Quick thoughts on my MoP beta experience so far

-The opening panda area almost looks like an entirely different game. Artistically it's rather beautiful, the music is great, and the panda character models just look amazing.

-I'm only lv6 but thus far I like the zone, although it does feel easier than previous ones. Very beginner friendly

-I plan on choosing Brewmaster once I hit lv10; I'm assuming everyone else will be selected the dps spec for the most part. With other tank classes you can tell early on which spells or instants will be used for tanking, but so far I can't really tell. Pretty much everything is dps focused, outside of a stun

-I LOVE the dodge ability, and would love for all classes to get something like it (as in GW2). I'd imagine healers won't be too thrilled about pandas rolling out of range but it looks awesome, and will probably be great for avoiding damage.

-Anecdotal, but it seems like way more people are involved in this beta than were in Cata's. I remember there being a lot of Worgen running around when I was in that beta, but there are pandas everywhere in this. Like, the zone is full as fuck

-Panda mages do a hodoken :o

Leveled a Monk to 12. Then tried out the new areas on a 85 Mage. Really happy with Frost DPS so far.

Overall the Panda area is fun. I only experienced one bug, where I was stuck for a few hours lol (I jumped on the turtle carrying the island, not a good idea).

Can't really say I like the Monk class overall, at least so far. Perhaps it has more to do with the new talent/spec set up, which feels so barebones. I'm a Brewmaster, just got to lv15 so I can do dungeons, but I basically have no tank spells. Yes, I have a taunt (which is pretty nice actually; whatever you taunt gets a 50% movement buff) and a stun but that's it. No AOE, nothing I can see that is your bread and butter attack.

I think I'll try to tank Deadmines just to see what happens lmao. IIRC by level 15 with a warrior you already have Thunder Clap, Sunder, and Heroic Strike.

Also the chi set up is weird. The attack that creates 1 chi costs 40 energy...bleh. You can obviously set up a nice rotation to ensure you're making chi nearly as fast as you're spending it, but it's still a weird set up. Maybe I'm just an old dinosaur only truly familiar with prot warriors, paladins, and shamans lol

No I felt the same about the Monk in regards to the number of abilities. They need more because as a tank you only have how many at level 10? Four? The two punches and a kick plus that targetable AOE?

But since the Monk has always been my favorite class since D&D I'll be leveling one to 85.

Apparently Blizzard is going to re-do Monk abilities, adding a few. Definitely a welcome change. I'm gonna do Deadmines tonight for lols.

The monk healing setup seems weird. It would be cool if it healed through damage, like how other games have gone with more active healing setups, but I can't really make sense of it yet.

it seems like the first closed beta for GW2 prepurchase is happening the weekend I'll be out of town. smh

I was in the TERA beta again this weekend and played an Archer to level 16. The Archer felt more actiony as it had a bit more movement, but I got bored of doing the quests. It's all just kill ten rats over and over. The only way to make it interesting is to pull multiple mobs to do it faster, but there's too many other players fighting for the same mobs.

Tanked Wailing Caverns a couple days ago with my Monk. Damn the place is shorter than it used to be, but still pretty long. Didn't have too many aggro issues. Around lv20 you get this fire cone aoe attack which is pretty nice. The group was very melee heavy, I wonder how aggro would hold up with a mage aoe'ing everything.

Overall the Monk's abilities feel very clunky while tanking; at multiple times I started thinking about just making another Warrior lol. Chi and energy are really hand tied to a point where you're constantly low on both, and just auto attacking with nothing else to do. I know you get more chi in later levels but something needs to be done earlier

As I've said before, you have a melee attack that costs 40 energy and 1 chi...and another ability you're supposed to stack to maximize the fire cone damage which also costs 40 energy and 1 chi. I see no reason why the energy shouldn't be 20-30 at the most.

Only played Windwalker Monk, but it's essentially a Rogue with less strategy (fixed CP finishers rather than scaled CP finishers). I'm not really seeing the need for it, other than the other two specs throwing more healers and tanks into the mix.

Jab/Clobber/Whatever feel like they award too much Chi as well. Clunky.

Well Blizzard just emailed me to let me know there's a time limit on the scroll of resurrection I was sent, so it looks like I'll be logging into WoW just to use up the free bonuses. It's been over a year since I last played, so the patch is like 5 gigs.

Registered my pre-purchase code for GW2 and linked it to my GW1 account. Time to debate on grinding out some more HoM points or not.

Used my res scroll for WoW, but haven't boosted or xfered a char yet. The person that sent it to me sent it from a character on a server she doesn't play as much and all the xfer boosts are tied to that server. So that's kind of lame. I'm not sure if I can boost to 80 on another server or not, but I'd rather do that then xfer and boost to a server where I have no investment.

Nobody else I used to play with is around now except for one guy who also got sent a res scroll. The server I had xfered Kate to that was raiding and lively back then is pretty dead now. It always reads Low population on login screen and even the small RPPVP Ravenholdt server hovers around medium.

Played the free SW TOR weekend and finished up with it before the weekend even really began. I could try another class, but maybe only to see the Empire side. Trial level cap is 15. I am not sure what to say that I haven't before. I tried their warzones and they were alright. While their PVP gathers from all level brackets and boosts lower levels up, there still wasn't enough people to have more than one warzone running at once. Trial accts didn't have access to certain warzones as well. I got to play huttball, the capture point one and the attack/defend one.

The game looks pretty good on my system. I named my smuggler Captain Hucksfard.

For next week:

Quote
We’re counting the days until the first public Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event, which begins on Friday, April 27, at noon PDT (GMT-7) and ends on Sunday, April 29, at 11:59 p.m. PDT (GMT-7). Hundreds of thousands of players from around the world will get their first taste of Guild Wars 2—and rest assured, we’ll be playing alongside them!
There are a couple important things you need to know about this Beta Weekend Event:
The only way to absolutely guarantee your access to this or any future Beta Weekend Events is to pre-purchase any edition of Guild Wars 2.
Customers who have pre-purchased the game will receive an e-mail next week with instructions on how to download the client and participate in the Beta.
This is a public event, which means that you’re not bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). So go ahead, feel free to take screenshots, shoot video, blog, tweet, write, or compose a rock opera to share your Guild Wars 2 experience with the world.
http://www.arena.net/blog/the-beta-weekend-event-is-coming

So I'll be in that. No NDA, but I'll be out of town for most of the weekend. I'll grab some screenshots. Still no Asura or Sylvari. They're holding them back for now. Game Informer was given access to the Sylvari for an exclusive, so they're in the game but not in the open beta yet.

I post way too much in this thread.

Some beta impressions and Rift comments:

SWTOR: Played two characters on the free weekend. The Jedi Consular story is still weaker than others. My smuggler's story was much more interesting and I felt less forced into picking one side of a binary light/dark morality. The warzones were okay. There was only one WZ running on my server at a time and the trial version locked you out of some warzones while still queuing you for them. (Wha?) The game really needs a group finder. Considering how instanced it is, arguing against a dungeon finder to preserve open world feel is kind of silly. It feels almost entirely like a single player game. I only grouped up once and the guy I grouped with told me my name was gay (Jedi named Zebeskov). His name was CplBeefcurtains. So taking the advice of the player base, I named my smuggler Captain Hucksfard.

TERA: Third Beta. Only difference this time is the added prologue segment which was kind of a mess. I was really curious to check this out so I could see what a full skill list of abilities could do, but the prologue shoves everyone in a tight spot where there's nothing to fight until you jump into an instance (almost unwittingly) and end up all alone with some NPCs. Most of interacting with others in the prologue was everyone jumping around hitting buttons and seeing what they did. Still, I had skills not bound to anything that the game wouldn't let me bind in the prologue so I wasn't able to test out some of the cooler sounding skills.

I think TERA will attract some people from Aion and some bad WoW players. "But the action combat will attract good players!" Eh. The problem is that doing any actual action makes your character non-mobile. It almost feels turn-based in that you spam your attack and then when the monster gives its attack tell, you stop doing everything and move three steps around the monster. Then you return to attacking until the monster attacks again. The questing is all korean grindy quests even if leveling wasn't hard. Then how does it feel grindy? Just by the way they quests are done. The quests were all killtenrats and they haven't changed that so far in beta, so you really are doing nothing but that repetitive combat for the 20+ levels I played.

Rift: Another big patch released. They added fishing and adventuring as profession skills, along with a new 20 man raid. The last patch I played had a whole new island/continent that was high level stuff. I plan to check the new prof skills out to see if they're any fun or if they're sort of grindy like in WoW. I do like that Trion continually adds things to Rift. One giant event normally follows the last giant event. You can get mounts and cosmetic items through the events. I just wished they would have ditched the gear treadmill. If I log back in on my main, i'll be way behind the crowd due to months of not gear grinding. All I've played the past few months is my under 20 characters since those are free to play. If I were to resub to a game to kill time until GW2, it would be Rift over WoW at this point. The leveling areas in Rift are all still active thanks to Rift events while leveling in WoW last week often meant I was the only player in an entire zone. I had Hyjal to myself at one point, which was really weird.

The political system sounds cool. Curious to see how many presidentes a server can have.

I played in three Tera weekend betas and decided not to get it. There isn't much the game had going on besides the combat and the combat wasn't as actiony as I was expecting. Game reminded me a bit of Aoin, but that is probably due to the quests and art design.

In the World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria beta, we’re introducing a new technology that will enable players to meet up and group with other players in under populated areas of the world such as low level zones or areas that other players may have outleveled or moved on from. This technology will allow players to form a group with other players from within a select pool of realms in order to quest just like they normally would while still allowing the social structures of their home realms to remain intact.

Quote
Q. How do cross-realm zones work?
When you’re in a zone that is set as a ‘cross-realm zone’ you’ll notice that in addition to the players you’d ordinarily see from your realm, you’ll also see (and be able to play with) players from other realms.  This will happen seamlessly, and players will be able to group and quest as they normally would with players from their own realm.

Interesting. I wonder how quickly this gets griefed?

It's a great idea. So far in the beta I've run across people in all the older low zones (Redridge Mountains, Westfall, etc) but I'd imagine that won't be the case once the game goes live on small to medium size servers. Sure there will be an onslaught of pandas running around for the first couple months, but eventually those zones will dry up.

I didn't create a Worgen character (for Cata) in part because I knew there wouldn't be many people to play with, but I'm definitely going to create a new character for MoP

Even more reason to be a complete asshat to everyone around you.

Ah, who am I kidding? The game has no community anymore and people aren't held responsible for shit anyway. At least this way the lower level zones will feel more alive, even if you aren't likely to ever see the same players more than once.

Also, it will be extremely irritating to camp rares now.

The weird thing is that group quests are pretty much gone now aren't they? They should readjust their tagging rules.

What this does is prevent them from having to merge servers. Accomplishes the same goal while not being bad PR.

Most servers are now just places where a bunch of lv85 characters park in Stormwind or Org. I stopped feeling guilty about missing guild raids when I could just que up for DS, find 24 very good people from more...professional servers than mine, and one shot bosses with next to no drama or guilt. Last time I looked at our calender, the guild is raiding twice a week, but many people aren't showing up. I think DS is cool, but there's no way I'm going to show up and raid that thing for the next 3-4 months as Blizzard readies MoP. I spent a lot of time doing Ulduar while waiting for ICC to come out, but that was fun and fresh. Blizz knocked it out the park with challenging hard modes and later with weekly raid quests.

My idea/suggestion: In order to get players to move around a bit, capitol cities should change each week or so, at least for players at lv85. So one week SW would have the various portals to different Cata zones,  the next week Ironforge would have them, then Shatt etc.

I'd also love for each capitol city to have a specific mini raid along the veins of Baradin Hold/VoA/EoE. Each could have a revolving 1-2 boss set up. Maybe one week SW could have a 25 man where you get to challenge King Varian, the next week some type of dwarf council in IF, etc. And each would be server specific - no queing with people from different servers. It would be even more awesome if each one was open to both factions, so Horde could fly into SW and enter the raid

Maple Story is cool.

It's not downright-horrible anymore. The grind from 1-50 was completely wiped out with Big Bang in December 2010 and they've been making their way rebalancing every single class since then. Tons of content (it's seven years old in America, nine in Korea), like 15 classes (it launched with 4), great unique 2D graphics, they just added crafting and PvP systems, etc.

You could do much worse for a free MMO, in fact although I haven't played all other free MMOs out there I would say MS is probably near or at the top of the heap.

If you're into that sort of thing. And hey, Nexon must be doing something right if it's earned them $1.8 billion so far.

It's tough, because you wonder about ti going free to play. I'll say this: I got LOTRO collecter's edition Mines of Moria or whatever for like $8. The game eventually went F2P, but having that version didn't lock me out of so much content as a F2P user would have been locked out of. I believe I had a higher level cap and more access to areas and features. So there can be advantages if you get something cheap before it goes F2P.

Don't wait on Rift going F2P. They have a healthy sub base and continually show it by releasing constant content patches.

And I agree on the art. The original game has some meh, sort of scattered art design. This expansion looks far more detailed and focused in its art design.

I've been playing The Secret World beta over the weekend. The atmosphere and world works really well. It has some decent VA and the questing never really bored me. There is also a lack of levels, and I think I'm getting to a point where I'm doing stuff beyond my "hidden" level, as monsters are much harder to take down, and I'm dying more often, but I like that I could progress as far as my skill took me.

Combat and the rest still needs work. While the VA lines are nice, the lips of characters aren't synced to the words. The class system is very open and based on a deck system, so its sort of like Guild Wars in that manner. I accidently made my dude into a tanky character through chaos magic and blades. The skill building system is a little confusing at first, but I made sense of it eventually. You get Skil Points and these are the closest measurement you have to level, as they get earned every X experience points. For quests and XP, you will earn Ability Points (at about four times the rate you get skill points) and these are used to buy abilities in the various ability lines. All the abilities are based on weapon and magic use. If you equip a chaos focus and a sword, then you'll want chaos magic abilities and blade attacks. Half of the abilities you unlock are actual actions you assign to your hotbar, the others are passives you can assign to your passive bar. As of now, you can only have 7 actions and 7 passives, but can swap abilities in and out. Skill points are roughly related to these ability lines and few other attribute lines.

Combat generally feels like a regular MMO. The animations are a bit stiff so there's a lack in sense of weight and crunch, but they added a dodge move that's on a timer CD. Enemies will also show a circle or array of their incoming big AOE attack.

I forget if they're doing a sub model for this or not, but it doesn't feel like a subscription based game. The game is broken up into zones and you don't interact with other players much. Once in awhile you'll fight the same thing together, and in certain cases credit is shared, but in other cases the credit for the kil is not shared. You will also hop into solo instances here and there, especially for the main story quest. The menu lists in an ingame shop menu, but it's not up yet. The most interesting thing about the game is that it has an in-game web browser and many puzzles will give you clues that you can look up on the in-game browser, such as which classical composer would be related to "seasons".

Lastly, the crafting is sort of like minecraft. It needs a tutorial though.

If they clean up the issues and release it as a non-sub model game, it could be worth picking up as a sort of semi-MMO RPG.

October 7: Mogu'shan Vaults (LFR) opens, those who cleared normal Vaults can access heroic mode
October 30: Heart of Fear and Terrace of Endless Spring (normal) open, with Terrace only accessible by clearing Heart
November 6: Heart of Fear and Terrace of Endless Spring (LFR) open; queuing for Terrace requires clearing Heart. Those who cleared normal Heart can access heroic Heart, same for Terrace.

Challenge modes look amazing. You can't cue for them right now, meaning you have to fly to the summon stones like in the old days. I love this idea, although I'd imagine it will be changed. Hopefully there's some type of compromise - perhaps offer more rewards for non-que server runs.

Raid schedule is something new, I'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Someone on GAF mentioned that Blizzard has said there are no plans to make challenge modes accessible via random cues. If they stick to that, this might be the most interesting thing in WoW since Ulduar hard modes. And because random groups won't be failing at the challenges, it's less likely to be nerfed due to crying/complaining.

I like the intuitive nature of queing and being able to find a group within seconds (tank ftw), but I also sometimes miss the days of finding groups in trade chat, or getting excited when that super good healer you knew signed on so you could do instances; likewise it was always cool when I'd sign on and immediately get a couple whispers asking if I wanted to do something. With this you'll be able to get groups quickly for regular runs, but also have the benefit of looking in trade chat for challenge mode groups.

Think of all the achievements they could add lol. Like an achievement for completing a challenge mode in 20 minutes with an all Paladin group, or all druid, or four warriors and one healer, etc.

My favourite thing about WoW was doing a dungeon with one class. The UBRS ones were awesome.

Interesting that the item cap also raises item level right now. Hard to say if that's just not smoothed out yet or if it's intended.

Must feel good to lose a million subs and still have 8 million more subs then the runner up MMO.

Im always torn about this too. Im just happy I was there in the beginning and experienced a true MMO community, people knowing each other on the server, open world pvp.

Yeah that first year after launch was the best year of WoW no matter which improvements they made in the meantime. It was an experience. Now its just a game.

I doubt Blizzard is celebrating that too much.

Blizzard sold 10 million copies of D3 for its best quarter ever, and a WoW-boosting expansion is 8 weeks away.

They'll cope.

Pretty sure no one is arguing Blizzard is doomed

WoW is certainly on the decline though, and another 5 level expansion/rehash won't fix that. Cata was rather forgettable to most players and I don't see that changing with MoP six months down the line

People bitch now that queues have ruined the community, but they will bitch even more after having to go back to yelling in major cities for groups again. Those days are gone.

I'm the first to have nostalgia for ye olde WoW, but after playing on several private Classic / BC servers over the past couple of years even I get extremely frustrated trying to field the people for these dungeons. Combine that with the low attention span and quick to anger nature of the average WoW player these days and you'll be in for a drama laden shit-fest. The cons of the queue system are also the pros: you don't have to deal with people. At all.

May as well call this new difficulty level "Guild Dungeons", because that's all it will be good for.

MoP is nothing like Cata.

I hope that's in regard to the quality/quantity of the 5-Man and Raid Content, and not to to the leveling. If it is, color me surprised. WoW hasn't had Blizzard's A Team (or B or C or) attention in years.
