I finished AD 4 and 5, so I've been reverse-binging Robot Chicken. I've religiously memorized season 1-4, but have barely seen 5-8 (corresponded with my move to Boston and becoming an Adult™.) I got back to s4 so I've been doing some research and found Sweet J Presents, AKA "Robot Chicken Season Zero." It was an online show for Sony in like 2002 (which explains Sony Pictures producing RC for seasons 1-5.)

It's actually pretty cool how, like, even the latest episodes are pretty consistent with this style. Sure there's only so much you can do with stop motion toys, but the sense of humor, timing, and even animation quality is pretty damn good for a short-lived web show.

Amazingly, even with 12 of these episodes as reference material, basically every network and comedy sketch show under the sun rejected Robot Chicken until Seth McFarlane referred them to AS. And the rest is history.

I also had no idea Seth and Sarah Michelle Gellar have been friends since childhood, I thought she was just on the show a lot because they remained friends since Buffy (similar to Seth and Mila Kunis.) Speaking of, SMG and Kunis are credited in almost every single episode under bizarre titles (in addition to getting credited when they voice a character.) :lol

S4 of iZombie is up on netflix. :rejoice

Mediocre season, final season is up early next year :fbm

Ravi is still the best character, Liv's "brains" were annoying this season and social studies creep to pile on the shite.

I'll just re-watch the first three seasons. :rejoice

Killing Eve is possibly the funniest show on television. Way funnier than Barry.

Just started this, it’s good so far 👍🏻

It gets so good, especially towards the end.

Soundtrack is killer too.

Watched episode 3 last night

Hopefully the back half of AD s5 makes up for the first half. I'm still trying to keep an open mind since s4 got quite a bit better as it went on and all the threads started connecting, but with s5.1 being in the "traditional" format I'm not sure how well that excuse will work.

Big props to Westworld for getting dumber and more needlessly confusing every single week with ease.

WTF episode did you just watch? Last ep was probably the best self-contained story yet, while still filling out minor but important plot threads along the way.

This happens everytime. Genre show gets prestige tv trappings that fool a lot of ppl, they get sucked in and by the second season they realize they're just watching a syfy show but with 10x the money and talent.

I'm always more in the middle when it comes to the Westworld. I do think the show is slightly over-rated and the amount of critical attention the show gets relative to its quality is also slightly inflated.

But I also don't think its the dumpster fire show some people think it is.

My main complaint has now become more how the show seems to love its big moments but then characters start acting like dumbasses allowing them loopsholes to evade or get out of the situation. All shows do this, but in a show as contrived constructed as Westworld you can predict how the show will cheat itself out of these moments before they happen so that's kinda disappointing. The show is still certainly watchable and enjoyable even if it mostly feels like a never-ending litany of lucy pulling the football away before Charlie Brown can kick it moments.

It's cool that they spell out what the ghost nation is and cover some of the Maeve stuff but it didn't need to take an entire hour to get there. It's the best episode of the season so far because it was almost completely removed from every other storyline, which are all varying degrees of stupid or boring, but it took it's sweet fucking time. Always enjoy seeing Hanzee get screen time though

Ultimately I think there are two shows that kind of inherited the mantle of the type of TV show Lost was. Mysteries, misleading the audience, playing with the time line, etc.

Mr. Robot and Westworld.

All three shows remind me of each other in various ways despite plot wise having nothing to do with each other.

I think Westworld has gotten so popular because its like the cable version of Lost that came around at just the right time. I think Mr. Robot is a bit too artsy and weird (especially after the first season) in a way that Westworld isn't to capture the sort of mainsteam attention Westworld does.

lol I like all three.

But I hear you that the first season of each is the one that makes the most sense if story flow is important to a person. That first season being the best is very common with TV shows since they make up so much of it as they go. The first season tends to be the most planned one by comparison.

I liked the entire run of Veronica Mars but it never got close to the plotting of that first season again.

I watched about 7 episodes of Cobra Kai last night and I liked it.

It feels a bit amateurish at times, and there are occasionally some shots that look like they were designed primarily to save money.

However, the choreography is surprisingly decent and it has a ton of 80s rock music. And Danny Larussos wife is quite hot.

YouTube TV added Starz. Since I already re-marathoned Spartacus two years ago, is there anything worthwhile on Starz outside the latest season of Ash vs. Evil Dead? (The prior seasons are already on Netflix.)

Something produced by Sam Raimi would be choice, obvs.

Netflix actually picked up Lucifer :lol

and they ordered it as a shortened 10-episode season like i mentioned earlier would probably fit the slowly evolving format of the show better as it seemed like they were really stretching the arc plot across the number of episodes Fox wanted...i have to imagine the procedural stuff gets shunted even more to the side in favor of the arcs since Netflix won't care about having single episodes anyone can watch with a case of the week

might even get some multi-episode cases instead rather than everything wrapped up at the 38 minute mark of the episode, more challenging human murderers plus the supernatural and occult

now to be disappointed like when Arrested was "saved" amirite!

So just watched the season finale of Westworld.

My first instinct is that I didn't like it much and it's sort of an amalgamation of all the little elements and flaws of Season 2 that I didn't like. In fact as a whole I like that particular episode less than the bulk of Season 2 which I mostly enjoyed as I watched it.

That final episode is like seeing a magic trick. And when you don't know how the magic trick is performed, its kind of cool because your mind comes up with all these theories and fixates on all these elements of the trick that seem neat in a vacuum. But when the trick is actually explained to you the magic is gone. It's just oh you had a lady in both sides of the box before you sawed it in half. That's kinda lame.

That finale felt like that. It wants to be epic. It wants to blow your mind. But when most of it feels forced and only one of the little pieces of it actually seems like a good twist, it feels a bit underwhelming.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also don't really get how you move forward without fundamentally changing the very nature of the show. Being in a park and doing Westworld, Samurai World, etc seems completely old hat after that finale. I feel like that world is now pointless and doing more of it is just spinning wheels. And I'm fine with changing that up completely. But I have a feeling that a lot of people tune into that show for western alternate reality shenanigans every week. If you don't give them that they are going to be disappointed. And I'm going to be disappointed if it is the same old shenanigans.
[close]

I'll probably go into more detail about specific bits I liked/didn't like about that finale and season when I have a little more time tomorrow. I know everything I said here is very general and that is partially so as not to accidentally spoil anything since I know not everybody has seen it yet. Also to give myself so time to think about it.

i didn't think it was very satisfying but i've made no secret of my distaste for this show, especially season 2. it was not nearly as bad as some of the earlier episodes, but dolores' motivations are still so dumb. she wants to destroy humanity based on a sample size of a few million of the worlds most wealthy sadists. she thinks the 'real world' is so much better than the 'gilded cage' she's trapped in (and hates it so much she's willing to kill the hosts who are perfectly content to stay in robot xanadu - whatever) yet her very existence is the result of humans desire for escapism for the 'real' world. shit there's probably a sizable number of people who would throw themselves headfirst into the singularity the second they got the chance

That WestWorld Season 2 finale was the truest form of the word "convoluted" but still, even saying that it's an entertaining and well done show. The Matrix references and influences are all over it, and i love that.

I'm still in for Season 3 despite it being an average show at best.

I've hinted at it before but my biggest problem with the show isn't any specific plot point or any specific characterizations.

It's more that at no moment does the show not ever feel like this overly constructed thing that the writers are writing strictly for their enjoyment versus the enjoyment of the audience. It just feels so artificial. I never feel like the characters actually do what the characters want to do themselves. It's all an elaborate writers excercise to create the most convoluted plot you can to try to fool the audience.

Ultimately it just leaves me feeling cold towards the show. Especially the second season. At least I was invested in the mystery of the first season. The second season I could have honestly cared less about the over-arching mystery. The only thing to really ground it for me was the motivation and emotion of characters. But then like I said, the characters feel like such puppets of the writers that it steals away from that.

The 3rd season would be a perfect time to break away from this artificial kind of storytelling, but I have a feeling that is what the show is truly in its heart. I have a feeling they would struggle to tell a natural story without all the little tricks.
