I was reading some reddit threads on ending/storyline takes and thought this was interesting in its connection plotwise to Dishonored:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The game is a Dishonored Spinoff and takes place in the Dishonored world after Dishonored 2 Death of the Outsider

Time for me to get back to Dishonored 2 now!

I just finished the second castle in Tales of Arise and I'm thinking of dropping the game.

All the issues people have with the bad Tales games are still present in this one but the graphics and combat are marginally better. Characters are still designed for cosplayers and still barely talk about anything but plot exposition. The music is still forgettable and towns/dungeons are still static with flavorless NPCs. This series after Vesperia really reminds me of Final Fantasy XIII. Maybe the dev team is made up of those weirdos that constantly comment online about how that game was a misunderstood masterpiece.

I'm going to give it one more session before I drop it, Maybe it gets better. But right now I'm really not understanding the buzz behind this entry.

Finished Deathloop. Most addictive game I've played in a long time.

Definitely highly recommend the game. Either now if you got PS5 or in a year when it's on Game Pass on XSX. Even with the flaws it's my favorite Arkane game so far.

Thanks for the impressions. Was kind of on the fence about whether it'd be something I'd like despite enjoying the Dishonored series (wasn't a fan of Prey really) and this post helped.

Yeah, the easiest way to recommend/not recommend Deathloop is honestly to compare it to the modern Hitman trilogy.  If you like the recent Hitman's levels and replaying them and figuring out routes and discovering new shortcuts/notes things constantly and making up their own pathing strategies, you'll enjoy Deathloop because the majority of it is that same concept and feeling. If that's not your thing, well, probably wouldn't enjoy Deathloop.

The assassinations themselves fwiw aren't really like Hitman. It's more the levels & their secrets, which are hugely complex, are. The targets are pretty linear. One thing I would've done better if I was Arkane was going a lot more unique kill opportunities for the targets similar to Hitman.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 (Xbox/GamePass)

Sequel has so many great QoL improvements that theres no reason to even recommend the first game to people.

Recommended if you want a chill game, great pick on GamePass

I think the reasons why you dislike it are the reasons I like it. It really is my comfy game as of late.

- The world/level design is fairly simple
- Most quests don't take too long and take place in the area
- You can just mash some buttons at the right time and cool shit happens
- There's a few systems like creating items from mined ore but you can ignore those
- Doesn't look like enemies scale (at least not in story quests)

You're basically OP in the story from the moment you get that Blazing Sword.
Depending on how deep you want to dive into the systems and how the story progresses I would say this is a 8/10 game at best.
Style over substance mostly.

But when compared to say Xenoblade 2 (which I'm also playing) this is just much more accessible overall.
If you want a game with a seemingless endless combination of items, skills, fighting styles, combo's etc. Xenoblade 2 has that covered in spades.
As well as a world where you can spend 20 minutes moving from one quest marker to the next, figuring out how to work your way through the environment without getting killed by a random lvl 40 monster.

Tales of Arise in comparison is just a very pretty (and it does look very pretty) SNES RPG. Not all that different from the Trials of Mana remake I played a while ago.
I've played very few Tales games but I think the GameCube one had more complex battle systems and world design than this one.
But all that said, this game is very enjoyable and well made for what it is.

Aragami 2: Only just started it, but the developers have made some nice improvements over the original game.  Movement and jumping abilities feel better.  The first game was pure stealth and getting caught pretty much meant you had to restart a section.  In the sequel, combat has been added and you can now choose to fight or run away and hide.  The game feels a lot more Tenchu-like now, which is a good thing.  It also has online co-op multiplayer.

I have had a VERY hard time getting into new online FPS games the last 10 years, CSGO was just perfect for me. Valorant, Battlefield, CoD, TitanFall, tried so many games and never really loved them.

But hell let loose is really doing it for me right now. It can be extremely slow, there is no hit indicators, no kill confirmed text or anything. But it's so much fun anyway. I still am not entirely sure what I am doing most of the time, but I can recommend it. There's a free beta on ps5 right now for another week I think, if anyone wants to check it out there. I am playing on PC though. Community been real friendly helping me along as a new player too, just an overall great experience. To give an idea of how I have gotten kills or what it's like:

Hiding behind my friends dead body to get a kill

this cunt getting blown up at the end

I just beat the giant wolf at the end of the snow forest and honestly, I definitely see your point. While I am having a lot of fun with the game and appreciate how the combat is much less spammy than Berseria and the environments/dungeons don't drag on for way longer than necessary (like Berseria), the towns and NPCs don't feel as full-of-life as other RPGs, even Berseria. And the sidequests are garbage "give me 5 amount of X item" or "kill 7 wolves" BS... even Berseria was much better in that way (especially the character-focused ones). Story hasn't dragged me into it like Berseria immediately did. So the game as a whole feels one step forward, one step back in some regards. I'm shocked at the massive amount of praise it's getting, it seems that adding nice graphics to your slightly-above-average RPG is all that it takes.

hell let loose
This has had a few free weekends and sales on Steam.

The one free weekend I followed this dude around a town thinking he knew what he was doing. Nope. We somehow circled like half the map in confusion and wound up behind the enemy. When I realized that I hid by some barrels and started taking potshots at them, while he just ran up to them and tried to fight directly and got wasted. Eventually I got into a house and was able to get a bunch of free kills taking out people as they retreated as my team pushed the line back. That was the most effective thing I did other than spotting most of the weekend. :lol

Actually, the coolest thing is I got trapped sorta, and went prone in a dugout and kept spotting this tank that had driven up right next to me as it was all I could see as I was waiting for it to move on. Eventually all these shots come from our side of the map and it blows up. Then like two of our tanks and a whole squad of guys comes running through and I got to stand back up and join them.

Castlevania GBA Collection is excellent. These games are as good as ever. The QoL stuff M2 put in with rewind and encyclopedia for drops is nice, but mostly it just looks and plays well. Wouldn't be surprised if I end up replaying all three. They're pretty short and hard to put down. Really enjoyed all six of the GBA/DS igavanias even if some were weaker than others. Hopefully they do a Vol.2 with the DS games and it's not too far out.

I played through Fillmore in Actraiser Renaissance and... ehhh. I got it for Switch being unaware it was also coming to all other platforms, and the game runs like shit in the sidescroller sections (very low and sluggish framerate). They also added some more tutorials and greatly expanded the town building sections with... ughhh... mandatory tower defense sections. These drag out the town-building (in the first town there were 4 such sections), along with stuff like only being able to defeat one monster lair at a time and having to wait until certain triggers happen before you can move on. Also your level ups aren't based on population but rather by a meter that fills up after doing 'quests' like 'collect some logs to build forts'.

I'll play it a little bit at a time while in between Arise sessions but it's not anything special, fans of the original shouldn't really bother. The remixed music is fantastic, at least.

3 out of 8 Metroidvanias and Rondo without the remake is just weak. :snore The first CV collection was way more attractive. Even if you don't want to put the effort into tweaking the DS games, there's no excuse for lacking SotN.

I don't have an original Aria, so I might buy a physical version if it happens, considering how much cheaper than an used GBA copy it would be.

It's not quite the same, but check out Smelter for something (that seems to be, based on your impressions of Actraiser) better.

I would buy a physical collection for sure, then maybe sell off the GBA copies I have.  Can certainly see Limited Run Games doing this.

I definitely wish the DS games were on there.  I don't really get Dracula X's inclusion, but more games is a good thing.  Half-tempted to buy this , but I've already played through Aria multiple times, finishing Harmony once was enough, and while I didn't finish Circle Of The Moon, I got to the last boss fight and I don't think I'd play through it again.  Would pick this up for half price though.

Since I got my RetroTink I've been wanting to play some older games now - October seems like a good enough time to jump in and play some horror/spooky games.

Finished "Run Like Hell" which is an Alien scifi story starring Lance Henriksen (sounds familiar) where an unknown alien life form begins taking over your space station (sounds familiar).
Despite being called "Run Like Hell" you don't do much running like hell, you just stand there and shoot dumb aliens.

Also the space station is littered with BAWLS(tm) energy drink machines, and PIP BOY(tm) Protein Bars

During the game you get treated to BANGERS from HOT ROCK BAND Breaking Benjamin, which are also mixed in random parts of the game which is funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxSWP5s4McI

https://youtu.be/ap0xN0LMxj4?t=547

Apparently the game was intended to be more "Resident Evil" but went through development hell and wound up being a generic shooting game and more MOVIE LIKE.
It also ends on a cliff hanger as it was meant to be a trilogy of sorts. Oh well!

Quote
According to Brian Freyermuth, the lead designer of Run Like Hell,[1] the production did not go smoothly. During its five-year run, the team went through two executive producers, three producers, three lead programmers and two lead artists. They started out with the idea of Resident Evil in space, but this was changed abruptly by upper management from survival horror to an action game. As a result, the alien enemies were weakened and made more numerous. In the end, the game was scrapped by management again and development restarted less than a year before the release date. The game's actual programming was done in the space of only ten months, even though the game was in production for five years; this is why the story and characters seem well established, whereas the gameplay feels rushed and incomplete.[2] The game was also meant to be part of a trilogy, as is obvious by the cliffhanger ending.

The Mercury Steam one  :doge :doge I mean, it can't be worse than SNES Rondo? Which is in there for some reason. Also, I just remembered that they could've included the multiplayer one from XBLA...

There were omissions in the first collection, but it was overall very solid and covered most classics and several obscure games. Which is why I ordered the LRG version, despite already having it digital. I would say SotN, Aria, Dawn and OoE are considered the best by Iga and they only have one of them in this one :idont

LOL, yes it can.  SNES Dracula X is fine on its own.  I remember starting the 3DS game and thinking it might be OK, but it quickly got bad.  It was like they tried to make it more of a 2D God Of War clone and it wasn't very good.

Started Kena last night. Really enjoying it so far. It's simple, but a very solid, fun game with tons of attention to detail. Soundtrack is wonderful and charming just like the animation quality. Story is a bit bare bones like the gameplay, but it's all very cohesive and fun.. Definitely impressed with Emberlab.  Game just moves along without any bloat.

I feel like Psychonauts 2 probably will end up being my GoTY. Pretty far in and the writing and VA is incredibly good. And the budget just keeps impressing me. New assets after new assets, tons of character models, amazing animation for everything. It's insane what a good budget can do! Definitely feeling like this is the best thing Double Fine has done by leaps and bounds.

That's not Dark Souls, that's just shitty design.  :maf
Even Dark Souls hard saves every time you beat a boss.

Kena goes back to the "put on wishlist and wait for sale and then never actual play it" list.
If by Dark Souls you mean some of these bosses will make you want to throw the controller at the screen, then yeah.  Don't let the game's aesthetic fool you.  So far this has been a solid 8 game.

Although it crashed twice on me last night at a certain spot. Could use another patch or two.  (Which they've updated twice already since launch, so they've been on it)

Warioware talk got me to pick up Ultimate NES Remix, which I swear I played back when it first came out, but I don't see it on my shelf and I'm not hooking my Wii U back up and the 3DS version was $15 so whatever.

Anyhow, this game is pretty boring  :-\

What I like about Warioware and Rhythm Heaven is that the mini-games are short fun pops of gaming. Like 5-15 seconds and perfect for the modern generation of ADHD mental drug pop happiness.

But these are like ...long? "Run through 1-1 of Mario" isn't very fun or exciting compared to short pops of the other games. Although I do like that through the mini-missions you learn tips & tricks of these old games and actually become better at them. Like I'm ok at Donkey Kong but I've never known what half the pickups do. I just know how to jump barrels and hammer them.

But yeah, this seems pretty dull and lacks the fun excitement of the other games. I have and played Retro Game Challenge on DS which was like the precursor to this but with more obscure weird Japanese games iirc and that was a lot more interesting than playing Dr. Mario in pieces.

Also do the games not have remix stages? Hell does Warioware even have remix stages or am I just confusing this all with Rhythm Heaven series? You know, boss stages that are a single stage that mix in all the mini-games from the latest tier into one long 1-2 minute stage where you use all the skills you've built up on that mini-game tier to conquer an extended remix of them boss stage?

Because this has a pillar for "Remix" but uh, they're just single stages from one of the games so far and not like a mix of multiple games together.

Anyhow this is just making me want to go back and replay the Rhythm Heaven series which looking back on this mini-ware titles seems like the best of them.

But I did just get Warioware Gold in the mail today, so I'll give that a shot and see if it fulfills my needs a bit more.

Aaaand I spent an hour getting my Wii U out of storage and locating the power cable for the fat tablet and yeah I owned and played NES Remix on that which is why this feels familiar. Seems I got bored of it about as quickly as I got bored of the 3DS version last night going by my progress!

I guess since I have the Wii U hooked up, maybe it's time to play those couple of Wii U games not on Switch like .......

I think the only two Wii U games in my backlog that aren't on Switch are Kirby & The Rainbow Curse and Yoshi's Wooly World. The latter isn't especially great, and I tried playing some Kirby and uhh, I loved the drawing a line Kirby back on DS but in 2021 on Wii U the controls are pretty annoying. Was over it in a stage. Also there's zero reason this couldn't be on Switch since the TV is worthless and you just use the tablet controller. Surprised they haven't ported it.

So basically, zero reason to keep the Wii U hooked up. Back in storage it goessss

WiiU still has:

- The only (((legal))) means of playing Earthbound Zero
- Paper Mario Cum Splash
- Wind Waker HD
- Twilight Princess HD
- StarFox Zero (+Guard)
- Xenoblade Chronicles X
- Yoshi Wooly World
- Kirby Rainbow Curse

and I guess:

- Whatever one off games there are (NintendoLand, Game & Wario, etc)
- Wii BC

Yoshi is on 3DS and the Zelda where they originally came out.
