I'm coming around to the position that Iron Bro Fist is savagely mediocre as a takedown of the unremarkable privileged white man. e.g. I'm watching an episode from season 2 right now where Danny and Ward think arranging a dinner party will resolve a huge conflict between characters. Everyone pretends to be polite even though they hate each other until it goes tits up too, a terminal cactivity if ever there was one.

Yeah, this is exactly what the show is about. (Finished season 2, albeit somewhat distracted throughout.)

I was initially taken aback by the time skip in The Deuce's second season, and was definitely disappoint at the da gawd Curtis Mayfield being replaced by mediocre ass Elvis Costello for an intro, but the show utilizes the time skip very well.

But now with the time skip it's obvious they're leading to AIDS and the crack epidemic of the late 80's. Which is a little annoying to me but seeing as the show is as well acted, well written and amazingly done as it was in the first season still I'm not going to complain too much.

You shouldn’t be surprised, boy. They said this when the show first came out. Maybe it’s time to learn to read and stop livin off that pretty dick.

They’re both pretty good messes, Hotel slightly more so because it looks awesome. The first episode or so of Cult is a little cringey because of the on-the-nose political stuff, but it may be intentional.

Iron Fist season 2 ended with him giving the Iron Fist to his gf (she's bi) who was a mid-level flunkie in the fucking Hand and fucking off to Southeast Asia with his drug addict sort-of brother to find himself because K'un-Lun fell to the Hand after he abandoned it to go be a failson in New York City. Good call on letting it die there.

it wasn't cancelled, it was never intended to go beyond a set number of seasons, it's a film script that got expanded into a series

esmail just didn't know back at the start what seasons would be which act beyond the first season being the first act, last season kinda obviously left us at the start of the final act

I’m not sure I bought the “it was a movie” thing after season 2. Or season 1 for that matter, but season 1 was so good that I was willing to swallow whatever Esmail said. The disastrous season 2 showed he had no idea what he was doing, not even a semblance of a plan. If it was originally a movie script, it was only the first quarter of a page of a spec script.

He actually had only written 90 pages when he decided to cut what he had up for the pilot episode and his outline for story beats of the first season.

Season two and three were pretty blatantly written out and then separated into episodes for me. He's also let one of the main editors move scenes between episodes. It's a vastly more coherent show when consumed as full season chunks than as the episodes drip out.

I can maybe buy that, but I’m not going to put it to the test because there’s no way I’d sit through season 2 again in some vague hope that it would be a little better if I Ludovico Technique my way through it all at once.

You know, I think season two might be my favorite, despite the extra amounts of Dom in season three. Queen Darlene certainly gets all the best bits in it. Dalia Oprah has come a long way since Chatswin.

Season two's back-reveal is still a top favorite, maybe the top favorite:

Elliott forgetting who Darlene is in season one is simpler and probably smarter/more clever, but it didn't upend two entire seasons (arguably three) like this did.

I’m afraid of getting excited about the Watchmen HBO series. I feel that while Lindelof can be a decent writer, his philosophy of “explanations and cohesion are not priority” is not adequate for a Watchmen adaptation.

I don't think he'd graft that kind of thinking onto a show like Watchmen since it isn't fundamentally about "a mystery".

But there is a mistery. Is not the fundamental theme but is still a backbone, part of the structure of that story.
