World of Tanks got a big update, so I'm downloading that. Unusually, they have broken their "play while updating" feature which allowed for Tier I tanks to be used. Boo. Looking forward to more Achievements, and hopefully some fresh blood.

Age of Empires has a Clash of Clans-like F2P from Smoking Gun Studios in Canuckistan. After soft-launching in Canada, it's finally up on the US store. It gives 200 GamerScore if you log in with XBL credentials. I've played a bit of it today. I think I like it, but it's also fairly buggy. Login errors, dropped connections, poor sleep-state recovery. Still, it's pretty and fun, and it's not like the gameplay model is unproven. I still miss the GFWL version of AoE done by Gas Powered Games; that was the real deal.

Lastly, going back to Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion. I dig 2.5D platformers, so I am hoping to enjoy this more this time around. I am still not fond of the sloppy feeling controls, unclear player-metrics, and inconsistent levels of in-game help. Right now I am stuck after the third unlocked room, having no idea how to open up the stairway to the other rooms, presumably on the blocked 2nd story. Enh.

It doesn't get better, I feel. I like what Castle of Illusion 3D tried to do, but it ended being a little too simple and the sloppy controls didn't help. I remember needing to do some really asinine jumps in order to actually get up to the higher levels of the castle hub.

Thanks for confirming; yeah, the controls just feel weird. They might be spot-on, but the camera in conjunction with the controls makes it feel slippery and sloppy.

Also figured out that the reason I was stuck was I had not yet beaten the boss in The Storm, so I guess there's that.

One thing's for sure: it ain't no blessed Klonoa.

Alright, I am going to try to make the big push tonight and finish Final Fantasy XIII. I'm currently bogged down on Gran Pulse.

May God have mercy on my soul.

lol there's still lots more after gran pulse, and some of it's fairly hard too. it's gonna take you a minute to finish it all up.

After beating the original Genesis game recently, I found out that they made a 3D remake of Castle of Illusion... tbh it looks kinda ugly (for some reason a lot of 2.5D platformers have an awkward art style that isn't a patch on the crisp sprite art of classic platformers). How do you guys think it compares to the original 2D game?

The Wii remake was a pretty decent game, (the challenging extra level being the best), I've never played the other Klonoa games so I don't know how it compares. I like how you have a pretty basic moveset and the game constantly finds ways to challenge your use of that moveset. Great gameplay balance.

Been playing Rayman Legends. Good but not quite as good as Origins, although I don't really know why. MAybe it's because it's less focused and there are always new levels unlocked. You're progressing so much it feels like there is no progression at all. I also miss the CHase levels, those were so the most satisfying levels in Origins.

The first Klonoa is basically perfect, the 2nd one is prettier but has some Very Unfortunate z-depth sequences which do not fit in the gameplay at all. If you want a cheap thrill, the GBA Klonoa game is also really good.

The Castle of Illusion 3D remake art direction is traditional Disney colorful, though it's full-screen colorful, which means the eye has trouble determining what's important. The backgrounds have every bit as much saturation and contrast as the interactive elements, so it is frequently difficult to parse. It also feels like the fidelity of the textures is inconsistent, leading to a blandness despite the heavy handed colors. I would bet money that it comes from license holder mandates to "make it more colorful" rather than actual developer choice.

The GBA Crash's were really hard in comparison to the PS1 ones for me too. Maybe my gaming kung-fu just was wearing off by then.

Good games imo (Klonoa too)

Every time you mention that there is more than one GBA Klonoa title, I am surprised, make a mental note to look for them, and then forget by the next time I visit a game store. I swear, it's like being a walk-on on Groundhog Day.

I played through Roundabout which is incredibly charming and fun little puzzle(?) game where you control a limousine driver named Georgio who drives her limo in a slow circular manner. She travels the land meeting interesting people and maybe even finding true love!

It also has amazingly bad FMV cutscenes

Playing Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. At Chapter 5 and the game's level design seems to be opening up outside the Castle.

Combat can either be done with stealth or guns blazing or a mix of the two and the game does a good job making both paths satisfying.

The game's perk system winds up rewarding your particular play style too.

I go both ways :teehee

It's more of the same, but I liked the previous game so that's fine by me.

Also, I really like using my Xbox controller on PC and I've been doing it with this game.

Can't tell if i'ma lazy cac or these 360 controllers are that good

Finished up Halo 1 & 2 via the Master Chief Collection.

It basically reconfirmed the opinions I already had.

Halo 1 is neat for its AI, and its graphics, and its scale especially considering its time, but the levels are too long. The  level design is too repeated. And it has long stretches of boring.

Despite the disaster that was the dev cycle of Halo 2, I think the game is more fun and better paced. The story is meh but I found it to be the much more enjoyable experience. Despite the shitshow that is the multiplayer of the The Master Chief Collection, I think the remaster on Halo 2 is really well done. The cutscenes are great. And just the general improved graphics overall are really impressive. It's all most impossible for me to play it in the original way, with that remixed version around.

Working on Halo 3 now and will post some thoughts on that when done.

Finished Final Fantasy XIII. I enjoyed the series of bosses in the final chapters and I wish that the game would have had more of that and way less of, well, all that other stuff.

For all its other flaws, what bothered me the most was how long it took to get going and that they had obviously stretched out their 20-30 hour game with trash mob filler.

Tried the new Elite expansion - Power Play, a flat update that really adds nothing of value to the game. Pledging allegiance to a galactic power feels more restrictive and adds another, impossibly mundane mission selection - if it's a war faction you can engage in more fights, if it's a financial/social faction you can engage in fetch quests. Avoid.

The Old Blood was alright. Not as good as the main game and much shorter. I liked the New Order, but would skip this because it doesn't really offer anything new.

Got my Wii so besides NBA Street V2, been playing Super Mario Galaxy. Controls are kind of off-putting, but serviceable enough.

Beat Tomba the other day - it was an OK game, albeit a bit clunky with regards to controls and hit detection, and heavy on the backtracking. I did nearly every quest, apart from getting a gold in the race and another quest that only completes after you do several other ones... but since I started it near the end of the game I got locked out of it :(

Started Suikoden Tierkreis, and I don't think it's a bad game at all... of course thevoiceactingsuckswiththeleadcharactertalkinglikethis, and it doesn't have much to do with the rest of the Suikoden series. But the prerendered backgrounds are nice, the game actually has some semblance of dungeon design (nice after the terrible dungeons in 3 and 4), music is pretty good too. Storyline definitely seems tailored to a younger crowd and lacks the political intrigue of Suikoden 1-3, but that's alright. I think I might like this better than 4 and maybe even 3, so far...

Also started Earthbound Beginnings. It's definitely grindy as hell, new party members starting back at level 1 and shit... but a super simplistic 8-bit RPG is a breath of fresh air for some reason. Just chill out and do a bit of grindin'... I just got the 3rd party member (the girl), seems like I'm making decent progress.

Playing Midnight Club: Dub Edition: Los Angeles. It's an impressive amount of content, and it feels like a lot of it was used again in GTA V development. I know they're both on RAGE, so that explains much about visual similarity, as well as both being set in southern California.  Racing feels very similar, except collisions are much more forgiving in MC, and the camera is almost hyperactively dynamic. The loading screen also does the same "zoom to an eagle's eye view" stunt, which I had not remembered until coming back to it. I'm not sure how long I'll stick with it. It's good fun, but tuner culture makes me feel old because I made my last racing game in 2005.  :-\

Had my best World of Tanks match ever, with a common Tier V, killing half the other team, and single-handedly capturing their base after a successful sneak-around and sniping their asses from behind. I picked up 3 hard Achievements, and won a 1% Mastery badge, a Top Gun badge, Invader badge, and completed several Ops. I felt like I was on fire, it was epic. This was their Open Beta weekend as they've just launched on Xbox One and somehow are supporting cross-platform play AND chat.

played thru terra and ventus' story in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. game is fun enough but I don't see how fans rank it as the best. well, I guess I could see it since western fans of the series didn't get any of the Final Mixes til recently, but kh2fm is still a better game than this.

the main problem with the game is that due to way your character gains abilities by combining attack commands, you end up using a random moveset throughout the game. battle system feels sloppy and limited as a result. they're fun and all, just not that strategic or challenging.

also unsurprisingly having three separate quests means three shallow stories and lots of recycled content. and FUCK terra. terrible character.

damn it sounds like I'm really downing the game. overall it's fun, just not amazing like the hype had led me to believe.

Its a good thing you left Aqua for last. She's the most fun and overpowered character, arguably has the best story of the three and ties in directly into the game's final chapter (where you also play as her).

yeah now that I know a lot of the good melding combos I should breeze thru this.

I like what I've seen of aqua's character; it's a shame that the story beats up on her so much ("you're awful, aqua") when she's the only responsible one. everything wrong in the story happens because terra and ventus can't stop being selfish dickheads for two seconds and get their shit together.

whew I have been playing these games too much lol

Played some more Rayman Legends. 3rd and 4th world are really creative. Sometimes the game reminds me a bit of the original DKC games (haven't played the newer ones) with how often games are based around a gimmick. Controls are tighter than Origins. This is mostly a good thing, but somhow Origins was more satisfying when you pulled of perfectly timed jumps. Still miss the chase levels.

Finished up Halo 3 via the master chief collection.  Couple of things.

It being 60 frames really helps out this title. I remember how it felt in the original and this is a lot better.
Lighting in the title is very good. I remember people talking about this when it originally came out and it never really struck me but this time around at a better frame rate, it was noticable. Some sections of it look very good.
Very uneven game. The first half of the game is really excellent with really nice combat setups. The second half of the game feels like they ran out of time a bit and were forced to scramble. It's more flood. The graphics actually seem to take a hit in the backgrounds and such. And its generally just less enjoyable outside of the final level.

On to Halo 4.

Things are slowing down in FF14 land, so I've been seeing other games.

Dragonball Xenoverse: Combat is a little jankier than I'd like it to be, but I love love love the character creation and the OC DO NOT STEAL main plot. It feels like playing a DBZ game that's not entirely just a rethread of the series' plot and actually tries to do something new.

I bought the World Tournament announcer shades and they haven't left my character's face since.

J-Stars Victory Vs.+: I like fanservice fighter mashups, and this one is no different. I get a stupid grin on my face just doing silly shit like having a one on one battle of the men between Kenshiro and Jonathan Joestar or having the green SHWING from Kenshin's Amakakeru show up on screen. Its the little things that count.

Wish every character had more moves, but whatever. The local play is kinda poop cause of the overlay it uses for two player, but it works I guess.

Bloodborne: Finally got past the defiled chalice dungeon with the help of a friend. The fire dog and amygdalla were reaaaaaaaaally dumb, but at least the last chalice dungeon doesn't cut my HP in half? Hopefully it'll go down easier.

Blazblue Chronophantasma Extend: Thought I wouldn't be getting this, but my BFF ended up buying it as a birthday present to fuck with me. Really like what they've done with Terumi, Nu and Lambda. Lambda in particular is much closer to my ideal CT/CS combination of the two, so I might use her more.

Still haven't touched the story.

Completed The Last of Us on hard and no listening mode which I was told was the best way to play.

The game was good but there was still a vague feeling of ennui that at times made me feel like I was forcing myself to play it. I don't see myself replaying it.

The writing was much better than Uncharted 2, the other Naughty Dog game I have played.

I hit the random Steam game thing again and it came up Brink.

There's exactly one server left. And it proudly touts this in its name/MoD.

And there were eleven people playing (with the other 5 slots filled out with the bots) with nine of them staying through three map changes.  :o

I asked if anyone was playing or had played Dirty Bomb and got no response. :lol

Had forgotten I had a set of attachments unlocked that turned the one SMG into a burst fire sniper rifle. (Kinda like a rifle I had in Borderlands 2.) Was annihilatin fools and bots. And throwing revives everywhere.  :gun

The bot medic was the only other one on our team doing any medic stuff, we had two other human medics but god forbid they hit F and toss anyone a revive. :dead

Still playing Ultra SFIV.

Went back to Chrono Cross (jp version) and I find myself thinking that I actually might prefer it to Trigger now. It handles changing the past/timelines/universe a lot better, and the story has actual ramifications for your actions rather than just being a straight time travel romp. It's interesting, and it has a lot more to say as a game. Which isn't something I caught on as a teen. Plus, it's making me really nostalgic for when I played it (summer 2002) along with Musashi. We had to vacate the house for six months and live with grandma. That was a damn good summer for me in many ways and this fucking game is bringing it all back! My first kiss, GTAIII, MGS2 over and over and over on every difficulty, living with grandma and grandpa...all that anime and my friends and I scouring Houston for the best arcades, and all that Capcom vs SNK 2. :aah

Been on a musou kick lately.

Sat down and played Dragon Quest Heroes for a good four-plus hours last night. I definitely like it more than the last time I tried it, back in February. Jessica and Yangus from DW8 are awesome and quickly got a permanent spot on my team. Terry also seems good but a bit too similar to the two main characters.

I skipped over a bunch of the side quests and went right to the story stuff. Might as well at least unlock everyone before doing some grinding. Right now the game feels a bit easy anyway. There's not only more tower defense-style stages, but one story level was an escort mission. Fortunately the AI wasn't too dumb and would just stop and wait when monsters popped up.

Glad I didn't sell this off now.

Started up One Piece Kaizoku Musou 3 a week ago.  Had already tried it before and knew it was a very solid game.  I like the partner system, especially for supers, but wish you could still play as your partner briefly like you could in the previous game.  I think I prefer playing this on Vita over PS4.  It's more impressive as a handheld game and seems to have a more consistent framerate, too.

Played a bit of Senran Kagura Estival Versus over the weekend.  I really don't have much left to complete in this game -put in 30+ hours now- but keep holding off on playing it because I really want to have all the DLC characters first.  Ayane from DOA is the next release.  Decided to go ahead and complete the individual character stories for Yomi and Hanabi, playing on the hardest difficulty.  And that is pretty damn hard-- both of these characters have large, powerful weapons and attack very, very slowly, to the point that on some stages I was getting killed before I even had a chance to attack!   Finished Yomi's story but still need to complete Hanabi's.  I stopped playing after getting a glitch where an enemy fell through the floor on one level and I couldn't go to the bottom to kill her and move on.

Also been playing bits of Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 and Sengoku Musou 4-II but I still feel kind of burned out from Samurai Warriors 4.

And as always, been playing fighting games.  Ultra Street Fighter IV and some DOA5 Last Round.  A new patch for the latter is up with balance changes.  A new stage gets released today, too.  I like the support they keep giving this game.

Started playing Hidden: On the Trail of the Ancients. It's a first-person horror adventure game on Steam. You're investigating clues about a Cthulhu cult that a colleague of yours got mixed up in before he died (the title could be a reference to August Derleth's The Trail of Cthulhu). It's pretty good, reminds me of Scratches. The only bad thing is that it's pretty short, about 4-5 hours to beat, I hear (I finished the first half and got all the optional secrets in 2 hours). Supposedly it's Game 1 of 2, but who knows? Also the framerate is garbage for reasons that I can't even fathom.

Finished Castle of Illusion, but I won't be arsed to get all the diamonds. I may get the other collectibles, of which there are 5, 5, and 10, respectively... but there are 800 diamonds, and they aren't even forever.

Metro 2033 self-corrupted the first time I tried to download it, but it seems to have come through nicely on a second attempt.

Finished Halo 4.

The good: That game still looks awesome and it controls really well.

The bad:Everything else.

The story is typically halo confusing. I had no idea what was going on for most of it. More importantly fighting the new enemies simply isn't as fun as facing covenant enemies. They are just annoying. And for most of the game, you are fighting them.

Not much else to say really. Probably give the Spartan Ops, missions a try next.

Spartan Ops missions are just horde mode; not too exciting especially if you didn't like fighting the new enemies

Damn, are Dark Souls 1 & 2 really that long?  I remember Demon Souls being like a 30-50 hour game and Bloodborne was probably about 20-30 hours.  142 hours is a lot of time commitment!

Like for actual content or just achievements and stuff?  If you want to fully explore out all the areas and fight all the bosses these are 100+ hour games?  What makes them so long?  Is there just a ton to do?  Or is there grinding?

All achievements yes. Stuff requires multiple playthrus to get everything. If you just want to see all places and fight all bosses, it wont take that long.

Started Blood Dragon. I am awash in boners. This is the Far Cry sequel we need, but not the sequel we deserve.

Poly Bridge

it's another bridge building game. i think it's unique in that some of the levels require you to deal with boats by building over their path or creating drawbridges.

it's what you expect. still fun.

I'm still messing with the iOS bridge-building game, Bridgy Jones. It's my first and probably last bridge building game, as I hate the way so many collapse before I even put any weight on them. It creeps me out.
