the best part is when you play a different game after a few days of nothing but FFXIII and it's like "holy fuck, this game wants me to play it"

Yes.

How would you rate it on a ten point scale?

6

Fuck it. I admit defeat. It's going back to Gamefly.

I just can't really motivate myself to finish it even though I'm relatively close. I spent the evening playing Battlefield MP and enjoying myself and then I thought, why am I going back to play something I don't really enjoy spending my time with. It's supposed to be a fun hobby. Not a chore.

FF13 you defeated me.  :punch

Hmmm, sounds like FF13 is complete shit.  Guess Himuro's japafag DNA made him immune to the worst parts of the game.

I'm not immune. I'm just as vocal about the worst parts of the game, but unlike Stoney, I have a dedication to the series so I have to see it to the end. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's certainly lacking in many areas. The one area it's good at (combat) shows promise, but you have to wade through at least 25 hours to get to that section of the game it seems and I'm almost there.

The game feels incomplete, even more so than 12.

He's easy.

Use rav/rav/com on the heads, heal when necessary, take out the heads first. Preferably the far right ones (?) because they have powerful magic than the left ones iirc. Then take out the main boss. When he starts to go into a stance, keep attacking him and it'll lessen his attacks strength. Heal when necessary.

If you're really having trouble, make a med/med/sab paradigm.

Chapter 9 I would almost exclusively use:

Lightning RAV
Hope      MED
Fang       COM

I could use this Paradigm all fights, during the whole fight.  I could just keep pressing X (on PS3) and not even watch the screen.  That's what I did for the Chapter 9 boss fight.  I'd read and chat and occasionally looked up to make sure everyone was still alive (they always were).

Sab is a very important defense paradigm, as is sentinal, but sab especially as it debuffs and makes those hits go from 100 hp hits to 1000, 2000, 3000 hp hits.

A general rule of thumb with Fang, Light, Hope party is to make Com/Sab/Sen party default. This debuffs from the get go, as well as gives the party some tasty buffs. Then I switch to rav/rav/com, and it's mindless battle city. zzz.

Annnnnddd...whoops. In that post I meant med/med/sen. As it takes attention away from two other party members, as they concentrate on healing. It's worked well thus far.

And yeah, I think that battle was stupid. Typically in FF or hell, in most - if not all rpgs - when a boss goes into a stance that means it's time to go on the defensive: healing up, castling shell, protect, whatever, because you KNOW that attack's going to be powerful. Making the tactic the complete opposite was cheap, time consuming, confusing, and just all about stupid.

Finally got to Chapter 4, 5 hours in, still pressing A+A+A+A+A+A to win battles, still just pressing the Forward button to advance from one area to the next. So far the storyline makes Avatar look like 400 Blows, and all my characters are super-moody and uguu~ except for the OMEGA-MOE Australian chick. :bow GOTY :bow2

So is the general consensus that this game is at least worth playing? I've never beaten a Final Fantasy and I feel if I start playing 13 it'll probably be the first I beat. I'm assuming that would be a bad thing.

Hey, let's witness the government committing an act of genocide and be bubbly and happy and tee-heeing afterwards. Totally realistic! There's a difference between someone who's optimistic (Snow) and yet has actually realistic human feelings, but Vanille is either an insane psychopath or someone who desperately needs to be checked into the local Cocoon Retarda'cie Center.

it's the one where you're controlling two characters, fighting wave after wave of easy enemies, and then there's a couple of tougher enemies that require a certain combination of paradigm shifts that you figure out after the first time fighting those particular enemies, effectively just making those fights longer, but not necessarily more difficult (aside from playing the FFXIII metagame of "trying hard as hell not to fall asleep"), and also throughout that chapter, you run down a long corridor and watch lots of bad cut scenes, culminating in a semi-difficult boss fight.

If you've never beaten a final fantasy, this isn't the one that I would recommend be your first. It all depends. Why do you want to play this. Is there something especially interesting that has appealed to you from what you've seen of this game. Or are you just looking for something to play. Because there are better options out there. Including probably playing one of the older ones.

The graphics are pretty tight, and I've been meaning to get back into RPGs, I just don't have the means to play anything that isn't a next-gen RPG. I hate emulation since I can never focus on finishing that one game, and I have nothing to connect my PS2 to, so I'm confined to X360 RPGs. If I ever get FF13, it probably won't be until it is very cheap. Or I'll just rent it.

Either of those two options would be preferable imo. I'm not saying its a bad game but its way too divisive a game to easily plunk down $60 dollars on.

Finished 50% of the hunts and got my double CP item from the Neochu today. Yes, I used the cheap method to kill him; I just wanted my double CP item to speed up all the grindan. I'll come back and fight him properly once I'm an appropriate level...

The hunts would be so much more fun if they didn't pad them out so much. You spend at least twice as much time running to your target than in actual combat :-\. They are getting more interesting at least, with new areas and boss enemies. Should probably grind out some money too for more upgrades and ultimate weapons, but I've 5 starred most missions so far so I don't think I need to just yet.

Also did three hunts. Piss easy.

All the weapon stats are here if you want to check them out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48263855@N04/

I went with:

Lightning: Lionheart (quick stagger, lowest atk + magic)
Fang: Training Pole (stagger lock, highest atk + magic)
Hope: Hawkeye (highest magic)
Vanille: Belladonna wand (improved debuffing and 2nd highest magic)

I don't use Sazh and Snow so I haven't upgraded them yet.

Just dump a bunch of low exp organic components into a weapon to get a 3x multiplier, then use some high exp mechanical parts to level it quickly. A level one weapon takes 50,000 exp to hit max rank, then you need a catalyst to transform it to level two, then it takes about 450,000 exp to max that one out. The catalyst for the level 3 weapons drops off the giant turtles I think or it costs two million gil from a vendor :-\

You can buy an Ultracompact Reactor from a vendor for 50,000 gil, and those have a base exp value of 40,000. So if you buy a few of them you can max out a level two weapon with a 3x multiplier instantly.

Thanks for the link and tips. Should come in handy.
I only use Lightning, Hope and Fang. I miss Sazh's Haste spell, though. But I don't want him in my team.

Hope is a great medic/ravager/synergist and Fang does some heavy attacks and I use her as a saboteur. I keep Lighning as a ravager and medic. Staggering is much easier as as ravager.

The weapon upgrade system sounds awful.

Finally in Pulse. Mission Accomplished. Unlocked my first mission and I'm excited to finally do something to break the tedium, although the missions look like the could be tedious themselves considering the size and scope of this area. Final Fantasy needs a "Zoom" spell.

btw

"C'ie food"

This game! :lol :lol :lol

I'm at the point now where I want to skip all cutscenes.

The game will provide easier ways to transverse Gran Pulse if you continue doing the missions.

Yeah, do all the teleporters and mission 14

Make sure you do all the red gate "general" ones.  They are like real boss fights and a couple are great.

don't grind.  You don't have to grind in XIII.

Just do the missions in order of C rank, B rank, A rank, etc...you'll gradually power up and always be ready for the next one.

Just beat the game so you unlock the Level 5 Crystarium, then do the grinding exploits floating around the net. Cakewalk. Easiest 1000 yet.

They removed the best grinding spot in the US version (getting a preemptive attack on an Ochu). Now we are only left with the beast king and giant wolf fighting outside the mines, which is best for CP, but you don't get any money or items from them. I haven't bothered with that yet, I am just killing the turtles trying to get trapezowhatevers for the ultimate weapons. I've killed more turtles than I can count and I still do not have a single one. At least I am getting a decent amount of platinum ingots.

I'm still on Chapter 7 or so. Got sidetracked by marathoning Deadly Premonition (amazing game)
