Fable was awesome, magical. I never played such a good fantasy action-RPG before.

Was it filled with whimsy?

Easily the most overrated videogame franchise, right up there with Resistance and Dead Rising.

You have the option to extend expressions for more effect in Fable 2, but it's timing based, and you can fail.

Running around seems pretty smooth.  I hope they can remove all the clunkiness that pervades pretty much everything in Fable 2.

Fable II was "rushed"...we know Peter,we know

Quote
Microsoft exclusive RPG Fable II was "terribly messy", "rushed" and suffered from "huge design flaws", creator Peter Molyneux has admitted.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton this afternoon, the Lionhead Studios boss went through a long list of Fable II features that he hated, before telling the audience how Fable 3 will improve upon them.

"Fable II, let's be honest about it, it has some terribly messy things about it," he said.

"Half of that, again being honest, was because we rushed at the end and we had this terrible phase where, the world looks this beautiful with this many game features, and then slowly transitioned into being less beautiful.

"On Fable II we had, at one point, 67,000 bugs. The Microsoft Test team rated us super black. No-one had been black before. They'd been red and orange and green. But we were super black. They said it's utterly impossible for anybody to come out as super black.

"That's why we had to reduce down what we had. But, to be honest with you, there were also huge design flaws in Fable II."

Molyneux said Lionhead failed to concentrate on Fable II's unique selling points. Players used only 60 per cent of the content of the game, research revealed. "It's just a crazy thing to do," Molyneux said.

Molyneux hated Fable II's map: "It was boring and tedious and no-one even knew it was a map." And he hated Fable II's female characters: "In Fable II, all our women looked like Russian shot putters."

In Fable 3, the 2D GUI has been replaced with a 3D space called The Sanctuary. And the game's women "have curves and soft bits".

One criticism of Fable II Lionhead appears to have failed to address is long loading times. "I hate loading. I really hate it. I know the journalists – wonderful people that they are – are going to slag us off about loading. We tried to minimise it.

"But we've got a big problem. Because a lot of our world is persistent, we can't afford the memory. We tried and experimented with trying to stream load it, but we didn't actually get it working."

Peter Molyneux, the main man behind Fable, dropped some good news and some bad news about the next game in that series today: Fable III will not support Microsoft's Kinect controller when the game ships later this year.

But Molyneux says that Kinect support—in some still unknown form—will come to Fable III at after launch, according to a report from Joystiq. Which makes sense, given that Fable III will arrive on the Xbox 360 on October 26, a week before Kinect's arrives on November 4.

That report indicates that whatever motion control camera support was planned for Fable III didn't meet the expectations of developer Lionhead Studios. So, regardless of one crucial half of this combination being unavailable alongside the other, it appears that Kinect support is still TBD.

 :lol

Molyneux is so full of shit its coming out of his ears.

Apparently Kinect stuff was(is) completely optional and non-important to the gameplay...some guy that works for Lionhead posts somewhere and he played like three things...one was not good, other two where good and fun...
Game is fully designed around controllers anyway...Kinect stuff can be chicken kicking :D

I enjoyed Fable 2, but probably because I refused to 1000 it.

That doll-trading thing was a crappy, mean-spirited thing to put in. There's no reason to go online except to get the dolls, everyone only gets one... lame. I enjoyed seeing all the other players as orbs mapped with their gamertag's icon, but overall, wat da hell. Wasn't it mean enough to assign "lackey" or sidekick status to co-op gameplay?

I married as many prostitutes as possible in Fable 2 and kept them in separate areas to keep them happy.

The only non-prostitute I married was some guy who I wanted to have a baby with for an achievement.  Man I was a bitch.

I don't understand why Fable has continued to abandon its roots with each game. The first Fable game was fine, the hype was ridiculous, but if you put that aside when you played the game, it was a solid ARPG. However, like, each game in the series advertises fixing something that didn't need fixing. The game was already linear, but they added a guide to tell you were to go. The combat was never overwhelming, but they added a stupid fucking dog into the game. Now in Fable 3, the menus were perfectly fine before, as well as light RPG elements, but now they're completely gone!

Not a big fable guy but I think they are making the right move similar to Mass Effect. The "RPG" elements of Fable were always some of the the weakest elements to me. Probably better to stop overly pretending it is that and become the somewhat more open Zelda with moral choices it was always destined to be.

The menus were awful in Fable 2.  The problem is that instead of fixing them, Fable 3 is just making a 2D list of poo into a 3D house (of poo) you can walk around in.  They're actually making it take longer to do most of that shit, but they justify it by saving it is more intuitive to walk around in a house and look at modeled stuff.  Even Playstation Home has a 2D menu to quickly access stuff when you don't feel like doing the zombie shuffle over to the door or whatever.  The Fable series is like one step forward, then you slip and crack your skull.

The dog was nice choice, though.  Badass pets in games are awesome like in Torchlight.

This is why I consider it a loss. I didn't play much of Fable 2 because I heard it was more or less inferior to the first in every way, which is sad, because Fable 1 barely manages to be memorable.

:lol thanks for the explanation.

I'd probably have to play the game again to figure out why I liked it more. I remember it made me feel really powerful and the battle system being more rewarding (even though it was still really, really easy) and the environments feeling cooler. Fable was also shorter though and didn't have a lot of the banal, badly implemented Molyneux magic crap he always wanked on about in interviews. I possibly spent too much time on that stuff, making me more bored than if I just focused on the core game.

It seems like every Lionhead game suffers from declining to follow the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" guide. There was basically nothing wrong with Fable 1, outside of it falling horribly short of its hype, but that's Moleneux's fault. Yeah, Fable 1 was stupid easy, especially the more you played, but it was just a neat game. One of the few games I 100%'d out of choice, simply because I didn't want to stop playing.

Fable 1 was probably a better game but doesnt gome close to the greatness of Fallout(not 3) or Baldurs gate or Planescape Torment.  At the time KotOR was probably the best rpg available.  It seems as time passes us we are getting crappier and crappier rpg's and people still love them.

How can you seriously call Fable 1 an RPG, or even compare it to one? Also, what is with this condescension?

Fable 1 is, at best, a solid Zelda clone. Nobody's comparing it to any RPGs. We're comparing Fable 1 to...other Fable games.

Now, KOTOR is great, and I haven't gotten around to playing those other oft-mentioned RPGs in your post, but Fable 1 is far from crap. To be honest I haven't met a single person who actually beat it who didn't think it was good fun.

Not every game has to be a genre-defining, ground-breaking, million-seller, jerkface.
