From g4tv

Quote
Other Kitase tidbits include the fact that the Xbox 360 version is really, really early in development. He said that up until the Japanese demo, the efforts have been on the PlayStation 3 only. He gave a non-answer when asked about downloadable content, saying only that DLC is being considered. Considering his concern for gamers without hard drives, I wouldn't expect much (if the decision is up to him...which it might not be).

http://e3.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/696154/Final-Fantasy-XIII-E3-2009-Preview-Shiva-Turns-Into-A-Frickin-Motorcycle.html

But you have to be crazy to believe that FFXIII on MS conf was running on anything else except 360.

Because if they couldn't get it running in two months than they can't get it running in two years. Seriously though, wasn't the "white engine" designed for both the 360 and PS3?

No.  White Engine was PS3 and they turned into Crystal Tools which is PS3/X360/Wii.

Behind the scenes it's probably a mess so it'll be like porting games last gen designed for one system and then port it over to the other system and try to optimize it.

Huh. I thought I'd misremembered that, because who'd make a free game like that?

So it's a tool to promote XBL Gold membership, and sell DLC items? Neat.

Now I'm wondering if they'll let users who have unlocked modes and maps share with other players who haven't yet, the same way that Crackdown handled their additional items and modes by putting them in a Title Update, and only putting the unlock code in the paid DLC.

Eurogamer: I'm trying to understand how much of this comes from Lionhead and how much comes from Microsoft...

Peter Molyneux: A lot of stuff, like the voice recognition stuff, is based on things like Windows 7 technology. We just went round and took all that stuff and fitted it together. The interesting thing is, a lot of that stuff existed without reason - and when you bring it all together with something like this, it kind of works.

Eurogamer: So what can Milo do?

Peter Molyneux: Milo can recognise the emotions on your face and the emotions in your voice. He can recognise certain words you say. You can have conversations with him, you can read stories to him. We're trying to bring all these things together. Some of them are tricks - I'll be absolutely honest with you - to make you believe Milo's real.

Eurogamer: You said he only understands certain words. So presumably you can't have a conversation about the situation in Palestine?

Peter Molyneux: The number of words he understands is built up over time. For Claire [the lady who demoed a conversation with Milo during Microsoft's conference], it's something like 500 words.

But we haven't cracked the real problem, which is him understanding the meaning of it all. He'll give you the illusion he does that. The interesting thing is you can only talk to him when the Talk icon appears at the bottom of the screen. That's when he's listening to you; the rest of the time, he's not. He's listening to you because there's a context in which you can talk to him.

One of the journalists who came in before you had obviously read up on the Turing test. He asked Milo one of the questions in the test - 'Do you remember when we met yesterday?' Well, of course, we haven't cracked the Turing test. If we had, then applying it to a computer game would be the last of the solutions we'd use it for.

seems pretty clear to me, they just took the existing stuff in Windows and put it together to make a (non-)game product.  i don't see the deception.

And Molyneux told the entire fucking world this in an interview on June 2.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/e3-project-natals-molyneux-and-milo-interview

He lays it out that it's a combination of things to make you BELIEVE that he's real. The only smoke a mirrors here are the ones the gametrailers guy wants you to believe are there.

The day after the conference.

It's not a big deal. I mean, if Sony showed a product that didn't exist I'm sure the MS apologists here would have the same attitude toward them.... amiright?

Of course it wasn't real (real creepy, maybe), whoever thought that was being pretty naive.

If  it can recognize specific tones and map facial expressions, that's good enough to pull off some clever illusions, and good enough for things like hand signals during games.

And it is pretty subtle, there was a hands-on on one of the blogs where the writer tried the burnout paradise mockup, and it was sensitive enough to pick up all the driving pantomime motions.

But, like I wrote on GAF - I heard Todd Howard on ListenUp the other day, and when they asked him about the Xaggle he seemed diplomatic, but you could hear the "Meh" in his voice.  I knew then that I'd never get the chance to have a psychotic staredown contest with a Raider (in my imagination the raider awkwardly breaks eye contact after a few seconds and sheepishly hands over all his drugs). :(

I also knew that about wraps it up for Natal, really.  I think a lot of devs are going to feign excitement or interest over both this and the Saggle, but in the end we'll all just be playing kickball, writing our names in the air, and slinging imaginary paint around while wishing we'd saved our money.  I've sort of done a 180 in my excitement for these motion controllers. They aren't going to be used, not for anything we're even remotely interested in playing.  Maybe next-gen, when MS puts the processors from the Natal unit inside each neXtBox system, and Sony packs in a wand or two with each PS4.

If there are a minimum of three games I'd want to play for each motion system at launch, I'll buy them.  Otherwise I'll wait until there are.  I suspect I'm going to be waiting several years.

I think the most popular use for both saggle and xaggle will just be what waggle is doing; improved aiming stuff and some motion use for traditional games.  I still don't mind that.  Aiming using the Wii remote is a lot more accurate than dual analog for me, even if turning isn't as quick or smooth.  KB/M is still the ideal setup for shooters.

And anyone who believes saggle and xaggle will ever be used for anything more than a gimmick is delusional. Xaggle will be use for stuff like milo or that brick breaking game, but don't count on IW using it in mW2 or whatever.

When MS packs it in with Halo 4, it will be a one xaggle future.

Natal on Good Morning America.  It's also supposed to be on Jimmy Fallon's show tonight.

Looks a lot more wonky here than it did at E3, but for the most part that ricochet game looks to play fine even in that setting.

Yeah putting a foot forward really improves the driving experience.  Pretending to hold nothing is better.  Also having no acceleration and only one speed combined with no tactile feedback definitely improves the experience.

I'm sure they'll figure out at least a handful of good games for Natal, like they did with the Wii.  A good Breakout-style game could be fun if you feel like jumping around.

I don't think an online-enabled game is just going to get Natal controls patched in after release.  Natal only seems to detect fairly broad movements (even compared to the wiimote w/o the M+).  The camera's also limited at 30 hz framerate so that might affect certain games a little.

I think we'll see EA or another major publisher roll out some new waggle IP's or even a sports series that make use of all three motion devices.  There might be enough of a hardcore/mature market for it now but the wiimote shows that any waggle-game can't be fun unless it's designed around the controller's strengths and weaknesses.

Did MS say anything about Natal's cost yet?

Pachter said on gametrailers that Natal should cost around $60, if it is mass produced for launch day.

I fear MS could go down the Nintendough route however and constrain production to keep demand and prices high.

Xaggle/Saggle will be worth it for me when Konami ports Police 911 to the 360 or PS3. The Wii doesn't have the ability to do the leaning stuff like the xaggle and saggle do.
