Yea, once my graphics card arrives I'll be back.

Raid finder will be scary as fuck, but could possibly work. Often a friend will want to raid, have 3-4 people but no one else wants to go. As long as you have your tank/heals you're pretty much set enough to kill some bosses

Posting totalbiscuit's previews of GW here, and may link his KOTOR one once I watch it. I signed up for the beta just because(kotor).

Wow the combat system looks very fun. Fun looking dungeon too

on a side note I really like TotalBiscuit. He gets some shit in the SC2 community because some people feel he's only casting games for money, but he seems like a nice guy who's passionate about gaming. For anyone who isn't familiar with his life situation, which is pretty sad:

Some more videos. The first two are an exploration of Divinity's Reach, one of the five cities. The second two are discovering the locations of two places that were outposts in the first guild wars game. At the end of this fourth video, the player finds a giant event boss called the Shadow Behemoth.

MMO Champion updated with some Gamescom stuff and apparently they may expand the RealID invites to raids in the future:
http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/2423-Gamescom-Patch-4.3-Interviews-Blue-Posts-Fan-Art-Comics

Quote
Gamescom Interviews
Now that Gamescom is over the last few interviews are popping up with a few interesting details. (via Digitalspy, GameInformer, Allvatar, and JudgeHype)

Patch 4.3+
The new 5 man dungeons will help to introduce the Deathwing Raid.
The current plan with the Deathwing raid is to have it all available immediately upon release.
The Deathwing raid will be smaller than Ulduar with many phases or encounters with Deathwing.
Patch 4.4 will bring a world event before the next expansion.
The next expansion should be released with a "meaningful difference" in the release timeline compared to previous expansions.

Future Changes and Features
Paid Guild Transfers are still in the works.
Battle.net account wide achievements are still in the works.
Armor dyes are unlikely to be included in the game, but mount customization is a possibility.
Class Quests are unlikely to return due to the amount of time it takes to design and implement them.
No gold sinks are coming soon because of the large variance in the amount of gold players have.
A real money Auction House is not planned for WoW.

Other Notes
RealID LFD grouping was originally going to be paid because of the similarity to Paid Character Transfers, but they decided it was the right thing for the game to offer it for free.
Cross realm RealID grouping is going to be expanded to cover Battlegrounds as well. Depending on how well that works it could be expanded to raids and rated battlegrounds.
There has been a drop in gold farming because phishing and hacking accounts is more profitable.
New players are still having trouble with the first 30 minutes and five levels of the game, more hand holding is coming for very basic concepts like moving, questing, fighting, and looting.
Blizzard did a lot to save time while getting Cataclysm finished, but ended up happy with the final result.
The shared 10 and 25 man lockout has had both positive and negative effects, it solved the need to do both every week but removed some extra content that could be done every week. Some changes will be made in the future to make everyone happier with the solution.

Ah I thought ReadID would be available with the patch. Still, I like the idea. I remember there being lots of interest in ICC well after the new raids came out, allowing people to catch up. But thus far on my server I'm not seeing any groups for the pre-Firelands raids, which sucks. The Zul 5 mans are boring imo, it's pretty hard to convince myself to gear from there.

Some GW2 stuff from Eurogames Con or whatever that I had no idea was going on.

First some news, then more Cynical Brit.

"Lead content designer on Guild Wars 2, Colin Johanson has told Eurogamer that Guild Wars 2 is on track to go into beta by the end of this year. It’s currently in closed friends and family alpha testing. The success of the closed beta phase will decide the date of the open beta, and the eventual release date next year."
http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/09/27/guild-wars-2-beta-to-arrive-this-year-for-sure-new-footage-shows-public-quests-and-pvp/

from online Q&A

Quote
Is there an in-game mail system? @SnakesSnakes

Yes, there is a little flashing symbol in the top left corner – looky here: One interesting piece of information which we gleaned from Martin was that when a new mail is received it is brought to you by carrier pigeon! Which I thought was pretty goddamn awesome.

How has player to player trade been improved? @SnakesSnakes

Colin told us about the marketplace. In the marketplace the player has the ability to not only buy and sell items like a traditional auction house, but also place “Wanted” ads in there stating which item they’d like and for what price. In this system a seller can activate the ad and the transaction will automatically occur with both items being removed from the two players inventories.

Similarly, personal player to player trade can be done through the in-game mail system (see above question for details). Unfortunately, there is no face-to-face trade (ala GW1) in the game at launch.

I particularly like the item wanted option for their marketplace. I have feeling this option will make the former AH way of putting up a bunch of things an old hat practice.

Now the Cynical Brit:

The thief moves look particularly impressive.

it actually has come a long way. not to say it's good or anything, but it's getting there. it has taken over a year to put in airships and chocobos! next week baby!

the next three patches are very ambitious, and pretty much reverse course as to whatever the hell the original plan was. kinda looking forward to it.

oddly, both City of Heroes and DC Universe Online are becoming Free to Play games (the latter on the PS3 as a free PSN download too).  DC Universe Online was moderately entertaining in the beta.  Whenever the change happens, I might play it again.

also, Guild Wars 2 looks really good.

I was given a copy of Rift so I've been playing it since then. I was in the beta and I think I talked about it here during that time. Now that I'm playing the retail version, it really does feel like the people behind Rift are big WoW BC era fans. I like that my rogue can tank, be ranged dps or melee, and has a support role similar to the old shadowpriest of WoW. Still, the game is sticking with old designs of grinding for gear to reach next level of pve endgame grinding for more gear. The PVP system is also gear grind based. Players in PVP who have grinded for longer have gear that make it impossible for freshly new players to do anything against them.

For example, I approach a player. He has roughly 8k HPs to my 4k+ HPs. Both of us are at max level. I stealth in behind the player, set a debuff on them that makes them take a small bit of extra damage from me, stun hit them from stealth, set up two combo points. I do a hard hitting cast bow attack, then an attack that does damage on movement and then my best finisher. I hit a leapback move to get range. I hit my quick shot to start building combo points and keep moving. I hit my armor reducing attack. The opposing player, after all this, has lost maybe 20% health. They use a gap closer, hit me twice and I'm at about 10% health suddenly.

The PVP is about 85% gear based. Well, the entire game is and that's disappointing considering the adaptability the soul/skill system gives. The game is also full of 15 year old WoWtards. Some of you know the type I mean. The sort that litter general chat and whose brains are about 75% meme and 25% racist.

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-11-06-115-jobs-lost-as-lego-universe-closes
Quote
LEGO is to close down its recently launched MMO this January following failure to generate enough subscribers.

The company's Play Well Studios in Louisville and marketing team in Denmark will be axed, affecting 115 employees.

LEGO Universe launched in 2010 after a protracted development, but in February this year the company bought the majority of the development team and the rights to the game from developer NetDevil. It then proceeded to lay off members of staff.

In June this year LEGO launched a free-to-play section of the game to help drive pick-up in the title.

"The LEGO Universe team can take pride in having developed and launched a great LEGO experience that many players will miss," said Jesper Vilstrup, VP of LEGO Universe.

"Right now, we have almost 2 million players in LEGO Universe, and we get extremely positive feedback from players. Unfortunately, we have not been able to build a satisfactory revenue model in our target group, and therefore, have decided to close the game."

Despite the closure, LEGO emphasised that it intends to continue its digital games publishing business and intends to pursue deals such as those currently in place with TT Games and Warner Bros.

"The development of our digital offerings continues to be a very important element in our strategy," said Mads Nipper, executive VP of the LEGO Group.

"We have more than 20 million visitors on LEGO.com every month, and LEGO video games are among the bestselling children's video games with sales of more than 60 million units in the last five years. Through our experience developing and running LEGO Universe, we have gained a lot of valuable insights, and we have a very strong foundation for future development in the digital area."

I only recently noticed that this had launched, much less had a free-to-play portion. It's sad, when I heard about it, I was looking forward to it, but it just was off my radar -- apparently off everyone's radar.

I played The Old Republic beta finally, leveled a Jedi Consular to level 12.

Things I liked:
-Taking on more than one enemy at once
-Giant cities with the KOTOR layout of being not just a safety crib full of NPCs. A lot of MMOs have their city and its a safehouse and everything else combat and quest wise is done outside the city. The city here is sprawling and full of quests that are accomplished within the various areas of the city.
-Companion utility: Makes soloing easier and works like a hero from Guild Wars, but ToR's companions are also your fetchmen and errand runners. If you are going to do some solo stuff where they are unneccessary, you can send them out to do some Crew Skill quests, which are crafting and gathering missions that basically take up a set amount of time. Your companion goes off for five minutes and then when he returns you get your reward described in the Crew skill tab.

Meh things:
-Combat. Consular's knockbacks and stuns made Jedi-ing it up in a mess of people a bit more heroic, and I liked just flinging rocks at people and force-knocking them back. It is still very hotbar based though and I didn't find much depth to be had.
-Visual Style: Not sure how I feel about it. A cross between KOTOR and the CG Clone Wars show. Things looked flat and the world felt sterile. Even going up some stairs it looked like your character was going up a ramp. You're a Jedi and you can't jump up a little rock hill one rock at a time.

Dislikes:
-Too much dialogue. I don't need three dialogue options to accept a minor quest. Then you hand it in and there's three to five more options. The dialogue options don't match the exact wording of what your character ends up saying and you can't rely on the choice you make creating the sentiment you seek. There's a healthy amount of dialogue and then there's an obnoxious amount that begins to annoy you and add extra time to a game that already is designed to eat up time. ToR is firmly on the obnoxious side.
-It is just a wow/diku derivative with Star Wars paint. Whatever new things are brought to the genre in this game, they exist with the companion or city structure.
-Quest design is so unimaginative. Everything is a fetch quest or some variety of it (find these things and click on them) with kill ten rats as bonus missions.
-Story driven game that constantly breaks any immersion by everyone running around with the same companion. One day someone will get clever and create their MMO story structure based upon the reality of a MMO game: everyone doing everything together and slowly realizing you're all doing the same thing

From what I can tell, its tank and spank. My class had a healing heroic class with a healing skill tree. My shadow heroic class choice had what appeared to be a tanking tree, though I'm not sure how they work tanking in while wearing light armor gear. My companion crew member had a tanking buff for himself and a taunt as well.

No stupid quests and shit, just a sandbox, with a system to let players give out quests and bounties and shit.

I believe it starts Friday, but they're giving people access in rounds. A certain amount will get in at this time on this day, then some more maybe 6-12 hours later, and so on. It ends probably 12am Monday.

And I got a 12 gig update patch just a couple weeks since the previous beta.  This is some seriously shitty patching strategy.

wait so you pre-ordered? I thought you didn't like TOR.

I've been in the beta since last December.

Up until July of this year, it was sub-2004 WoW. Now it's about BC-era WoW. It still has a way to go to match current WoW or launch Rift just in terms of features. People on GAF are going nuts over it because they haven't touched a MMO since FFXI.

It took them forever just to do linked flightpaths. Other features other MMOs have and people expect, like dual specs, are promised for some nebulous post-launch time.

And the open world instancing is so backwardly distinguished mentally-challenged the game deserves to fail if they don't stop it.

They instance all of the zones like Cryptic does. So for the Jedi areas there's Tython 1, Tython 2, Tython 3, Coruscant 1, Coruscant 2, etc. And to switch instances to group with people, it uses up your 30-minute cooldown hearthstone. So if you group with someone who happens to be in a different instance, and your hearthstone is on cooldown, it's too bad. You have to wait the 30 minutes to start your group.

They claim this is done to prevent server queues, but in the last weekend test they had extremely high server queues while each zone was instanced three or four times.
