is an exercise on testing patience, whether it's the aforementioned activities or even playing the arcade games. Going from a hack and slash game like Kingdom Hearts II to Shenmue is night and day of the video game experience. One game is a linear game with nothing but enemies to slash, the other is this game where if someone tells you to be at a specific time the next day (in-game time), there is no option to skip. You are getting polar opposites in  your gaming appetite. I highly suggest holding off on Shenmue until you are finished with KHII, because otherwise it WILL color your experience and WILL make you impatient when Shenmue literally requires the opposite.

1/3 of the way through Arkham Asylum in the Botanical Gardens. What are people's ranks of the games, including Origins?

I was going to skip this one to play City, but I'm too invested now and I read some people liked the linearity of Asylum over City.

You can tell there's a lot of fan service in this, even if I never read the comics. Think I know the most about Batman out of any superhero, with the movies, shows, and his place in pop culture.

He's more American to me than Superman :yeshrug

Batman: TAS was good stuff from what I remember. Now I want to rewatch it.

I'm enjoying Origins a bunch. The missions are all paced super well, they use your gadgets frequently and you move from spot to spot without any downtime. Just finished the Bane boss fight which was a lot of fun.

The setup for the story is really cool and I'm liking the execution(er) a lot.

Man, I can't stop thinking about GTAV.  What an incredible game that was.  I read up about the alternate endings (did the best ending) and I don't have any interest in playing them or watching videos of them, just the descriptions sound gross.  It says something that by the end I cared so much about these characters that

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't even imagine doing a mission where I have to kill one of them, because it just feel so wrong.  Even Trevor, whose a horrible person and scary especially midway when he starts having a mental breakdown, but by the end there's enough narrative dissonance that I like him as a character and it'd depress the shit out of me to kill him.  Same with Micheal.  The good ending with all three of them teaming up and doing a multi-kill assassination run to take out all the assholes who'd been bossing them around the whole game at the same time, ending with pushing Devon off a cliff and parting ways in the sunset was incredibly satisfying.  Best amateur Tarantino game ever!
[close]

People say GTAV's plot falls apart, ends abruptly, and is too short, but I didn't see any of that.  It had some narrative issues around the middle with Franklin basically disappearing from the story for a while and his story with Lamar kind of taking a backdrop to the Trevor/Michael story, but in the end I felt like everything really came together and then ended perfectly.  I've never liked GTA writing or characters much before (never even got more than 20 missions into any of the previous games), but I feel like GTAV was really well written for a videogame.  The characters were great and their choices felt in character and everything made sense for the world they were in.

The missions were great.  Just the uniqueness of it all.  50+ hours of mission/side missions and basically no repetition.  Every hour was unique.  Compared to the other sandbox games with 10 mission types cloned 6x each, it's just feels amazingly fresh and compelling.  Plus everything was fun.  Making GTA easier with the god mode special abilities and the checkpoints everywhere made the game so.much.more.enjoyable than past GTAs that were constantly frustrating because of bad controls and weak mission design and lack of checkpoints.  Fun >>>> Frustrating in a game like this.

It helps that at 4k/60fps it's also the best looking game in existence at the moment, with the most impressively detailed sandbox world ever.  There's also just enough activities to do that it feels alive and not just some static dead world you drive around.  There's a lot of cool interiors and buildings are often complexly detailed in design, complete with ladders everywhere so you can vertically get up on basically every object.

GTAV feels like MGS3 to me.  A huge, amazing game that I could see myself replaying every year because it's fun, looks great, and I like the characters/writing/cutscenes.  RDR was also one of my favorite games of all time, with a great lead character in Marston and a really cool world to explore that looked gorgeous and missions that were fun to play.  So even though I was never a Rockstar fan and always thought they were super overrated, their last two games have really blown me away, so at this point I've got to jump on the bandwagon and be a fan of the company.  RDR and GTAV show they've learned a ton about making fun, enjoyable games with likeable characters, so hopefully the quality continues.  It's going to be tough for RDR2 to have a lead anywhere near as good as Marston, but I hope they can pull it off!

Yeah, I really liked Origins.  I think it has the best art design of AA/AC/Origins, some of the best writing/acting and is really well paced.  Though AA is still tighter because it's a smaller connected space that's very well designed.  I like all three, but definitely liked AC the least.  Will play Knight whenever they finally fix my free PC copy I got from Nvidia.  Can't justify buying the PS4 version since I can just play it on PC for free in a few months when they fix it and get it back out.

Otherwise, I got the new Blazblue today on PS3 ($10 cheaper, prefer DS3 vs DS4 for d-pad in fighters) and not having played BB for a few games, and not seriously played BB since the original CT release...it's pretty cool now!  Really nice sized roster and everyone's got a lot of cool moves to play with.  I feel like with Arc fighters it's best to either play it at the start for the new "wow" factor and then wait 4-5 entries to jump back in for the fully fleshed out content heavy version, or just start there in the first place.  Guilty Gear didn't really get awesome until XX#Reload.  Can't wait until GG Xrd gets another 3 years of updates.  Will be pretty boss.  Glad they already got Johnny back in, but not gonna be interested in the console port of Xrd R with only 3-4 new characters for another $60 entry.  Definitely waiting at least until the next one, if not the one after that.

Though sometimes when they keep a series going for too long they start really running out of ideas for new characters and you get like 3 versions of Robo-ky and Nu/Lamba, etc... I think that's usually when they should move on...

You know, thinking about Origin's nice fast travel addition reminds me how awesome the 3 character system in GTAV was.  That's many reasons it was great, but one of my favorites was acting as an instant fast travel system to one of the other two characters who'd be somewhere else on the map, either closer to the objective or near some more interesting stuff to do.  At worst you could always call a cab, but using the character change to jump across the map was super convenient.

« Reply #26604 on: July 18, 2015, 03:10:30 AM »
Lambda only exists because they needed a "new" character to take Nu's playstyle since she dies in the first game. Then Lambda sacrifices herself in the second game and Nu is brought back to life, but they tried to give Nu a stance-based playstyle between the CT Nu/ CS Lambda modes. It didn't really work out at all, so they split them up again for gameplay purposes and fleshed them out. Have zero clue if Lambda herself is still relevant in the story, since she should still be dead, but who the fuck knows with a series that deals with time loops and alternate universes.

The slice-of-live scenes into which we're dropped for each character also work really well to flesh out their characters. Michael's belligerent and self-destructive, Franklin is trying to be supportive of his friends and family, all of whom are broken, and Trevor is mysteriously alive despite waking up in vomit and piss in back alleys, the beach, or the top of a mountain.

They've talked about that a few times, but the Heists were planned from the outset, and look how damned long those took. I suspect they're working on either Bully 2 or Redder Deader Redemption right now, outside of the support team keeping GTA Online growing and interesting.

Finished my first playthrough of Type-0... story definitely went off the rails a bit during the final chapter. But I hear you get a lot more plot during the second time through... not to mention a lot of the expert trials I missed because I was underleveled, and I'm missing one trophy needed for a platinum. Gonna take a few week break from the game and go back.

Playing more Tomba, pretty far along in the game, got the unlimited fast travel item, which makes things much easier. Weird game, clunky controls but the collectathon nature of it is pretty addicting and I do like the look, it looks pretty decent for a PS1 game but is still undeniably a PS1 game.

Also started Metroid II. Not too far into it, I think like the 3rd or so save point. I actually never beat this back in the day, though I played a bit of it on my cousin's Game Boy. The repetitive, claustrophobic nature of the environments, and sporadic save points, make the game a bit spooky.

Used random steam game picker, so played some TRUCK RACER which I assume I got in one of a thousand bundles.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/256070/

It's actually kinda good, putting nitro on semi-trucks is up there in the greatest ideas of all time. It looks like the later races may give you more than just the cabs?

You can upgrade all kinds of shit, and they made a ton of the courses so they have tight turns that are basically impossible to make with a semi. And you build your nitro from smashing into the other trucks along with drifting and stuff.

Launching your nitro as like half your truck is wobbling and barely staying together > The Last of Us.

This is a surprisingly fantastic arcade semi-truck racer ^_^

+ Plenty of Destruction / Damage
+ Races are short and sweet
+ Maps have plenty of detail
+ Terrain effects vehicle performance (dirt / roat)
+ Plenty of parts to buy / upgrade your truck.
+ Nitro / Boost system (works similar to the burnout series)
+ AI will ram into eachother, and the rails
+ Drifting
+ High top speeds! 150+KMPH in a Semi Truck!

- Not many trucks to choose from.
- No inside view, or camera rotation
- Not enough variety in stages. (race, time trial, elimination)
- Unbalanced Income to Upgrades (shortly after playing the game, I was lapping the AI with super speed)
- Not much user customization
- You can't ever see the front of your truck or the sides

I paid: $1.50 (Indie Gala Tiny Mix Bundle)
Suggested Price: $2.50
I agree with the last dude about it being pretty fun for around $2. Can't go higher than that due to no trading cards. Hands out achievements like every three minutes tho.

Probably can't play it online though:

I've finished playing the fan translated Ace Attorney Investigations 2 game. I've enjoyed it far more than the somewhat-mediocre first one, and it's really great.

Now I am craving for more Ace Attorney games but I've already beaten all of them except Phoenix Wright VS Professor Layton.  I should get that one, I wonder if it's any good.

It honestly feels like the design of the game is that you die over and over each time learning just enough more about the level to progress one more step before you die.

Arkham Asylum stopped working after sinking 7 hours into it. Something to do with .NET Framework crashes at start up, mentions PhysX too thinking my card doesn't support it (GTX 960).

So I started up Mafia II. Damn brehs, this is my kind of game. Only been half hour, but it reminds me of Bully a bit. I like open world games that are also linear be it in the gameplay scenarios. Some of the interiors are super detailed and probably will go unnoticed. I like the atmosphere and attention to crafting a believable world. GTA is an obvious comparison, but is there anything out there like Mafia II? I like the gunplay, but also the fist/melee fighting.

I'm thinking, haven't played any of these though:

Yakuza/maybe Shenmue
Sleeping Dogs
Saint's Row: The Third
Max Payne 3?

Anything else really like this that I'm sleeping on? Haven't played most major releases in the past 5 years so I got a lot to try. Also, are they going to bring the Yakuza series to the West for PS4 like they did PS3?

I need to go back to Mafia II, I liked what I played of it. If you're saying it is like Bully, I definitely need to revisit it.

Sleeping Dogs has a fairly linear mission structure inside the open world setting. Many missions take place inside single-use buildings with fairly tactical layouts SD also has the best use of straight-up brawling but still allowing for gun use. There's a fair bit of jank, but it is a very solid game.

Max Payne 3 is strictly linear, no open world anything. The gunplay is satisfying on Normal, but I have heard Hard and above is just bullet-sponge adjustments. The multiplayer in MP3 was superior to GTA Online, which is sad. MP3 multiplayer on 360 is dead-dead-dead now.

Saints Row 3 is about as open as you can get; NEARLY ALL the "missions" in the game are just slightly story-fied versions of the activities you perform in the open world venue. It's great, but if you want linear, this isn't where you should be looking.

Thanks for the recs. I'm way too early in Mafia II to say it's really like Bully.

There's no classes or mini games like that so far, but the fist fighting reminds me of Bully.

Also, the way it masquerades as an open world game, but is full of very detailed linear interiors and sections.

Like you wake up at your mom's place in your old bedroom during the winter, go to your dresser to put on your jacket, and it gave me Bully vibes.

Both games seem to nail their respective settings and really craft a tangible mood with a well-acted narrative driving everything.

I really just want Bully 2 in New England somewhere with all the seasons and that :lawd music. What happened to those Bully 2 rumors from a few years ago? Composers referencing their work on Bully 2 through LinkedIn :hyper

Saints Row 3 and 4 are some of my favorite games, especially with co-op.

Wanted to play 2 but the PC port is garbage, no matter how much I try fixing it. :-\

Nice, I'll keep working on this backlog. Is Darksiders a decent Zelda clone, b/c that doesn't sound bad if true? That's the only real questionable game on my list.

That and Alan Wake, which I'm afraid the combat will be dull af. Is Alan Wake decent?

The first Darksiders is great, check it out.
I've got the 2nd one on standby; did it suck?

Alan Wake - 6/10 gunplay and combat

Never finished it :(

most of Alan wake is spent killing mobs of the exact same enemy, in the exact same manner. it's boring.

the cards are easy to use tho. they level up ultra-quick and then you combine them with another card and bam new abilities. you can even switch cards mid battle so you generally have access to every ability and you just end up having to watch your stats/elemental weaknesses.

and the story starts off real slow but I just started episode 2 and it definitely picks up a lot.
