Cool, then I'll pick it up. It's the only game on the list that I don't own and didn't get far when I tried it a decade ago.

fake edit: just remembered they already have dragon Quest x on mobile already. yup this is gonna be awesome

Why the fuck does everything Square Enix have to be slow as hell in battle outside of Bravely Default?  I want all rpgs to move at the speed of SMT4/Enchant Arms.  You can do a retro-style look while still being speedy like BD.  When I see slower paced traditional battle systems (so there's even less of a point of being slow because there's no strategy involved, it's just watch attacks play out) it just instantly turns me off of a jrpg.

The combat for that is slow because it's trying to emulate XI's combat, which is as riveting as watching paint dry.

Zynga was fun about ⅔ of the time until they implemented table-hopping as a mode, which seemed to increase the number of drive-by all-in dickheads. It's hard enough to play poker with people you can't see, but it's another if there's absolutely no chance to even see their betting patterns.

Yes, there are still a few for iOS. I recently listened to a talk by a dev who put up a Jupiter Ace emulator. You won't find any Nintendo emulators on the App Store, but there are a bunch of sites that offer alternative ways of installing an emulator. Some claim that you don't need to jailbreak your device first.

Personally I would rather install an emulator for one of my handheld consoles. Physical buttons are nice.

Are you specifically looking for something you couldn't play on your old phone? Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade is mighty impressive from a technical point of view. It's also fun for a day or two. After that you will get tired of all the prompts for microtransactions.

Otherwise, you have a long list of older games that are fantastic if you haven't played them. My favorites are Threes!, Super Hexagon, Drop7, and You Must Build A Boat. Tower defense games, like Kingdom Rush, are more enjoyable on a larger screen.

Another Warhammer 40k game, Deathwatch, is pretty great. It’s a turn-based strategy shooter that uses the Unreal 4 engine and doesn’t require micro transactions to be successful. In fact, since there is no way to buy experience points, money by itself actually won’t make you successful. It’s really a great game.

I'm never afraid to play footsie with F2P games, so take this post with that in mind, but I've been hooked on Legacy Quest.

It's basically Diablo with voxel-like graphics. There's permadeath, but also a family "legacy" that you can slowly build up. Your legacy buffs/stats helps lessen the pain of the permadeath. You can still cheat permadeath by using RES scrolls, but they are very pricey.

Good amount of polish and thought into the game. Pretty good.

The devs abandoned this game since it sold for shit. So dont expect much if at all support.

Clash of Clans' dudes' new game, Clash Royale, is a neat take on real-time Tower Defense and card collection.

I know I'm going to get bored of it by the mid-tier, but right now I'm having fun. It has an integrated training mode as well as a replay of recent battles, both of which help to gain familiarity without committing resources.

I’ve been enjoying Hitman Sniper as well. I didn’t think I’d like this type of game but apparently I was wrong. It was $1 when I bought it a few days ago and well worth it.

I’ve never really been much of an iOS gamer, but the iPhone 6S Plus 164 GB has really changed that for me. Any other recommendations, especially for strategy games, would be great.

I never tried Clash of Clans even though I wanted to because I couldn't be assed to go through the long tutuorial all those style games have at the beginning. I like that this game is much simpler on that front. It's very easy to pick up without feeling like I'm in tutorial hell.

Agreed. The game does a great job of starting off with the bare basics and then building on that, encouraging a strong core game before allowing actual deck theme and variation. I've finally got a skeleton and goblin themed deck which has worked pretty well.

Glad to hear you're having fun too.

Seems harmless, just brain dead easy, so far and hasn't asked me for money.

Yeah, it's boring because there's no difficulty and the quests are like 30 seconds long.  Hoping it picks up after the baby tutorial stuff is over.  Then again I dunno how these types of games play out.
