Enjoying the hell out of American Gods. I didn't get into it in the first episode, but it has grown on me. Ian McShane isn't the only good actor in it. Gillian Anderson is stunning, Stormare's Czernobog is fabulous, and even the damned leprechaun is growing on me. I've liked Emily Browning since the first Unfortunate Events movie, and she is pushing all my "bad for you woman" buttons.

For all the production problems the show seems to have/had I enjoyed the dream like quality of the first season and I'm looking forward to the second. Great cast as you said, everyone pulling their weight too.

So. Good.

Also just finished Gaiman's Norse Mythology this morning, and it's great to see how his enthusiasm for the research has informed his American interpretations of those gods.

Caught up on Brooklyn 99. One of those shows, like always sunny, that I love having on in the background. There are so many gags that you can tune in and out and find something to laugh about.

Also Santiagos reaction to the microwave was fucking hilarious. They really turned her into a goofball over the course of the seasons in the best way.

Started True Detective Season 3 because none of my friends and co-workers dared after 2.

First episode was tense and well acted. Feels more like the first season already. Hopefully it stays on point

Russian Doll on Netflix which I guess is supposed to be that high concept sophisticated dark comedy except it's not very funny (way too New York elite first world humor, think Master of None but even more pretentious) and it's not that clever either, it doesn't really a lot with its premise to pace itself or surprise you. You're probably better off with Maniac, which is certainly more lavish, distinctive and touching. But still, it's ok, perfectly watchable and the lead performances are fine, especially if you like Natasha Lyonne.

Also Rocky's stepbrother is in it.

Watched the first 10 ep of Punisher season 2.

God the writing in these Marvel shows is such cookie cutter shit, and it meanders so fucking much... but i keep watching, so it's doing something right.

3 particular notes:
  • I find it funny how they play up Billy's scars, like he was fucking Joseph Merrick, when it's just a couple of cuts, also lol at that arts&crafts mask.
  • I was hoping he'd pork the therapist from the first scene :doge, so i'm happy with where that went.
  • My "Christian Comicbook Baddie Bingo Card" was almost filled up with the new bad guy (though he's off screen for 60% of the run time), i just needed a "baptism-in-the-river-that-turns-into-a-drowning" scene to win it all (i did guess the self flagellation tho).

Finished Punished s2.
"Thank God Frank didnt actually kill those hookers!".
The mental gymnastics this show goes through are genuinely endearing.
But after watching this, I think Marvel pulling these shows may have actually being a mercy kill.
These jokers have gone on 3 seasons (I'm including daredevil s2) with Castle grunting about the same exact shit non stop.
[Unintelligible]: "Let me do what I do best", follows him stuttering 20 minutes about his wife, as he punches another fat drunk biker to death.
3 seasons and this guy still hasn't gone through one character arc.

Pro tip: if you want to have a show about a psycho vigilante, dont bother bending over backwards to show us he's actually a good boy.
Why would you even try to adapt something like the Punisher, if you are being a coward about it?

Netflix officially cancelled:
- The Punisher
- Jessica Jones (a 3rd and final season is completed and will be released)

Thus ending their Marvel partnership. Disney+ seems to be focused on 'family friendly' entertainment so it is not likely they'll bring these franchises back.

The scene where they play it is pretty good, along with a lot of the other musical numbers. Probably doesn't redeem the liberties taken with the source material, I can't say. Producers just liked it better that way.

True Detective S3 - one ep left I guess? Show kinda mediocre now. Not actively terrible but just dragging and not really doing anything interesting with the premise. Characters aren't really growing much. Pretty much gave away a bunch and is just a wait for the final explanations now. Still stand by my guess halfway through that

Yeah, for sure. I'm almost definitely out on the series after this season finishes next week. S3 isn't actively insulting like S2 but it takes an interesting mystery setup from the first ep1 and turns it into a ho-hum generic procedural. I can see why Saulnier had creative differences in the direction of the show and left after 2 eps.

The main reason I've decided to not watch S3 is due to Saulnier walking away. Pizzamans narcissistic actions in a very collaborative medium is such a turn off. He's actively working against a possible recreation of S1 'cause of pure ego.

Got American Gothic (the 95 series) on dvd on a whim after thinking about the show every now and then for like 20 years after watching the show as a kid. I can't remember anything about it but I've loved Gary Cole ever since so it'll be worth the watch for him alone  8) Three eps in and I love every scene he's in, also this cheesy 90s nostalgia maaaannn

I have to do the same to Earth 2 some day, just for Clancy Brown and the creepy ass terrians that freaked me out as a kid  :lol

I've only seen five episodes of True Detective S3, good to know that I can keep my expectations low for the rest of the season. I never watched S2 since I heard it was ass and the cast was just so uninteresting to me but I thought I'd give the new season a chance. It's already annoying me in some ways but just a few eps left so what the hell.

TD was always pretty mediocre, in my opinion.
I only watched season 1, which is the most beloved one, and aside from the two big stars "lowering" themselves for television (not even that special now) and a big director behind the whole seaso (also not that special), it was basically a collection of genre clichès and bad cheesy dialogue.
It did have nice cinematography, but again, many shows do nowadays.

I meant having a big director at the helm, in itself, isn't something special anymore, because plenty of shows have had that, Fincher, Spielberg or something like The Knick, which was 100% directed by Soderbergh (which i'd argue, is a bigger name than Fukunaga).

It was still prestige television, don't get me wrong, but in that realm, it was quite mediocre (mostly due to the script).

I have 90 mins (3 eps) left in Russian Doll and I just don't know if I can bring myself to finish this. I felt this way 3 eps in but then they added a twist and I wanted to see if it would make the show better.

The problem is the script is awwwwwwwfuuuuuul. It's such a frustrating watch because the characters act completely illogical because the script is such shit.
Like this is probably the worst nonsensical script I've seen in a long time. It makes Kingdom Hearts look good.

On one hand I am slightly curious to see how the story ends,
on the other hand I can do better things in my life in 90 mins.

Hmmmm....

Absolutely would not recommend this show.

True Detective Season 3 is ok overall, but it lost steam fast after the first 3 or 4 episodes which I really liked.
At this point the past 3 episodes haven't moved things forward a whole lot.

Still if you liked Season 1 I still recommend it. It has some of that vibe but it comes up short in the writing department.

And yes, I think the conclusion is that he knew and was told what had happened (the wife 'sold' the girl to the Hoyt family) but that he had to keep it a secret from everyone else (Roland, his wife etc.) and has forgotten that he knew.
because otherwise they'd nail them on the murder of the Hoyt security guy. Cover up after cover up made things more of a mess. Hays left the force in disgust because he had no choice but to keep everything a secret and couldn't tell Roland to protect him.

This set-up would actually makes sense looking at Hays' behavior. From the get to we learn he likes to keep secrets. Even when his brain is shot and he's with the interview lady he's keeping stuff from her.
Another hint, Roland is worried that Hays will tell the TV people: "what we left out there in the field (the dead security guy)". Roland doesn't know that Hoyt already knew they killed the security guy.

The end provides some decent closure (emotionally) but it's probably not going to change your opinion on the writing. I wouldn't be as severe but it is sort of half assed. By the end they start to resort to one technique* they never used before (plus somewhat inconstantly) and it's hard to shake the feeling it's a cheap / lazy way to cram in some material to beef up the main character (the worst being it largely felt superfluous).

The premise feels artificial and there's quite a few narrative threads introduced and forgotten along the way.

Well my main problem is stupid stuff like

spoiler (click to show/hide)
why do they have to follow their routines every time??? Like after she meets the main loop guy, every day they have a 3 sentence conversation about what's going on and then her ex comes in and then she quits the conversation mid-sentence and runs off and they can't talk again until the next death. Like NO ONE WOULD DO THAT. And a lot of the deaths early on are like their dying because they are idiots beyond what a normal idiot would be. Not too mention a lot of that stuff wouldn't necessarily even kill you...

Most of the script just feels like it goes along for the script's purpose and not because the characters would ever act that way. It's really annoying.

Other dumb stuff is the guy dying and playing the same section of tomb raider over and over. YOU WOULD THINK HE WOULD GET GOOD AT IT. Also again, why would you play the same section over and over. Like play a different game. Do something different. Why follow the same routine it makes no sense.

Just aggravating logic in the show.

Haven't watched this show, but that happens in literally every time loop story i've seen.
Time Crimes, Triangle, BttF (though not really a loop) etc.

The only one that avoids it is Primer, just because i don'ìt know WTF is going on in the first place, so i can't waggle my finger at it.

Finished up True Detective Season 3 tonight. I really liked it. Big rebound for me from Season 2 which I mostly hated.

The Two leads Mahersha Ali and Stephen Dorff just fucking killed it the entire season. One of the few times I've seen where middle aged guys putting on old man makeup wasn't completely cheesey and forced.

I liked the last episode also. Simple and less over wrought than previous seasons.

I thought it was terribly dull. The actors were likeable, but the season’s plot was just a drawn out bunch of nothing. Throughout the show most of the human drama felt weakly written and the only interesting part was the detective/mystery aspect which dragged out and ended on a whimper. I’d give it like 5/10 with S2 being 3/10 and S1 being a 9/10.

Definitely out on the series for good.
