Actually it's about a guy who uses a bow and arrow.

I accidentally bought Alan Moore and his wife's porn journey. It's a chunky ass HB, and after a cursory flip through, it seems really into doggy style. It's basically a reactionary coffee-table book.

How can you accidentally buy a boxed set of oversized hardcover books that weigh 5 kilograms? Was it in the checkout line's "impulse buy" area, next to the tabloids?

Yes it was. But I also actually wanted to buy it, and I hope I never have to read it. It's actually in between various gardening and cookbooks on a shelf atm.

On the flip I bought all of Incognito in one nice HB, it's great, and damn Sean Philips and the Aja, I'm guessing one aped the others drawing style in a more than little way.

Justice League Dark is mediocre but i can't tell if it's the artist's fault or Milligan's fault or if it's just a failing of both.  My guess is that the first volume is just an overall failure.  I understand it gets better, but man it was disappointing.

it's a fuckin' hot mess is what it is. The art is distractingly based on Poser (Mike Deodato does this now too) but it's basically just a pile of shit. I check in on it now and again just in case but it never fails to disappoint.

I'd be waaaay more tempted to try to catch up on Milligan's Hellblazer run, which i keep hearing is good (like the awesome 'Silence!' podcast from the Mindless Ones, for example).

And hey! Why not shout out to a few more comics podcasts -

Wait, What? (from the savagecritics site)
Comic Books are Burning in Hell (the artsy TCJ crowd - Joe McCullough, Tucker Stone, Matt Seneca, Chris Mautner - usually very focused and punchy)
Eleven O'Clock Comics
iFanboy Pick of the Week - just a good round up of mostly cape/Image type books but they all know their indie stuff as well

Any other good ones I missed?

So I read all of Avengers Vs X-men.

Did the Avengers not read anything about the Phoenix after the Dark Phoenix saga?

It's Bendis.

He seems to have a big problem keeping up with continuity outside his own head. That caused some big annoyances in AvX if you read any of the other books. I really like Wolverine & the X-Men as Wolverine at the original Xavier school with students wasn't as annoying a dick Cyclops leading his school on Utopia. In one issue of Wolverine & the X-Men, Wolverine is walking with Hope while he's going over things in his head and remembering how he had to kill Jean to stop Phoenix and debating whether or not to kill Hope for the same reason. By the end of the issue, right before he and Hope get to the moon, he decides that he may be the best at what he does but he's not going to kill a kid. It was a really cool bit of actual character development for Wolverine, and then dumbass Bendis completely ignored it in his next issue of AvX when they're on the moon and Wolvie's like "Gotta kill the bitch!"

Avengers Vs. X-Men dragged on and a lot of it just felt like filler.  The various Avengers and X books associated with it generally had more interesting storylines.

Also Uncanny Avengers is a direct continuation of AvX...I would have waited to read that.

IIRC X-Force is getting restarted as two separate books.  One is the next version of the team in Uncanny (led by Psylocke now) and the other is an "outlaw" team led by a returning Cable.

A recent book that started is "The First X-Men," drawn by crazy ol' Neal Adams.  It's more retcon crap that makes it so that the very first team of mutants was led by Wolverine and Sabertooth, because Wolverine needed to be on yet another team.  Magneto and Xavier are in and are kind of dicks.

There is also going to be another New X-Men book, which brings back the original five X-Men...literally.  Beast goes back in time and brings them into the future.

First X-Men is a limited series. I think five issues. But it probably won't be as insane as Batman Odyssey.

All New X-Men is the new Marvel NOW! X-Men on-going. It's written by Bendis and has the original X-Men team from the 60's transported to present day.

X-Men Legacy, Wolverine & the X-Men, Uncanny X-Force all are being relaunched. Cable and the X-Force is the new book.

Uncanny X-Men is apparently due to come back in late January or February.

Batman: Odyssey raises a lot of questions during it's run, but perhaps the most salient are "What does this line of dialogue mean?", "What's going on in this panel?", and "Which panel is even supposed to come next?" Sadly, those are the questions that are never answered.

i'm only half way through this first volume (let me tell you, Image selling first volumes for $9.99 USD is fucking brilliant.  A full story arc on the cheap is a great intro and it's not like the 3 issue Transmet $10 intro volume) so my opinion could change radically.

basically a woman is attacked and is put into a coma.  in the coma she exists in this shared space where people who are in comas can interact with each other.  this woman finds a way to inhabit and animate the bodies of the dead or the bodies of people who are also in comas but she cannot inhabit her own body (otherwise, you know, story over).  so she is bouncing around while trying to figure out the "rules" of this existence while some one she knows goes around and basically tries to do....something. Lots of set up of various pieces.

It's very "soap opera with light fantasy elements" and I could come to loathe it if it doesn't find its grove by the end of the first arc but so far i'm still reading it so that's got to be a somewhat good sign.

Todd McFarlene.

Looks like it's still being created; it's hard to know from the wikipedia entry, for sure. Spawn #227 is the last search to return cover image hit results. The wiki page says the series peaked in 1997 with the movie's release, and no-one is clamoring for "citation needed," so it MUST BE TRUE.

Shit series. Image comics are largely as disappointing as DreamWorks, in terms of a new entity being created to encourage shaking up the scene, and instead only making more of the same-old, same-old.

Looks like he only half worked on the book and then lost interest after less than two years:
Quote
Created by Todd McFarlane and Robert Kirkman, the series debuted on October 7, 2009.[1] The comic was originally written by Kirkman with pencils by Ryan Ottley, layouts by Greg Capullo, and inks by McFarlane.[2] Joe Casey and Nathan Fox took over as the book's creative team as of Haunt #19.[3]

Yes, as I googled the Spawn issue numbers to see if it had run past 200, as I reached the more recent issues, all of the covers are homages to major comics out there. Desperate attention-grabbing move? Stab at relevancy? McFarlane enacting cargo-cult-like rituals to improve sales?

I actually have a few of those first Mcfralne Spider-Man comics. The art is pretty awful.

As opposed to the Brew and Bake Brubaker. Thanks to the dude who suggested Daredevil Brubaker, it's seriously great, and the art again is just awesome. Basically Brubaker is the USA's Alan Moore (when he was being consistent and non-weird; Promethea is still probably his creative peak) in the sense that he seems now to have the leisure of choice.

So I've been succsefuly getting back into X-men and have actually picked up most of Uncanny X-force. Except for the Captain Britain arc it's been great.

But I wan't to read more then just X-men.

So since I've always liked the art I've been picking up Batwoman, which has been solid. A comic book store near me has all of it since the New 52 thing and I just need to pick up Elegy to get up to date.

But my question is what other New 52 series have been good? Batman Incorporated? Yeah Grant Morrison is good, but I need to pick up RIP and all his other stuff before I start picking that up. So yeah what other New 52 series have been good?

I was working my way through THE NEW 52™ trades, but then I got sidetracked a few months ago and stopped, but now I'm ready to pick it back up. Let's see, so far I've read:

- Batman: Court of Owls (Good)
- Detective Comics: Faces of Death (Good)
- Batwoman: Hydrology (Good)
- Animal Man: The Hunt (Good)
- Wonder Woman (P. Good)
- Green Lantern: Sinsestro (LOL)
- Justice League: Origins (LOL)
- Red Lanterns: Blood and Rage (Boring)
- Stormwatch (Boring)

Read Green Lantern Corps: Fearsome today. It was better than Green Lantern because it didn't have Hal Jordan being all angsty because Sinestro has a power ring and he doesn't (which is a pretty lulzy situation), Corps started off with some pretty doofy scenes of Guy Gardner trying to get a job as a high school football coach and then being like "Well, hmmm I don't know if we want a Green Lantern coaching our kids..." but then it got going pretty quick with some outer spaces battles and planetary annihilation. Ultimately though, there was really only one or two issues worth of story here, padded out to 7 for the trade.

Action Comics Vol. 1: Superman and the Men of Steel was pretty awesome. Morrison did a good job of covering the Superman origin story without it just being the 5000th retelling of the Superman origin story. Obviously DC wants to keep all the key elements intact so there's not a lot of curveballs here (the main one being that Ma and Pa Kent are both dead) but Morrison covered the all the old basics in a few short flashbacks and then got to the point. The first arc had a bit of Occupy Wall Street to it, with Superman/Clark Kent going after this billionaire dude that was screwing over Metropolis and Superman turning into a bit of an angry vigilante. Then Brainiac shows up and that kind of goes out the window, but it was still a solid start.

The big ASM finale started with #698-

turns out that Doctor Octopus has taken over Spider-Man's body and has access to all of his memories.   :o  I just can't see him being the "Superior Spider-Man" character, but maybe Peter gets a new body somehow and takes on a new civilian identity.

I was thinking it would be a Horizon Labs tech-powered normal dude in a suit for a while. Max probably knows his secret by now and has all the gear handy to make a 'superior' version of Spidey. And hey that stuff always sells a few new toys and figurines. This new wrinkle could mean it could maybe even be Peter in a different body or something. Enjoying the ride.

How about a story where the Joker kidnaps some random kid and brainwashes him into being his son?  You know, he's kind of jealous that Batman has a kid now, so he snatches up some pampered rich teen and fucks his brain up good, even going so far as to mutilate him to look like his "Dad." They could even get into some darker territory where you discover he's been trying to knock up Harley for years, and even succeeded a few times, but Harley always took a morning after pill or got an abortion before he found out because even though she's fucked up she's not fucked up enough to let him get his hands on a baby.

Anyway, Joker eventually regrets creating his own son, because it turns out the kid is a "better" Joker than he is - you know, actually funny and clever, brings in more money, doesn't arbitrarily kill the henchmen so they like him better, has charmed Harley into being a mother figure, etc. So of course Joker wants to kill him now. Now Batman's got two Jokers warring with each other and destroying large chunks of Gotham in the process.

As for stories with lasting impact...

You don't see the title of the story until the end, because that's been the kid's plan all along, to show up "Dad," to humiliate him and crush all his criminal enterprises, to get Harley on his side to the point she lets her guard down so he can publicly kill the one thing Joker gives a teeny bit of a shit about right in front of him,  all as payback for having his face/mind wrecked.

"Did You Hear The One About The Matricide?"

Now that's a Batman related role I could buy Joseph Gordon-Levitt in

Amazing Spider-Man #700 "leaked" and was scanned.  Apparently the follow-up comic to it also got scanned early.  Check the comics forum on 4chan...I'm sure a link is still there.

No real surprises here...it follows what started in #698, so that storyline was not a red herring of any kind-

Spider-Man, in Doc Ock's dying body, makes a last-ditch effort to swap bodies and fails- Doc Ock in Spider-Man's body was prepared for the real Spider-Man to try switching bodies again and armored his head.  However Spider-Man's mind switch attempt does beam all of the good and bad events that defined him as a hero into Ock's mind, and he becomes "good."  Spider-Ock, dying, then makes Ock-Spider promise to protect his loved ones and blah blah blah.  It's kind of dull, really.  They also set it up for some characters to be suspicious.  I hope this leads to Ock-Spider turning bad later on and the Marvel Universe has to deal with an evil Spider-Man, leading to the inevitable return of the real Spider-Man, because right now it's less "The Superior Spider-Man" and more "The Slightly Different, Kind Of A Dick, But Trying To Be Good Spider-Man"

I haven't read many of Image's latest round of movie pitches, but Blackacre has a lot of potential I think. Has some Fallout/Judge Dredd/Max Max/Escape from NY type action going on, with some interesting worldbuilding.

because it's not his, it's 'theirs'

Slott is a weird person for the fanboys to go after - he's almost too much of a fanboy to put Spidey through the wringer the way he really should be (i.e. the way the character works best as a story engine). Instead, he is gradually becoming a Mary Sue - learning kung-fu, getting all these cool Batman gadgets so he can meet any threat, getting rich and recognized as a scientific genius, recognized by his peers in the Avengers/FF, still a chick magnet, no longer has to deal with Aunt May etc...I think all that stuff is fun but it's dangerously close to fan-fic. Long-term, the book is probably better in the hands of someone not quite so in love with the character. (and this is not to say that Spidey hasn't gone through some shit under Slott - of course he has, it's a cape comic. Just noting a general trend).

Anyway, let's get real - i haven't read the spoilers above but there is no scenario in which Peter Parker will not be Spider-man for an extended period no matter what happens in 700

i've waited this long, i'll read the actual story.

Having read comics for 35 years, there is literally NOTHING that could possibly happen that could not conceivably be reversed in a couple of panels (or more likely these days, a 12 issue maxiseries with 3 tie-ins). Actually getting mad or upset about it is crazy.

Oh definitely, I agree with that.  There's several ways they could approach what happened and easily "fix" it.  If nothing else, this storyline will last until 2014 when the next Spider-Man movie comes out.

I also think it's just overkill to get rid of Peter Parker as Spider-Man when they've already done this (permanently!)  in Ultimate Spider-Man.

Yeah, this one's too crazy to stick.  Not like undoing the marriage or w/e.

I dunno, I stopped reading Spider-Man after One More Day.  It made the whole thing feel like a pointless waste of time and money to know such massive changes could be wreaked in such a flimsy way.  It just really bothers me that these guys are, for the most part, just going to yell and scream at ol' Dan but not do what they should do if they dislike it so much (stop buying the damn thing).

I stopped reading Spider-Man when they replaced Peter Parker with his clone.  Read a few issues here and there but never really got back into the series again until this past year.  Was not a fan of the Peter/MJ split but at least they kept that going...even when they tried to shake things up by having Peter reveal that he was Spider-Man to the world several years ago, that too got quickly "fixed" by a Dr. Strange spell IIRC. LOL if they do the same to end the Superior storyline.
