I think the reason why my overall % is low is because I don't complete 100% each area.  I go in, blow up all the goverment property, grab any visible pickups and leave and go to the next.  I find searching for that one last pickup that is keeping you from 100% to be really frustrating and just makes me not have fun as I search every corner.  I wish there was a better way to find that last item your missing in each place :(  I have a ton of areas at 90%+ :\

I think my end stats were like 250 settlements found, 27 settlements completed.

I'm at 61 locations found (last one I found by accidentally flying a 747 too low into a dock :lol)

I think of the ones I've tried, I've 100% them all, probably 40ish so far. I'd like to get the 100% 100 locations achievement.

What I usually do is grapple around the rooftops until I don't have that wifi signal anymore, then look for shit to blow up. It's usually not too hard to 100% places unless they're too big, and it's usually something stupid like a generator or transistor that I couldn't find. Or it's one of those places with a hidden radar thing you need to start.

What's in your rig?

Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 8800 GT. It runs at 30 most of the time [which seems to be the max in-game] with sporadic drops into the 20s in some of the more detailed areas [the city] or when there's a bunch of explosions going off. All things considered, it's pretty smooth.

Wow, that's cool. I like the guy getting thrown free of his car. Not so much that the just stands there, though. I guess it's more fun than just setting all the default reaction behaviors to "PANIC!"

Strong rope on but that only changes the grapple once it has been attached.  If you notice the way I have to stand in that video, it is because the grapple would detach if I moved around initially.  You have to aim up, then straight down. You couldn't turn around or w/e because the rope would detach.  That is why the race track is so much fun; the cars are constantly going in a loop at the max vehicle speed.

both multiple grapple and endless grapple have issues so I don't use them yet

the site mentions a multiplayer mod getting worked on, and I don't think it is impossible considering what happened with the GTA PC games and MTA.

I haven't tried any of these mods yet.  I'm still not done with the missions and the Bolo patch is all I'm using for now.  Apparently the next version of the bolo patch will let you lock the time of day and change lighting.

PC DLC is up.

Also that radar thing you mentioned pilonv1 is really useful!  I played a little and completed a few settlements using it to find the hidden items.  Would have definitely changed the way I played the game if I'd known about it  :lol

Also I dunno if it's just me, but the enemies seemed less intense when I was playing tonight at max heat.  I wonder if they toned down the aggression?

:lol I can't believe you were doing settlements without it.

I don't even bother shooting enemies now unless it's a Colonel. Otherwise I just grapple around and blow up the gas tanks etc. It's like Red Faction Guerilla, it's more fun the lest time you waste on shooting enemies

I think I'm more of a fan of the Just Cause engine than I am of the actual gameplay.  IMO Avalanche is still about one game away from turning this franchise into something great.  I'm having more fun just dicking around than doing any of the real missions because too often I'm finding them to be a pain in the ass.  There's something just not right about the constant enemy respawning with the HEAT system and the relative shortage of ammo.  I don't know how many times I've run out of ammo during missions.....really fucking sucks.   Sure, you can always pick up weapon drops but even that can be cumbersome when you're getting shot at from a guy with a shotgun a half mile away - and he's hitting you.  WTF is the deal with shotgun range anyway?  And why is everyone on Panau a sharpshooter?  It's just too frustrating sometimes.  This game is in desperate need of a cover system.

And JC2 is the DK64 of openworld collectathons.  Jesus Christ, this is videogame OCD on a disc. "You've collected 64 of 2046 weapon parts" or some nonsense like that, and that's just one of the items.  Weapon parts, Vehicle parts, Armor upgrades, black boxes, drug packages, skulls, etc.  Holy fucking crap.  Anyone that bothers to get 100% in this one will probably have to be committed by the time it's all over with.

That being said, I still think Avalanche has one of the best environmental engines around.  I noticed they pulled back with the clouds and rolling weather systems in this game compared to the first, but I guess I'll take that compromise if it helped with giving us all the visual variety.  Too bad they can't make the character models just as impressive as the island itself.

Still a great game to fuck around with while listening to a podcast, your music, audiobook, or whatever though.

I would probably be raging hard if I didn't have infinite health.  Sometimes 80% of the screen is just bullet trails.  It's actually best to go and collect things before you finish the game because they make things a lot harder the more you progress in the campaign.

btw, that radar thing is so helpful.  I'm not surprised I didn't notice a tiny icon in the top left of the screen, but now that I do, it makes finding that last box way easier.

I'm trying to do this  8)

I think it's actually impossible since some items aren't marked on your map.  I'll probably be able to get 90 some percent, and the game's highest reward seems to be 70% (for the achievement).  Right now I'm at around 49% and I play while listening to a podcast or something for an hour every other day.  I'll finish it up in a few months or years.

Well yeah, if you're just doing random bullshit the damage that you caused previously will still be there but that's not the case when you're on a mission.  It can be incredibly unforgiving.

And the Black Market would a hell of a lot more useful if you didn't have to repurchase your guns/vehicles ala GTA all the time.  After you buy the things it should be unlocked for infinite air drops but instead the game forces you to buy everyday shit at crazy prices.  I don't mind unlocking items through the chaos system but unlocking them and then buying them over and over again is a bit much imo, especially when ammo can be a huge issue in this game.

I've upgraded the smg a little, but for the entire first third of the game I've used the assault rifle almost exclusively. Upgrade that as you move along and the one-handed weapons don't matter too much. until you unlock the grenade launcher, which is awesome. I currently have that at level 4. 8 rounds in the mag and 40 to spare :arr

You should probably upgrade the submachine guns, since you can carry two at once.

I went:

Frag Grenades (one level 3 frag will take out a SAM/Water Tower, so you can grapple around, use 3-4 frags to take out the SAMs and then use a chopper to destroy everything)
Assault Rifle (6 stars, basically only use this since it's powerful as hell and not as common as the SMG and pistols)
Sub Machine Gune (6 stars)

Saving the rest now for grenade launcher and sniper rifle. Upgrading also increases your clip size.

Anything after that doesn't matter.

For vehicles I went 6 stars on the bond plane, then the boat, since cars are easily obtainable.

Re: black market, there's a mod for PC that gives you stuff for free, and unlocks a bunch of extra weapons/vehicles too. There's also a mod which lets you fly the bond plane underwater which I'm getting tonight :hyper

Someone on another board I read was complaining about the missions saying they're no fun and punish you for trying to experiment. Which is true, the missions in this game are the dirt worst. But if you're playing this for the missions you're doing it wrong.

first thing I upgraded was the SMG because it is the most useful weapon in the game and is only stopped by the strongest enemy types (the ones with name tags) and some objects.  The fact that you can use it when hanging on a service makes it more useful than any other weapon.  After that I did the rocket launcher, then the grenade launcher.  I haven't checked out many I have now so I might do the triggered explosives or regular grenades now.

and yeah, the missions suck.  I'm finishing up the blue ones and 4/5 of them are total trash with the 5th having some entertaining segment.  The worst is the same base capture mission 9 times.

eh, I liked 80% of the missions in the game.  They added cool scripted elements that you can't get from just running around causing chaos.  The problem with total freeform action in JC2 is there is only so much you or the AI can do.  It gets repetitive after a while when you've seen it all before.  The scripted bits in the missions add new stuff and make the game more fun.  Like when you have to snipe a guy's executor before he kills him and then escort him to safety out of the premise.  Or when you have to get in a jet and shoot down a rocket satellite flying away into the atmosphere.  Or fight ninjas.

Honestly, if the game didn't have missions I would have gotten bored if it after 10 hours of screwing around and destroying things.  The missions are what made the game fun for me and once I finished all the missions I was basically done with the game.  I can turn it on at this point and mess around, but I get bored really quick and the only thing that motivates me are working toward the achievements.

Fuck all ninjas.

That is all.

I got through the game easy without the the bolo patch.  The game gets ridiculously stupid with each new campaign mission finished, obviously topping out when you complete them all.  That's when it started to get annoying and I turned on infinite ammo and health.

It actually goes by some other counter, not main missions completed.  I unlocked the max heat level waaaaay before the final story missions.

the first DLC pack came out yesterday.  It's $2 and includes parachute thrusters, a 4x lock on rocket launcher, and some jet.

The jet is boring.  The rocket launcher lets you lock onto four objects and fire four tracking rockets.  Taking out a base is really easy now since you can just fire straight downward and clear the place out.

the parachute thrusters are awesome.  not quite a jetpack, but it still lets you fly around using the parachute.  It works on a heat gauge, so for every few seconds of boost, you have to wait for it too cool down.  It basically helps you travel when grappling to something isn't an option, or just straight up, or just to move faster.  You can fly across the large water areas now.

and a PC mod that makes the parachute thruster faster and with no heat gauge

and the official trailer for this and the next mod pack.

I'm probably going to buy the second one for that air physics gun

ok, have to post since I just encountered a nice gamebreaking bug in this. I'm doing all the faction missions for the achievement, and got to a Reapers mission called Black Gold. the mission is to fly out to an oil rig and "destroy it", which means blowing up regular sabotage objects (rig tower, crane, fuel depots) on the rig to fill up a bar. the problem is of course, if you've taken advantage of the openness of the game and visited this rig earlier in the game and blown stuff up, chances are that you can't complete this mission. also, if you haven't, if you start this mission and die in the middle of blowing stuff up, you restart from the mission starting point and the destruction percentage reverts back to zero, but all the objects are still blown up. so, you have to do it right the first time, and if you've 100%:ed the rig before, you're also screwed. I died mid-mission and realized I couldn't finish it, so I had to reload a save from last night, losing me only a couple of hours of progress. also I was lucky enough to not have blown stuff up on this rig before. had done so on the other rig just south of the one in the mission though. hua

here is a map of what I'm talking about

I destroyed that rig before doing the mission, but had no problems in completing it.

I don't know, I just did it.

seems like a gaffer did this as well, so it would seem that the sabotage objects are actually supposed to respawn when starting this mission, the guy on gaf got 41/40 cranes after doing it. hehe. guess I just got some weird glitch then
